Connie J. (Stidham) Akers Weber
City, VA – Connie J. Akers, 81, loving mother and grandmother, of Weber
City, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday,
January 18, 2013. Ms. Akers was born June 13, 1931 in Clay Morgan,
Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William Morris Stidham and
Margaret Bently Stidham. During her lifetime, Ms. Akers worked many years
in the restaurant industry. Ms. Akers loved to cook. She was also a
faithful Christian who loved to read her Bible, write poems and gospel
songs. She truly loved the Lord. Ms. Akers was of the Baptist faith and
attended Victory Baptist Church. In
addition to her parents, Ms. Akers is preceded in death by her husband,
John E. Akers Sr.; her sister, Bea Murray; and 2 brothers, Frank Stidham
and Roy Stidham. Survivors
of Connie J. Akers include 4 daughters, Norma Bennett and husband Bruce
(Kiln, MS), Donna Hyatt (Kingsport, TN), Janice Litz (Blountville, TN),
and Mary Cody (Blountville, TN); 3 sons, Woody Akers and wife Linda (Weber
City, VA), Ronald Akers (Gate City, VA), and John Akers Jr. (Gate City,
VA); 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren;
3 sisters; 3 brothers; special cousin and friend, Marlene Davidson (Gate
City, VA); special friend, Betty Mann (Gate City, VA). The
family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January
22, 2013 at Colonial Funeral Home (Weber City, VA). A
funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Graveside
services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at
Holston View Cemetery (Weber City, VA). Those wishing to attend are asked
to meet at Colonial Funeral Home no later than 1:30 p.m. to go to the
cemetery in procession. Robert Meador III, Brian Younger, Matt Hensley,
Jamie McDavid, Mike Davidson, Woodrow Akers, and Bruce Bennett will serve
as pallbearers. The

CITY, Va. - Emily Grace Leeann Akers, 2, of Route 1, passed away Sunday
(June 29, 2003) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Emily
was born on May 8, 2001 in Kingsport. She
was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Arlie Bishop;
paternal great-grandmother, Betty Akers. Surviving
are her parents, Travis and Rachel Akers, of the home; sister, Katlin Lois
Beth Akers, of the home; maternal grandparents, Artie and Rhonda Bishop,
Clinchport, Va.; paternal grandfather, Eddie Clendenin, Kingsport;
paternal grandmother, Patsy Rhoton, Gate City, Va.; great-grandmother,
Lura Bishop, Clinchport, Va.; great-grandparents, Emory and Stella Kern,

Lane Janette (Pierson) Akers GATE CITY, Va. — Janette Pierson Akers,
passed away Sunday (Jan. 18, 2009) at Brian Center, Weber City, Va. Kingsport Times-News Evangelist
Ray Akers GATE CITY, Va. - Evangelist Ray Akers, 75, entered
into rest Wednesday (April 28, 2004) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical
Center. He retired from Bays Mountain Construction Co.,
and Eastman Kodak after 40 years of service. After retirement, he was a
local evangelist of the Baptist faith until his death. He was born in Scott County, Va., on June 7, 1928
to the late Charlie Akers and Pearl Hammond Akers. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by
his two sisters, Janie Davidson and Lula Herron; brothers, Carl, Gladys,
Howard and John Akers, infants, Otis and Willie. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Smith Akers,
Gate City, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Thomas (Renea) Adams,
Kingsport; sons, Jimmy and Dennis Akers, both of Gate City, Va.; two
sisters, Mary Lane, Clinchport, Va., and Mami Lee "Sis"
Jennings, Yuma, Va.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
today at Gate City Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m.
Friday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Jim
Gibson officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the

Born in Kingsport on Sept. 21, 1976, she was the daughter of Paul and Debbie Overbay Pierson. She attended Tipton's Chapel Church and graduated from Rye Cove High School. Apt. 3, Johnson City, died Monday (May 19, 2008) at his home. Jeff was a son of Jack and Maria Allen. Ruth (Addington) Alley Mrs. Wallace (Billie) Alley, 59, 1403 Brightridge Drive, Kingsport,
died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 10, 1987) at Holston Valley Hospital
& Medical Center after a long illness. She was born in Sullivan County and had lived most of her life in
Kingsport. She was a member of Mafair United Methodist Church, a
graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and active in many church and
community organizations. Surviving are her husband, Wallace D. Alley, Kingsport; three sons,
Douglas Alley, Martin Alley and David Alley, all of Kingsport; one
granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. John (Martine) Haynes and Mrs. Virgil
(Helen) Meyers, both of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Ruby

VA - Chester Curtis Alley, 74, of the Mabe/Stanley Community, Duffield,
VA went to Heaven cradled in the arms of Jesus on Friday, January 29,
2010 at 5:36 p.m. at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Born in
Scott County, VA, he was a man of God with great faith. He often
attended Durhams Chapel Church, but loved visiting other churches and
hearing the songs of praise. He was a "simple" man with the
patience of Job, who loved his family. He will be missed by all who knew
him. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Laura Bates Alley; four
brothers, Joe, LoFie, Eugene, and Ralph; two sisters, Zella Alley
Williams and Polly Alley Kern; and son-in-law, Jerry Mitchell Vaughn. Surviving
is his loving wife of fifty-two years, Jerroline Owens Alley, Duffield,
VA; two daughters, Sherry Alley Vaughn Sawyer and husband, Travis,

She was born Aug. 28, 1925 in Scott County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Milligan and Lizzie Anna Culbertson Starnes. Clala was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gate City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Lee (E.L.) Alley; sisters, Callie (Reese) Falin and Maxie DeZarn; one brother, Fred Starnes. Elmer Otis Alley CHURCH HILL - Elmer Otis Alley, 86, of 4514 Stanley Valley Rd., passed away Thursday morning (Oct. 27, 2005) at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Scott County, Va., but had resided in Hawkins County the majority of his life. Mr. Alley served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Company C 38th regiment infantry division. He worked at Joseph's Watch Sales and Repair in Kingsport before retiring from the Tennessee Eastman Company in 1979 with 37 years of service. Elmer's favorite hobby was woodworking. He belonged to Okolona United Methodist Church in Stanley Valley where he had served as Sunday School superintendent for many years. Elmer Alley is preceded in death by his grandson, Joel Scott Alley; his parents, Robert and Annie McConnell Alley; along with an infant brother. Mr. Alley is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Roller Alley; two sons, Doyle Alley and his wife, Nancy of Yuma, Va., Jerry Alley and his wife, Brenda of Maryville, Tenn.; a daughter, Brenda Mason and her husband, Joe of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Sherri Pesterfield, Terri Best, Angie Alley, Bradley Alley, Jennifer Mason and Bethany Alley; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Pesterfield, Luke Mason and Olivia Mason; a sister, Marie Merrill of Kingsport; a brother, Edgar Alley and his wife, Elsie of Church Hill; along with several nieces and nephews. - Emerson M. Alley, 77, entered into rest Sunday (Nov. 17, 2000) at 2:40
a.m. at his home after a two year bout with cancer. Emerson
was born in Scott County, Va. and lived in Kingsport most of his life.
He retired from Eastman Kodak Company on Jan. 1, 1985 with 43 years of
service. He
was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving as
Master Sergeant. He was a member of the Tennessee National Guard, 278th
RCT and a member of the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3. On
the 10th of December, Emerson and his wife Evelyn celebrated their 50th
Wedding Anniversary. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton C. and Rosa Alley; two
sisters, Lucille Alley and Mrs. Robert (Blanche) Martin. Surviving
are his wife, Evelyn Buckingham Alley, of the home; his twin sister,
Mrs. Lowell (Lola) Maness, Kingsport; two nieces and four nephews; and
special friends, Howard and Audrey Overbay of Kingsport. Calling

HILL – Freddie D. Alley, 72, passed away at his residence after a courageous
battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Freddie
was a licensed Land Surveyor and a local developer for many years. He followed
his grandfather and uncles as a surveyor and was in the first group of surveyors
licensed in the state. He was a Charter and Fellow member of the Tennessee
Association of Professional Surveyors serving in many different capacities. He
was a former owner of Hugh E. Alley & Sons and Alley & Associates, Inc.
in Kingsport. He served on the Church Hill Planning Commission and was the
current chairman. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Oneal and Maude Grace Alley, sister,
Mickey Fraysier, brother in law, Glen Lawson, sister in law, Kate Lawson, and
mother in law, Ova Harrison. He
is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Alley, son, Chris Alley and his

James R. (J.R.) Alley of Church Hill entered eternal peace on Saturday
(January 26, 2013) at his residence. He
was born on October 17, 1927 and was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and
a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Church Hill. He proudly served
his country in the Unites States Army during World War II and was stationed in
the Philippines, and was Honorably Discharged. Rev. Alley was retired from
Johnson Hilliard Sheet and metal after 35 plus years of service, many of those
years were inside Tennessee Eastman where he was the superintendent of
operations for Johnson Hilliard. Rev. Alley was ordained as a Free Will
Baptist Minister in August, 1959. Over the years he pastored several churches
in the East Tennessee area and also helped in several evangelistic revivals in
East Tennessee seeing many souls come to the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Homer K. Alley and Effie Huckaby Alley,
mother and father-in-law, Bob Derrick and Anna (Adams) Derrick, sisters;
Delphia Alley Cooper, Gladys Fern Alley, and Naomi Alley Thacker, brothers;
Robert, Kyle, Dallas, and Raymond Alley, son-in-law, Luther Kanipe. He
is survived by his wife of 60 years, Norma Derrick Alley, daughter, Deborah K.

"Tomy" Alley IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF LITTLE KATE AND TOMY ------------------ On the 19th day of Feb. 1911, the dark winged angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Alley and bore away their little daughter, aged 6 years, 5 months and 4 days. She told her little brother, Charles on Monday before she died that she wanted to be dressed in white and buried by her Uncle, T. J. Alley, deceased. And four days later the angel made its return and took little Tomy to dwell with Kate. The burial services were conducted by A. M. Templeton and E. J. Lane, and the remains were then laid to rest where little Kate had requested. How sad it was when we looked in the faces of these dear little ones and thought what tender chords had been severed. We bow in sorrow at the taking of these little ones, feeling that while the ripened fruit may be gathered, it seems cruel that the buds should be taken before·they have even opportunity·to unfold their blossom. But in nature fruits fall, and so do blossoms and buds. In the ways of kind nature this is perhaps best, and in the taking from us these little ones we will try to accept the cross and bear it, believing that the buds will yet blossom and bear fruit in the angel land where the spirits of these little ones have gone. While we are here in this dark world of sorrow, sickness and death, they are resting in peace with God. Father, mother, brothers and sisters look to Jesus, and by faith some sweet day we will meet little Kate and Tomy in that home above, where there are no more sad partings. They were too pure to dwell in this world of sin, and God called them home to wear a crown that endless ages will only make brighter. Fraysier, son, Robert Alley, daughter, Penny Alley, and brother, Ralph

Born July 20, 1913 in Scott County, Va., he was a son of the late Walker and Sally Crook Alley . He was retired from Holston Defense Corporation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Alley ; and a sister, Nora Hammond. Surviving are his brother, Herman Alley , and several nieces and nephews. Kingsport Times-News Wallace Douglas Alley Sr. July 31, 1926 - March 3, 2015 Wallace Douglas Alley, Sr. passed away peacefully at Asbury Place, Kingsport, TN on March 3, 2015 at the age of 88. He was born July 31, 1926 in Hawkins County, TN to Jesse Clyde Alley, Sr. and Grace Wallace Alley. He was the third of four children. Wallace was an entrepreneur at the early age of thirteen. Alley delivered coal to customers around his native Church Hill, with no driver’s license. At fourteen, he was awarded a contract to deliver coal to schools in the eastern part of Hawkins County, still with no driver’s license. At age fifteen, Alley heard that a school bus route through Goshen Valley was in need of a driver, so he bought a used bus and ran the route himself, with the benefit of a valid license. He expanded into the northern part of the county the following year, buying a second bus and hiring a classmate to run that route. With World War II in full swing, the county closed a nearby school and approached him about transporting those students elsewhere. His business flourished throughout his high school years. So began the journey that eventually led to the establishment of several successful businesses. Upon graduation from Church Hill High School, Wallace entered the U.S. Navy, and served from 1944-1946. After being discharged from the U.S. Navy as the war ended, Alley immediately entered Vanderbilt University earning a business degree in nine quarters, graduating in 1948. Alley opened his first automobile dealership in 1949 as Alley Motor Company in Church Hill. He sold Plymouth and DeSoto automobiles and Massey-Harris farm equipment. At age 23, Alley was the youngest person ever granted a Chrysler franchise. In 1950, Alley added a GMC truck franchise. Business grew and in 1960 he opened a dealership in Kingsport—Alley’s Chrysler-Plymouth. Eighteen years later, he established Alley’s Dodge-Jaguar-Saab. He especially enjoyed that all three sons joined him in the auto business. Alley retired in 2011 upon the sale of the dealership. Wallace was a member of Mafair United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and in many capacities over the years. Wallace Alley has been “giving back” to the community throughout his life. He was an over thirty year member and past-president of the Kingsport Civitan Club; a member of the Board of Trustees of Emory and Henry College; former president of the Greater Kingsport Chamber of Commerce and a life-time member; former vice-chairman of the Chamber Foundation. He served on the Kingsport Industrial Development Board as chairman from 1986-1990. He was a former director of Holston Valley Hospital, Holston Mental Health Center, ETSU/UT University Center Foundation and Advisory Board and the ETSU Foundation. In 1958, Wallace was instrumental in the incorporation of Church Hill and became its first City Manager. In 1975 he was a founder and first Chairman of the Board of United Security Bank in Mt. Carmel, TN, which was later sold to Tri-City Bank, where he served on the Board of Directors for several years. Wallace has been a member of the Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America for over forty-five years, serving in many positions from Scoutmaster to Council President, Council Executive Board Member. He is a former President of the Area 6, Southern Region, National Boy Scouts of America. He has received many awards for his contributions to Scouting, including the Pioneer, Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Distinguished Silver Eagle Awards. Alley’s awards for civic and business achievement include the Andrew Jackson award in 1994 by the Tennessee Automotive Association, Chrysler Five Star Award of Excellence over twenty consecutive times. Alley was one of ten finalists out of more than 20,000 dealers nationwide for the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1995. Alley was appointed by the governor in 1992 to the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission serving two terms. Additionally, he was included in the Junior Achievement Business Leader’s Hall of Fame. In addition to his parents, Wallace was preceded in death by his first wife, Billie A. Alley in 1987; sister, Geraldine Alley Meyung; brother, Dr. J. Clyde Alley, Jr. and wife Delores; daughter-in-law, Lisa Christian Alley. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Virginia Fox Alley\, Kingsport; three sons, Wallace D. She worked at Borden Mills and J C Penney before leaving to care for and raise her family. Mrs. Alvis was devoted to God, her church, and family. retired from Holston Defense after 23 years of service and was a member

Dobyns Men's Bible class. He
was a World War I veteran, a member of Hammond Post 3 of the American

was preceded in death by his first wife, Bess Ballard Archer; a

— Dorothy Padgett Archer, born Dec. 10, 1916, of Kingsport, went to be

in Johnson City, she resided most of her life in Kingsport. She was
retired from J.P. Stevens, volunteered for the Holston Valley Medical
Center Women’s Auxiliary, and was a devoted, active member of First
Broad Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Archer was also a member of
the Liberty Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the
Dixie Book Club, and she enjoyed reading and extensive travel. She
was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Lena Lane; husbands,
Baxter L. Padgett and Carl P. Archer; three brothers; four sisters; one

Elizabeth (Bess) Archer, 2229 Pendragon Rd., wife of Carl P. Archer,
died Sunday morning [3/19/1972] following a long illness in Wilcox Hall. A
native of Dayton, Tenn., she graduated from East Tennessee State
University with a B.S. Degree in [1924?] and did graduate work at the
University of Tennessee in Home Economics. Mrs.
Archer taught for several years in the Dayton City School System and
later in the Hawkins and Sullivan County School Systems retiring in 1965

Elizabeth Arnold July 6, 1926 - December 14, 2014 Zella
Elizabeth Arnold was born in Gate City Va. on July 6, 1926 to the late
Henry Clay and Ruth Arnold. She passed away suddenly at Holston Valley
Medical Center on December 14, 2014 Zella
was stricken with polio at the age of 12 and had been without the use of
her legs for 76 years. Zella unfortunately, had to bear the prejudice
and isolation that society dictated for children during that time, but
she had a loving extended family which helped her cope. It did however;
give her opportunities to see other regions outside of her small
community in Gate City. She received treatment and studied in Warm
Springs, GA and in Richmond, VA at facilities for crippled children.
Sadly, these were the only bittersweet trips she would take in her life,
but she always requested postcards from friends and family from distant
exotic destinations around the world. Zella
was a voracious reader and loved a challenging crossword puzzle that
helped to increase her vocabulary. Well above what was used for the
region. She never let her handicap hinder her, and was always fiercely
independent and extremely intelligent. Zella was always friendly to
everyone, as long they were to her; however, she was not a shrinking
violet when it came to taking up for herself, or for anyone else that
she thought had been wronged unfairly. She
was one of the first people in Gate City to initiate a proposal to add
ramps to sidewalks at a time when handicapped accessible areas were not
the law. She became a fixture around Gate City driving her “Rascal”
scooter; finally enjoying some freedom in her life on her own. She
was a devoted daughter who lived with her mother until her death at the
age of 100. She did not have children of her own, but she helped raise
many in the family with an intelligence and wit that was unique to her.
She never thought of herself, and her entire live was devoted to helping
her family and friends. At the end she gave the ultimate, altruistic
gift of donating her body to science at the University of Tennessee. A
final selfless act to the betterment of mankind. Zella
was preceded in death by a sister Nancy and a brother Bruce. She
is survived by her brother H.C. Arnold Jr. of Fall Branch, TN; her
sister Juanita Leask and her husband David of Sun City, AZ.; her nephew
Clay Arnold and his wife Jaime of Fall Branch, TN, and Greg Lane who was
a son to her. There are many other family members and friends that will
miss her dearly. Memorial
services will be held at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, VA on
Sunday December 21, 2014 from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers,
donations to the Scott County Animal Shelter in her name would be a very

Dorothy was a wonderful mom and wife but still found time to be a career woman being an Avon Representative for many, many, many years. Her job brought her much fulfillment and she truly loved it, selling her last Avon order near her 90th birthday. Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rosa Arnold; his twin sister, Rosa Brown; sister, Velva Shoemaker Smith; brothers, Clay and Ireland Arnold; great-great-grandson, Ronnie Kelly Pierson. Mr. Arnold was born in Clinchport, Va., on June 22, 1915. He married the beautiful Lissie Rivers (Bartlett) on Nov. 14, 1936 in Gate City, Va. After retiring from the Tennessee Eastman Company in 1979, he spent much of his time buying and selling cattle. Fishing and trapping were two of his great loves and he did both as often as he could. He was a devoted customer of McGee's Restaurant for well over 50 years, eating breakfast there nearly everyday until he was no longer able. Even then he had it brought to him. Arnold, 73, of the Yuma community, went to be with the Lord (July 10, 2014) at
his home. He
retired from General Motors in the Truck/ Bus division after several years of
service. Wayne loved to play Rook; and go hunting and fishing. He
was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lissie Arnold He
is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Phyllis Darnell Arnold; daughter,

Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Signature Health Care (Rogersville, TN). Mrs.
Arnold was born February 12, 1943, in the Mabe community of Scott County,
Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Dillard Kern and Lillian Flanery Kern
Mullins. During
her lifetime, Mrs. Arnold worked several different jobs, including work in the
factory and manufacturing sector and as a homemaker. Mrs.
Arnold was a faithful Christian and was a member of Durhams Chapel Church
(Duffield, VA). She
is preceded in death by her father, Dillard Kern; her mother and stepfather,
Lillian Mullins and James “Slick” Mullins; her husband, Glen L. Arnold
(2010); grandparents, George and Lillie Pruitt Kern, and Luther “Blackie”
and Venus Stone Flanery; and an infant brother, Ray Kern. Survivors

CITY, Oct. 31 — Joint funeral services were held today at Blair's
Chapel near here for Mrs. Helen Taylor, 77, and her granddaughter, Mrs.
Daisy Ashburn, 28, both of whom died within 16 hours of each other
Saturday and Sunday mornings. Mrs.
Ashburn died suddenly of heart failure Saturday morning [10/29/1932] at
the home of W. E. Taylor, Sr., where she had come from her home in
Norfolk to visit her ill grandmother, Mrs. Taylor. Mrs.
Taylor had been ill about four weeks prior to her death about 1:00 p.m.
Sunday [10/30/1932] morning. She
was a member of a pioneer family in Scott county where she had lived her
entire life constantly taking an interest in the welfare of her
neighbors, church and community. When
stricken with a fatal heart attack, Mrs. Ashburn was talking to the
physician attending her grandmother.
She was a native of Scott county, but had made her home in
Washington, D. C., and Norfolk, Va., for the past 11 years.
She, as her grandmother, was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving
Mrs. Ashburn are her husband, Overton Ashburn, at present located in
Hagerstown, Md.; one daughter, Janice; her father, J. B. McClellan, Gate
City; three sisters, Mrs. R. O. Williams, Roda. Va., Mrs. E. B.
Williams, Hill, Va., Mrs. Charles Rogan, Kingsport, Tenn., and one
brother, Warner B. McClellan, Gate City.
Her mother died several years ago. Surviving
Mrs. Taylor are her husband, W. E. Taylor, Sr., Gate City; one sister,
Mrs. Liddie Salling, Slant, Va., and the following children, Thomas N.
Taylor, Kingsport; C. D. and J. C. Taylor, Wheelerton, Tenn,; W. E.
Taylor, Jr., Gate City and J. E. Taylor, Fort Blackmore, Va. A
huge number of friends thronged the Blair's Chapel church and yard
during funeral services conducted by Rev. Joshua Lane, assisted by Rev.
John Vermillion. Burial
rites were held at the Taylor Cemetery near the church. [The
Taylor Cemetery named as burial place is apparently the same as
present-day Penley Cemetery, S Gate City #36.] Kingsport

Georgia (Jones) Austin GATE CITY — Georgia Jones Austin, 90,
entered into rest Sunday (March 23, 2008) at the Brian Center Health and
Rehabilitation, Weber City, Va. She was born in Scott County, Va., July 23,
1917. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Rufus Sidney Jones and Nan Quillen Jones; her husband, Elmer Lee Austin;
half-sister, Dorothy Quillen and half-brothers, Fred Quillen and J.L.
Quillen. Survivors include her daughter, Polly Hammond,
Clinchport, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and Ruth Austin, Gate
City, Va., Bobby and Patsy Austin, Duffield, Va., Vextal Austin, Gate
City, Va.; half-sisters, Margaret Hunley and Ruth France, both of Gate

by Don Lane Lelyia (Gilreath) Austin GATE CITY, Va. - Lelyia Gilreath Austin, 92 of Gate City, Va., passed away, with her loving family by her side, on Saturday, (April 21, 2007), at her home, following several months of declining health. She was born in Scott County Va. to the late Hiram and Arminda McDavid Gilreath. Lelyia lived her entire life as a wonderful role model and inspiration to those who knew her. She was always there with her nine children and instilled caring, giving and integrity to her children. Her family was always first and foremost in her life and she was always there for her "babies" as they were with her when God took her home on Saturday. She was a wonderful, fun-loving, hard-working, generous and caring person. She loved to work in her flowers and yard and sew and make quilts before her eyesight failed rapidly some years ago. The family would like to thank her wonderful neighbors for being so kind to her and for always being there if she needed them. She loved everyone and strived always to lead by her example of being good to everyone. Lelyia was a member of Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in East Carters Valley. She had been a Sunday school teacher and class secretary in her younger years at the church. Her entire Gilreath family attended the church for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Benton Austin; two children Kathleen Austin and Howard Keener Austin; four grandchildren Jeffrey Austin, Joseph Austin, Angela Austin and Teresa Lyall Betley; nine brothers and sisters. – L. Bruce Austin, 80 of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on
Friday, July 18, 2014 with his loving wife, Peggy by his side. Born in
Scott County, Virginia, he had lived in Kingsport for most of his life.
He was a 1953 graduate of Shoemaker High school and a veteran of the
U.S. Army serving in the Paratrooper Division achieving the rank of
Specialist 3rd Class. Bruce was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company
following 43 years of service where he worked as an Engineering
Technologist. He was past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee
F&AM. He was past Master of Kingsport Lodge # 688 and was currently
serving as treasurer a position he had held for 25 years. He also was
very active with Kingsport Commandry. Mr. Austin was a member of
Morrison City Christian Church. He
was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Dawn Austin; his son,
Jeffery Bruce Austin; parents, Ben and Lelyia Gilreath Austin; sister,
Kathleen Austin; brother, Howard Keener Austin. Bruce
is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Edwards Austin of Kingsport;
sisters, Ruby Ann Hayes, Barbara Anderson and husband, C.H. and Elaine
