Amanda Etta "Manda" (Williams) Qualls

SAUK VILLAGE, Ill. - Bruce Qualls, 73, a 45-year resident of Sauk Village, passed away Saturday (Jan. 17, 2004).

Bruce was a service manager for Eastman Kodak Co. for 32 years and a member of the Eastman Kodak 25 Year Club. After retiring from Eastman, he was a service representative for Nutmeg Utility in Cheshire, Conn., and also a former member of Sauk Village Zoning Board.

Mr. Qualls served his country bravely in the U.S. Army; a Korean War veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Eula (Rhoten) Qualls.

He was the devoted husband of Helen (Livesay) Qualls; beloved father of Jackie (David) Rotondi of Homewood and Jill (Mark) Wrabel of San Francisco; brother of Carl Qualls Sr. of Kingsport; proud grandfather of Ashley and Gina Rotondi; and uncle of Carl (Mary) Qualls Jr., Clinchport, Va.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bob Cloud officiating. Isaac Bledsoe will provide the music.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Gate City Post No. 265 will be in charge of the graveside service.

KINGSPORT - Clyde C. Qualls, 90, formerly of Clinchport, Va., died Thursday morning (Jan. 11, 2001) at Wexford House.

Born in Scott County, Va. on Oct. 26, 1910, he was the son of the late Issac Qualls and Mamie Darnell Qualls. He was a World War II Navy veteran and worked in construction for Cassell Brothers. Mr. Qualls was a charter member of Clinchport Freewill Baptist Church serving as deacon for over 25 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Margaret Qualls, Dorcas Robinette, Mimie Belle Osborne and Beatrice Qualls; four brothers, Edgar, Raleigh, Millard and Harold Qualls.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Gibson Qualls, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Mamie and Dennis Gardner, Kingsport; grandson, John T. Gardner and wife Melissa; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and anytime at his residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Roger Herron officiating.

Music will be provided by Billy Gibson.

Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery with rites conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post 3382.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Robinette, Ralph Qualls, Bob Danner, Roy Roberts, Odis Qualls, Lester Davis.

Deacons of the church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

KINGSPORT — Enoch Radford Qualls, 78, entered into rest Friday ( April 11, 2008 ) to be with his loving Father.

He was born in Scott County , Va. March 14, 1930 to the late Absolom Benjamin Qualls and Flara Belle Bishop Qualls.

Mr. Qualls graduated from Rye Cove High School in 1950. After graduating, he went into the U.S. Army and was in the 101st Airborne Division, Camp Bracken Ridge , Ky. , then became a football coach with Rye Cove High School .

He worked at the Kingsport Press and was an avid farmer. He was the owner and operator of the 4-A Bait Shop, which was the number of his grandchildren whose names all started with the letter A.

He was a loving son, brother, and papaw to his special grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved and adored.

He was a member of the Messengers Sunday School class where he attended church at the First Assembly of God. He loved to study the Bible and enjoyed having revivals and singing in Clinchport, Va.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Beada E. Lane, Blanche E. Davidson and Irene B. Williams; an infant brother, Eugene Oscar Qualls; half sisters, Maude Pardue and Elizabeth Dishner; half brothers, E.D. Qualls, Jesse Qualls and Bill Qualls.

Survivors include his brother, Ralph and wife, Patsy Qualls, Clinchport, Va.; sister, Jamie Mildred Qualls and husband, John, Clinchport, Va.; grandchildren, Angela Ann Hinkle and fiance, Ricky Hutson, Ashley Lynn Hinkle Honaker and husband, Chaz, Amber Nicole Hinkle and Austin Terry Hinkle; great-grandchildren, Tyler Gage Doran, Tanner Leland Hutson and Cadance Brooke Honaker; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley officiating.

Music will be provided by The Browders.

Military graveside services will be held at the VA Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. with the American Legion Hammond Post of Kingsport Tenn. #3 and Gate City Post #265 and the Va. Army National Honor Guard. The family will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Bowen, Tim Bowen, John Qualls, Ricky Hutson, Terry Hinkle and Austin Hinkle.

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Isaac Qualls, retired farmer at Clinchport, died Monday evening [ 6/21/1965 ] at Holston Valley Community Hospital . He was 88.

He is survived by three daughters, Miss Margaret Qualls, and Mrs. R. G. (Ronald) Robinette, both of Clinchport; Mrs. C. F. Osborn of Blackwater, Va.; four sons. Edgar, of Yakama, Wash.; Millard and Clyde of Clinchport; and Raleigh, of Sweet Home, Okla. ; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Johnny Keith Davis.

GATE CITY -- J. J. Qualls, 74, of Route 1, Daniel Boone Community, died Thursday after a long illness.  He was a member of the Gravely Hill Baptist Church , a veteran of World War I, and had operated the Qualls' service station and grocery store.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Zella Mae Qualls; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Lane, Kingsport; a son, Rev. KINGSPORT — Mary Ellen Huffman Qualls, 91, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Monday (May 4, 2009) at her residence.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and was a charter member of Charity Chapel Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley Hendricks; son, Sylvester John Qualls; infant son, Noah; parents, William and Fannie Bell Caywood Huffman; sister, Ruth; brothers, Tom Huffman, Jim Huffman, J. B. Huffman, Joe Huffman.

Mary is survived by her husband, William H. Qualls, of the home; two daughters, Edna S. Whitehurst and husband, Wayne of Knoxville and Sharon R. Read of Kingsport; two sons, Charles W. GATE CITY , Va. - Oscar (Bill) Qualls died Sunday ( July 12, 1992 ) at Indian Path Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was a veteran-of World War I and self·employed.

He attended the First Baptist Church of Weber City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A.P. and Emma Clayton Qualls, and his stepmother, Flora Bishop Qualls.

CHURCH HILL  -  Mrs J. J. (Zella Mae Smith) Qualls, 80, Route 3, Church Hill, died Friday (Oct. 2, 1987) at the residence of her daughter, Edith Webb, with whom she had resided for about a year.

    Formerly of the Daniel Boone community of Scott County , she was a Baptist.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Matilda Smith; two sisters, Venus Lane and Bessie Bloomer; a brother, Bascom Smith; her husband, J. J. Qualls; a son, Rev. Gene Qualls.

    Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Edith) Webb, Church Hill; a granddaughter and one great-granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. Edna Hood, Clinchport, Va.; two brothers, M. D. Smith and W. B. Smith Jr., both of Clinchport, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Gate City – Betty Rhoton Quate, 85 of Gate City, passed away Friday March 14, 2014 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Quate was born in Scott County, VA on March 5, 1929, to the late Arthur Rhoton and Emma Rhoton Kern. She was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion R. “Pete” Quate; her son, Artie Quate and her sister, Helen Rhoton Ford.

Mrs. Quate is survived by her niece, Sally E. “Betsy” France; granddaughter, Jeanne France and her daughters, Ali France and Toni France; grandson, Michael France and wife Angela, daughter and son, Autumn France and Levi France.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, VA. Friends may also call anytime at the residence.

KINGSPORT - Harlan Bentson (Ben) Queen , 64, 309 E. Carters Valley Road, died at 5 p.m. Friday (June 18, 1999) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Sullivan County, he was a four year veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He was retired from A.F.G. and attended Victory Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Joseph Queen ; and grandparents, Harlan and Lettie Queen and Bentson and Hariett Cook.

TROY, OH - Adam F. Quillen, 82, of Troy, passed away at 4:11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Heartland of Piqua.

He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Load, Ky., to the late Charley W. Quillen Sr. and Ida Mae (Hannah) Quillen.

His wife of 62 years, Mona Joyce (Curry) Quillen, survives.

Other survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Patricia Quillen and Ronald K. Quillen Sr., all of Troy and Adam W. and Carole Quillen of Logan; brothers and sisters, Eva May Hixson of Cadillac, Mich., Judy Sprinkle of Troy, LeRoy Quillen of Miamisburg, Gerald Quillen of Sidney, Michael Quillen of Indiana and Jill Quillen of Sidney; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Adam was preceded in death by one son, John W. Quillen Sr.; and brothers, William T. Quillen and Charlie W. Quillen Jr.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of First Baptist Church, Troy, American Legion Post No. 43 and VFW Post No. 5436, Troy.

Adam retired from the Frigidaire Division of the General Motors Co. after 37 years of service.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. Dale R. Christian officiating.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at the Quillen Family Cemetery, Greenup, Ky.

Albert Tilmon Quillen, 74, Route 10, Mountain View Road, Easley Estates, Kingsport, died Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 12, 1988) at his residence of an apparent heart attack.

Born in Hawkins County, he had lived in Kingsport since 1942 and retired in 1975 from the Explosives Maintenance Division of Holston Defense Corp.  He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Lawson Quillen; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Harrison, Kingsport and Mrs. Al (Lucretia) Fletcher, Church Hill; three sons. James H. He was a former resident of Kingsport, and the father of Mrs. Ruth Bridges.  He was born and spent his early life in Scott County, Va.  He made his home in Florida the past six years.  He was a member of the Vermont Methodist Church.

Survivors include: his widow, Mrs. Lola Meyers Quillen, and a daughter, Mrs. Nora Muller, both of Florida, and Mrs. Bridges, of Kingsport; two sons, Archie and Sam, both of Kingsport; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Kilgore, Blountville, and Mrs. Venia Lane of Kingsport; also nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The body will be returned to the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home.  Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

KINGSPORT — Avery E. Quillen, 80, went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with Parkinson disease [ 7/17/2009 ].

She was born on Sept. 30, 1928 in Bath County , Va. to the late James Marion Bishop and Sally Lane Bishop. She attended Gravely Baptist Church , Kingsport . She was a cashier at Thriftway Market for 13 years. Avery was a devoted Mother, she loved to cook and give to others. She enjoyed flowers and growing them. Her family was very important to her.

Preceding her in death, other than her parents, are her husband, Clifford Ray Quillen; sisters, Margaret Donaldson, Ora Mae Bishop and Sue Christian; brother, Phil Bishop.

Alvin William Quillen, 67, Bloomingdale Pike, died Sunday morning (Dec. 6, 1998) at his residence.

A native of Scott County, Va., he was a retired sales manager for B.F. Goodrich. He was a member of Bloomingdale Ruritan Club.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen R. Anderson Quillen; his parents, Warner P. and Alice Compton Quillen; sister, Eulala Quillen Gillenwater; and brothers, Utah Quillen, Pridemore Quillen and E.B. Quillen.

SLANT, Va. -- Mrs. O. A. Qulllen, 57, died at Holston Valley Community Hospital at 5 a.m. Tuesday [2/4/1958] after an illness of three weeks.

She was the daughter of the late Ira and Flora Smith Flanary.

Survivors include her widower, O. A. Quillen; one daughter, Mrs. Tom R. St. Martin of Kingsport; one son, O. A. Quillen Jr. of Slant; one sister, Mrs. Otto Boatright of Fort Blackmore; one brother, Sherill Flanary of Gate City; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will bc conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Carters Chapel on Stoney Creek.  The Rev. Jim Boatwright will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Carter Cemetery.

Gate City, VA. -- Alvon “AO” Quillen, 69, went to be with the Lord November 17th at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a faithful charter member of Crossway Baptist Church in Gate City.

Alvon was preceded in death by his father, Alvon O. Quillen Sr.

Alvon is survived by Janet, his loving wife of 50 years, as well as his daughter Alethea Newsome and husband Lane. BRISTOL, Va. — Benny Harold Quillen, 67, of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord Monday (June 2, 2008) at Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 7, 1940 in Kingsport and was the son of the late John and Ollie Mae McClure Quillen. He had lived in the Bristol area most of his life and was retired from Mayfield Dairy. He attended Keystone Freewill Baptist Church in Johnson City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Quillen.

Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Carter and husband, David; son, Brian Quillen; grandchildren, Ashley Overstreet and husband, Jason, Amanda Quillen and Chris Jones; sisters, Juanita Light, Faye Collins, Sue Stokes and Ann Fields; brothers, Orbin Quillen and Jack Quillen; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Charlotte Sealock and Sandy and David Carter.

He was born in Hawkins County, Tenn. and had lived in this area most of his life before moving to Columbus 20 years ago. He was employed in the construction business.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Carl Robert Quillen, 81, died Friday (Dee. 20, 1991) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, Va., he had retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after 30 years service. He was a member of Ketron Memorial Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walker P. Quillen in 1960 and Ida Davidson Quillen in 1964 ,and also by one brother, Walker Quillen and one sister, Edna Jones.

MANVILLE, Va. - Charles Henry Quillen was born Aug. 14, 1943 at home and went to be with the Lord suddenly Monday afternoon (Dec. 22, 2003) at the same place he was born while doing the things he enjoyed, after a brief history of heart disease.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. He served during the Vietnam War, 1965-1967, in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1999 from the Tennessee Eastman Company after 321/2 years of service. He belonged to "Wheels of Faith" motorcycle club and loved to ride his Harley.

Charles enjoyed going to church and worshiping the Lord. He was a faithful member of the house of the Lord. He had a prison ministry, along with his son, at Camp 18 in Coeburn, Va.

He loved to hunt and "tinker" on his farm with his tractor and his dogs. Charles was a people person, he loved people and always had a smile - Charles loved life. He will be sadly missed in the community for all he did for others.

Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Freddie Quillen, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher A. and Rhonda Quillen of Gate City, Va.; sisters, Betty Gibson and Pauline Neeley, both of Gate City, Va.; brother, Johnny R. Quillen and wife Joyce of Duffield, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 145 Shipp Springs Rd., Kingsport, and anytime at the residence of his son, Christopher Quillen on Hilton Road.

May 5, 1947 - July 21, 2014

Christine Miller Quillen, 67, of Kingsport, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 following a brief illness.

She was born on May 5, 1947 to Norma Miller and the late Grant Miller. Christine was a 1965 graduate of Lynn View High School. She was a worship director, choir director, and pianist/organist at Morrison City Christian Church. She retired in 2009 after 25 years of service with Emmanuel School of Religion and was an administrative assistant to the librarian.

Christine is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Gary; son, Timothy Quillen and his wife Donna of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Julia Oxendine and her husband Winston of Johnson City, TN; her mother, Norma Miller of Johnson City, TN; grandsons, Gabriel and Lukas Oxendine of Johnson City, TN and William Quillen of Greensboro, NC; sister, Margaret (Marty) Sutherland and her husband Larry of Myrtle Beach, SC; nieces, Diana Fisher and her husband Dave of Knoxville, TN and Kelly Cassell of Kingsport, TN; nephew, Mike Quillen and his wife Jill of Troutville, VA; and several great-nephews and a great niece.

Mr. Clarence A. Quillen of Mansfield, formerly of Shreveport and Fisher, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998 in Mansfield.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 17 at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent Avenue. Dr. Scott Tatum, (ret) former pastor of Broadmoor Baptist Church, officiated.

Mr. Quillen was born in Tyrone, Mo., Dec. 29, 1899. He was a W. W. I. Veteran, having served in France during the war. He moved to Fisher in 1921 and was employed by LA. LONGLEAF LBR CO for 46 years. He retired in 1967 as General Manager and member of the Board of Directors and moved to Shreveport in April of that year. He was also a member of Fisher Baptist Church, where he was a choir director, Men's Sunday School Class teacher and church treasurer. Upon moving to Shreveport, he became active in the Broadmoor Baptist Church and became teacher of the men's Progressive Class.

Ill health forced him and his wife to move to Mansfield Nursing Center in March 1997.

Survivors include two daughter, Mrs. Jane Rougeau and son-in-law, Dr. James Rougeau of Mansfield and Mrs. Nancy McDonald of Baton Rouge; three grandchildren, Robert McDonald, Elizabeth Coe and Gregory Rougeau; two great-grandchildren, T. J. and Claire Burke; two nieces, Daphne Davis of Springfield, Mo. and Kathleen Jennings of Mariposa, Calif. Mr. Quillen was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Y. Quillen (5-8-97); two brothers, Rufus and Rob Quillen; and one sister, Maxine Bosley.

(June 14, 1993) at her residence after a brief illness.

She was born in the Midway community of Scott County, Va. She was a nursing assistant and was a member Bishop Memorial
Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald W. Quillin; her parents, John Oscar and Etta Stallard Kendrick; two brothers, Oscar Elmer Kendrick and Earl Clifford Kendrick; three sisters, Ida Hensley, Mildred Kendrick, and Nannie Marie Kendrick Simmons.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Cora M. Quillen, 97, died Sunday (Dec. 10, 1995) at Ridgecrest Manor.

Born in the Midway community of Scott County, Va., she lived most of her life in Gate City, Va. She was an active member of the Gate City United Methodist Church and was one of the founders of Midway Memorial Methodist Church. She was a former employee of the Scott County School System and was active in P.T.A. for 33 years, serving as an officer several times.

She was a homemaker and retired from P.H. Nickels Department Store in Gate City, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart M. Quillen Sr.; two sons, Fred Quillen and Jack L. 'Little Jeep' Quillen; two grandsons; her parents, James and Minta Vermillion; one brother, Otis Vermillion; three sisters, Myrtle Gregg, Monnie McClellan and Audrey Kelly.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. John W. (Mary Katherine) Williams, Claxton, lnd., Mrs. L. Ray (Betty Jo) Wilhelm, Kingsport, Mrs. Robert R. KINGSPORT  Darryl Ewing “Big Daddy” Quillen, 67, of Kingsport, went to be with his Father in heaven on Friday morning (March 13, 2009).
He served in the U. S. Army and retired from Tennessee Eastman Company. Darryl was a loving husband, father, papaw, son, brother, and friend to all who knew him. His hobbies included fishing, coaching Little League, and working on street rods.
Darryl was a member of Morrison City Christian Church.
His father, Ferris Quillen, preceded him in death in 2002.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Rae Smith Quillen of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Dave Fisher of Toney, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jill Quillen of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Hannah, Daniel and Matthew Quillen, and Zachary Fisher; his mother, Eva Quillen of Kingsport; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Christine Quillen of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides the parents be leaves sisters, Brenda, Kathy, Sharon and Melinda of the home; 3 brothers, Ronald and Donald, and one twin brother Dwight of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Quillin, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mont Hillman, maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hillman, all of Dungannon.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel with Elder Echol Herron in charge.  Burial will be at Holston View Cemetery.  The body was removed to the home Tuesday afternoon from Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home.

Delilah “Dee” Benson Quillen, 79, of the Manville Community, passed away Saturday January 26, 2013 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, she has lived in Southwest Virginia most of her life. She worked at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle Benson and Lydia Ann Benson and step mother, Olive Benson; two brothers, William and Lyle Benson and a half-brother, Henry Tomes

KINGSPORT — Eileen Quillen , 85, of Kingsport , is now singing in the Heavenly choir as of Thursday ( Aug. 13, 2009 ) at 10:30 a.m.

Eileen was born on Sept. 23, 1923 in Maces Springs , Va. She was the third of 15 children, born to the late Clint and Ocie Clark Shaffer. Mrs. Quillen made singing a big part of her life. In her earlier years, she sang along with her brothers on WOPI Radio Station in Bristol , Va. She also sang on many religious broadcasts on WGAT-Gate City and WMCH-Church Hill. Eileen was a charter member of Lewis Lane Central Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir. She sang with several groups through the years. Eileen had a true love for flower gardens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Quillen in 2006; an infant daughter, Danna Darlene Quillen ; her brothers, Willard, Wilmer, Fred, Eugene, Harold, Garnett and an infant brother, Cecil Shaffer.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Eileen Quillen is survived by her daughters, Patricia Quillen , Regina Dye and husband, Ron, Debbie Calhoun and husband, Dwight (Steve), (all of Kingsport); her grandchildren, Chris Napier, Julie Christian and husband, Sean, April Dye and husband, Justin and Amy Dye; two great-grandchildren, Kali Phillips and Airman First Class Christopher Napier, Jr. (Lakinheath Air Force Base in London, England); her brothers, T.J. HILTONS, Va. - Eugene L. Quillen, 89, died in Bristol Memorial Hospital at 4 p.m. Monday [ 4/28/1975 ] following a short illness.

He had made his home for the past several months with a sister at Duffield , Va.

MORRISON CITY -- Eugene W. Quillen, 24, of 609 Bellridge Road, Morrison City, was found dead at his home Tuesday [2/7/1967].

Quillen was born in Scott County, Va., and had lived in Kingsport for the past 10 years.  He was a graduate of Lynn View High School and was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

He was employed as a salesman for the Jewel Box of Kingsport for the past six years.

Survivors include, besides his widow, Mrs. Virginia S. Quillen, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walker P. Quillen of Kingsport; three sisters, Mrs. George Bailey of Kingsport, Mrs. Virginia Adams of Detroit, Mich., and Miss Peggy Ann Quillen of Kingsport; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Strong of Gate City, Va.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at State Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Gonzales and Rev. Hobert Reneau officiating.  Burial will follow in the Holston View Cemetery.

She was born in Scott County, Va., on Feb. 23, 1919. She was a homemaker and a member of Blairs Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Monroe Blair and Ora Pack Blair; husband, Charlie C. Quillen; son, J.B. Quillen, Sr; grandson, J.B. Quillen, Jr.; sisters, Thelma Mann, Carie Quillen, Verda Tipton, Sudie Mann and Annie Musick; brothers, Lee Blair, Clarence Blair, Junior Blair and Ray Blair.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Evelyn June Quillen, 84, the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Vernon Wood Quillen, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) after a lengthy illness.

She graduated from Nickelsville High School in 1932, studied piano at Virginia Intermont College and graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1937.

She taught school for 16 years in Wise and Scott counties, was employed with Selective Services from 1942 to 1948 in Kingsport. Due to the illness of her parents, she returned to Nickelsville in 1948.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was the pianist and organist for 48 years, was the young people's Sunday School teacher for many years and also taught private piano for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Wood Quillen, M.D. (1965) and Lillian Catherine Carty Quillen (1953); sister, Frances Uneva Quillen King (Mrs. J. Ralph King) in (1980); brother, Vernon Waldo Quillen (1974).

FALL BRANCH - Ezekiel H. Quillen, 90, of Fall Branch, died at his home at 8 a.m. today [10/13/1960], after a lingering illness.

He was a retired farmer, and was born and reared in Scott County, Va. He had made his home in the Fall Branch area for the past 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Bellamy Quillen; five sons, Homer Quillen, of California, Otis, Kingsport; Howard and Corbet of Fall Branch, and Everett Lee of Chuckey; two daughters, Mrs. Leota Morrison, Fall Branch, and Mrs. Opal Archer of Chuckey; two brothers, Hop, of Gate City, and Warren [sic, Warner], Ft. Blackmore, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Liza Brickey and Mrs. Annie Brickey, both of Kingsport.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

The body is at the Fall Branch Funeral Home.

GATE CITY -- Ezra Conrad Quillen, 73, Route 2, Gate City, died at Holston Valley Community Hospital at 6 a.m. today [6/19/1970] following a brief illness.

He was a life-long resident of Scott County and a member of Manville Holiness Church and a retiree of Tennessee Eastman Co.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Veldie McDavid, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Neeley and Mrs. Betty Gibson, both of Gate City, two sisters, Mrs. Edith McConnell, and Mrs. Ruth Jennings, both of Gate City; two brothers, Hobert and Hoyt, both of Gate City; 31 grandchildren; five great-­grandchildren.

The arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gate City Funeral Home.

HILTONS, Va. -- Ezra D. Quillen, 90, Route 1, died Monday afternoon ( Sept. 24, 1990 ) at Meadowbrook Manor.

A native of Scott County , he was retired from the Mead Corp. with over 40 years of service and was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Hobbs Quillen, in 1969; his parents, Auburn and Nancy Jenkins Quillen; one son, James "Buddy" Quillen; and one grandson, Tony Scott Quillen.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. G. B. (Venus) Blankenbeckler and Mrs. Wayne (Ruby) Whiten, both of Hiltons, Mrs. Earl (Betty) Lawson, Rogersville; one son, Jackie Ray Quillen, Hiltons, Va. ; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City , Va. , and anytime at the homes of Venus Blankenbeckler and Ruby Whiten, both of Hiltons.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Pat Starnes, the Rev. Tommy Benton and the Rev. Buford Blankenbeckler officiating.

Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hiltons Cemetery .

Frances Nell Quillen, 69, of Kingsport passed away at 9 am on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a graduate of Church Hill High School and was employed by the Kingsport Press for 25 years. She was of the Baptist Faith.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Beulah Rose Quillen and her grandparents, W.C. and Ollie Quillen

Survivors include her two aunts, Jean Robinette of Taylorsville, NC and Polly Collins & husband, Earnest of Mt Carmel; special caregivers, Pauline Quillen and Bob Royal; along with several cousins, and a host of friends.

The family will receive fiends from 12 - 1 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport.

Graveside services will follow at 1: 30 pm in McPheeter’s Bend Community Cemetery, Church Hill, TN. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Mr. Fred J. Quillen, 88, Dungannon, VA passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Quillen was born in Scott County, VA on December 10, 1923 to the late Everson Charles and Hettie Richmond Quillen. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Mary Wanda Peters Quillen, and sisters, Violettia Quillen McClellan and Fern Quillen preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Perry Charles Quillen and wife, Gena, Dungannon, VA; grandchildren, Dustin Quillen, Lindsey Stapleton and husband, Timothy; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Sabra Collins will provide the music.

Gate City businessman Fred Rhea Quillin, former owner of Quillin Hardware, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1993 at the age of 90.

Quillin was a merchant operating in Gate City for 67 years. Quillin's father started the hardware store in 1903. He took over management of the business shortly after his college graduation.

Quillin was a 1926 graduate of Emory & Henry College majoring in English with a minor in German.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, Quillin was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gate City and a member of the Catlett Lodge No. 35 of Gate City where he received a 60 year pen for his membership in the lodge. 

When asked the difference between the "en" Quillens and the "in" Quillins, he would reply with his eyes twinkling that "the 'en' Quillens were too lazy to dot the 'i'." Both spellings of Quillin are related.

Charles T. (Tommy) Quillin, Quillin's son said his father, who retired from the hardware business nearly two years ago, frequently visited the store often, helping with customers and generally advising in business matters.

Speaking of his dad, he said, "I'm really going to miss him. There are so many wonderful memories I would hate to just pick out one to remember him by.

Quillen is survived by one daughter, Joyce Quillin McKellar, of Raleigh, N. C., one son, Tommy Quillin of Gate City, six grandchildren, and three sister, Doris McCoy, Johnson City, Verna McClure, Palm Dale, Calif., and Catherine Russell, Los Alamos, N. M.

"He was always there for us, and was greatly loved by all his in-law children and grandchildren," said McKellar.

"It is hard to realize that he isn't here. His stability and integrity will be greatly missed."

Funeral services were held Friday at the Gate City United Methodist Church. Internment followed in the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City.

A funeral service for George Dewey Quillen, 73, of 504 Locust Ave., was held at 11 a.m. today in the Memorial Chapel of McDow-Tyree Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Scott Hutton Sr. and the Rev. Robert Yates, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Quillen died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the University Hospital in Charlottesville.

He was born Oct. 20, 1898, in Scott County, a son of the late Robert S. and Martha Lane Quillen.

Mr. Quillen was vice president of Waynesboro Nurseries, Inc., and a member of Antioch United Methodist Church in Antioch.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dasie Kiser Quillen of Waynesboro; one daughter, Mrs. Frances McMurray of Windsor, N. Y., one son, Stanford E. Quillen of Waynesboro; three sisters, Mrs. Joe B. Jinnette of Waynesboro, Mrs. Clara Greer of Gate City, and Mrs. Dana Serrett of Alexandria; one brother, Rayford Quillen of La Puente, Calif.; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl M. Quillen, Edgar M. Quillen, Echol A. Quillen and Robert G. Quillen, and one sister, Mrs. Leland McConnell.

Active pallbearers were James Binns, Worthy Thompson, Edward Fisher, Edward Wilhelm, T. W. Shiflet and John Wehry Jr.

Services for Glen H. Quillin, 91, of Lufkin, [TX] were held Sunday, Aug. 22 in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. [Died Aug. 20, 2004]

Mr. Quillin was born June 24, 1913 in Hallsville to the late John Ed and Tressie (Schaffer) Quillin, and died Friday, Aug. 20 in a Lufkin retirement center. He owned and operated Quillin's Furniture Store for 34 years and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors: wife, Hazel (Cammack) Quillin; son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. FORT BLACKMORE, Va. — The Rev. Herman Carson Quillin Sr., 94, passed away March 1, 2010, at his residence.

Rev. Quillin was born May 6, 1915, in Scott County, Va., Alley Valley community, where he has lived his entire life.

He was the son of the late Everson V. and Mozella McConnell Quillin.

He attended public schools in Scott County and entered the ministry at a very young age of 17.

He completed studies at the School of Ministerial Studies , a nondenominal school in Kent , Ohio , the American Bible Institute, and received his Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Christian Theological College Inc. in New York . He was a member of American Evangelical Christian Churches , whose headquarters are based in Indianapolis , Ind.

In 1968, seeking fellowship and Christian understanding, and wishing to promote the philosophy of “No Book But The Bible, No Creed But Christ, No Law But Love, No Name But Christian,” he was founder of the Christian Brotherhood Inc. He was editor of the “Christian Brotherhood” publication until 2008.

In his 70-plus years in the ministry, he pastored and evangelized in numerous states including Virginia , Kentucky , West Virginia , Tennessee , Ohio and Arizona . He was pastor and Bible teacher at Lawson Memorial Church for 30 years, leaving there in 2007 due to his declining health. During his ministry, he officiated at 2,239 weddings.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife, Glennia Margaret Spears Quillin, the mother of his children; one infant son; a brother, Paul Lee Quillin; a grandson, Mark Stephen Quillin; daughter-in-law, Jean Quillin; son-in-law, Robert Kelly Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his late wife, Helen Gillenwater Quillin.

His survivors include daughter, Emma Rena Penrod and David, Bowling Green, Ky.; sons, Cowell Quillin and Bobbie, Kingsport, Dwight E. Hazel Ruby Still Qulllin, 76, 1233 East Center Street, died Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 4, 1993) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Hawkins County, she moved to Centralia, Kansas and lived in Kingsport since 1935.  She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and Sunday school tea­cher.  She won the 1983 Tennessee State Senior Olympics Mile Walk and was a member of several garden clubs.

Mrs. Quillin was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.

A daughter of the late James W. and Isabell Barrett Still, she was preceded in death by her hus­band, Glendon W. Quillin, five sisters, Lola Ellison, Esther Stanton, Rosa Wood, Ollie Ellis, and Isabell Henry; six brothers, Frank Still, Elmer Still, Hiram Still, J. Charles Still, Fred Still and Roy Still.

Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Quillin Nelms, Austin, Texas; one son, James F. Quillin, Johnson City; one granddaught­er; three sisters, Mrs. B. L. FORT BLACKMORE, Va. — Henry Kyle Quillen , 94, of Fort Blackmore, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday afternoon ( March 29, 2011 ), at Holston Valley Medical Center .

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County . Henry retired as a construction worker and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vestie Howington Quillen ; his parents, Warner Quillen and Lakie Harris Lane; a grandson, Eddie Dingus; along with several sisters and brothers.

Henry Quillen is survived by his daughters, Cecile Dingus (Fort Blackmore, Va.), Mable Rasnake (Kingsport); nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Dougherty (Weber City, Va.) and Kathleen Williams (Gate City, Va.); brothers, Wayne Quillen (Fort Blackmore, Va.) and Robert Lane (South Carolina); along with several nieces and nephews.

MT. CARMEL -- Hiram Christopher Quillen, 60, of 438 Bay Street, Mt. Carmel, Tenn., died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday [8/2/1986] at Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Hawkins County, Tenn., he had lived most of his life in Baltimore, Md. returning to Mt. Carmel approximately eight years ago.  He was an iron work­er and a driver for Gilliam Cab Company.  Mr. Quillen was of the Freewill Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, W. C. Quillen, in 1978, and his mother, Mrs. Ollie H. Quillen, in 1979.  Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. James (Alwanda) Carter, Church Hill, Mrs. John (Violet) Goins, Kingsport, Mrs. Carl (Jean) Robinette, Taylorsville, N.C. and Mrs. Earnest (Polly) Collins, Mt. Car­mel; two brothers, Paul Quillen, Kingsport and Doyle Quillen, Columbus, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Hobart (H.M.) McKinley Quillen , 80, went to be with the Lord Saturday (June 5, 1999) at the Indian Path Medical Center.

Hobart was born October 20, 1918 in Scott County, Va. to the late Hobart M. and Cora Vermillion Quillen . He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the silent Wings. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No 972. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Kingsport. He was retired as supervisor at the Kingsport Press after 51 years of service.

Other than his parents he was precede in death by brothers, Jack L. Quillen and Fred Quillen ; a sister, Charlotte Ann Quillen Loggans.

Drake Quillen , Roswell, Ga.; granddaughter, Mandy Kilgore; brother, Dr. Howard E. (Jeep) Quillen , Gate City; sisters, Mary Katherine Quillen Williams, Clinton, Tenn., Ellen Jane Quillen Bowen, Gate City, Linda Lou Quillen Duncan, Waukegan, Ill. and Betty Jo Quillen Wilhelm, Kingsport; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY -- Hobert McKinley Quillen, 76, died at Holston Valley Community Hospital at 8:30 p.m. Friday [7/28/1972] after a brief illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County, a Methodist, and a retiree of Tennessee Eastman Company.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cora Vermillion Quillen; daughters, Mrs. John W. (Mary Katherine) Williams, Oak Ridge; Mrs. L. R. (Betty Jo) Wilhelm, Kingsport; and Mrs. Marvin L. FALL BRANCH — Howard E. Quillen, 78, 147 Cherry Lane, Fall Branch, died 6 a.m. Sunday (April 7, 1991) at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., he had been a resident of Fall Branch for 50 years.  He was employed in the C.E. division at Tennessee Eastman Co. for 40 years retiring in 1975.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fall Branch.

He as the son of the late Ezekiel and Mary E. Bellamy Quillen.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ester Quil­len, one grandson, David A. Quillen, Dec. 1990; four brothers, Lucian, Homer, Corbett, and Otis Quillen.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Armstrong Quillen, of the home; one daughter, Betty J. Guy, Fall Branch; three sons, Willie J. Quil­len, Fall Branch, John E. Quillen, Durham, N.C. and Samuel D. Dr. Howard Eugene "Jeep'' Quillen

DRYDEN, Va. -- Howard Quillen, 80, died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1993) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Mr. Quillen was retired from farming and the Lee County school system.  He was a deacon of Dryden Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ida Quillen, Dryden; one son, Don Quillen, Dryden; two daughters, Fay Bolling, Dryden, and Marie Quillen, Bristol, Va.; four grand­children and three great-grand­children; one brother, Ray Quillen, Dryden; and three sis­ters, Eva Gulley and Fern Musick, both of Dryden, and Mary Scott, Summervllle, Ky.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Mr. Quillen was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. He was a retired foreman in the CE Division of Tennessee Eastman Company, after 37 and a half years of service. He was a member of Alleys Chapel United Methodist Church, and a charter member of Manville Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie F. and Maude Nash Quillen; two sisters, Edith McConnell, and Ruth Jennings; and three brothers, Alfred Quillen, Conard Quillen, and Hobart J. Quillen.

Surviving are his wife, Annett Ervin Quillen; one daughter Mrs. Roger (Peggy Jayne) Price, Gate City, Va.; two sons, Robert C. (Bob) Quillen, H.E. Quillen, both of Gate City, Va.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Ora Hammonds, Kingsport.

Hubert Lee Quillen , 82, 337 Blakley Drive, Rock Springs community, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday ( Jan. 13, 1999 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County , Va. , he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and resided most of his life in the Rock Springs community. Mr. Quillen was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church . He retired from Tennessee Eastman Co. after more than 25 years of service.

He was preceded in death by a son, Hubert Elmo Quillen ; three sisters, Bessie Arnold, Edith Martin and Blanche Tolliver; two brothers, Joe Clyde (Jay) Quillen and John A. Quillen .

Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Echol A. Quillen, of 753 Highland Avenue, passed away at the Waynesboro Community Hospital, Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Funeral services were held today at 10 a.m. in East Chapel of the Etter Funeral Home. Interment was in River View Cemetery with Dr. J. G. Patton in charge of the service.

KINGSPORT - Isaac Fred Quillen 80 passed away at his residence May 12, 2007 after a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 11, 1927 in Manville, Va. to Alfred Dewey and Nancy Helen McDavid Quillen. He was retired from City of Kingsport Maintenance Division and was a farmer, raising beagles and rabbits. He was a loving husband and father. Isaac was a member of Hillcrest Bible Mission.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie Quillen and Lewis McDavid; brother, J.L. Quillen; sister, Dorothy Quillen; great-grandchildren, Gracy Ann McCloud and Thomas Adams; ex-wife and mother of his children, Dora Lee Barnette.

GATE CITY, Va. -- A former Scott County sheriff, James Ezra Quillen, 89, died at Wilcox Hall in Holston Valley Community Hospital Saturday. [4/30/1977]

Quillen, a Scott County native, was sheriff from 1936 to 1940.  He retired as a plant guard, at Tennessee Eastman Co. in Oct., 1953.  He was a Baptist.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Sallie Taylor, Mrs. Naomi Salling, both of Gate City, Mrs. Ruth Watson, Mrs. Irene Armbrister, both of Kingsport, Mrs. Helen Bowen, Duffield, Mrs. Lillian Banner, Dungannon; three sons, Ike Quillen, Dungannon, Cecil Quillen, Gate City, Eugene Quillen, Kingsport; 18 grandchildren, 32  great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

James Edwin "Bimbo" Quillen

GATE CITY, Va. — James E. (Bimbo) Quillen, 57, born on Oct. 19, 1951 of Midway, Va., formerly of Church Hill, went to be with the Lord, Saturday (April 4, 2009) at Johnson City Medical Hospital after a brief illness.

James was employed by Brock Company and previously at Kingsport Press. He was the former owner of Family Video in Church Hill and Video City in Mount Carmel.

James or (Bimbo) as he was affectionately nicknamed by his Daddy as a child also loved farming cattle, camping and helping anyone whom he felt needed a helping hand. James was of the Baptist faith and we will never forget the smile that was always on his face.

He is preceded in death by his parents, E.B. and Nina Elliott Quillen; and father-in-law, Hubert Merritt.

KINGSPORT - Congressman James Henry Quillen passed away at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning (Nov. 2, 2003) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1916 in Wayland, Scott County, Va., he was one of 10 children born to John Alley and Hannah Chapman Quillen. The family moved to Kingsport in the late 1920's when he was very young where he continued his schooling and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School.

He worked in the newspaper industry prior to serving as an ensign on the USS Antietam in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Upon returning to civilian life in 1946, he entered the construction business in Kingsport where he built numerous houses. He met Cecile Cox during this time and they were married Aug. 9, 1952.

At her persuasion along with others, he entered the race for the Tennessee Legislature in 1954, and holds the record for having the longest continuous service by any Tennessee member of the U.S. House of Representatives since Statehood in 1796. He was Dean of the Tennessee delegation to Washington.

Congressman Quillen retired on Jan. 4, 1997, concluding his 34 years in the U.S. Congress, and over 40 years in public service.

He was a member First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport.

On Jan. 25, 2002, the Congressman's beloved wife of over 49 years, Cecile Cox Quillen, died of heart failure. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. They are Willie, Jack, Bob, Roy and Edd Quillen; and Mrs. Nannie Hagy and Mrs. Rubye Parker.

Survivors include two sisters, Faye Quillen of Kingsport and Mrs. Vesta Wilson of Lenoir, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins.Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of the church with the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

WEBER CITY, Va. - James (J.L.) Quillen, 75, passed away Monday (Aug. 16, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Scott County, Va., on Aug. 4, 1929, the son of the late Alfred and Nancy McDavid Quillen. He retired from Scott County School System as custodian.

Mr. Quillen was of the Baptist faith and attended Log House Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Hass Quillen in 2001; sister, Dorothy Quillen.

GATE CITY, Va. - Jerrol Edsel Quillin Sr., 83, of Route 4, passed away Monday (Dec. 15, 2003) at his residence.

Mr. Quillin was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. He was a U.S. Army staff sergeant, a World War II veteran and holder of Silver and Bronze Stars among other military honors.

Mr. Quillin was a retired machinist of the Mead Corporation and was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Nell Dixon Quillin; parents, James and Almira Magdeline Quillin; and several sisters and brothers.

He is survived by his daughter, Jan Q. Moore, Hiltons, Va.; son, Jerrol Edsel Quillin Jr., Quincy, Mass.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Porter officiating.

KINGSPORT - Ferris Quillen, 86, died Wednesday (Oct. 23, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Gate City, Va., on June 8, 1916, he had resided in Kingsport since 1939. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1981 after 40 years of service in the C.E. Division.

Mr. Quillen was a member of Morrison City Christian Church where he was a former elder and teacher of the high school and Adult Sunday School classes.

His parents, Frank and Maunie Quillin; and sister, Leora Hilton, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Eva Wagner Quillen, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darryl E. and Linda Rae Quillen and Gary W. and Chris Quillen, all of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Diana Fisher and husband Dave, Mike Quillen and wife Jill, Tim Quillen and wife Donna, and Juli Oxendine and husband Winston; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mariece Vicars, Abingdon, Va.; and several nephews.

Jessee Woodrow Quillen, 47, 1417 Warpath Dr., died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday [5/24/1969] at Holston Valley Community Hospital.

Quillen was a carpenter and attended the Baptist Church.  He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Clarke Quillen of the residence; father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Joe Clyde “Jay” Quillen, 71, 3617 Thornton Dr., Kingsport, died Monday (Jan. 31, 1994) at In­dian Path Medical Center.

A native of Sullivan County, he retired from the S&M Division of Tennessee Eastman Company. He was a member of Gardners Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Joe R. Quillen, 87, Kingsport, entered his Eternal Home on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born November 2, 1926, in Church Hill, TN, and lived most of his life in Kingsport. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was employed by Eastman for 43 years, retiring in 1986 as supervisor in the Acetic Anhydride Department. Joe was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and an active member of Bill Allen’s Sunday School Class. He was a 64 year member of the Clay Masonic Lodge No. 386 in Church Hill and a 60 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 198 in Kingsport.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, George P. and Bertha Simpson Quillen; one sister, Frances Quillen Barrett, and three infant brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Anderson Quillen of the home; one daughter, Nancy Jo Quillen Collins and husband, Tom, of Gray; one granddaughter, Katy Anne Collins Little and husband, Will, of Gray; two grandsons, James Joseph Collins and Thomas Anderson Collins, both of Gray; three brothers, Mack Quillen of Augusta, GA, Rev. Maurice Quillen and wife, Rena, of Morristown, TN, and Wayne Quillen and wife, Barbara, of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. John H. Quillen, 88, 1826 Park St., died at 11 a.m. Tuesday [12/29/1964] in Holston Valley Community Hospital.

He was born in Scott County, Va., and had lived in Kingsport since 1916.  He was a veterinarian and a farmer.  He was a member of Weber's Chapel in Scott County, Va.

Survivors include sons, Grady of Kingsport and Robert C. of Cincinnati; daughters, Mrs. Iva Nell Harless, Mrs. Ina Belle Heath and Mrs. Susan Ketron all of Kingsport; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

KINGSPORT — Larry Wayne Quillen , 70, of Kingsport, passed away Sunday ( May 22, 2011 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center .

Born in Kingsport on July 16, 1940 , a son of the late Maynard and Polly Babb Quillen , he had resided in this area his entire life. Larry was a 1958 graduate of Blountville High School and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at Knights Trim Shop in Kingsport and was then employed at Holston Defense Corp. for nine years, Raytheon Corporation for 13 years, then returned to Holston Defense Corp. until his retirement in 1995. Larry will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, dad, papaw, brother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Wayland Long.

Larry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mildred Quillen ; one son, Brian Quillen and wife, Beth; two grandchildren, Dalton Quillen and Bailey Quillen ; one brother, Bob Quillen of Sebring, Fla.; two sisters, Jackie Long and Ruth Quillen , both of Blountville; several sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Home National Cemetery , Mountain Home , Tenn. Joe Robinette will officiate.

Lee “Mac” Quillen, 76, of Kingsport, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 with his wife by his side. He was a former resident of Virginia and had resided in Kingsport for the past 52 years. Lee served in the U.S. Air Force. His tour of duty was spent in Germany and Tripoli, Libya. Lee “Mac” retired from Holston Defense after 33 years of service and from BAE after 10 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawton and Mary Quillen, and two sisters, Anna Ruth Quillen and Colleen Kilgore.

Lee is survived by his wife, Norma Quillen of the home; son, Kevin Quillen and wife, Tonya of Telford, TN; daughter, Beth Henley from Kingsport; granddaughters (his little angels), Alexis, Katelyn and Sarah Quillen; brothers, J.C. SEBRING, Fla. -- L. M. Quillen, 71, died at his home here of an apparent heart attack some time Tuesday [ 7/24/1973 ].

His body was not discovered until Wednesday afternoon, when his wife returned from a visit with relatives.

A native of Scott County , Quillen attended Scott County schools and was graduated from the old Shoemaker High School .  He attended the U. S. Military Academy at West Point and was graduated from Cumberland University School of Law at Lebanon , Tenn.   He never practiced law, but became claims manager of the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Co. of Baltimore in Knoxville , Nashville and Ft. Myers , Fla. offices.

Upon his retirement, he set up his own independent insurance agency, from which he recently retired for a second time.

He is survived by his widow, Ethel Byrd Hargraves Quillen, of the home; a son, Leigh Mathieson Quillen of Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers, C. G. Quillen and Cecil D. Quillen, both of Gate City; two grandchildren.

The body will be cremated and memorial services will be held later at a date to be announced.

The family has requested no flowers.  Those wishing to pay tribute may make contributions to the building fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Sebring, where he was chairman of the building committee.

BRIDGEPORT, Ind. - Lilburn L. Quillen, 84, died at his residence in Bridgeport Saturday [ Nov 19, 1960 ] at 1:30 a.m.

KINGSPORT - Mary Ethel Quillen 90, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (May 31, 2003) at Brian Health Care Center in Weber City, Va.

She was born in Scott County, Va., (Gate City), and moved to Kingsport in 1935. She was retired as a physical therapist for Dr. Shobe, Dr. Strain and Dr. Malloy.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walker E. and Ida Bell Davidson Quillen; three sisters, Gladys Quillen, Patricia Kerr and Edna Jones; two brothers, Walker P. Quillen and Carl R. Quillen.

Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Emma Pearl Quillen Owens of Kingsport; her nephew, Edd R. "Mickey" Jones of Church Hill; six nieces, Betty Quillen Bailey and husband George of Kingsport, Virginia Fick and husband Bob of Kingsport, Peggy Quillen Bologna and husband Joe of Billings, England, Billie Jean Chowning and husband Scott of North Carolina, Joyce Ann Quillen Salyers and husband David of Florida, and Jackie Owens Nickols of Kingsport.

Maynard H. Quillen, 67, of Rt. 4, Blountville, died Monday morning [10/4/1971] at Holston Valley Community Hospital following an illness of some two months.

Born in Scott County, Va., he moved to Sullivan County in 1935.  He worked for Blue Ridge Glass Corporation for 25 years, retiring in 1956 because of disability.  He was a charter member of the Woodrow Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maynard H. (Polly) Quillen, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Wayland (Jackie) Long, and Miss Ella Ruth Quillen, both of Blountville; two sons, Larry W. Quillen, Blountville, and Bobby Lee Quillen, Miami, Fla.; stepmother, Emily Quillen, Gate City; seven sisters, Mrs. J. G. Spears, Mrs. C. E. Sensabaugh, Miss Nina Quillen, all of Kingsport, Mrs. Ralph Venable, Mrs. Harold Davis, Mrs. Alfred Herron, and Mrs. Carl Tipton, all of Gate City; four brothers, Eugene Quillen, Ravenswood, W. She was born July 24, 1933 to the late Canary Turner and Elsie Owens Turner. Including her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy Quillen.

Survivors include one husband, Osta A. Quillen, Jr., Ft. Blackmore, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Terry Dishner, Duffield, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Audie and Kay Quillen, Weber City, Va.; sisters, Ima Hillman and Mary Ruth Gray, Kingsport; grandchildren, Tara Dishner Sturgill and husband, Will and Meghan Dishner; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. Richie Neese and the Rev. Ed Blair officiating.

KINGSPORT - Mildred Iona Ramey Quillen, 62, passed away on Saturday (March 5, 2011) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a long struggle with cancer.

She was born on March 11, 1948 and previously employed as a lab technician at Tennessee Eastman Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George R. Ramey on Nov. 20, 2010 and Virginia Shuler Ramey in 1993.

Survivors are her beloved husband of 42 years, Bobby Delmar Quillen, whom she admired; two sons, Matthew Robert Quillen and Christopher Ryan Quillen; three sisters, Janet Gammon and husband, Bill of Baileyton, Judy Williams, Bluff City and Elizabeth McDuffie and husband, Pete, Mars Hill, N.C.; two brothers, Richard Ramey, Church Hill and George Wayne Ramey and wife, Debbie, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va. and anytime at the residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Steve McNew officiating. Music will be provided by Eugene Harper.

Burial will follow at the Carter Cemetery, Stoney Creek, Ft. Blackmore, Va.

GATE CITY -- Mrs. Monnie Clala Quillen, 81, died in Holston Valley Community Hospital Wednesday morning [Sep 29, 1976] following an extended illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a Methodist.

Survivors include her husband, James Frank Quillen, Gate City; two daughters. Mrs. Carmine (Mildred) Elliott, Gate City, and Mrs. H. L. (Myrtle) McConnell, Kingsport; one sister, Mrs. Solon Addington, Gate City; one brother, A. C. Salling Jr., Weber City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Worley C. Quillen; her second husband, Albert T. Quillen; sisters, Callie Henry, Sallie Minor, Darthula Hartsock, Odie Lawson, Georgia Barner; brothers, Patton, Hubert, Orville, Archie and Ingle Lawson.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Charles Harrison, Lucretia and Al Fletcher, Kingsport; three sons and daughters-in-law, James H. Quillen, Church Hill, Charles W. Quillen, Nashville, Dennis G. and Janice Quillen, Kingsport; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Nina Estelle Quillen, 87, East Center Street, departed this life Thursday ( Jan. 20, 2000 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center .

A native of Scott County , Va. , she had lived most of her life in Kingsport . She worked several years for J. Fred Johnson Department Store and retired from Millers Department Store. She served in the U.S.O. in World War II. She was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church .

She was preceded in death by her parents, James H. Quillen Sr. and Rebecca McClellan Quillen; three sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are four sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie Venable, Gate City, Va., Mrs. William A. (Kathleen) Herron, Gate City, Va., Mrs. William F. (Lorella) Salley and Mrs. Harold L. (Edna) Davis, all of Kingsport; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James H. Quillen Jr. and Charlotte, Kingsport and Carl Don Quillen and Elva, Gate City, Va.; special nieces, Jackie Long and Ruth Quillen; special nephews, Larry Quillen, Fred Quillen and Ron Quillen; and several other nieces and nephews.

Nina Lee McConnell Quillen, 89, of Gate City went home to be with the Angels & her Heavenly Father on Monday evening (April 26, 2010) at the Brian Center in Weber City, VA. She was a lifelong resident of Scott County.

Nina was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, & friend and will always be loved and missed. She was born on January 31, 1921 and was the daughter of the late E. L. McConnell, Sr. & Edith Quillen McConnell. Mrs. Quillen was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church and even though unable to attend for several years was always interested in "her" church and was grateful for the prayers and visits from her other church family at First Baptist Church of Gate City and especially Rev. Jeff DeBoard who was with her to begin her new journey home. We will miss her wonderful, giving spirit and the ever present smile.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit E. Quillen; a brother, Odell McConnell; a sister, Dorothy Pendleton.

Nina Quillen is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ann Edwards & husband, Kenneth (Gate City, VA); her grandsons, Shannon Edwards, Randy Edwards & wife, Angie; a great grandson, Matt Edwards & mother, Bekki Repass; her step-granddaughters, Kayla & Kristen Brooks; a brother, E. L. McConnell, Jr. & wife, Naomi; a brother-in-law, Elliott Armbrister; her sister-in-law, Barbara Quillen along with several nieces and nephews.

CHURCH HILL -- Mrs. Ollie Cora Quillen, 83, of Route 3, Church Hill, was pronounced dead on arrival at Indian Path Hospital at 1:45 a.m. Friday [8/24/1979].

She was a native of Sulli­van County, but had spent most of her life in Hawkins County.  She was a member of the Cedars Chapel Free­will Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. James (Elwanda) Carter, Church Hill, Mrs. John (Violet) Goins, and Miss Frances Quillen, both of Kingsport, Mrs. Carl (Jean) Robinette, Taylorsville, N.C., and Mrs. Ernest (Polly) Collins, Mt. Carmel; three sons, Hiram Quillen and Doyle Quillen, both of Mt. Carmel, and Paul Quillen, Kingsport; 24 grandchil­dren; 27 great-grandchil­dren: and two great-great­-grandchildren.

Allen Quillen, 44, 1557 Kings Rd., Kingsport, died at 9:10 a.m. Thursday morning (July 23, 1987) at Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in Sullivan County, he had lived in Riverside, Calif, be­fore returning to Kingsport in 1980.  He was a truck driver and was in the U.S. Air Force serving in the Vietnam Conflict.  He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Quillen, in 1979.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Courtney Quillen, Kingsport; three daughters, Mrs. Glen (Vickie) Light, Beverly Quillen and Debbie Quillen, all of Kingsport; three sons, David Allen Shear and Mark Shear, both of Winter Park, Fla., David R. Olivia Rose Quillen, infant daughter of Jeremiah Martin Quillen & Amanda Marie Kemper, went home to be with the Angels on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. She is in heaven with her maternal great grandfather, James Dewire and paternal great grandfather, Lloyd Quillen.

In addition to her parents she leaves behind a brother, Jayden; sister, Samantha; maternal grandparents, Yvonne Kemper & Michael Kemper; paternal grandparents, Cathy Lane Quillen & Mark Quillen; maternal great grandmother, Beth Dewire; and paternal great grandparents, Ruby Quillen, R.B. & Kate Lane. Several aunts, uncles & cousins also survive.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Omer L. Quillen, 52, 1904 Mountain View Ave., died Tuesday [10/21/1958] at 2:30 p.m. at Holston Valley Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Scott County, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chris Quillen, and had been a resident of Sullivan County for 15 years.

Self employed in refrigeration he attended the Golda Memorial Methodist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Kate Patrick Quillen; two daughters, Miss Alma Sue Quillen and Mrs. Carl Hartsock, both of Kingsport; four sisters, Mrs. G. L. Orvil Quillen Dies of Heart Attack

Funeral services for Orvil K. Quillen were held Saturday at 2 p.m. with Bro. Frank Durham officiating.

Mr. Quillen died Thursday [March 30, 1967] at his home in Fall River following a heart attack.  He was 71 years old.  Mr. Quillen was a native of Virginia but had lived in Lawrence County [Tenn] for 42 years.  He was a member of Scotts Hill Baptist Church, a veteran of World War I, and a retired school teacher.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mae Frazier Quillen; two sons, O. K. Quillen, Jr., Athens, Ala., Frazier Quillen, at home; one sister, Mrs. Grady Coley, of Virginia; two brothers, Jeff Quillen , of Illinois, and Olan of Virginia.  Also surviving are two grandchildren.

Otis W. Quillen, 76, a resi­dent of Hillside Manor, died Sunday [5/11/1986] morning at Indian Path Hospital.

A native of Scott County, he had lived in Kingsport for the past 50 years.

Mr. Quillen was employed with the Tennessee Eastman Company in the C. E. Maintenance division for 34 years, retiring in 1968 due to health reasons.  After retirement, he worked for Pinkerton Security Service and Big K Department Store.

He was preceded in death by his parents Zeke and Mary Bella­my Quillen, and three brothers, Corbet Quillen, Lucian Quillen, and Homer Quillen.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Vicki) Doutt Jr., Kingsport; one son, Jack Lee Quillen, Gregory, Mich.; several grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gaines (Leota) Morrison and Mrs. Frank (Opal) Archer, both of Fall Branch; two brothers, Howard Quillen, Fall Branch, and Everett Quillen, Greeneville.

Born Jan. 21, 1910 in Scott County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Melissa Gillenwater.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert S. Quillen; two sisters, Nannie Carrico and Vesta Enix; two brothers, Homer and Lee Gillenwater; three grandsons, Bobby and Billy Sallings, Teddy Quillen; six step-children, Charles, Banner and Ova Quillen, Nannie Bradley, Lela Gillenwater and Kate Tomberlin.
Surviving are nine daughters, Joan Langrel and Shirley Williams, both of Gate City, Va., Reba Miller, Moore, Okla., Ollie Dockery, Weber City, Va., Gertrude Lawson and Brenda Sallings, both of Fort Blackmore, Va., Nina La Force, Allen Park, Mich., Marie Sanders, Hiltons, Va. and Cathy Doty, Austin, Texas; five sons, Fred and E.S. Quillen Jr., both of Gate City, Va., Patton Quillen, Clinchport, Va., Odell Quillen, Fort Blackmore, Va. and Mack Quillen, Hiltons, Va.; two sisters, Etta Moody, Marion, N.C., and Blanche Hammonds, Gate City, Va.; one brother, H.W. Gillenwater; a special niece and nephew, Vickie Jones and Fred Carrico; a special granddaughter and her husband, Kim and Steven Stewart; 55 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

FT. BLACKMORE, Va. -- Paul Lee Quillin, 79, Route 1, Ft. Blackmore, died at 9 a.m. Monday at his residence after a long illness.

A lifelong resident of Scott County , Mr. Quillin was a former gunsmith.

Surviving are a brother, Rev. Herman C. Quillin, Ft. Blackmore ; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everson V. and Mozella McConnell Quillin.

GATE CITY, Va -- Paul Willis Quillen Sr., 46, of Route 2, Gate City, died at 2:45 p.m. today [3/2/1978] in Weber City, Va., of an apparent heart attack.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, he attended the Holiness Church and was employed by the City Cab Co. in Gate City.  He was a member of the Scott County Communications Club, where he was known as "Cheyenne."

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Billie Sue Quillen: his mother, Mrs. Velvie McDavid Quillen, Gate City; two daughters. Mrs. David (Judy) Spear and Mrs. Robert (Diana) Wilson, both of Kingsport; two sons, Paul W. Quillen Jr., Kingsport, and Danny K. GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Paul Willis Quillen Jr., 48, entered into rest on Saturday (July 15, 2000) in Gainesville, Fla.

Mr. Quillen was born in Kingsport, Tenn. and moved to St. Augustine seven years ago coming from Gate City.

He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and was with the bus ministry driving the deaf and blind to church.

He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Willis Quillen, March 1, 1978.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Quillen, St. Augustine, Fla.; children, Amy Leann Quillen, Elizabethton, Tenn., Dolly Ann Robinson, Heiskell, Tenn.; stepson, Tracey Joe Crull, Centerville, Ind.; mother, Billie Quillen, Gate City; sisters, Judy Spears, Kingsport and Diane (Robert H.) She was born in Scott County, Va., and was employed as secretary and bookkeeper for Tom Yancey, Inc.  She was a Baptist.

Survivors include one son, Fred Quillin, Lansdale, Pa.; her mother, Mrs. Elnora Boatright, Fort Blackmore, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Mable Wing, Gate City, Va.; two brothers, Robert F., and Buford Boatright, both of Kingsport; two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Chapel.  Rev. Samuel W. Taten and Rev. Elton Jones will conduct the service.  Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.

GREENEVILLE - Pauline M. (Dotson) Quillen, 79, died Thursday ( Feb. 16, 2006 ) at her residence.

She was of the Baptist tradition of faith and attended Friendship Baptist and Benton 's Chapel Churches as long as her health permitted. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and homemaker.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed raising flowers, and was an avid fan of pro-wrestling and Nascar racing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Audrey Dotson; husband, Everet L. Quillen; two infant children, Timothy and Patricia Quillen; three brothers, Jerry, Bud and Johnny Dotson; sister, Bertha Puckett; and three grandchildren.

Surviving are 12 children and spouses, Bill and Cathy Quillen, Jeff and Revonda Quillen, Robin and Lloyd Ricker, Anthony Quillen, Peggy and Ralph Gross, Sharon and Roger Shipley, all of Greeneville, Ricky Quillen of Jonesborough, Mary and Daniel Smith, Roger and Betty Quillen, Margaret and Larry Stapleton, Brenda and Rex Stapleton and Michael and Glenda Quillen, all of Kingsport; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Nell Dotson, Sharon Dotson and Leota Winstead; several other cousins, nephews, nieces; and special friends, Delphia Osborne, Kate Byington, Frances McGhee, Arkie Jones, and Mavis Kincaid. KINGSPORT — Polly Babb Quillen, 97, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday ( March 11, 2008 ) at the Wexford House after a lengthy illness.

Polly was born Dec. 2, 1910 in Scott County, Va. to Worley Cleveland Babb and Sally Marie Williams Babb. She was a homemaker and attended Fall Creek Baptist Church before her illness.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Robert Williams, Dr. Richard Reed, Joanne Thompson, Carrie Woodard and to her special neighbors.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Maynard Hershell Quillen in 1971; and sisters, Vada Peters, Cora Lane and Dora Bowen; and one brother, Olin N. Babb, Sr.

KINGSPORT — Peggie Jo Quillen, 77, of Kingsport, passed away on Friday (June 12, 2009) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Quillen was born Jan. 13, 1932 in Bristol, Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Alma Simcox and had resided in this area all of her life.

She was a retired secretary from the Sullivan County School System. She was also a member of First Christian Church and Kingsport Senior Citizens Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Quillen.

Survivors include her three children, Bytha Kilgore and her husband, Rick of Kingsport, John Quillen and his wife, Barb of Roswell, Ga., Amy Carr and her husband, Curt of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Mandy Kilgore and Laura Quillen; one great-grandchild, Cayden Hayes and several cousins.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home. Services will follow with, Bill Dunnashec officiating.

KINGSPORT — Ray G. Quillen, 77, known as “Poppy” to family and “Bobo” to friends, died unexpectedly, closed his eyes, and went home to Heaven Friday morning ( Nov. 2, 2007 ) at his home.

He was born in Kingsport where he lived his entire life. Ray was an employee of Mead Corporation retiring after 40 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish and work with his hands.

Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Charlene Quillen. He was the last of a family of eight: brothers, Joe Clyde, Hubert and John; and sisters, Lonnie, Blanche, Edith and Bessie.

LEBANON, Va. - Richard Lee Quillen, 50, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at his home. Richard was born May 28, 1961, a son of Stephen M. Quillen and the late Nancy Campbell Quillen, he was a lifelong resident of Lebanon. A 1981 graduate of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va., he received two associate degrees from Southwest Virginia Community College. He was an active member, elder and member of the choir of Grace Presbyterian Church in Glade Spring. He began his career in broadcasting with WLRV in Lebanon at 15 years of age and later was with WXLZ in Castlewood. He became a radio personality with WXBQ in Bristol 25 years ago co-hosting the Morning Air Show and was the host of the Saturday Night Request and Dedication Show. He had worked for WAXM in Norton the past year co-hosting The Morning Drive and the Saturday Night Request Show. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Abby Quillen, Meadowview; his daughter, Casey Anne Quillen, Meadowview; his father, Stephen M. Quillen, Lebanon; his sister, Suzi Q. Mays and husband, Ronnie Mays, Charlotte, N.C.; his brother, Ira M. Quillen II, Lynchburg, Va.; two nieces, Morgan A. Mays and Ally N. Mays both of Charlotte; and his uncle, James W. FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Robert Charlie (R.C.) Quillen, 75, formerly of Gate City, departed from this life Friday (Oct. 22, 1999) in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind. after an extended illness.

Mr. Quillen retired from Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company (Dope Department) in 1972. He was a combat veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.

BLOUNTVILLE - Roger Dale Quillen, 48, was called home to be with the Lord Tuesday (March 7, 2006) due to a heart attack.

Roger has been the most loving and attentive husband for the past 25 years. He was a retired real estate broker, an avid musician and enjoyed playing tennis.

Roger Dale was a Christian and a member of State Line Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mom and dad, Helen Regena and Alvin W. Quillen; and brother-in-law, Joey Wayne Little.

Roger is survived by his adoring wife, Lisa Quillen; one sister, Susan Pressley and husband, Wayne, Kingsport; one brother, Lynn Quillen and wife, Millie of Gate City, Va.

He was born in Scott County, was a retired farmer and former Tennessee Eastman employee.  He had lived in Kingsport the past several years.

Survivors include a son, John P. Quillen, Oscoda, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Worley Lane, Kingsport and Mrs. A. J. Robert Floyd Quillin

Rushia Coffey Quillen, 98, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

She was born December 24, 1908, in Nelson County, Virginia, daughter of John Coffey and Ella Bragg Coffey.

She was a longtime resident of Waynesboro and former member of First Presbyterian Church. Rushia enjoyed a long career in retailing which spanned over 80 years. While living in Waynesboro, she worked at Leggetts over 25 years and continued to work full time at Wal-Mart in Hattiesburg until she was 96 years old.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Echol A. Quillen in 1957.

Surviving are her son, Dennis E. Quillen of Hattiesburg; and daughter, Carol Q. Higginbotham of Hattiesburg; two grandchildren, Dawn Walters of Bloomington, Indiana and Shay Quillen of San Jose, California; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Graham Walters of Bloomington, Indiana.

A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Riverview Cemetery by Dr. Glen A. Holman.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Winkle officiating and eulogy by Dave Sawyer. Music will be provided by Jane Winkle and the James McConnell Singers.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City.

The family will meet at the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service. Johnny Lawson, Billy Ricketts, Dave Sawyer, and Jeff Sides will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Sallie Lawson Quillin, 72, died at noon Wednesday [6/12/1957] at Holston Valley Community Hospital following a stroke last Friday.

She was a native of Scott County, Va., but had made her home with her daughter, Miss Marjorie Quillin, 1218 Cherry Street, in Kingsport.  Her husband, James A. Quillin, died in August, 1955.

She was a member of Antioch Methodist Church.

Survivors include, besides her daughter, one son. Glen W. Quillin, of Kingsport; one brother, Fuller Lawson of Snowflake, Va., and two grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Antioch Methodist Church, Gate City, Route 2.  The Rev. Kenneth Williams and the Rev. J. H. Loveworth will officiate.  Burial will be in the Quillin family cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rayford Quillen, Ted Lowe, Osborne Smith, Ezra Porter, Maldon Lane, Robert Pendleton, Hershel Hammond and Mack Culbertson.

The body will remain at McConnell Funeral Home in Gate City until time for the funeral.

Sam E. Quillen, 64, 1565 Garland Street, died at 5:30 Friday mornng [3/16/1973] at his home after an extended illness.

Born in Scott County, Va. he had resided in Kingsport for the past 30 years.  He was an employe of Tennessee Eastman Company having retired in 1972 from the AY Main­tenance Department.  He was a member of the Vermont United Methodist Church.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ruby Powers Quillen of the home; daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Nunley, Mrs. Anna Lee Craddock, Mrs. Jean Barnette, all of Kingsport, and Mrs. Edna Talbert, Baltimore, Maryland; one son, Sammy Lynn Quillen, Baltimore, Md.; step-mother, Mrs. Lola Mulcare, Clearwater, Florida; half-sisters, Mrs. Nora Muller, Clearwater, Florida, Mrs. Ruth Bridges, Kingsport; half-brother, Archie Quillen, Kingsport; 12 grandchildren.

Hamlett-Dobson is in charge of the arrangements.

Samuel 'Sam' Lee Quillen, Sr. 56, 141 Gillenwater Street, Kingsport, died late Monday afternoon (Jan. 29, 1996) at Indian Path Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport) he had at­tended Dobyns-Bennett High School but graduated from Sulli­van South High School.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had retired from Transus Trucking Company.

He attended Bible Way Baptist Church and Good Shepard Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Lidle and Lissie Riggs Quillen; two brothers, James E. Quillen, Richard Quil­len; two sisters, Kelly Mae Spanley [Stanley] and Bonnie Reece.

Surviving are two sons, Samu­el Lee Quillen, Jr., Richard Larry Quillen, both of Kingsport; one step-son, Christopher Miller, Kingsport; one granddaughter; one step-granddaughter; six sis­ters, Mrs. Bob (Millie) Marcum, Ms. Ethel Russel, Mrs. Don (Shelby) Robinette, all of Kingsport, Mrs. Maggie Forkum, Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Mrs. Gary (Kay) Short, Kingsport, Mrs. James (Shirley) Cradic, Church Hill; several nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY, Va. - Sallie Katherine Quillen, 82, of Gatewood Court, departed this life Sunday afternoon (April 29, 2001) in the Emergency Room at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born January 24, 1919 in Scott County, Va. With the exception of a brief residence in Wisconsin, she had lived her entire life in Scott County.

Mrs. Quillen worked at the Shirt Factory, Bush's and Lane's Restaurants. She farmed, raised tobacco and enjoyed vegetable gardening before her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raiford Lee Williams; second husband, Earl Quillen; daughter, Sherrill Lucille Williams; parents, Earl Ernest Taylor and Almeda Peters Taylor; sisters, Mae Taylor Peters, Bertha Taylor, Ola Taylor Lloyd and Polly Taylor; brothers, Guy Taylor, Jack Taylor, Ed Taylor, Tom Taylor and Bob Taylor.

Surviving are her daughter, Phyllis Williams Stevenson and husband, David, Lake City, Fla.; son, George Patton Williams and wife, Patricia, Middleton, Wisc.; sister, Marie Taylor Alley, Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Rebecca Lee Williams Spindler and husband, Sean, Bonnie Stevenson Green and husband, Jordan, John D. Stevenson, and Carla M. Williams; two great-granddaughters, Madelyn Lee Spindler and Catherine Lane Green; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stanford Edward Quillen, Sr., 87, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Shenandoah House in Fishersville.

He was born October 20, 1924 in Waynesboro, a son of the late George Dewey Quillen and Daisy Kiser Quillen.

He served his country during World War II in the Marine Corps, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro. He was the founder and Chairman of the Board of Waynesboro Landscape & Garden Center, and a past president of the Virginia Nurserymens Association. He also has served on the Augusta County Board of Supervisors.

Stan was a past member of Lee Lodge # 209 A.F. & A.M., including the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and the Shriners; a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2270 BPOE, and Moose Lodge #1454. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club, and has served on the board for the Salvation Army. Service to his community was important to Stan, and he contributed freely.

His first wife, Virginia Porter Quillen, preceded him in death in 1977. He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters: Frances Quillen McMurray and Doris Kiser Higinbotham, and a son-in-law, Forrest E. Stover, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Lessley Quillen; a daughter, Gwynne Stover of Waynesboro; 2 sons: Stan Quillen, Jr. and Patty Quillen, Lee Porter Quillen and Sandy Truillo, all of Waynesboro; grandchildren: Ginna Quillen, Nicholas Quillen, Courtney Robertson, Derek Robertson; and his canine companion, "Toby."

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011 at First Baptist Church by Rev. David Washburn and Rev. B.C. Akers. The family will receive friends in the church following the service.

The interment service in Riverview Cemetery will be private.

Gate City- Sybil K. Hilton Quillen, 95, of Gate City, passed away late Thursday night (April 10, 20141) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County. Sybil worked several years at P.H. Nickels Store along with being a homemaker. Mrs. Quillen was a member of First Baptist Church of Gate City where she was recently recognized for being the oldest living member of the church. She loved to grow flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen M. Quillen; parents, E. F. and Grace Burke Hilton; a sister, Geneva Jennings.

Sybil Quillen is survived by her son, Dr. Frank W. Quillen; a brother, Fred A. Hilton; her nieces, Janice McQueen, Judith Everhart, and Carolyn Freeland; her nephews, Jim Jennings and Larry Hilton.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Gate City.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday (April 15, 2014) at 7 p.m. at the church with Rev. Andy Barnes and Rev. Jeff DeBoard, officiating. Music will be provided by Dennis Fritz.

Louise Quillen, 87, of Gate City, passed away on Friday (February 19, 2010) at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Virginia. Mrs. Quillen was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Rhea Quillen; her parents, John & Edith Barnes Bush; a sister, Katherine Doriot.

Tony Patrick Quillen, 28, 2304 Meadow Rd., Kingsport, was pronounced dead on arrival Wednes­day (July 28, 1993) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Cen­ter.

He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was a 1982 grad­uate of Dobyns-Bennett High School.  He was assistant manager of Cherokee Food Market (Memo­rial Blvd.)  He was a Ham radio operator and was an avid bowler.

Surviving are his parents, Paul and Pauline Mellons Quillen, of the home; two brothers, David P. Quillen and Wayne P. Quillen, both of Kingsport; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mellons, Blountville; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carter-Trent Fu­neral Home and anytime at the residence, 2304 Meadow Road, Kingsport.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. -- Vernon Waldo Quillen, 52, of Nickelsville, Va., died at 2 a.m. Sunday [10/13/1974] at Holston Valley Community Hospital following a brief illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County, a member of the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville, a veteran of W.W. II, and was employed as an electrical inspector for Scott County.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Jo Quillen of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Billy Harold (Theresa) Vicars, Nickelsville; one son, Timothy S. Quillen, U.S. Air Force in Goldsboro, N.C.; three sisters, Miss Evelyn Quillen, Nickelsville, Mrs. Ralph (Uneva) King, Kingsport, and Mrs. Fred (Faye) Casey, Richlands, Va.; two grandchildren.
