My Abraham Durham was the administrator of the estate of Samuel
Davis Durham in Greene County, Georgia, in 1800. These two
Durham men and their families obviously knew each other, but
this Abraham Durham was not the father of Samuel David Durham as
some researchers have reported.

Charles McConnell
19 Downshire Gardens
Carrickfergus,
Co. Antrim
Northern Ireland
BT38 7LW "
I am at present engaged in writing a history entitled "The
McConnells of Ulster". The name McConnell is the anglicised
version of the gaelic McDonnell, the great Scottish clan. The
earliest use of the name McConnell I have discovered was used in
a letter written in english to King Henry VIII in 1534 referring
to James McDonnell. As the gaelic speaking McDonnells from the
Western Isles colonised Co.Antrim they came more and more into
contact with the English during the Plantation who registered
them in leases and deeds as McConnell instead of McDonnell.
Therefore the name McConnell can be said to be an Ulster name
except for a small pocket in Ayrshire, Scotland.
I have been tracing McConnells through the Anglo-Scottish wars,
the Plantation of Ulster and the various wars and rebellions in
Ireland, also the McConnell population in Ulster up to the year
1900.
As I have almost covered th Province of Ulster, my next task is
to extend overseas to those McConnells who emigrated to Canada,
U.S.A., Australia etc.I am writing to each of the American
states to discover what McConnells settled there, and who took
part in the American Revolution and Civil War.

Subject: Re: McConnell
Josephine, I can use all the help I can get with the McConnells
before William. I don't know his parents or siblings. He was
born about 1781 in Abbeville Dist. S.C. I had found a William
and a Hugh McConnell in Old 96 Dist. censuses earlier and
thought they might be kin but know nothing for sure. I next
find William in Alabama. He received a land grant for service
in Capt. Coleman's Co. Georgia Vol., Creek War. In Washington
Co. AL he married Martha Caller, daughter of James Caller of
Virginia and Winifred (Duke) of Warrenton, NC. Martha, born 1806
in AL. William and Martha had children: Green Duke
McConnell--1834, John Jefferson McConnell--1836; Nathaniel
Julius Mc Connell--1839. They were found in the census in
either Clarke or Wilcox Cos., AL. The sons were in the same
unit 23rd Alabama Infantry, Co. K. Green Duke was a Captain.
After the war John and Nathaniel went to Texas. Green Duke died
before 1880. His wife and children were in Texas at the time of
the 1900 census.
I notice that you are a Lindsay. Do you have any connection to
Madison/Mattison in South Carolina ( Abbeville)? My 3x
greatgrandfather had a brother named LeRoy Ware Mattison/Madison
married a Rebecca ? and Strother N. married an Elizabeth ? his
first wife. The family was living in Abbeville or Lauren Co.
Strother is my line. After his first wife died either in S.C.or
AL he married Catherine Sample in Marengo Co. AL. in 1824. We
have no idea what happened to the brother LeRoy who was born in
Abbeville, SC on March 2, 1802. Reference has been made that
his wife's name might have been Lindsay. If you have any
information for me it will be much appreciated. Sorry I can't
go back any further with the McConnells. Thanks. Wynell
Madison Patton
I have McConnells on my grandmother's side who appear to be the
same brothers and one sister my grandfather descended from, who
are mentioned in various Kingstree wills. Their (g?)nieces are
very numerous and I'm fairly sure there's more McConnell in me
than any other name, but it's very hard to document.
I didn't know you wanted to list the Tuttles on your site - I
gave you a very abridged file if so. The site will be huge if
all your cousins are eventually included. You should see the
book 'The Hugenot Millers' and another on the Salters just out
(I haven't got my copy of that one yet). I am related to many
of the people mentioned in those books and I reckon you would be
too!
