     John Sutherland Birnie was born, 25 May 1879, in 4 Crown Street, Inverness, Inverness Parish, Inverness, Scotland.1,2

John Sutherland Birnie was in the household of John Birnie and his wife, Isabella Birnie, and listed as nephew on the 1881 Scotland Census, in Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was listed as John Birnie, 1 year old and born in Inverness Parish. His mother, Jeannie Birnie was also present.3

John Sutherland Birnie was apparently adopted, after 17 September 1881. He was consistantly found on official documents with a surname of Cheyne..4

John S. B. Cheyne, William J. Cheyne, Robert M. Cheyne and Jessie Birnie Cheyne were listed as children in the household of John Cheyne and his wife, Jeannie Cheyne on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 54 Esslemont Avenue, in Aberdeen, Old Machar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 11, born in Inverness, and a scholar.1

The attached is a edited studio photograph of both the adopted and natural children of John Cheyne, circa 1900. Apparently John and his wife Jeanie were cut out. From the left, seated, John Sutherland Birnie, James Tulloch, William James (in uniform), Jessie Birnie and Robert McKenzie Cheynes.5

John Sutherland Birnie Cheyne married Isabella Forbes Linklater 17 July 1903, at 31 Erskine Street, in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.6

He was listed in the Aberdeen City Directory; "Cheyne, John S. Birnie, commercial traveller, 82 Hamilton Place".7

John and Isabella became estranged and later separated. He when to Canada and she to Australia.8

John Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 27 June 1927, at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. He was a passenger aboard the Letitia, out of Glasgow on the 17th of June. He was 48, married, a commercial traveller and born in Inverness. He had not previously been in Canada. He was joining a friend, Mr. Patrick Reid, in Toronto. His wife, Mrs. Isabella Cheyne, 10 Whitehall Place, Aberdeen was his next of kin in Scotland. He was marked "Landed Immigrant".9

John S. B. Cheyne, residing in Aberdeen were named as the parents of James Linklater Birnie Cheyne, who died in action, on 25 September 1940 and was buried at Asmara War Cemetery, in Eritrea; during World War II.10

John Sutherland Birnie Cheyne died 31 October 1952 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.11
