GATE CITY -- Edward Isaac Falin, 60, died at his home in Caney Valley Friday [7/7/1969] morning.

Survivors include four brothers, Kelly, Clint, and Clyde Falin, all of Gate City, and Carl Falin of Johnson City.

Funeral services will be at Plum Grove Baptist Church in Caney Valley at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Kyle Calhoun officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be removed to the church one hour before the funeral from Colboch-Price Funeral Home.

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Emmer "Memmy" Falin , 94, Route 2, entered into rest Sunday (Dec. 26, 1999) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born March 3, 1905 in Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Martha Falin .

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ransom Falin ; daughter, Geneva Davis; sons, William Leslie Falin and Laranza Falin ; daughter-in-law, Lula Belle Falin ; sisters, Ruby Falin and Ethel Horton; brothers, Burl Falin , James Falin and Hezekiah Falin ; and three grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughter, Evelyn Falin , Clinchport, Va.; daughter-in-law, Ann Falin Lane, Duffield, Va.; son, Hansford ``Dassie'' Falin , Clinchport, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ella Falin , Gate City, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Balaam and Clora Falin , Clinchport, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Scott County, VA on August 19, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude Dallas Kimbler.

In addition to her mother, her daughter, Carolyn Ann Falin; son, Lonnie Kenneth Falin; sister, Shirley Jean Gillenwater; and brother, Donald (Don) Billy Gillenwater preceded her in death.

Surviving is her husband of 60 years, Roy K. Randy was born in Sullivan County on March 27, 1967 and was the son of Evelyn Falin and the late, Elmer Ray Falin.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Emmer Falin and paternal grandmother, Alpha Falin.

WEBER CITY, Va. - Glen Ray Falin, 55, Pine Street, Weber City, Va. died at his residence early Saturday morning (Sept. 26, 1987).

A native of Scott County, he a disabled veteran of the Korean War and a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Margaret Smith Falin.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Angela Falin Salyer, Kingsport, Mrs. Terresa Shupe, Duffield, Va. and Mrs. Kathy Ann Owens, Gate City, Va.; one son, Arthur Falin, Gate City, Va.; three grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Ruby Bright, Mrs. Georgie Lowe, Mrs. Virginia Felker, all of Weber City, Va. and Mrs. June Frazier, Gate City, Va.; two brothers, Ralph Falin and Claude Falin, both of Gate City, Va.

HILTONS, Va. - Mrs. Judy Jane Falin, 62, died at 6 a.m. Saturday [2/4/1956] at the home of her sister, Mrs. Ella Hilton, after a brief illness.

A daughter of the late Robert Emmett and Alice Reynolds Bell, she was a lifelong resident of Scott

County and a member of the Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Mack Falin; three sons, Robert L. Falin of Maryville, Tenn., Claude C. Falin of Gate City and Clyde E. Falin of Kingsport; one brother, Robert D. Bell of East Stone Gap; one sister, Mrs. Hilton; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Church at Pattonville with the Rev. Lester Smith, and the Rev. N. P. King officiating. Burial is to be in the Bell Cemetery.

Gate City, VA - Nellie Ann (Lane) Falin, 67, Gate City, VA passed away, Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, VA after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer since 2002, which she bravely fought with chemo and radiation.

In 2007, Ann began another battle with Brain Cancer, but her strong will to live, her unwavering faith in God, the love and prayers of her family, friends, and church members carried her through three brain surgeries and more radiation.

Her last battle with cancer resumed in November of 2013 with Stage IV Brain Cancer, which she once again fought bravely for the last four months of her life. Throughout all of this she remained faithful to her Heavenly Father.

Ann was born in Scott County, VA on July 19, 1946 to the late Truman and Lillian Bloomer Lane. She was retired from Cumberland Glove.

In addition to her parents, the father of her children, Hansford Falin; her sister and brother-in-law, Rosa and Lloyd Nevals; and brothers and sister-in-law, Robert Lane and W.H. and Aileen Lane preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Vickie Cleek, Gate City, VA, Lisa Hutchins and husband, John, Mount Carmel, TN, and Susan Falin, Church Hill, TN; son, Jeffery Falin and wife, Lorie, Duffield, VA; grandchildren, Joe, Sarah, Lakeisha, Jonathan, Richie, Wendell, and Tiffany; six great grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Petering (her special big sister) and husband, Bob, OH, Linda Acting and husband, Mike, OH, and Rhonda Bertsch and husband, Jody, OH; brothers, Herman Lane, Duffield, VA, Jack Lane, Duffield, VA, and Clyde Lane, Duffield, VA; her special lifelong friend, Sandy Combs Falin Smith (always love); along with several nieces and nephews.

WEBER CITY, Va. — Noah Benjamin Falin, 27, of Weber City, Va., went home to be with his Heavenly Father unexpectedly on Monday night (Feb. 2, 2009) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Weber City, Va. Noah accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He had a free spirit never meeting a stranger and was a loyal friend to all who knew him. Noah had a genuine love for music and played a variety of instruments with the percussion being his favorite. He also enjoyed spending time on the computer and especially being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Ruth Day Price; his uncle, Darwin "Shawn" Price.

Noah Falin is survived by his mother, Norma Price Sampson and her husband, Gary (Kingsport); his father, Billy Joe Falin (Kingsport); a brother, Josh Lane and his wife, Johna (Weber City); his nieces, Tess Lane and Jayden Lane; a step-grandmother, Virginia Casteel; a stepbrother; and two stepsisters; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was a medic in World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a 50-year member of the Masons and a 50-year member of the American Legion.

GATE CITY, Va. - Roy Fayne Falin, 77, Kermit community, went to be with the Lord on Friday (Feb. 18, 2005) at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. (Kermit community), and was a member of Cowans Branch Baptist Church.

Mr. Falin retired from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1986 with 36 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Charles Falin and Neola Bellamy Falin.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Cowan's Branch Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Mrs. Falin was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Roy Fayne Falin on Feb. 18, 2005; and her parents, William Charles Grimm and Margie Monroe Grimm.

ERWIN - Wilburn "Bill" Falin Jr., 79, entered into rest Thursday (March 3, 2005) at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif.

He was born in Sullivan County, Oct. 29, 1925, to the late Wilburn Falin Sr. and Amanda Hill Falin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Ruby Carolyn Falin and Janice Cirner, 2004; sisters, Lillian Stewart, Margaret Benton and Ella Mae Lowe; brothers, Oscar, Clyde, Clarence, Gene, Roy and James Edward Falin.

Mr. Falin was a member of the USS Augusta CA-31 Association and was a master of the Royal Secret of the 32 degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Cupertino, Calif., effective March 20, 1982, and also a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #939, Erwin, Tenn.

From Feb. 1944 to Feb. 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the flagship USS Augusta, carrying General Omar Bradley, leading the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and was also active in the invasion of South Africa.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States issued a lifetime membership for Post #9241, Georgetown, Calif., Post #113, San Leandro Lodge, Post #346, Palo Alto Roller Lodge, F&AM of California.

He was employed by the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Palo Alto, Calif., from March 1946 until his retirement in Jan. 1984. During that time he was also a charter bus driver for Peninsula Charter Lines of Palo Alto, Calif., until 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Zella Giles Falin; two daughters, Phyllis Loraine Falin, and Lynn Sue Liden; one brother, Charles Thomas Falin, all of Erwin; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence in Erwin. Masonic services will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Falin Family Cemetery in the Sloantown community of Scott County, Va. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.

KINGSPORT — Harold Coolidge Fannon, born in Lee County of Stickleyville, Va. on April 19, 1925 to Charlie Franklin and Maggie Ross (Anderson) Fannon passed away on Feb. 7, 2008.

He was the 5th son, and the 12th child born to this union.His parents; seven sisters; and four brothers preceded him in death.He married Rosalie (Toby) Vaughn on Dec. 30, 1949 and had three children, Duwayne Charles Fannon and his wife, Johnnie who live in Wasilla, Ark., LaJuan and husband, Jim Casella, who lives in East Spokane, Wash., and their youngest daughter, Ramona Cole who lives in Kingsport. Harold had four grandsons; one granddaughter; five great grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. He also has 33 nieces and nephews from his brothers and sisters who all mourn his passing.

Harold attended elementary school in Stickleyville, Va., and high school in Pennington Gap, Va. His country, just as his loyalty toward his employers was never in question. Harold was patriotic, and his favorite phrase was, "You can never appreciate this counrty until you go to another country and compare it." He joined the Marines in 1943 and served until August 1946. He often said, the Marines made a man out of me! He was very proud of the time he served his country in Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Guam, and Guadalcanal. He was a member of the Americian Legion Post # 126 for over 40 years.

After this tour of duty he came home to help his father on the family farm for the next 4 years. Then he married Rosalie Vaughn and together they moved to Idaho in 1950 to manage a Honey Production and Fruit and Seed Pollination operation for his cousin, Grove A. Koger. He later worked for Irving Robinson Honey Company in the same field of work. Harold managed a 5400 acre seed farm located in Melba, Idaho for Robert L. Rice called Basin Land Company from 1963 to 1974. Every company held Harold’s knowledge in high regard. Being a farm enthusiast he learned and managed the irrigation and crop production from seed through harvest with long hours of work. He will long be remembered by the employers, and employees as a man of his word. When this farm was sold Harold continued with the new owners until he was offered a position to become an alfalfa seed specialist with North America Plant Breeders. He attended classes calling on farmers, giving out contracts, and checking alfalfa fields for progress, insect control, and irrigation from 1974 through May of 1990 when he retired.

Harold loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper. Harold was a lifetime member NRA. His endeavors took him all over Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Virginia. Harold said many times that his most memorable hunting trip was when he and his son went Big Horn Sheep hunting in Alaska after he retired. Later in his life Harold became a Christian and was baptized on Sept. 29, 2003. He then decided he had too much "catching up" to do with the small acreage home place in Melba, Idaho near the Snake River. He had an orchard of apples, peaches, grapes, raspberries, and apricots, as well as many perennial flowers, which he tended with utmost care. On April 2005, Harold and Rosalie sold their property in Idaho and moved east to Kingsport, Tenn. in order to return to their roots and be closer to the family.

Our deepest thanks and gratitude to each of you who have given of themselves, their love and compassion in the care of our father, to make his last days here easier and more comfortable. And, also, for being there for us, with your boundless love and support every minute of every day, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Garry Hood officiating.

Special music will be by Rachel, Amanda, and Rebecca Morgan.

Military graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Fannon cemetery on Wallens Creek by the Charles DeWitt Byrd, VFW Post # 3382 Color Guard of Kingsport.

Pallbeares will be nephews, Cecil, Jimmy, Otis, and Morgan. Neighbors, M.D. Gillenwater and George Livingston.

YUMA, Va. — Echol V. Fansler, 88, of Yuma, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning ( July 15, 2009 ) at Vanderbilt Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Surgoinsville, but had lived the majority of his life in Scott County , Va. Echol retired from the Eastman Kodak with over 23 years of service. Mr. Fansler loved to work on lawnmowers in his garage.

He was a member of Shelby Creek Primitive Baptist Church .

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Winegar Fansler; a brother along with an infant sister.

Echol Fansler is survived by his sons, James D. Fansler (Gate City, Va.), Ronald Fansler and his wife, Kim (Tennessee Ridge, Tenn.); his grandchildren, Nicky Griffin and her husband, Gerald, Tony Fansler and his girlfriend, Dee Dee, Randy Fansler and his wife, Amanda, Adam Fansler and his wife, Amanda, Allen Williams and Anthony Williams; his great-grandchildren, Chandra Griffin and Alex Fansler; his special nieces, Louella Williams and Viola Adams; along with several additional nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Saturday at Scott County Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. or anytime at his residence.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Eckel Head and Elder Harold Head officiating. Music will be provided by Rejoicing Hearts and Quinton Thacker.

A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Powers Cemetery ( Robinette Valley ) with Adam Fansler, Randy Fansler, Tony Fansler, Gerald Griffin, Anthony Williams and Chris Selph serving as pallbearers.

GATE CITY, Va. - Gladys Winegar Fansler, 75, Yuma community, surrounded by her loving family left this life for her Heavenly Home Thursday ( July 27, 2000 ) at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Gladys was born in Scott County, Va. on Oct. 13, 1924 to the late Albert and Pearlie (Powers) Winegar. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Marcia Head, Ruby Head and Bessie Allen; and three brothers, Vernon Winegar, Richard Winegar and Lester Winegar.

KINGSPORT — Heather Christine King Fansler, 29, of Kingsport, passed away July 3, 2009, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center .

Heather graduated from Sullivan South High School in 1997. She received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from ETSU in 2002 with a minor in Special Education. She was a volunteer and co-leader with Girl Scout Troop 169. Heather was talented in piano, guitar and voice. Heather was greatly loved by her family and will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Baby Fansler; maternal grandparents, Robert and Mattie Christian Davidson; and paternal grandparents, Collie R. King and Stella Southerland King.

Heather is survived by her husband, Scotty Lynn Fansler of the home; daughter, Emily Faith Fansler of the home; parents, Wayne and Barbara Davidson King of Kingsport; sister, Robin Repass and husband, Bernd Neudecker of Littleton, Colo.; brother, Bobby Repass of Kingsport; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ricky and Rita Qualls Fansler; grandparents-in-law Odas Qualls, Orville and Pauline Fansler.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. — Mozell Skeen Farmer, 83, of Nickelsville Va., who had lived in Dandridge and Clearwater, Fla., died Thursday (June 4, 2009) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Farmer attended Nickelsville United Methodist Church and Culbertson Chapel.

She was born in Scott County Va. Aug. 25, 1925 to the late Elbert (Ebb) and Wanda Smith Skeen. While living in Florida, she worked in the medical field and enjoyed her flower garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, H. P. and Mildred Skeen of Nickelsville.

Mozell Farmer is survived by two nephews and wives, Eddie and Robin Skeen (Nickelsville, Va.) and Dennis and Sandra Skeen (Castlewood, Va.); her two nieces and husbands, Jo Ann and Darrell Elam and Gay and Doyle Smith (both of Nickelsville, Va.); great-nephews, Michael Skeen, Todd Elam and his daughter, Lauren; great-nieces and husbands, Amber and Rhea McConnell and Sabrina and William Monk.

Born in Lee County, VA on August 11, 1925 she was a daughter of the late Worley Rhoton and Elizabeth Coomer. She was also preceded in death two daughters, Edna Fredrickson and Phyllis Lane; a son Gene Lane; four brothers and three sisters,

Nancy attended Log Cabin Church where she was a member. Her favorite hobby was dancing.

She is survived by her husband, James R.B. Ferguson of the home; three daughters Connie Riner (Junior) of Kingsport, Margaret Jackson (fiancée Kenneth Reynolds) of Blountville, and Christine Davenport (fiancée James Farmer) Kingsport; two sons James Ferguson (Angie) Kingsport, and Jackie Ferguson (Susan) Jonesboro; several grand and great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two special great-great grandsons, Ezekiel Tarleton, and Caden Ottinger.

O. W. Ferguson, 83, went to be with his Lord on Monday January 12, 2015 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born July 26, 1931 in Sullivan County, TN. O.W. graduated from Sullivan High School in 1950 where he was active in sports having played on the school’s first football team for three years. He also was on the baseball team where he was the starting pitcher earning a tryout from the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in the Korean War. He also served in the reserves with the United States Air Force. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company where he worked in the accounting department. He loved to work in his garden and also doing lawn work, and especially was an avid UT fan.

Mr. Ferguson was a member of the Lynn Garden Optimist Club since 1965. At the Club Level he proudly served as Distinguished President, Vice President, Youth Appreciation Chair, Bike Safety, Fund Raising Chair, Christmas Tree Chair, Pancake Breakfast Chair, along with having served as Secretary/Treasurer since 1980. District offices he had held were International Development, Distinguished Lt. Governor (4 years), Bike Chair, Candidate Qualifications, Credentials and Zone Realignment, Optimist Supplies, International Ambassador. The International Offices he had held were New Club Building, he built three clubs he was so proud of: Indian Springs (twice) and Sullivan Gardens, others were in Big Stone Gap and Weber City, VA. He was awarded the Sunshine Welch three different occasions. He currently sponsored well over 200 members. He was named Optimist of the Year for eight years. He received the Optimist President Citation Award multiple times. O.W. Ferguson was elected to The Tennessee District of Optimist International Hall of Fame in 2004. His highlighted accomplishments were serving as a Sullivan County Magistrate, Sullivan Court Commission, and Sullivan County Commissioner for a total of 39 years, twenty-two of those years were as chairman of Pro Tem. He was very active with youth baseball in all divisions which were Babe Ruth, Pee Wee and Midget. He coached grade school football at Bell Ridge Grade School.

He was a very active member of State Line Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 46 years and held the title of longest serving Chairman of the Deacon Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter J and Jessie Fink Ferguson; brother, Thomas Eugene Ferguson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Wolfe Ferguson; daughters, Linda K. Smith and Rhonda S. Martin and husband Tracy; two granddaughters, Jessica Smith Scantlin and Ashley Templeton Payne and husband Jeff; one grandson, Tyler Templeton; “special granddaughter”, Vestal Holder; sister-in- law, Arlene Ferguson; special friend and neighbor, Earl Matlock; and someone who was like a brother, Claude Smith.

The family will receive friends from 4 pm to 7 pm Thursday, January 15, 2015 at State Line Baptist Church, (West Carters Valley Road) or anytime at the residence.

GADSDEN, Ala. - Elbert Finley, 75, 2202 Cansler Ave., Gadsden, Ala., died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 26, 1987) at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Gadsden, after a brief illness.

He was a former resident of Kingsport and a former employee of Kingsport Foundry.

Surviving are two sons, Howard Finley, Gadsden, Ala. and Ralph Finley, St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Archie Finley, Florida and Wright Finley, Pennsylvania.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery with Pastor Ed Nelms officiating.

KINGSPORT — Lloyd Melban Fish, 86, of 154 Pond Springs Road, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord at 8 a.m. Tuesday (July 15, 2008) at his residence after eight years of declining health and Alzheimers.

Mr. Fish was born in Sullivan County and was a resident of Kingsport all of his life. He retired from AFG in 1984 and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. Mr. Fish was of the Baptist faith and was saved on April 24, 1994.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Lane Fish on Feb. 18, 2000; his parents, Simon and Georgia Fish; and two brothers, Sidney Fish and Merwyn Fish.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Jim Smith, of Kingsport; son and daughter-in-law, David Myron and Connie Fish of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Mark Fish and wife, Alesia of Church Hill. Randy Fish and wife, Tonya and Wesley Smith, all of Kingsport; two great-grandchildren, Tanner Alley and Tucker Alley; two honorary great-grandchildren, Levi Herron and Caleb Herron; brother, Aubry Fish of Kingsport; sisters, Valda Francis and husband, Bob (deceased) and Lyndall and Samuel Hite of Kingsport; one sister-in-law, Eileen Fish of Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews.

The family of Lloyd Fish wishes to thank Caris Hospice of Johnson City and all of their staff for all of their kind services, care, and support. The family would also like to send a special thank you to his caregivers, Patsy Bates (sister-in-law) and Waneta Dockter. You have touched our hearts with all of the special care you gave to our dad. Special thanks also to Dr. Dale Solomon and his staff and Wellmont Wound Clinic for all of the care and suppport during dad's illness.

Mildred Juanita Lane Fish , 78, 154 Pond Springs Road, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) of an apparent heart attack in Indian Path Medical Center emergency room.

Mrs. Fish was born in Scott County, Va., and was a resident of Kingsport most of her life. She attended Victory Baptist Church in Gate City, Va. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

BLACKWATER, Va. - Elmer Ray Fisher, 76, went to be with the Lord on Thursday ( Jan. 25, 2007 ) at his residence.

Born in Scott County , Va. , he was the son of the late Dan and Easter Vanzant Fisher. He was a born again Christian.

In addition to this parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ronnie Fisher; and one sister, Reba Willis.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 54 years, Mary Fisher; one sister, Rosa Gilreath of Blackwater , Va ; three nieces; three nephews; three great-nieces and five great-nephews; three great-great-nieces; nine great-great-nephews; and special nephew, Mike Copas.

JOHNSON CITY - Hattie Frances Fisher , 61, Huffine Circle, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Oct. 3, 1999) at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, Va. on June 5, 1938, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Virgie Fields Rhoton. She was a graduate of Rye Cove High School and Johnston Memorial School of Nursing. She was formerly employed as a registered nurse with Holston Valley Hospital, Kings Daughter Children's Hospital in Norfolk, Va., Seminole County Memorial Hospital, Sanford, Fla., and Clairmont General Hospital, San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Fisher was of the Baptist faith and attended the Brick Church.

Surviving are her husband, John T. N. Fisher Jr., Johnson City; aunts, Alice Fields, Glessie Thompson, Hester Fields and Jean Robinette, all of Norton, Va., Virginia Darnell, Kingsport and Thelma Fleenor, Gate City, Va.; uncles, Frank Fields, Big Stone Gap, Va., Isaac Fields, Wise, Va., Harry Fields, Kingsport, Jack Fields, Norton, Va., Alvin Fields, Revenna, Ohio, Robert Rhoton, Clinchport, Va., and Ed Rhoton, Surgoinsville; and several cousins.

GATE CITY - John A. Fisher , 66, died suddenly Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at his residence.

Born in Hancock County, he was a retired truck driver from A.J. Metler. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, Quillen and Mary Fletcher Fisher ; brother, Glen Fisher .

Surviving are his wife, Rowena Vermillion Fisher ; four daughters, Barbara Stromberg, Eagle, Idaho, Anna Edwards and Janet Sapp, both of Gate City, Mary Sapp, Kingsport; sons, Wayne Fisher , Lexington, Ky., James Sapp and Wade Fisher , both of Gate City; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Evelyn Baker, Gate City and Nell Hammonds, Dayton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

In honor of Mr. Fisher 's request he will be cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

RICHMOND, Va. — John Ray Fischer, 66, went to be with the Lord Monday (Feb. 23, 2009) at his home.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965 and loved the fast life whether in a car or on the dance floor. He had a rough exterior but had a great big heart.

John resided in Gate City, Va., from 1974 to 1981, where he worked in the furniture industry and at Gate City Funeral Home. He was an avid quarter horse rider and enjoyed going to horse shows. John loved fishing, playing cards, watching college and pro football, NASCAR Racing (especially Little E) and traveling through Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Fischer; maternal grandparents, Rodney and Bessie Rainier; paternal grandparents, August and Lillian Fischer; brother-in-law, Nukey West.

Gate City, VA - Mrs. Anna Lee (Babb) Flanary, 83, Gate City, VA went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Anna Lee was born, March 21, 1930 to Jim and Mae Baldwin Babb. She was a member and faithfully attended Midway Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Anna Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Flanary (April 2012); a sister, Bernice Jessee and brother, Orbin "Bud" Babb.

Anna Lee is survived by her devoted daughter Mildred Lane and husband, Dwight; granddaughters, Amy Lane Dooley and husband, Michael, Marsha Lane Barnett and husband, Travis; very special great grandchildren, Brevin and Amica Dooley, Mason and Layton Barnett; sister, Juanita Hutchins and husband, Wayne; sister-in-law, Nellie Babb and several very special nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY, Va. -- Mrs. Avonia Smith Flanary, 77, died at 1:15 p.m. Friday [11/1/1957] at her residence in the Midway Community.  She had been ill for a short time.

She was born in Scott County and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John Carrico, Mrs R. L. Lark, Mrs. Fred Renfro; one son, Kemp Flanary; four sisters, Mrs. Gene Davidson, Mrs. Lee Gillenwater, and Mrs. Milo Smith, all of Gate City and Mrs. N. M. Frazier of Appalachia; two brothers, Pat Smith, Wise and Ralph Smith of Gate City; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Pleasant Church with the Rev. Jimmy Boatwright conducting.  Burial will be in the family cemetery.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. — Barry “Hitchman” Flanary, 40, of Nickelsville, Va. passed away on Saturday, (Jan. 7, 2012) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.

Barry was a loving husband who always thought of his wife and her happiness. He was a dedicated and loving father who cherished every moment he spent with Ty. Words cannot express the love he felt for his family. Barry lived his life wide open and enjoyed every moment he had with all those who knew him. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, even in death.

He began his career as a welder and became the successful business owner of Hitchman LLC. He loved being outdoors and was a skilled woodworker. He was also a member of the Nickelsville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal granddaddy, Walker Cox; paternal papaw, John L. Flanary Sr.; and very special friend, John Wilburn.

Barry is survived by his loving wife, Clarissia Flanary of the home; his “Little Man”, Ty Flanary of the home; parents, John L. and Judy Flanary of Nickelsville, Va.; brother, Kelly Flanary of Bristol, Tenn.; maternal grandmother, Granny Faye Cox of Nickelsville, Va.; paternal grandmother, Mamaw Claudia Flanary of Nickelsville, Va.; mother and father-in-law, Allen and Donna Pruitt of St. Clairsville, Ohio; “Special Sister”, Tina Gilmer; “Special Friend”, Lesa Stapleton; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Receiving of friends will be from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va. and anytime at the residence of his parents.

A celebration of life will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Brandon Berg, Rev. Bill Rines, Rev. Joe Barber, and Pastor Steve Collins officiating.

Beulah Flanary passed into her eternal home on Monday, September 29, 2014 in Greenville, South Carolina after a brief illness. She was 99 years young. Mrs. Flanary was born on May 3, 1915 in Hunters Valley, Virginia. She attended school in Dungannon, Virginia and later married her sweetheart, Edward Ralph Flanary of Fort Blackmore, Virginia on January 6, 1937.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Edward Ralph Flanary, Sr., her mother and father, Charles Lee and Kate Osborne Greear, and siblings Lee, Margaret and Ray Greear, as well as an infant brother. She is further predeceased by a niece, Mary Greear McCarty

Mrs. Flanary is survived by her six children, Jean McReynolds and husband Joe of Bristol, Virginia; Barbara Button and husband Gilbert of Greenville, SC; Carolyn Helms and husband Fred of Gate City, Virginia; Edward Ralph Flanary, Jr. and wife Joli of Greenville, South Carolina; Kathy Hall of Floyd, Virginia; Patty Sanders of Greenville, South Carolina. Mrs. Flanary is further survived by 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, a very special sister-in-law, Elsie Greear of Dungannon, Virginia, and several great nieces and a great nephew.

Mrs. Flanary was a lifelong homemaker and nurturer of her six children. She was active in her community and she maintained life-long relationships even though she moved away from her beloved Dungannon. Her husband, Ralph, accepted the call of the ministry in 1953 and Mrs. Flanary served alongside her husband in his pastorship of Dungannon Free Will Baptist Church, Buffalo Free Will Baptist Church, Bull Run Free Will Baptist Church, Woodway Free Will Baptist Church, and Rock Hill Free Will Baptist Church, among others.

The family will receive friends at the Gate City Funeral Home in Gate City, Virginia beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, and the funeral services will be held in the Gene Falin Memorial chapel of the funeral home at 1:30 p.m., with the Reverend Darrell Pickle and the Reverend Steve Collins officiating. The graveside service will immediately follow at the Osborne Cemetery in Hardwood, Virginia.

Mrs. Flanary’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers and her sons-in-law will serve as honorary pallbearers.

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. — Bobby Jack Flanary, 68, of the Smith’s Chapel community in Pennington Gap, Va., was born in St. Charles, Va., on Thursday, June 20, 1940, and passed away at his home on Tuesday (May 12, 2009).

He had lived in Lee County, Va., most of his life. Bobby Jack retired as a coal miner and had his own dairy farm. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Charles, Va.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tim Flanary; his first wife, Alberta Flanary; parents, Hearl and Mae Flanary; three brothers, Eddie Ray, Chester and Jerry Flanary; and one sister Marie Winsby.

Bobby Jack is survived by his wife, Helen Joyce Flanary, of the home; one son, Mark Flanary and wife, Renee of the Sugar Run community; three daughters, Carolyn Mooney and husband, Mike of Louisville, Ky., Lisa Bailey and husband, Mike of the Dot community and Angie Calton and husband, Junior of Wise, Va.; nine grandchildren, Jordan and Matthew Mooney, Heather and Brandon Bailey, Tim and Lindsey Flanary, Josh Smith and Candice and Austin Calton; three great-grandchildren, Gracie, Rylie and Cadence. FORT BLACKMORE, Va. -- Callie Flanary, 96, Ridgecrest Manor Duffield, formerly of Fort Blackmore, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 1990) at Ridgecrest Manor.

She was a native of Scott County and a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

She had resided with her daughter-in-law, Lucy Flanary, in Fort Blackmore before moving to Ridgecrest Manor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Mary Owens Cox; her husband, Beaureguard Flanary; one son, Blaine Flanary; and one grandson, Damon Flanary.

Surviving are two great-grand­children; three great-great-grand­daughters; two half sisters, Dovie Begley, Mount Peliar, Ind., Lou Ada Chappell, Richmond, Va.; four half brothers, Joe Lane, Gussy Lane, Junior Lane and Roy Lane, all of Fort Blackmore.

KINGSPORT - Charles Herman Flanary, 62, Lynn Garden Drive, departed this life Thursday morning (July 13, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Scott County, Va., he was a retired painter from A&L Industries. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Poff Flanary, Kingsport; a son, Barry Flanary, Gate City, Va.; a stepson, Kenneth Arnold, Kingsport; four sisters, Mayleen Flanary and Imojean Flanary Osborne, both of Gate City, Va., Mary Flanary Head, Maryville, Tenn., and Jeri Flanary Wolfe, Morristown; two brothers, Dewey H. Flanary, Gate City, Va., and Harry L. Flanary, Pueblo, Colo.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. and anytime at the home of the sisters, 101 Barbar Road, Gate City.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Galliher and the Rev. Charles Boone officiating.

Music will be by Sallys Chapel Quartet.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holston View Cemetery.

GATE CITY, Va. -- Charles H. Flanary, 39, of Gate City Route 4, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday [January 2, 1960] at the Veteran's Hospital in Mountain Home Tennessee.

He was born and raised in Scott County and was a carpenter and electrician.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. L. C. Ellgass of Northfield, Ohio, and Mrs. Conley Ison of Gate City; one half-brother, Robert Flanary of Bossier City, La.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Weber City. The Rev. Paul Blessing will be in charge of services. Burial will be in the Veteran's Cemetery at Mountain Home.

Pallbearers include: Jimmy Summers, Robert Bise, C. B. Addington, Edmond Bolling, Paul Godsey, H. L. Johnson.

The body will remain at the Gate City Funeral Home.

GATE CITY, Va. — Clara Bell Flanary, 72, Gate City, Va., went to be with the Lord at 4:55 a.m. on Thursday ( Oct. 12, 2006 ) after a long illness while at the Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center .

A native of Sullivan County, Tenn. , she was born a daughter of the late Charles and Parlee Hensley Herron on February 14, 1934.

She was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd “Buck” Flanary (1995); sister, Hassie Falin; granddaughter, Gretchen Nicole Jenkins; and a son-in-law, Ronnie

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Jenkins and husband Phillip, Kingsport, Darlene Starnes, Kingsport, and Lisa Taylor and husband Scott Gate City, Va.; one son, Scotty Flanary and wife Kim, Kingsport; grandchildren, Levi Jenkins, Ashley Flanary, Chloe Jenkins, Shyanne Taylor, and Aiden Flanary; one great-grandchild, Caroline Jenkins; a very special friend, Doris Reeves, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Saturday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home.

The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Eckel Herron officiating.

Graveside committal services will be conducted on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Powers Cemetery , Speers Ferry, Va. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m. for those services.

KINGSPORT - Cosel E. Flanary, 77, died at 10 p.m. Sunday (April 7, 2002) at SunBridge Health Care.

Born in Scott County, he lived in Sullivan County most of his life. Mr. Flanary was a former employee of Sullivan County Highway Dept.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley Flanary and Louie Jane Bishop Flanary ; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Zeable) Harr and Mrs. Ralph (Innis) Sage; and a brother, Hagy L. Flanary .

Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Linda Gibson, Kingsport, and Judy Marlar and husband Bobby, Grenada, Miss.; one grandson, Josh Marlar, Ft. Bragg, N.C.; and one sister, Mrs. Delphia Price, Gonzalez, Fla.

Gate City, VA - Dewey Howard Flanary, 87, Gate City, VA went to be with his Heavenly Father, Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Holston Manor, Kingsport, TN.

Dewey was born in Scott County, VA on May 21, 1927 to the late James V. and Ida Rogers Flanary.

Mr. Flanary served in the U.S. Navy and spent 2 years on the Repair Ship USS Rigel. He worked for 42 years in the CE Division of the Eastman Kodak Company as a welder.

Dewey was a member of Ida Baptist Church, Speers Ferry, VA, where he served as an ordained Deacon, then was a member of Salley’s Chapel Baptist Church, Weber City, VA. He had a wonderful bass voice and sang for 55 years with Ida Quartet, Golden Key Quartet, and Salley’s Chapel Quartet. During those years he felt honored to sing at more than 500 funerals in the area.

In addition to his parents ; his sisters, Marie Hill, Imogene Osborne, Mayleen Flanary, Jeri Wolfe; brothers, J.V., Don and Herman preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65½ years, Colleen Flanary, Gate City, VA; sister, Mary Ann Head and husband, Darius, Maryville, TN; brother, Harry Flanary and wife, Roxie, Pueblo, CO; special nephew, Barry Flanary, Gate City, VA; many loving nieces and nephews; and special couple, David and Diane Jennings.

FT. BLACKMORE, Va. — George “Dewey” Flanary, 82, entered into rest Friday (June 6, 2008) at his residence.

He was born Feb. 28, 1926 in Scott County, Va. Mr. Flanary was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. and served his country in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Dungannon, Va. and also Pine Grove Baptist Church.

He was the son of the late William and Pearlie Frazier Flanary.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bill Head; sister, Mary B. Hawfield; niece, Norine Debruyne; nephew, David Hawfield; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

KINGSPORT — D.F. "Jay" Flanary, 86, of Kingsport, passed away on Tuesday afternoon (March 17, 2009) at Asbury Place-Steadman Hill after an extended illness surrounded by family and close friends.

Born in Scott County (Speers Ferry), Va., Jay moved to Kingsport in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jay was a member of Cedar View Independent Methodist Church and was retired from Eastman Corporation after 43 years services in the instruments department.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lee Gibson Flanary in 1992; his parents, Dillard and Myrtle Lynch Flanary; three brothers, Troy Flanary, Jessie James Flanary and Cecil Flanary; four sisters, Burdell Lee, Virginia Lee, Elsie Griffin and Nell Houseright.

Mr. Flanary is survived by his daughter, Anna Flanary Moreland and husband, Wes; two grandsons, Wes Moreland and wife, Jill and Brent Moreland; three great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Emily and Aiden; a special niece, Sharon Waldo and husband, Dan; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Riddle of Kingsport and Mrs. Pat (Jo) Davis of Gate City, Va.; his brother, Billy Flanary of Gate City; along with several nieces and nephews.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Rev. Edward Ralph Flanary Sr., passed into his eternal home on Sunday (Nov. 15, 2009) in Greenville, S.C.

Rev. Flanary was born on July 17, 1916 on Stoney Creek near Ft. Blackmore, Va. He graduated from Dungannon High School and married his sweetheart, Beulah H. Greear on Jan. 6, 1937.

Rev. Flanary is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He accepted the call to the ministry in approximately 1953 and continued in ministry until age 90. He served as pastor of Dungannon Free Will Baptist Church for 13 years. He also served as pastor of Buffalo Free Will Baptist Church, Bull Run Free Will Baptist Church, Woodway Free Will Baptist Church and Rock Lick Free Will Baptist Church, among others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton M. Flanary and Maude Elizabeth Harris Flanary; and siblings, Kyle Harris Flanary, Rex Ward Flanary and Ann Flanary Long.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah; and six children, Jean McReynolds and husband, Joe, Bristol, Va.; Barbara Button and husband, Gilbert, Greenville, S.C., Carolyn Helms and husband, Fred, Gate City, Va., Edward Ralph Flanary, Jr. and wife, Joli, Greenville, S.C.; Kathy Hall, Floyd, Va. and Patty Sanders, Greenville, S.C. He is further survived by 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; his sister, Thelma Flanary Cole, Milford, Del.; and special sister-in-law, Elsie Greear, Dungannon, Va.

Ella J. Flanary, age 92 of Kingsport, went to her Heavenly Home on Sunday, August 3, 2014.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Weber City and employed at Tennessee Eastman and Kingsport Press. Ella was a member of the American Legion of Kingsport, a lifetime member of Rebekah Lodge #17 of Kingsport and Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She taught water aerobics at various locations. Ella enjoyed making dulcimers and baskets. She also enjoyed quilting, cooking and baking.

Ella was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Claude W. Flanary; 2 sisters; and 3 brothers.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Claudette Obenschain and her husband Richard of Staunton, VA; son, David Flanary and his wife Theresa of Kingsport, TN; three grandchildren, Scott Obenschain and his wife Anita of New Orleans, LA, Sarah Lockhart and her husband Chris of Staunton, VA and Rebecca Flanary of Kingsport, TN; three great-grandchildren, Iris Lockhart, Rexton Obenschain and Fletcher Lockhart; sister, Betty Grace and her husband Sherman; brother, William E. Jones and his wife Edna; sister-in-law, Jackie Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY -- Emory L. Flanary, 65, died Sunday [Nov 30, 1958] at 1:30 p.m. of a heart attack.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a member of the First Baptist Church here. He was a retired highway foreman, having been employed with the state since 1946. He was also a member of Rebecca Lodge No. 80 and the Oddfellow Lodge No. 170 of Gate City.

He was the son of the late Floyd and Ella Broyles Flanary.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Hammond Flanary, Gate City; two daughters, Miss Vivian Flanary, Gate City, and Mrs. Osman Cox, Ft. Blackmore; one sister, Mrs. Nola Flanary, Kingsport, and one granddaughter.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Florence Arnold Flanary, 88, 2018 Sherwood Drive, died Monday ( Jan. 6, 2003 ) at Appalachian Christian Village following a lengthy illness.

A native of Hawkins County , Mrs. Flanary was a daughter of the late James and Lillie Williams Duncan.

She was a homemaker and an artist.

Mrs. Flanary was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Lizzie Calton.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Woodrow Flanary, of the home; one son, Roy M. Arnold, Commerce Township , Mich. ; one brother, Earl Duncan, Key West , Fla. ; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

KINGSPORT - Harry E. Flanary, 91 of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 01, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1915 in Lee County, Va. near Jonesville. After graduation from Dryden High School he attended Lincoln Memorial University. He was employed by the Tennessee Eastman Company, before enlisting in the U.S. Army just about six weeks prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was in combat in the South Pacific and after the war returned to work at the Eastman where he stayed until he retired in 1981.

He was a Charter Member of the Holston View Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign War. Harry was an avid Pool Player and played at the Kingsport Renaissance Senior Center. Before becoming ill, he enjoyed walking at the Ft. Henry Mall.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia G. Flanary; his parents, Nelson and Minnie Flanary; and three brothers, Ronald, Royce and Paul Flanary.

Surviving is his loving wife of 8 years, Margaret Connie Flanary; two step-daughters, Janice Cobb, of Nashville and Gail Hunt and her husband, James, of Kingsport; four step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; several nieces, a nephew, several cousins and a host of many friends.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 3, 2007) at the Holston View United Methodist Church, Weber City, Va.

Funeral services will follow immediately in the church with Rev. Bob Copeland, officiating.

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Helen (Craft) Flanary, 86, went home to be with Jesus. Monday (May 5, 2008) at Wellmont Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

She was born in Keokee. She was a volunteer at Lonesome Pine Hospital and Heritage Hall Nursing Home for approximately 20 years. She was a member of the Bride of Christ Church in Appalachia and frequently visited many of the local churches in the area.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, William "Ray" Flanary; her parents, Cleve And Tiny Craft; brothers, Okre, Victor and Curtis Craft; sisters, Lorene Gibson, Verdie Wilder, Minnie King.

She is survived by her children, Larry Flanary and wife, Glenda of Big Stone Gap, Va., Shelia Stephen and husband, Darrell of Graham, Wash., Curtis Flanary and wife, Vickey of Church Hill, Theresa Delph and husband, Wayne of Kingsport; sister, Vivian (Bib) Reasor; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many friends in Christ.

The family will receive friends at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Glenda Flanary and Wayne Delph officiating.

Gate City, VA - Howard Flanary, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. Howard was born on March 7, 1923 in Fort Blackmore, VA. He was the last surviving child of Alonzo and Nannie Baker Flanary. Howard accepted the Lord as his personal Savior the age of 85, and since that day he let it be known that he loved everybody. He faithfully attended Midway Baptist Church as long as his health allowed him to do so.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his brothers, Amel, Hobart, and Fred Flanary; and sisters, Callie Flanary Rhoton, Marie Flanary Pierson, Dona Flanary Summey, Pearlie Flanary Moore, and Mary Flanary.

Howard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Lee Babb Flanary; daughter, Mildred Flanary Lane and husband Dwight; granddaughters, Amy Lane Dooley and husband Michael, and Marsha Lane Barnett and husband Travis; and very special great grandchildren Brevin and Amica Dooley, and Mason and Layton Barnett.

Richmond, VA - Command Sergeant Major James R. Flanary, age 76, passed away October 25, 2013 at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond and has taken his final assignment in Heaven.

James was born in Scott County, VA on May 14, 1937 to the late Lester and Elsie Flanary. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Cecil Flanary.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years Carolyn Elliott Flanary, son, Mark Elliott Flanary, and loyal puppy Abby (daddy's girl), of Richmond, VA; brother, Charles Flanary and wife Carletta of Weber City; several bothers- and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews and two very special young ladies, Kayla and Mackenzie Grosser, to whom he was a special grandpa.

He began his distinguished military career by enlisting in the Virginia Army National Guard as a Private in the 1030th Engineer Battalion in March 1955. He worked his way up through the ranks in the Battalion and served in every key enlisted leadership position including Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, and served in the full-time position of Battalion Operations Non-Commissioned Officer. In the early 1970's he was selected for assignment to the senior non-commissioned officer position as Command Sergeant Major of the Battalion. In 1973, he became the first enlisted commandant of the Virginia Army National Guard Noncommissioned Officer Academy.

In 1982, he was selected to become the Virginia Army National Guard's first full-time Command Sergeant Major, the top enlisted position in the State. He held this position until his military retirement in March 1997, culminating in 42 years of military service. During this assignment and in addition to his normal duties, he served on various study groups, advisory panels and boards for the Virginia National Guard and the National Guard Bureau. He was often called upon by the National Guard of other states to assist them in an advisory status. He was the senior enlisted advisor to three Adjutants General of Virginia.

Almost immediately after his military retirement, he continued his service as a state employee in the Post Headquarters at Fort Pickett as a Staff Assistant. He spent the next 14 years serving the Commonwealth in this capacity, retiring on December 11, 2011, making a total of more than 56 years of combined service.

Command Sergeant Major Flanary will forever be remembered for his patriotism and his sincere devotion to his family, his country, his state and the soldiers that he represented. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

KINGSPORT — Linda Church Flanary, 59, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2009) following a lengthy illness at Indian Path Medical Center with her family at her side.

She was born on Feb. 21, 1949, in Kingsport. Linda was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Judy Carty; and her parents, Frank and Grace Cannon Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Flanary and her son, Eric Flanary, both of the home; one brother, James Church; three sisters, Esther Steward, Ann Horton and Revonda Chapman, all of Kingsport; a special niece, Angie Church; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff that cared for Linda at Wexford House and the special nurses and doctors in the ICU unit at Indian Path Medical Center.

GATE CITY, Va. — Mayleen Flanary, 80, of Gate City, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday night (May 13, 2009) at her residence following a brief illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. Mayleen attended Rye Cove High School. She retired from Eastman Kodak (Polymers Division) with 39 years of service. Miss Flanary attended Salley’s Chapel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ida Rogers Flanary; her sisters, Marie Hill and Imojean Osborne; brothers, Alvin D. Flanary, James V. Flanary, Charles H. Flanary; her nephews, Brian Flanary and Daniel Albert Wolfe.

Mayleen Flanary is survived by her brothers, Dewey Flanary and his wife, Colleen (Gate City, Va.), Harry Flanary and his wife, Roxana (Pueblo, Colo.); her sisters, Mary Ann Head and her husband, Darius (Maryville, Tenn.), Jeri Wolfe and her husband, Albert (Morristown, Tenn.)

He was a native of Scott County, a veteran of World War II. He was retired superintendent of the Water Plant, Doswell, (Hanover County) Va.

Mr. Flanary attended Gate City United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas G. and Margaret Hargis Flanary.

EAST STONE GAP, Va. - William "Ray" Flanary, 85 of East Stone Gap, Va. went home to be with Jesus Sunday, (March 18, 2007) at Wellmont Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

He was born in Arno, Va. He worked for Stonega Coke and Coal Co. and joined the Army Air Core in 1942, when he returned home he went to work for U.S. Steel Coal Co. in Lynch, Ky, until he retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Bride of Christ Church in Appalachia and frequently visited many of the local churches in the area. He also held prayer meetings in his home every Tuesday night with Brother Eddie Blanton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. James Vilder Flanary; and mother Vesta Flanary; two brothers, Lewis "Ed" Flanary and Earl Flanary; three sisters, Virgie Flanary, Ethel Cornett, and Eppie Jennings.

Marie M. Flanary, 76, of Kingsport, went to her Heavenly home on Monday, March 17, 2014.

She was born on May 10th, 1937 to the late Carl and Nannie Mullins. A native of Lee County and a graduate of Dryden High School, she graduated from National Business College in Knoxville, Tenn. Mrs. Flanary was retired from Daughtery Brothers Chevrolet, Inc. in Gate City, where she worked as office manager for 41 ½ years.

She was a past president of the Pilot Club of Kingsport, and was installed Governor for the 2004-2005 term of the Tennessee District of Pilot International. Marie was always trying to improve the quality of life in her community and was a member of First Christian Church of Kingsport.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Flanary; and brother, Robert Mullins.

Left to cherish her memory are one sister, Shirley Miller and husband Homer of Elizabethton; sister-in-law, Peggy Mullins; two aunts, Merle Edwards and Ruth Massengill of Duffield, VA; two nephews, several cousins; and her beloved pet, Shadow.

The family will receive friends in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Friday, March 21st, 2014 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Minister Phip Sams, officiating.

KINGSPORT — Robert “Bud” Flanary, 52, of Kingsport passed away Monday (March 17, 2014) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born at Clinchport, Va. and has resided in the area his entire life.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Clarence and Jeanette Shupe Flanary; niece Le’Anne Thacker; and nephew Dustin Shupe.

GATE CITY, Va. - Roy C. "Cecil" Flanary, 73, Route 6, Daniel Boone community passed away Thursday (Feb. 24, 2005) at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law in Gate City.

He was born in Scott County, Va. on June 30, 1931 and was the son of the late Dillard F. Flanary and Myrtle Lynch Flanary. He served for eight years in Gate City National Guard and retired from Penn Dixie Cement Industry and Tele-Optics, Inc.

Mr. Flanary was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie Griffin, Virginia Lee, Burdell Lee and Nell Houseright; brothers, Jessie James Flanary and Troy Flanary.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne Johnson Flanary, of the home; daughter, Sharon Flanary Waldo and husband Dan, Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Kristin W. Marshall and husband Kevin and Caralee Waldo, all of Johnson City; great-grandson, Hayden Matthew Marshall; sisters, Mamie F. Vickey Flanary, age 64, born February 22, 1950 in Rodah, VA, of Surgoinsville, TN, went to be with the Lord on May, 13, 2014.

She was a member of Apostolic Lighthouse in Kingsport, TN, and former associate pastor of Grace Learning Center, Big Stone Gap, VA. She was a cofounder and CEO of Flanary and Sons Trucking (FAST) of Church Hill, TN and Burkburnett, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Eliza Blanken of Big Stone Gap, VA; brothers, Billy Blanken and Pete Blanken.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Woodrow Flanary, 90, 2018 Sherwood Dr., Apt. 228, died after an extended illness, Sunday ( Aug. 22, 2004 ) at Northside Hospital .

He was a native of Jonesville , Va. , the son of the late William Harvey and Willie Rebecca Flanary of Jonesville.

Dr. Flanary was a 1933 graduate of Jonesville High School and received his A.B. degree from Emory and Henry College in 1937, his M.A. degree in English from Vanderbilt University in 1939, and Doctor of Education degree from the University of Virginia in 1953.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the 98th Infantry in 1943-44 and as a staff member in the G-2 (intelligence) division of the POE headquarters at Fort Shafter in Honolulu , where he was an aerial photo interpreter and cartographer in 1944-46.

He had a long and distinguished career as a college professor for 40 years. He taught English at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1939-40, English, French, Math and Geography at Emory and Henry College from 1940-1950, except for three years out (43-46) when he was in the Army. From 1950-1953, he pursued his course work for the Doctor of Education degree, while teaching graduate courses in diagnostic and remedial techniques in reading.

Upon receiving his EdD degree in 1953, he taught in the College of Education at East Carolina College, 1953-1957, East TN State College 1957-1962, Northeast Louisiana State College 1962-1967, where he was director of the Reading Laboratory for College Students, and at Memphis State University 1967 until his retirement in 1979. At Memphis State he became the director of testing for the Nuclear Studies Program when in 1974 Memphis State was selected by the Southern Governors' Conference to be the Center for training Nuclear Power Operators.

Upon retirement he was granted the status of Associate Professor Emeritus. He is a member of several learned societies.

After retirement, he moved back to Johnson City .

He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church .

Dr. Flanary was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lee Boy Flanary; his son, Dr. James Stephen Flanary; his second wife, Florence Arnold Flanary; three sisters, Jeanette Flanary Price, Anna Mae Flanary and Ollie Bell Flanary Jones.

He is survived by one sister, Edith Hopkins, Surprize, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Claude C. Jones, Jonesville, Va.; his daughter-in-law, Debra Lynn Flanary, Memphis; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marler Frank, Atlanta, Ga., and Natalie Elise Marler, Nashville; one stepson, Roy Arnold, Flint, Mich.; three nieces, Rothella Flenor, Noblesville, Ind., Peggy Bush, Jonesville, Va., and Linda Cheryl Suffel, Surprize, Ariz.; three nephews, William "Billy" Adkins, Jonesville, Va., Norman A. Jones, Blue Ridge, Va., and Dennis C. Jones, Tazewell, Va.; many great and great-great nephews, great and great-great nieces.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.

DUNGANNON - Worley Flanary, 73, of Dungannon, died at Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, Saturday morning after a brief illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County , a veteran of World War I, and was retired from Bethlehem Steel Company of McRoberts , Ky.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Melissa Flanary; daughters, Mrs. Beulah Pendlelon and Mrs. Nina Jennings, both of Kingsport, and Mrs. Shelby Roberson, Wise; sons, Alfred of Snowflake, Va., and Johnny of Dungannon; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. (DST) at Dungannon Freewill Baptist Church . Rev. Ralph Flanary and Rev. James Boatright will officiate. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery .

The family will receive friends at the Scott County Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and also at the Flanary home in Dungannon.

KINGSPORT — Ruby Minga Fleenor, 92, of Kingsport, passed away on Monday (June 15, 2009) after an extended illness.

She was a Sullivan County native for most of her life. For many years of her life, she was very involved with her Sunday school class and in the women’s circle. She was an avid and excellent bridge player.

Mrs. Fleenor was preceded in death by her parents, John Abraham Minga and Cora Exer Blalock Minga; husband, Ezra Harold Fleenor; four brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT — Shirley Donihe Fleming, 75, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Wednesday ( April 9, 2008 ) at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was a graduate of Lynn View High School . She was a sales associate of Donihe Graphics for over 30 years. Mrs. Fleming was a member of Kingsport Community Church where she taught Sunday school for over 25 years, youth director, and member of the church choir. She was very active in her community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Garnie and Eva (Hartgrove) Donihe; three brothers, Homer Donihe, Bobby Donihe and Tommy Donihe; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gladys Damron and T.J. “Jack” Fleming.

She was born in Hancock County, TN, and retired from Eastman. Ann was a founding member of Shekinah Church in 1973.

She was preceded in death by her parents Claiborne and Mary Neeley; husband, Lowell Fletcher; sisters, Virginia Taylor, Amanda Myers, and Ida Hall; two nephews, Clabe Myers and Gene Taylor.

Surviving are her niece and goddaughter, Jo-rita Gragg of Kingsport, niece, Delores Vicars of Kingsport; nephews, Gary Grills of Mt. WEBER CITY, Va. - Ava Nell Smith Fletcher, 95, a resident of Wexford House since 1995 and formerly of Weber City, Va., went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning (Aug. 6, 2002) at the Wexford House.

She was a native of Scott County, Va., and retired from the Kingsport Press with 35 years of service. She was a former member of the Eastern Star Gate City chapter and was a lifetime member of the P.T.A. She volunteered for over 5000 hours at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Edward Fletcher; parents, Walter Jackson Smith and Sallie Irene Wolfe Smith; sisters, Leota Wood Gardner, Reba Louise Smith and Velma Wilhelm; and brother, Echol Smith.

Born June 24, 1952, in Hawkins County, he retired as maintenance tech and former owner of Berried Treasures & Cranberry Lane. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Kingsport and Christmas Connection. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Gateway Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Edgar Sr. and Nellie Greer Fletcher.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Snedegar Fletcher of Mt. Sterling; one daughter, Stephanie (J.W.) Conley of Mt. Born in Nickelsville, Va., he served in the U.S. Air Force, being stationed in Germany for over four years. He was a graduate of VPI College of Engineering. He also attended the University of Central Florida.

Mr. Fletcher was a member of several different civil and fraternal organizations. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Marie Jeffers; sons, Thomas Lee Fletcher, Harold Patton Fletcher and Bobby Joe Fletcher; his parents, Joe Bill Fletcher Sr. and Goldie Harris Fletcher; four sisters; one brother; grandparents, Henry Fletcher and Callie Dona Addington Fletcher, and A.P. Harris and Mazzie Robinson Harris.

Surviving are one son, James Edwin Fletcher, Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Gillian Fletcher and Benjamin Fletcher; sister, Bettie Jean Starnes and husband James, Kingsport; special aunt and uncle, Cecil Harris and wife, Bonnie Collins Harris, Kingsport.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Addington Frame Church Cemetery, Nicklesville, Va., with Rev. Clarence Bear officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Hammond Post # 3 and Gate City Post #265, Joe W. Byrd, Chaplain. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m.

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Henry C. Fletcher, 61, Rt. 3, Clinchport, died at Lonesome Pine Hospital Friday night [ 3/4/1977 ] after a brief illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a retiree of the Clinchfield Railroad. He attended the Methodist Church .

He is survived by his wife, Stella Lane Fletcher, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Mae Johnson and Mrs. Joyce Marie Johnson, both of Clinchport; three sons, James, Eugene and Larry, all of Clinchport; one sister, Dona Mae Hensley of Gate City; two brothers, Walter of Gate City and Elmer of Clinchport, and 10 grandchildren.

Mabel Priscilla Fletcher, 73, 1521 Highpoint Avenue, died Wednesday (March 18, 1992) at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was born in Scott County, Va., and had resided in Kingsport for most of her life.

She had worked as a nurse's aide and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William R. and Lula O. Penley Henry; one son, Gary Lee Fletcher; two sisters, Clara Bell Henry and Ruth Hillman; and two brothers, Rayford Henry and Arville Henry.

Surviving are one daughter, Christine Lord, Halfmoon Bay, Calif.; three sons, Lawrence Wayne Fletcher and Donald B. Fletche~, both of Kingsport, and William Carl Fletcher, Newport News, Va.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita Henry, Kingsport, Gladys Hillman, Virginia, and Irene Hillman, Ohio; two brothers, Jay Henry and Tommy Henry, both of Virginia.

KINGSPORT - Nellie Kate Greer Fletcher, 79, went home to be with her Lord Thursday (Oct. 31, 2002) at the Wexford House after an extended illness.

Nellie was born Sept. 18, 1923 in Kingsport and was a daughter of the late Clifford and Pearl (Spears) Greer. Nellie was a Christian and attended many churches in the area. She was married to the late Edgar Fletcher Sr.

In addition to her parents and husband, a brother, Wallace Greer and sister, June Smith and a very special friend Annabelle Harold, preceded her in death.

Nellie was a loving mother, sister and grandmother. She loved quilting, flowers and people.

Surviving are her loving family: a daughter, Nancy Fletcher Whitten of Kingsport; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Carol Fletcher of Kingsport, John Fletcher, Louis and Marie Fletcher, all of Georgia, Scott and Linda Fletcher of Kentucky; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlene Castle of Kingston, Tenn.; two brothers, Eugene (Buddy) Greer and wife, Dexal of Kingsport and the Rev. Andrew Greer and wife, Georgia, of Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends; very special friends, Ruby Simerly, Martha and Danny Jones and family, and Frances Herron.

Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. today at East Lawn Funeral Home and anytime at the home of her daughter, Nancy.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Rebecca Jane Lucas Fletcher, 86, passed away Sunday (July 7, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born in Scott County on March 31, 1916 to the late Grover Cleveland and Easter Ellen Cox Lucas. She was a homemaker and attended House of Prayer Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Byron Fletcher; daughter, Mae Lucas; three brothers, three sisters; and one stepson.

KINGSPORT - Ross "Buddy" Fletcher, 81, of Nickelsville, Va., went to be with the Lord Wednesday (Oct. 13, 2004) after a period of declining health.

He was born in Russell County, Va. After graduating from high school, he served his country in the European theater with the 164th engineer combat battalion through the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

He was a lifetime member of Kingsport VFW #3382 and a member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688 Chapter 195, Commandry 33, Council 117, Jericho Temple of the Shrine Temple of Kingsport and the Scottish Rite of Knoxville.

He retired from Kingsport Press in 1989, Hawkins County plant as a lab. supervisor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville, Va.

Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice McCoy Fletcher; parents, Frank and Pearl Owens Fletcher; one sister, Hazel Edwards; and a brother, Frank Fletcher.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo (Quillen) Fletcher of the home; one stepdaughter and husband, Teresa and Bill Vicars; and a stepson and wife, Tim and Jean Quillen, all of Nickelsville, Va.; stepgrandchildren, Mark and wife Wendy Vicars, Le Anne and husband Tony Shelton, Lisa and husband Barry Calhoun, all of Nickelsville, Va., Tracy and husband Anthony Hart of Honaker, Va.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Savannah Vicars, Ivey Jo Hart, Cole Shelton, Michael and Conner Calhoun; two sisters, Ruby Breeden of Alcoa, Tenn., and JoAnne Eversole of Whitesburg, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Scott County , she was a daughter of the late Worley and Suzie Christian Lane , and was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Fletcher.

Surviving are her daughters, Lizzie Fletcher Johnson, Clinchport, and Joyce Fletcher, East Stone Gap, Va.; sons, James Fletcher, Larry Fletcher and Eugene Fletcher, all of Clinchport; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Walter (Junior) Fletcher Jr., 56, 105 Kane Court, died late Sunday afternoon (March 14, 1999) at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Scott County, Va., he was in the insurance business for over 30 years. Junior was a devoted Christian and a most loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Fletcher Sr., in May 1997.

Wanda Sue Fletcher, 69, of Mt. Carmel, went to be with the Lord, Monday November 25, 2013 at Life Care Center of Gray.

She was born and has lived most of her life in the Kingsport area. Sue was a loving mother who cared deeply for her family. She made all her children’s clothes, took them to church and tried to raise them the best that she could.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Myrtle Pierson and sister, Sandy Pierson,

June Fogleman, age 83 of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on March 3, 2013, after a short stay at Indian Path Medical Center. Mrs. Fogleman was born on February 25, 1930 in Dorchester, VA, to the late Walter and Lola Darnell. She was a native of Scott County, VA, in Indian Creek, then moved to Kingsport, where she resided for the rest of her life. June ran a restaurant in Bloomingdale called the Desta Kup, where she proudly served the community for 37 years, feeding thousands of children from Ketron High School and local residents with the finest food in the community!

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, T.L. Fogleman of 37 years, special granddaughter, Kelli Carter Hood of Kingsport, aunt, Mable Wampler of Kingsport, sister-in-law, Lois Darnell of Blountville, brother-in-law, Morgan Fortner of Kingsport, and uncle, Leland McMurray Albuquerque, NM.

Survivors include her sons: Jerry W. Carter, Mike Carter and wife Kim, Jeffery S. Carter, all of Kingsport; three brothers: Jack Darnell and wife Betty, Paul Darnell of Blountville and Billy Joe Darnell and wife Sue of Kingsport; two sisters, Janette Fortner and Joyce Ketron; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and special aunt Nelsie along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Eugene Osbourne, officiating. Burial will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in East Lawn Memorial Park. Everyone is asked to assemble in the cemetery by 10:45 a.m. for the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

GATE CITY -- David Ralph Folden, 50 of Rt. 2, Gate City, died Friday after a long illness.

He was a former employe of the City of Kingsport .  He was born in Sullivan County and had been living in Scott County for a number of years.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vivian Irene Folden; daughters, Mrs. Phillip Peters, Mrs. Bobby Cleek, Mrs. Jimmy Baker and Mrs. Bradley Dillowe, all of Indiana; sons, Melvin E. and Clarence I. Folden, both of Indiana; Richard Wayne and Jackie Harold Folden, both of Gate City; a sister, Mrs. Rachel Blackburn, Blountville; mother, Mrs. Ester Sims, Knoxville; and 10 grandchildren.

KINGSPORT — Pearl Gilliam Forbes, 79, of Kingsport, passed away Sunday (July 27, 2008) at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

She had lived in Kingsport for the past 75 years. Pearl formerly worked at Roses Luncheonette, later owned the Fountain Bleu Restaurant and had been a member of Power Point Ministries for more than 60 years (formerly Assembly Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, Highland). She was affectionately known as the "caregiver" within the family.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Lewis Forbes; her parents, Haburn and Louise Gilliam; two brothers, Oscar "Buzz" Gilliam of Johnson City and Arthur Gilliam of Kingsport; and one sister, Hazel Ryans of Kingsport.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Forbes Alaniz of Kingsport; a son, Gary L. Forbes and wife, Alma of Weaverville, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Garland Gilliam of Savannah, Tenn., Ralph Gilliam of Somerset, Ky., Linnie Gilliam of Gray and Mack Gilliam of Kingsport; and two sisters, Shirley Waycaster of Johnson City and JoAnn Compton of Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Simon R. Forbes, 96 years, 11 months, and 2 weeks old, of Kingsport, passed away at Wexford House on Thursday evening (April 13, 2006), with his family by his side, following a period of declining health.

He was born in Greene County, Tenn., on April 29, 1909. Mr. Forbes moved to Kingsport at an early age and was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company as a security guard with 40 years service, retiring in 1972.

Mr. Forbes was a lifelong 55-year board member of Apostolic Lighthouse, where he attended faithfully until his health declined. He loved the Lord and his church. The highlight of his life were the two trips he made to the Holy Land.

He was an avid gardener and golfer in his retirement years.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Velma Peters Forbes; parents, Harrison and Josephine Forbes; three brothers, Harvey, Dewey, and Bob Forbes; four sisters, Carrie Dykes, Lealie Lane, Etta Lane, and Lucille Estepp; brothers and sisters-in-law, Malcolm and Lucille Peters, Roy and Cleo Peters, Harold "Pete" Peters, and Gertie Peters.
