Notes

Parke in all their names was necessary for inheirtance, since an old will stated that any descendent of the Custis family could not inherit family money unless the name Parke was included. Daniel, had a very wealthy maternal grandfather who insisted on that clause in his will since his only child had been a daughter and he wanted to perpetuate his last name.

They had four children, two died in infancy. John Parke, called "Jacky" and Martha, called "Patsy" were their two surviving children. In 1757, when Martha was twenty-six, Daniel Parke Custis died after a brief illness. Jacky was three and Patsy was less than a year old.
