NICKELSVILLE, Va. - James Calvin (J.C.) Salyer, 64, Route 1, passed away Friday (April 19, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Salyer was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. He was a self-employed truck driver for 46 years and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Salyer was also of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Maggie Page Salyer; sister, Pauline Dockery; brothers, Cyle Salyer and K.D. Salyer.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Rita Fern Culbertson Salyer of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Johnny Fraysier, Trish and Darrell Meade, and Jan and Jackie Rhoton, all of Nickelsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny Michael and Teresa Salyer, James Ray and Pam Salyer, all of Nickelsville; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Dockery, Liberty Center, Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elsie and Ray Greear, Dungannon, Va., Dorothy and Curtis Horne, Nickelsville; brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Gaye Salyer, Nickelsville.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Henry Wayne Meade and Roger Phillips officiating.

Music will be provided by Meade's Chapel Trio.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the family cemetery (Long Hollow section). The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to proceed to the cemetery.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

GATE CITY -- Jessee Elbert Salyer, 77, died at the home of his son, Clyde, at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Robie Salyer; seven daughters, Mrs. Ella Comer, Mrs. Emma Grizzle, Mrs. Martha Grizzle, Mrs. Effie McMurray, Mrs. Dora Smith, Mrs. Corda Lane, and Mrs. Mamie Lane, all of Gate City, Route 2; three sons, Lonnie, Clyde, and Junior, also of Gate City, Route 2; one brother, Bob Salyer, of Church Hill.

BRISTOL, Tenn. — John Haskell Salyer, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord at his final resting place on Thursday (Feb. 19, 2009) at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Salyer was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lonnie and Delphia Salyer.

He was a retiree of General Motors of Ohio. John’s ministry was singing and playing the guitar for the glory of God. He was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church.

John also enjoyed life with 3 special brothers-in-law, John Otis Laughlin, Scott Laughlin and David Hinkle and also three special sisters-in-law Ruth Hinkle, Lucille Laughlin and Mable Ragan.

Survivors include wife, Dorothy Jean Salyer; daughter, Bonita Brock and husband Brad, of Marble Hill, Mo., Brenda Hooker and husband David, of Blountville, Michelle Cross and husband Zeb, Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; sons, Jim Salyer and wife Virginia, of Marble Hill, Mo., Tony Fleenor and his wife Donna, of Blountville; grandchildren, Amanda Whittenborn, Margaret and Lisa Brock, Stephanie, Michaela, and Joshua Salyer, all of Marble Hill, Mo., Amy and Jonathan Hooker, of Blountville, Jamie Fleenor, of Bristol, Tenn.; great-granddaughter, Jazmine Whittenborn; special great- granddaughter, Aubrey Hooker; brother, William "Bill" Salyer and his wife Wanda, of Weber City; nephew, Scotty Duane Salyer and his wife Misty; several nieces and nephews.

Kive Bellamy Salyer, 93, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at her home in St. Paul, Virginia.

She was born in Wise County , Virginia ; daughter of the late, William and Mary Robinette Bellamy. She was preceded in death by her husband, McClellan Salyer; one daughter, Marie Grizzel; two sisters, Hazel Estelle Cook and Parthine Clay; one brother, William H. Bellamy, Jr. She was a member of the St. Paul Assembly of God Church for over 60 years.

She is survived by three sons, McClellan "Tub" Salyer, Jr. and wife, Norma, of Castlewood, Virginia, Clifford Salyer and wife, Sue, of Castlewood, Virginia, and Allen Wayne Salyer of Bristol, Virginia; one son-in-law, R.C. Grizzel of Castlewood, Virginia; one sister, Irene Collins of Castlewood, Virginia; one brother, Paul Bellamy and wife, Nancy, of Bristol, Virginia; eight grandchildren; a very special granddaughter, Dena Jessee and a grandson, Billy Salyer; ten great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Uncle Larry Samuel Salyer, 64 of Gate City, (Midway Community) went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 9, 2012 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a Vietnam Veteran and had a great love for his family, friends and his animals. Larry was an avid Twin Springs basketball fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Stella Kiser Salyer; sisters, Lila Robinson and Deana Hilman; brothers Leon Salyer, Dave Salyer, Eugene Salyer, Bill Salyer and Joe Salyer.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Pauline Salyer; sisters, Joyce Farmer and husband Bobby, Judy Bledsoe and husband Bob, Linda Kugler and Estelita Dougherty; sisters-in-law, Audrey Salyer, Margaret Salyer, Frances Salyer, Ruth Hensley and husband Bobby, Patricia Butler and Mildred Baldwin and husband Johnny; brothers-in-law, Jack bright and Ted Donald Bright; several nieces and nephews.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Lois Audrey Sluss Salyer, 68, died Tuesday ( Feb. 12, 2002 ) at the residence of her son after a long illness.

Born in Scott County , Va. , on March 17, 1933 , she was the daughter of the late Cyrus Sluss and Virgie Hartsock Sluss.

Mrs. Salyer was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Leon Salyer ( June 22, 1997 ); one great-grandchild, Cody Green.

KINGSPORT - Mary Ann Campbell McClellan, 89, died Friday morning (Sept. 14, 2001) at Church Hill Life Care Center due to a lengthy illness.

She attended Hope Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Homer Campbell, Earl Campbell and Jerry Campbell; two sisters, Cornie Powers and Benita Edison.

Survivors include one daughter, Reba Jean Dixon, Falls Church, Va.; two sisters, Irene Salyers and Ora Collins; one brother, Charles (Lundy) Campbell; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT William H. Bill Salyer Sr. went to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Monday (April 5, 2010) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Bill was born in Scott County, Va., and lived in Wise, Va., for over 40 years then moved to Kingsport in 1985. He retired from Westmoreland Coal Corp. after over 35 years of service.

Bill was a member of Homeland Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Salyer; his parents, Dewey H. and Nannie Williams Salyer.

He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Charlotte Horne Salyer, of the home; one daughter, Patty Salyer Miller and husband, Keith Miller, of Houston, Texas; two sons, Dr. William H. Salyer Jr. and wife, Randy, of Sumter, S.C., and Ronald B. Salyer and wife, Cindy, of Raleigh, N.C.; two special grandchildren, Johnny and Heather Wright; seven grandchildren, William Brent, Shannon, Brian, Jeffrey, Rebecca, Jessica and Lori; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, June Salyer Minor of Lynchburg, Va., and Shirley Rathbone of Waynesville, N.C.; two nieces, Teresa Roberts and Kim Bishop; two nephews, Anthony Minor and B.K. BRISTOL, Tenn. — Lillian P. Sammons, 70, of Bluff City, went to her heavenly home on Thursday (April 30, 2009) from Unicoi County Memorial Hospital in Erwin after a long illness.

A native of Bristol, Tenn., she was born on March 31, 1939 to Beulah Ramey Laughlin and the late Johney Albert Laughlin.

In addition to her mother, Beulah Laughlin of Blountville, Lillian is survived by her sons, Jeffrey and Jack Sammons of Bluff City; step-daughter, Connie Bussey and husband, Steve of Blountville; grandson, Logan Sammons; brothers, Albert Laughlin and wife, Elva of Blountville, Wesley Laughlin and wife, Joyce of Kingsport and Dale Laughlin of Blountville; sisters Hazel Kidd of Kingsport, Louise Gibson and husband, Pastor Johnny of Kingsport and Etta McMurray and husband, J.T. of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Newport, Tenn., he had lived most of his life in Kingsport and was a Baptist.

She was born in Sullivan County and had spent her entire life here and was a member of the Riverside Avenue Baptist Church.

KINGSPORT - Mary F. Nelson Samples, 90, left her earthly tabernacle behind to find peace and rest in her heavenly home on Wednesday (Dec. 14, 2005). She had been a resident of The Wexford House a number of years due to declining health.

Born in Scott County, Va., on August 17, 1915, to W. D. and Louisa (Taylor) Nelson, she moved to Kingsport at a very early age and lived here almost all the rest of her life.

Mary was married to Robert L. Samples on August 1, 1931. She was a wonderful housekeeper and cook. She loved to sew, crochet, embroider, and made many lovely quilts. She also liked gardening and putting up food. Through the years, she had attended several different churches in the Tri-Cities area. She loved to read her Bible and thoroughly enjoyed good gospel singing.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 53 years, Robert L. Samples; two daughters, Anna Sue Samples and Lois Jean Kern; three sisters, Maxie Nelson, Amanda Spears, and Vernia Marshall; two brothers, Willie C. (Bill) and Charles Ernest Nelson; step-mother, Polly Kate Nelson; one step-sister, Lola Mae Samples; and two step-brothers, Howard and Raymond Howell.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Horton and husband, Charles (Herb); one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Samples and wife, Evelyn; and son-in-law, Thomas Kern, all of Kingsport; grandchildren, Andrea Anderson and husband, Randall of Kingsport, Letha Lane and husband, Randy of Gray, David Samples and wife, Marty, Penny Brooks and husband, Terry, all of Church Hill, Jeanie Dove and husband, William of Gray, Pam Atkins, Sherry Horne, Beth Gentry and husband, Chad, all of Kingsport, and Brian Kern and wife, Leisl of the Nashville area; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; also a very caring brother, J.B. Buddy Sampson, age 72, went to sleep in the arms of Jesus, February 14, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center. Born in Sullivan County, a son to the late Bud and Edith Sampson, he has resided in Sullivan and Hawkins County all his life. Buddy was a retired painter and trader. He was a member of Liberty Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and attended Freedom Baptist Church. Buddy was a born again Christian and loved the Lord.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of forty-four years, Carolyn McCann Sampson.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Sampson of Mt. Carmel; one son, Eddie Sampson and wife Marlene of Mt. Carmel; one daughter, Libby Greer and husband Tony of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Shanda Sampson, Justin Greer, Avery Greer; two brothers, Tony Sampson and wife Ruby, Kenny Sampson and wife Judy; one sister, Sherry Bellamy and husband Fred all of Gate City; and a special cousin, Sonny Bishop.

GATE CITY , Va. - Earnest Virgil Sampson Sr., 84, of East Jackson Street, went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning ( Sept. 6, 2005 ) at Indian Path Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 7, 1921, a son of the late Samuel Steaven Sampson and Alice Cookenhour Sampson of Scott County, Va.

Mr. Sampson was a quiet, gentle man of integrity who could tell you exactly what was on his mind and you knew all the time that he loved you with all his heart. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany during World War II. From his military he took membership with the VFW Post #3382, Kingsport , and the local DAV Chapter.

He retired from Laurel Branch Coal Company after 39 years of service. Through that he became a member of the United Mine Workers of America . He was a member of the Gate City Rebekah Lodge #86, the Gate City Lodge #170 Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Through that fraternal organization, he found many friends and traveled many thousands of miles serving. He was past Grand Master of the State of Virginia Order of Odd Fellows, past president of the Odd Fellows Home in Lynchburg . He was also a member of the following branches of the Odd Fellows: Encampment, Patriarch Militant and Canton . He received the Meritorious Service Award and the Decoration of Chivalry Award. He was a member of the Catlett Masonic Lodge, Gate City . He also served several terms on the Gate city Town Council where he was instrumental in getting the first new fire truck that the department ever had.

He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City where he served with his wife, daughter, grandson and his wife in the nursery department for many years. He served his Lord as treasurer of First Baptist faithfully for 40 years and had just been re-appointed for another term. He was deacon emeritus and had served on numerous committees at the church over the years.

When we say as a family that he was loved and will be missed is an understatement. The community as a whole will miss him and he loved everyone.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alice Almeda Sampson (who left us on Jan. 29, 2005); two sisters Mable Caler and Victoria Gibbs; brothers, S.S. (Syl) Sampson, Eugene Sampson, Thomas Leland Sampson, William K. (Bill) Sampson and Edgar Lee Sampson.

He is survived by his daughter, Frances Perry and husband Robert of Gate City; sons, E. Virgil Sampson Jr. and wife Connie of Gate City, and Ellis Lee Sampson and wife Pricilla of Bogalusa, La.; four grandchildren, Kim Jenkins and husband Stan, Robert Michael Perry and wife Sherry, Gina Fuller and husband Dr. Bill, and Ellis Lee Sampson II and wife Allison; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Payton Jenkins, Rindi Perry, Katie Beth, Emily and Bradley Fuller; brother-in-law, L.D. Tate Jr. of Clinchport, Va.; also several nieces and nephews and many friends are left to mourn his passing.

GATE CITY, Va. - F.H. (Bud) Sampson, 91, of Gate City, Va., went to be with the Lord early Monday morning (June 14, 2010) at Brookhaven Manor following a lengthy illness.

He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force. Bud was a retired carpenter and was a well-known horse trader. Mr. Sampson was a member of Liberty Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Jones Sampson; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sampson; his brother, Hugh Carl Sampson; and his sisters, Stella Bishop and Marie Ketron.

Bud Sampson is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Fred Bellamy (Gate City, Va.); three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Judy Sampson (Weber City, Va.), Tony and Ruby Sampson (Gate City, Va.), Buddy and Betty Sampson (Mount Carmel); eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carrie Bishop (Church Hill); a sister-in-law, Clorine Sampson (Richmond, Va.); along with several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home or friends may also call anytime at the residence of the daughter, Sherry Bellamy.

KINGSPORT - Joe Thomas Sampson, 79, passed away Wednesday ( April 19, 2006 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center .

Mr. Sampson was born on Jan. 15, 1927 in Scott County, Va., to the late Clayton F. Sampson and Amanda Elizabeth McDavid Sampson.

He had lived most of his life in the Kingsport area, was a building contractor and of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Sampson was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, John, Monnie, Ron, Bill, Maxie, Irene, Lillian, Junior, and Kathleen; and special friends, Harold "Red" Henley, John Haynes, Virgil Winkle, and Tommy Sampson.

Mr. Sampson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lona Mae Herndon Sampson; his children, Danny Thomas Sampson of Bristol, Tenn., Jennifer Hauk and husband Roger of Kingsport, Cindy Herron and husband Jerry of Church Hill, Johnny Aaron Sampson and wife Debra, of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Joey Herron and special friend, Jaime Duncan, Amanda Sampson, Zachary Sampson; two step-grandchildren, Michael Herron and wife Gina, Jeremy Herron and wife Cindy; five step great-grandchildren, Mekayla Million, Trevor Greene, Savannah Greene, Madison Herron, Trinity Herron; one step great-grandchild soon to arrive, Gracin Leann Herron; one brother, Roy Lee Sampson and wife Evelyn, of Hiltons, Va.; one sister, Faye Winkle Peck and husband Henry "Junior" of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Jimmy Wayne Sampson , 48 died unexpectedly Monday (April 26, 1999).

A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he served in the U.S. Marines and had been employed by the Kingsport Police Department for 21 years as a police officer and a detective. He was a member of Bloomingdale Baptist Church. He enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts.

Norma Ruth Price Sampson, 59, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord Friday May 31, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center.

A native of Scott County, and graduate of Gate City High School, she has lived in this area all her life.

She attended Christ Church in Lynn Garden. She enjoyed interior and exterior decorating and making homes beautiful; especially through gardening. Norma loved to shop and she very much enjoyed the ocean.

HILTONS, Va. - Elder Roy Lee Sampson, 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a long illness, late Saturday evening (July 1, 2006) while at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born on April 7, 1924, a son of the late Clayton F. and Amanda McDavid Sampson of Scott County, Va. He was a brick mason by trade. He was a longtime preacher having spent most of his time at the Hiltons Freewill Baptist Church (now known as Heritage Baptist Church), the Stoney Point Church and he established and pastored the Independent True Gospel Church. He was a true man of God and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of over 40 years, Kathryn Cole Sampson who passed away in 1988; children, Tommy Sampson and two infant children; five brothers; six sisters; a son-in-law, Charles Neeley; and a step-daughter, Debbie Vanzant Johnson.

Mr. Sampson was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, enjoyed fishing and sharing with his family and friends things about the Bible. He was a veteran of World War II.

RIVERVIEW, Fla. – Claudia Lane Sams, 94, 10913 Riverview Drive, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Scott County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Marion Joseph and Cordelia Hale Lane.

She was a graduate of Gate City High School, Gate City, and King College, Bristol. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Bristol school system and the Carter County school system. Mrs Sams had lived in Florida for the past six years. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. She was instrumental in starting the kindergarten program of the church.

Mrs. Sams was preceded in death by her husband, William E. "Jack" Sams; a daughter, Ginny Lane Sams in 1961; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a son William E. Sams III, Riverview; a grandson, William E. Sams IV, Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, in the East Hills Cemetery, Bristol Tennessee, with the Rev. Dwight Basham officiating.

Woodrow W. Sams, 36, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday [ 10/7/1948 ] in a Knoxville hospital after an illness of one year.

He had lived at 2021 Bristol Highway and had made his home here 12 years, moving here from Morristown .  He was a plasterer by trade and was a member of Lodge 647, Operative Plasterers and Cement Finishers Association.

Survivors are his widow; three sons, Jerry, Ben and David; his parents, John Wesley Sams and Mrs. Stella Dickson, both of Kingsport; his grandparents, Mrs. Nannie Parvin of Kingsport; a sister, Mrs. R. E. Baucum, of Kingsport.

Edna Geneva (Lawson) Sanders

KINGSPORT - Edna Geneva Lawson Sanders, 88, of Outlook Pointe and formerly of Harris Avenue, went to be with the Lord Saturday (June 19, 2004) after an extended illness.

Edna was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 20, 1915 to the late Worley R. and Pearl Mae Willis Lawson. She moved to Kingsport at an early age where she lived the majority of her life.

She was a member of Mafair United Methodist Church and was active for many years in the WMU.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Clarence Bascom Sanders; brother, George Elmer Lawson; son-in-law, Glenn E. Sproles; and infant great-granddaughter, Ashley Lynn Skelton.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Sproles, Anna Ruth and John Little, and Patsy and Sam Clonce, all of Kingsport; granddaughters, Pam Cox, Chavela Gragg, Robbin Metcalf, all of Kingsport, and Andrea Edmondson of Elizabethton; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Cox, and one great-grandson, Lee Edmondson.

GATE CITY, Va. - Ezra Arlie (E. A.) Sanders, 90, of Moccasin Ave., went to be with the Lord Monday afternoon (March 14, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born April 7, 1914 in Scott County, Va., he was the son of the late John L. and Callie Carter Sanders. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Corp. with 38 years of service. He attended Speers Ferry Church as long as his health permitted. He was a life-time member of the Scott County Life Saving Crew, serving as chaplain for several years.

He was a loving husband, a wonderful father and grandfather, and was dearly loved and respected by his family and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years and mother of his children, Venus Flanary Sanders; second wife, Martha E. Sanders, a companion of 18 years; six brothers, Floyd, Bascom, Ken, Jack, Howard and Tom Sanders; and one sister, Valice Sanders.

Surviving are two daughters, Frankie and James Pearson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Jo and Roy Ripley of Kingsport; three sons, Johnny Sr. and Faye Sanders, Donald "Pete" Sanders and Leland and Michelle Sanders, all of Gate City; eight grandchildren, Johnny Sanders Jr., David Sanders, Michael Pearson, Jeff Sanders, Vickie Pierson, Michelle Repass, Jon Pierson and Steven Sanders; seven great-grandchildren, Amy Campbell, Heather Begley, Jarrod Sanders, Barrett Sanders, Kasey Repass, Jonathan Sanders and Courtney Sanders; one sister, Alice Carter of Ft. GATE CITY, Va. _ Hannah M. Sanders, 86, West Jackson Street, departed this life late Thursday (May 18, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a native of Scott County and a member of Starnes Bluff Evangelical Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kinley H. Sanders; parents, R.C. and Mary Flanary Lark; and three brothers and three sisters.

KINGSPORT - Hazel Hill Sanders, 70, died Thursday ( July 27, 2000 ) at Hillside Manor.

Born in Scott County on July 13, 1930 , she was the daughter of the late James Fredrick and Sally Elizabeth Owens Hill. She was retired from the Dietary Department of Holston Valley Medical Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie L. Hill; sisters, Estell Bishop, Easter Bishop, Mary Bishop, Mae McDavid and Velma Carter; and brothers, Loran Hill, Frank Hill and James Hill.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Bobby Darnell, Kingsport ; granddaughter, Amy Darnell Nelson and husband, Alan Nelson, Kingsport ; sister, Margaret Horton, Kingsport ; and several nieces and nephews.

WEBER CITY . Va. — Kenneth (Ken) C. Sanders, 48, of Roanoke, Va., who was formerly of Weber City, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning (June 20, 2011), at his mother’s home surrounded by his family following a brief battle with cancer.

He was raised in Fort Blackmore , Va. , and was saved on June 12, 1974 , at Starnes Bend Baptist Church . Ken graduated from Twin Springs High School in 1980 and Clinch Valley College in 1984. He worked for Wachovia Bank in Roanoke for the past 16 1 /2 years. He enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and especially to travel. He was preceded in death by his father, Kilby Sanders.

Ken Sanders is survived by his mother, Margie Pierson Sanders ( Weber City , Va. ); an aunt, several uncles, and cousins; his very special family, Aaron, Becky, Rosa, Emily, and Quintin Smith; along with many special friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home or friends may also call anytime at the residence of the mother, Margie Sanders.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Phil Hoskins and Pastor Travis Pierson officiating.

GATE CITY, Va. - Martha E. Sanders, 92, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning (Feb. 18, 2005) at Bristol Hospice House following an illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1912 in Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Ida Spivey Starnes. Mrs. Sanders was a homemaker and attended Speers Ferry Church as long as her health permitted.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bradley Hammonds; second husband, James Smith; one sister and brother-in-law, Maggie Owens and Lonnie Owens.

Surviving are her husband, E.A. Car Crashed Into Bridge Police Say

Companion Reported With Minor Injuries In Accident Saturday

A Kingsport man was killed while his companion escaped with minor injuries as a result of an automobile accident Saturday [11/19/1949] at 9:20 a.m. at Rotherwood Bridge on the Knoxville Highway.

Hubert L. Sandidge, 25, 927 Elizabeth Street, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Holston Valley Community Hospital, attendants said. Ray Roach, 360 Virgil Street, was released after treatment.

State Highway Patrolman Clarence Walker said Sandidge apparently lost control of his car and crashed into the bridge or a nearby embankment. The car, a late model, was totally wrecked, he said.

Investigation of the accident is continuing, another highway patrol officer said Saturday night, adding that more details would be available Sunday.

Hospital attendants said the direct cause of Sandidge's death has not been definitely determined. Dr. Henry S. Burem, who examined him at the hospital, said death apparently was caused by internal injuries as no serious external injuries were found.

Sandidge was born in Hawkins County and attended Church Hill High School, and for the past five years has lived in Kingsport. During the war, he served four years in the Army, three of them overseas with the 81st Infantry Division.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Perry Sandidge; a three year-old daughter, Shelia; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sandidge of Hawkins County: eight sisters, Mrs. Mary Lou Chapman, Mrs. Ruth Davidson, Mrs. Pearl Ford, Miss Bessie Sandidge and Miss Georgia Sandidge, all of Church Hill, Mrs. Zula Callahan of Jonesboro, Mrs. Naomi Roach of Kingsport and Mrs. Mable McConnell of Washington; two brothers, Paul of Kingsport and Henry of Church Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel with the Rev. W. R. Dillon officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery with military services conducted by Charles Dewitt Byrd Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Funeral services for Hubert Lee Sandidge, 25, who was killed in a car wreck at Rotherwood Saturday morning [11/19/1949], will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel.

Mr. Sandidge served four years in the Army, three of them overseas with the Eighty-First Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart, five Combat Stars, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

The body was removed to the home, 927 Elizabeth Street, Monday morning.

Loretta Catherine Sarber, 87, of Kingsport, TN passed away on Wednesday, May 2 , 2012 at her home after a lengthy illness.

Born on August 22, 1924 in Rye Cove, VA, Mrs. Sarber was retired from the Kingsport City School System with over 20 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Davidson and Vinia Jones Davidson.

She is survived by the love of her life for 62 years, Steve Sarber, Jr.; special family, Emory and Stella Kern, Duffield, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her two loving canine friends, Rowdy and Molly.

ROGERSVILLE - Ronald Lee Sims "Buddy'', 66, went for his reunion with his family and God Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at his residence following an extended illness of COPD caused from smoking.

He was a member of Walker Fork Missionary Baptist Church in Sullivan Gardens and retired from Pet Dairy in Kingsport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva and Ruth Sims; sister, Emma Ruth Salyers; and niece, Donna Doughtey.

CHURCH HILL - Robert Perry "Bobby" Sivert, 61, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2007) at Rogersville Care & Rehab. Center in Rogersville.

He was born in Sullivan County on Dec. 14, 1945 and was the son of the late Charles C. Sivert and Dorothy Howard Sivert. He was previously employed with Hawkins County Press and had served as a Master Mason with Clay Lodge #386 in Church Hill, TN. Bobby loved and enjoyed his horses, Harley Davidsons, and all his family.

Mr. Sivert was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Church Hill.

DERBY, Va. — Nancy Qualls Sizemore, 87, passed peacefully and went to be with her Heavenly Father Wednesday (March 18, 2009).

She was a lifetime member of the Stonega Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two infant children; her husband, Robert Daniel Sizemore; two daughters, Delores Kegley and Janet Addington; son, Kenneth "Buddy" Sizemore.

Nancy is survived by two daughters, Patsy Snodgrass of Chesterfield, Va., Lannis Zirkle of Richmond, Va.; son, Bruce Sizemore of Derby, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, J.D. Qualls of Pattonsville, Va., Edward Qualls of Pattonsville, Va.; two sisters, Mabel Qualls of Pattonsville, Va., Imogene Jennings of Manville, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

CHURCH HILL - Selma S. Shoemaker, 80, passed away Monday night (Feb. 7, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following an illness.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was a longtime teacher in the Hawkins County School System, serving at Church Hill High, Volunteer High, Church Hill Elementary, and Carter's Valley Elementary schools, and earlier at Cowan's Branch School in Scott County, Va. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honorary society of women educators, having served as president of the local chapter.

She was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County, a dedicated educator, and a woman of deep faith, with the gift of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; her parents, Sam and Fayenettie Shipley; and her sister, Mary B. Blevins of Abingdon.

She is survived by her three children, Larry Shoemaker and wife Peggy of Atlanta, Ga., Anne McNutt and husband Tom of Hilton Head, S.C., and Lynn Shoemaker and wife Peggy of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Patrick Shoemaker, Hal and Anneliese Shoemaker, Tami S. and Chris Fitzpatrick, all of Atlanta, Thomas McNutt, of Washington, D.C., Jonathan Shoemaker of Crested Butte, Colo., and Jamie Shoemaker of Knoxville; four great-grandchildren, Kevin, Connor, and Carson Fitzpatrick and Brandon Shoemaker, all of Atlanta; two sisters, Aldameda Landiss of Nashville, and Beulah Bellamy of Church Hill; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews also survive.

Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Bill Kendrick will conduct the services, with participation from Rev. Daryl Crouch.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Mamie Lane Shupe, 94, passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2013), at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home in Duffield, Va.

She was a member of the Big Springs Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Shupe; infant children, Lois and Gary; her parents, Bill and Alverta (Flanary) Lane; siblings, Howard Lane, Ruby Ayers, Margaret Slagle and Wilma Safewright.

Surviving are one son, Doug (Sandra) Shupe; one daughter, Jeanette (John) Quillin; four grandchildren, Jennifer Garrison, Mark Quillin, Patrick Shupe and Brian Shupe; great-grandchildren, Trey, Tyler and Noah Garrison, Lauren, Hollie and Rachel Quillin, Hunter Shupe, Lexie and Leah Shupe. BURLINGTON N.C. — Mrs. Elizabeth Strong Simmons, 85, a resident of the Twin Lakes Center, and formerly of Springfield, Va., died at the Hospice Home in Burlington on Friday ( June 26, 2009 ) at 7:14 p.m.

A native of Pikes County., Ky., she was wife of the late Thomas Haskell Simmons and daughter of the late Nathaniel Strong and Sarah Bowser Strong. She was retired from the Northern Virginia Bank, a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion.

Including her husband and parents, she was preceded in death, by two sisters, Gladys Barger and Iva Castle; and three brothers, Charles Strong, Ernest Strong and Harold Strong.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Simmons Wilson and husband, Butch of Burlington and Debra Simmons McCaa of Lorton, Va.; two sons, Gary Michael Simmons and wife, Kathryn of Annandale, Va., and Thomas Mack Simmons and wife, Ada of Bloomington, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Ed Wilson (Sybil), Brian Wilson, Jonathan Simmons (Christi), Joshua Simmons (Rachel), Erin Erwin (Wesley), Sarah Booth, Stephanie Greene (Sean) and Meghan McCaa; and six great-grandchildren.

KINGSPORT — Mr. Bernard L. Skeens, 60, Kingsport, passed away, Saturday (Aug. 23, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Skeens was born in Russell County, Va. on Sept. 4, 1947, a son of Ethel Lena Kiser Skeens and the late Frank Leonard Skeens.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and was retired from AFG Glass Plant.

In addition to his father, Frank L. Skeens, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Glynn Skeens and Earnest Dean Skeens.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville.

GATE CITY, Va. — Paul Skeens, 63, died on June 9, 2009, at his residence.

He was born in Scott County, June 8, 1946, to the late Charlie Skeens, July 1993, and Lona Skeens in 1998.

Mr. Skeens drove a school bus for 32 years for the Scott County School System. He loved riding and working with his horses.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Regina Kay Skeens, August 1976; sister, Thelma Williams, October 2003; father-in-law, Creed Farley, March 1993; brother-in-law, Larry Farley, March 1993; sister-in-law, Melinda Rhoton, August 2005.

KINGSPORT - Everette Eugene Shelton, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday ( Nov. 4, 2001 ) at his home.

Everette was born in Virginia on Aug. 16, 1926, a son of the late Mary Frances Light.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Kingsport Iron and Metal Company after 45 years of service.

He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Shelton.

Geraline Carico “Jeanne” Shelton, 75, of Gate City, went to be with the Lord, Sunday February 2, 2014 at Indian Path Medical Center.

A 1956 graduate of Ketron High School, Jeanne was a former member of Temple Baptist Church and a longtime believer in Christ. The matriarch of her family, she traveled in her younger years and spent much of her life raising children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. A passionate soul by nature, Jeanne enjoyed trying new things and exploring various hobbies, including studying ancestry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Carico, infant daughter, Cynthia Durham; brother, Jerry Carico

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ronald Shelton; three daughters, Crystal Feagins, Larissa Dorton and Kimberly Shelton; one son, Bryan Shelton and wife Sheila; six grandchildren, Amber Demma, Britni Demma, Jackie Dorton and wife Regina, Corey Feagins and wife Heidi, Lakeisha Shelton and Kristina Shelton; two great grandchildren, Trinity Pearce and Skyler Lipski; one brother, J.D. DUFFIELD, Va. - Bernice Bowen Shepard, 74, of the Mabe community, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Tuesday morning (May 6, 2003) at her residence after a brief illness.

Born on Cliff Mountain in Scott County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Goldie Bowen and attended the Hills Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Eugene Shepard; a precious son, Tommy "Abe" Shepard; brothers, James Utah Bowen, Isaac Bowen Jr., Wesley Bowen, Crockett Bowen, Rufus Bowen, Emmitt Bowen and Curly Bowen; sisters, Bertha Jessee and Emily Page.

Surviving are sons, Bobby and wife Nancy Shepard of Duffield, Jerry and wife Rachel Shepard of Duffield; daughters, Janet and husband Johnny Roach of Clinchport, Jean and husband Kenny Johnson of Church Hill; brother, Kenneth Bowen of Duffield; grandchildren, Steven Roach, April Shepard Stipes and husband Stacy, Andrew Shepard, Nathan McNew and Kashmir Shepard; great-granddaughter, Ashton Stipes; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all their wonderful friends, relatives, ministers and hospice nurses for their kindness, prayers and support during this difficult time.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bernice's memory to Wellmont Hospice.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joe Hill officiating.

Music will be provided by the Mabe Chapel Quartet.

Burial will follow in the Shepard-Bowen Cemetery in the Mabe community.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

DUFFIELD, Va. — Tom Shepard, 71, of Duffield, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born Aug. 29, 1936, in Scott County, Va., he was the son of the late Charlie and Ann Shepard. Tom was retired from Eastman Kodak.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry (Smiley) Shepard; and a brother, Eugene Shepard.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Grim Shepard of the home; daughters, Renee Carter and husband, Carroll of Kingsport, Rhonda Quillen and husband, Chris of Gate City; four grandchildren, Holly and Austin Carter, Rebecca and Logan Shepard; two sisters, Joan Jessee and Peggy Watts; two brothers, Charlie K. Shepard and wife, Linda and Billy Shepard, all of Duffield; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Scott County Funeral Home, 2060 US Hwy. 23N, Weber City, Va.

A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Roger Herron officiating.

Music will be provided by David Dillon, Tara Dillon and Garry Hood.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Shepard-Bowen Cemetery, Mabe, Va., with Rev. Joe Hill officiating.

Pallbearers will be Junior Hill, Bob Shepard, Jerry Shepard, Mark Shepard, Scotty Shepard, James Watts and Randy Watts.

BLACKWATER, Va. — Larry Edward "Smiley" Shepard, 48, of Blackwater, passed away Thursday (April 17, 2008) at his home.

He was a member of the Kaylors Chapel Church and was employed at Eastman for over 30 years.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sheri Lyn Shepard of Fairview, Va.; his children, Rebecca Leann and Logan "Smiley" Shepard of the home; parents, Claude and Evelyn Shepard of Mabe, Va.; sisters, Renee Carter and her husband, Carroll of Kingsport, Rhonda Quillen and her husband, Chris of Gate City, Va.; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Carrie Horton; nieces, Paige Horton and Holly Carter; nephews, Peyton Horton, Austin Carter, Cameron, Austin, Noah and Jordon Shelton; several aunts and uncles and a host of friends.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8 p.m. with the Rev. David Kern and Evangelist Kenneth Neeley officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Shepard-Bowen Cemetery in Mabe, Va. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Quillen, Carroll Carter, Rickey Horton, Tony Shelton Carl Cobb, James (Bugs) Watts Jr. and Phillip Gibson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Crew #1 of Eastman.

SHELBY, N.C. - Mrs. Betty Frances Smith Shipley, 89, 213 Ware Street, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2003) at home.

Born in Plano, Texas, she was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Weber City, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Kincheloe Smith; her husband of 46 years, George Hubert Shipley; a brother, Ralph Smith; and a sister, Hazel Smith.

Surviving are two sons, George Shipley and wife Libby of Shelby, N.C., David Shipley and wife Belinda of Mooresville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jeff Shipley and wife Rene of Gaffney, Jon Shipley of New York City, Jamie Shipley and wife Tammy of Charlotte, Missy Steel of Shelby and Abigail Shipley of Mooresville; great-grandchildren, Clay and Dalton Shipley, and Donald Steel; one brother, George R. Smith of Linville, N.C.

GRAY - Frank Shipley Sr., 81, of Gray, passed away unexpectedly on Friday (Dec. 16, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a graduate of Sullivan High School Class of 43. Mr. Shipley served as a medic with the U.S. Army throughout World War II in the 106th Infantry Division. He worked for Pet Dairy for more than 50 years.

Frank was a good and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved woodworking, gardening, and traveling, and he always had a joke to tell.

Mr. Shipley attended Tri-Cities Baptist Church.

His parents, Sidney and Mary Shipley; sister, Ruth Slaughter; and brother, Vance Shipley preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby Shipley of the home; one daughter, Susan Leeper of Gray; two sons, Phillip Shipley and wife, Jenny of Hilton Head, S.C., Jim Shipley and wife, Ruth of Gray; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Willard Shipley of Church Hill, Neil Shipley and wife, Lolita of Kingsport, Sid Shipley and wife, Pauline of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Elmer Shipley and wife, Charlene of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home with Associate Pastor Gene Mermilliod officiating.

Entombment services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum with military rites held by the American Legion Post No. 3/265.
