"John Lewis, eldest son of Colonel Charles Lewis of The Byrd
moved to Pittsylvie County, where his will was probated 21 July
1794. He married his cousin Jane Lewis, daughter of his uncle,
Robert Lewis of Albemarle (and Jane Meriwethr, his wife) and
widow of Captain Thomas Meriwether. Issue named in his will,
three sons and three daughters:
"About 1729 he went with his parents to their new home at "The
Byrd", where the remainder of his childhood years was
spent"....It is unfortunately not possible to discover much
about the adult life of John Lewis until he reached his fortieth
year." (page 301 of source). John & Jane were 1st cousins. They
made their home in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. "On February 9,
1770 John Lewis acquired a patent for 1146 acres of land in
Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and an Act (Hening, Vol, 8, Pp
478-480) passed later in the year discloses that he immediately
removed to Pittsylvania with his family. This Act also removed
from the Tye River land the entail which had been transferred
there from "Chemokins", and settled the entail upon the new
estate in Pittsylvania County; the stated reason for the
transfer of the entail was in order that the sale of Tye River
lands might permit John Lewis to provide for his younger
children. In Pittsylvania County this John Lewis was a near
neighbor of John Lewis, oldest son of Col. Robert Lewis of
Belvoir, who had settled on the Dan River in Halifax County some
years earlier. Not only were these two men of the name John
Lewis first cousins, named for their paternal grandfather, but
they were also brother-in-law through the marriage of John Lewis
of Pittsylvania. In view of their proximity it became necessary
to distinguish locally between the two, and distinctive
designations were accordingly appended to their names. This John
Lewis, son of Col. Charles Lewis of The Byrd, became known as
John Lewis (Byrd), and his name appears in that form in the
records of Pittsylvania; his cousin and brother-in-law became
known about the same time as John Lewis (Mountain". (page 303 of
source).
