BRISCOE, WILSON posted by Jim Kuethe on Thursday, April 22, 1999

I seek any information available about the ownership of a 1700s or very early 1800s Somerset Co. estate/plantation known as "Calcutta." The name BRISCOE may be associated with it. Thank you for considering this query.

BRISCOE posted by John C. Lyon on Saturday, April 24, 1999

A tract of land called "Calcutta" was patented on 7 Jun 1754 by Henry Waggaman, one of the regular Justices of Somerset. It is described in original Certificate (Patented) # 396 at the Maryland State Archives and documented in Liber BC&GS#4 folio 67 (cert) and BC&GS#3 folio 47 (patent). It was defined as 539.5 acres (but is actually somewhat smaller), and was a resurvey from earlier tracts: parts of "Munsley", "Vulcan's Vineyard", "Mill Lot", "Nicholson's Mistake" and "Venables' Mistake". Its first boundary was an original bounder of the tract "Bellean", patented to Robert Ridgely on 1 Mar 1672/3 (O.S.), itself a resurvey and renaming of "Briscoe's Lott" ("Bellean" is described in Liber 17 folio 421, but I am not aware of a citation for "Briscoe's Lott" itself). "Bellean" bordered "Calcutta" variously, and its first bounder was at the mouth of what was called Briscoe's Branch into the north side of the Wicomico River. This is in present-day Wicomico County a bit to the east of the mouth of Rockawalking Creek and just to the west of Salisbury.

ADAMS, FENWICK, HALL, LANDON, PEARSON, TAYLOR posted by Ronald E. Pearson on Wednesday, April 28, 1999

I am looking for information on Edward PEARSON, my great great grandfather. He is listed in the 1880 Census in District 6 Fairmount. Also, I'd like anything on his three sons and a daughter, John E., Samuel, Dowe, and Belle. I do know that John married Rose HALL and Samuel married Ida or Ada LANDON and later Nettie V. ADAMS. Samuel had one known child with his first wife, Marie T. PEARSON (FENWICK). His only other known child was with Nettie, named Samuel Joseph. Samuel Sr. died 28 July 1898, three months before his son was born. Is there a PEARSON Bible out there somewhere? I have Nettie ADAMS' Bible with dates back to 1841. I didn't see Edward listed in the 1850 census, but also did not see any listings from the Fairmount district. Samuel J. married Elizabeth TAYLOR, daughter of Samuel and ? Taylor. Any information will be appreciated.
