Another researcher, Smith Family TN AL TX by Dorthy Wheeler
Williams, on Gencircles.com has his wife as Margaret Skelton b
abt 1809 in TN, m. abt 1832; she cannot be the mother of George.
She has the only file on GenCircles with Alexander Smith, father
of George W. Smith, wife Patsy Gentry. The rest all have
William Smith and Elizabeth Ridley but not this George,
different set of children and there is dispute on the parents of
this William. Some say Meriwether Smith some say Peter Smith of
NC.
"Janelle & Dale Collier; will and land grants (1795) North
Carolina [DLW has a copy]. Alexander Smith had received grants
in Tennessee Territoy in the 1790s.
NOTE: [Janelle & Dale Collier] "When we were in Hawkins County
we found the valley they lived in and the church were many
Smiths are buried and the people there are not very interested
in their ancestors. We visited some Smiths and Skeltons but they
knew nothing of their past except everyone had grown up there.
It is really beautiful mountainous country -- still grow and
store tobacco in old, old barns and now people are beginning to
restore the log cabins and they are becoming valuable property.
It is in the north east part of the state and just a few miles
on to the Virginia line."
