James Taylor I, called ‘James the First,' immigrant, was born
about 1615 or 1616 at the ancestral home, Pennington Castle,
which was located about twenty miles from Carlisle, England. He
came to America and Virginia in 1635.
"This tablet given by Jaquelin P. Taylor, seventh in descent,
June 1933." A short biography of James Taylor, filled with the
errors alluded to above, is contained in Carte's The Forebearers
and Descendants of William Taylor and Mahala Cromwell:
Carlisle from whence James Taylor sailed to America in 1635 was
but twenty miles from Pennington Castle, ENG.
"He was descended from the Earl of Hare, Carlisle, England, and
established ‘Hare Forest' in Virginia. In America he settled on
the Chesapeake Bay, between York (James) and the North rivers."
The first James Taylor who came to America in 1635 was Dr. James
Taylor probably an uncle to our James Taylor. Dr. James
Taylor, called Govenor and Councilman, was born in Egland in
1615 and came to America in 1635. He married Elizabeth
Underwood b. 1632 and died 1673. Dr James Taylor's estate was
settled March 26, 1654. He died 1655.
On March 26, 1654 Edward Skynner presented a petition to the
Commonwealth of England charging that Dr. James Taylor of Surry
County, "chyrugeon", "hath lived in the loathsome sin of
adultery with his late servant Ursula Kettel and that she was
delivered of a bastard child the 18 October, last past". Ursula
Kettle made deposition and Elizabeth, wife of James Taylor,
filed for divorce. She appealed to the court that she be
allowed to "goe live at her mother's house and have considerable
maintenance out of his estate". Further details of her appeal
show that she was afraid to live with James for fear of being
maimed or killed.
Dr. James Taylor and Ursula Kettle bore a son James Taylor Jr.
James Jr. married Elizabeth Brown 1665, widow of William Brown.
On November 6, 1655 Dr. Thomas Culmer, Chyrugon, purchased the
house and practice of Dr. Taylor.

[Comment: Note that the above information, especially the
dates, seems to be referring to Dr. James Taylor, likely uncle
of our James. Researchers beware!]
