     James Cheyne was born, 22 December 1860, in Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. His birth was originally registered as James Milne, mother Ann Milne and the father not identified. His paternity was established 30 November 1864 by a Decree of Court Relative to the Paternity of an Illegitimate Child as James Cheyne. His father was James Cheyne.1,2,3,4,5

James Cheyne was listed as a grandson in the household of James Milne and his wife, Ann Milne, on the 1861 Scotland Census at Faichford, in Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. His age was listed as three months old and born in Longside Parish..1

Ann Milne and James Cheyne was found in the household of Ann Milne and listed as their son on the 1871 Scotland Census, in Longside, Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 10 years of age, born in Longside Parish and a scholar. His probable mother, Ann Milne and James Cheyne, was also present. (N.B.--He was indexed James Chezne).6

James Cheyne was listed on the 1881 Scotland Census in Cruden Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was employed as a miller on the farm of George Davidson. He was unmarried, age 20, and said to have been born in Longside Parish, Aberdeen.7

James Cheyne married Mary Strachan 30 July 1886, at Fetterangus, in Old Deer Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. James was 25, a journeyman miller and a bachelor. He resided at Tillnamott, Tyrie. His parents were James Cheyne, general labourer and Anne Milne, domestic servant, not married.2,8,3

Both James' and Mary's mothers were Milnes. They probably were cousins both being from Longside Parish. James was brought up by the Milnes and they probably met at family functions.

James Cheyne and Mary Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 23 June 1887, at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. They were aboard the Buenos Ayrean, out of Glasgow. He was 26 years old, married, a miller, of Scotch race and destined for Detroit. Mary was listed as Mrs. Cheyne, 24.9

James Cheyne and Mary Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 14 August 1894, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Also present were their children George Cheyne, James Cheyne and Alexander Cheyne. They were passengers aboard the Mongolian out of New York. He was 31 and a printer and she was 30. Their children George, 7, James, 4 and Alexander, 1. All were marked as Scotch.10

James Cheyne and his wife Mary Strachan were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at 35 Clarence Street, in Aberdeen, Saint Clements Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a grain warehouseman. Also present were his children, George Cheyne, James Cheyne, Alexander Strachan Cheyne, Mary Strachan Cheyne and Elizabeth G. Strachan Cheyne. The last three children were indexed with a Strachan surname.. He was indexed as John, not James and 40 years of age and born in Longside Parish, Aberdeenshire.2
