Message Board Post: "The maiden name of Roxanna DAWS who is
listed as 2nd wife of
James Monroe SANDIDGE is believed to be Roxanna JONES.
Roxanna JONES (parents not yet identified) was born on 8 Jan
1837 in Louisiana. [Source: Tombstone inscription Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery, Columbia, Caldwell Parish, LA]
She married L M (Louis sometimes spelled Lewis Monroe) DAWS ca.
1858 (marriage record
not yet located). The DAWS surname is sometimes spelled DAWES.
L M Daws and wife, Roxanna, appear in the 1870 US Census of
Caldwell Parish, La. (Ward 5), p.3, dwelling 20, family 20,
lines 14-18, National Archives Microfilm M593, Reel 509
Children listed in the 1870 Census:
(1) Alitia Elizabeth DAWS (my husband's great-grandmother)
(b. 20 Oct 1859 in Caldwell Parish, LA; m. 12 Nov 1874 in
Caldwell Parish,
LA to Rev. Oscar Ballou HUNDLEY; d. 15 May 1923 in San Leandro,
CA)
(2) Leander L DAWS (b. ca. 1866 - listed as age 4 in the 1870
census, and
(3) Charles A Daws (b. ca. 1868 - listed as age 2 in the 1870
Census.
Roxanna's first husband, L M DAWS, died 5 Oct 1878 and was
buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Columbia, Caldwell Parish, LA.
His tombstone indicates that he was born 1 Jan 1837 and the 1870
census indicated he was born in Mississippi.
After Louis DAWS died, Roxanna married James M. Sandige on 16
May 1880 in Caldwell
Parish, LA.
The 1880 Census of Caldwell Parish shows Roxanna, age 44, as the
wife of James M. Sandige, age 40. A closer examination of the
family of James Sandige in this census shows a son, Charles A.
Sandige, age 13, who is most likely James' son by a previous
marriage because Charles' mother's birthplace is given as
Georgia. From the 1880 census record several other DAWS children
are identified and looking a few families above that of the
James Sandige family, you will find Oscar HUNDLEY with wife,
Alitia E. (this is Alitia Elizabeth DAWS, dau. of L M DAWS and
Roxanna).
Within James SANDIGE's family the younger DAWS children are
clearly listed as stepchildren
of the Head of the household. They are:
(1) Leander L DAWS, age 14 (who appeared in the 1870 Census with
his birth parents)
(2) Charlie A DAWS, age 12 (who also appeared in the 1870
Census), and
(3) Ruth DAWS, age 9 (married Rev. Cicero E MEREDITH)
(4) Dott DAWS, age 8 (married Jerome SIMMONS)
(5) Raymond F. DAWS, age 6
(6) Eva M DAWS, age 4 (married Henry J LEA)
Roxanna died 9 Apr 1916 and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
in Columbia, Caldwell Parish, LA.
From the data in your posting, a new question arises given the
death date/place shown for James Monroe SANDIGE and the
approximate date/place given for the marriage to his 3rd wife,
Nancy Jane HUTCHINSON. Did James and Roxanna separate and/or
divorce? Roxana outlived James by several years and was buried
(presumably) with her first husband, Louis DAWS and with the
name DAWS, not SANDIGE. So clearly there are some discrepancies
that need resolving ...
I've not yet searched the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Roxanne so
locating her in those censuses may provide additional clues...
Additionally, the Louisiana Confederate Pension Application
Record Index lists her first husband, Louis M. DAWES, and
incorrectly lists her maiden name as "JORIES".
Another source, the BLM Land Patents Database
at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/ show that three
members of the L M DAWS family received land patents: Lewis M
Daws on 1 Sep 1860; Roxanna DAWS on 16 Nov 1898; and their son,
Charles A DAWS on 30 DEC 1902.
I hope the information provided above is of use to you. Please
contact me if you'd like to exchange additional information."
