     Mary Strachan was born, 25 October 1862, in Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1,2,3,4

William Strachan, Alexander Strachan, Charles Strachan and Mary Strachan were listed as children in the household of George Strachan and his wife, Mary Strachan on the 1871 Scotland Census, at Crookednook Cottage, in Longside Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was 8 years of age, born in Londside Parish and a scholar.4

Mary Strachan married James Cheyne 30 July 1886, at Fetterangus, in Old Deer Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Mary was 23, a domestic servant and a spinster. She resided at Fetterangus. Her parents were confirmed to be as recorded herein.1,5,6

Both James' and Mary's mothers were Milnes. They probably were cousins both being from Longside Parish. James was brought up by the Milnes and they probably met at family functions.

Mary Cheyne and James Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 23 June 1887, at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. They were aboard the Buenos Ayrean, out of Glasgow. He was 26 years old, married, a miller, of Scotch race and destined for Detroit. Mary was listed as Mrs. Cheyne, 24.7

Mary Cheyne and James Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 14 August 1894, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Also present were their children George Cheyne, James Cheyne and Alexander Cheyne. They were passengers aboard the Mongolian out of New York. He was 31 and a printer and she was 30. Their children George, 7, James, 4 and Alexander, 1. All were marked as Scotch.2

Mary Strachan and her husband, James Cheyne, were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at 35 Clarence Street, in Aberdeen, Saint Clements Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, George Cheyne, James Cheyne, Alexander Strachan Cheyne, Mary Strachan Cheyne and Elizabeth G. Strachan Cheyne. The last three children were indexed with a Strachan surname.. Mary was listed with her maiden surname, 28, (probably was 38) years of age and born in Longside Parish, Aberdeenshire.1

Mary Cheyne died 24 March 1918 in New Machar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Conflicting evidence exists pertaining to the date of death of Mary. Her death record at ScotlandsPeople has 24 March 1819 and her gravestone reads 27 March.8

Mary Cheyne was listed on the death record as the mother of the deceased George W. Cheyne who died 8 June 1918; during World War I.9,10
