Mother: Martha "Patsy" GENTRY |
Commonly called Uncle Jo and Aunt Polly, moved from Hawkins
County, TN with their 5 children in 1844, following Uncle Jo's
father, George, to purchase better and more fertile farmland
than the hilly land of northeast Tennessee. // Joseph purchased
his first 40 acres of land for $80.00 from Hezekiah Horton
10/18/1847. The lay of land was in the north half of the east
half of the southeast quarter of Section Four, Township Seven,
Range Nine more commonly known as the old "Willie Gaston Place,"
about 2 miles north of Mt. Hope, Lawrence County, Alabama. He
acquired over a section of land over the years, which consisted
of some 1600 to 1700 acres. He also donated the property
adjacent to the home place for the church site of the Mt. Hope
Christian Church and Smith Cemetery. The church was later moved
to Mt. Hope and became the first Mt. Hope Church of Christ.
Smith Cemetery still exists in its original location on north
Mt. Hope Road. (Book: page 79; Smith Legacy Unveiled by Carl
Stewart Smith, Jr.)
Buried: Jan 18, 1878 Smith Cemetery, Mt. Hope, Lawrence Co.,
Alabama. A large marker for Joseph and Polly erected by some of
the later generations.
OBITUARY (from Book: Smith Legacy Unveiled) The Moulton
Advertiser, Thursday, 12/28/1878. "DIED" ; At his residence near
Mt. Hope, Alabama, on Jan 18, 1878, JOSEPH Smith, in the 63rd
year of his age. // He leaves a widow, sons, daughters, and
numerous friends to mourn their loss. Mr. Smith like other men,
had his foibles, yet was a kind husband, an affectionate father,
and grappled his friends to his soul as with hooks of steel. His
afflictions while upon earth were great, yet he bore them
without a murmur. // No one ever called upon him in distress,
without receiving as prompt assistance as his ability would
justify. // Uncle Joe, as he was familiarly called, will long be
remembered by the young people for the good and wholesome advice
given them and will be greatly missed by the whole community,
especially the widows and orphans. Peace be to ashes.
1870: Census: Alabama: Stephen McKee age 18, born ca. 1852

[Janelle & Dale Collier 1982] Book in Tennessee Library on the
Skelton line, goes back to 1215 in England. Sent a picture of
Joseph & Polly taken off a picture in a relatives home in Mt.
Hope, Alabama. Have a copy of will dated Jul 12, 1877 probate
