John Mathers (4608), his wife and daughter-in-law were listed together at South Culsh, Auchredy Parish on the List of Pollable Persons in Aberdeenshire 1696. His son, Andrew (4610) was probably the servant to Alexander Couper, tennent, at Maynes of Culsh, just two entries previous. John was listed twice, as tennant and as resident. The entries read as follows: "The hundreth pairt of the valuatione, payable be the tennents, is 4 merks ... £2, 13s., 4p. ..... John Mathers, in South Culsh, his pairt thereof, with the generall poll is ...£1, 0s., 0p.", and;
"John Mathers, polled as tennent, payes for Elspet Gib, his wife... 6s., 0p."
"Hellen Dune, his daughter-in-law ... 6s., 0p."2

Alexander Cheyne and John Mathers were named Godfathers at the Christening of Alexander Dun, 16 May 1705, at Whitebogs, in New Deer Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of New Deer, 1684-1726, Page 135, "May: 15: 1705: Said day Wm. Dun (3175) in Whytebog had a Son brought forth by his wife Elizabeth Chyne (3173) & was baptized May: 16: named Alex'r (3176), Godfathers Alex'r Chyne (756) in Corbfhill & John Mathers (4608) in Culfh”..3

Alexander Cheyne and John Mathers were named Godfathers at the Christening of Jean Dun, 18 June 1706, at Whitebogs, in New Deer Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of New Deer, 1684-1726, Page 142, "June 16 1706 The said day William Dun(3175) in Whyt bog had a daughter brought forth by his wife (3173) and baptized June 18 named Jean (3199), Godfathers Alex'r Cheyn (756) in the parish of Montquhiter and John Mathers (4608) in Culfh, Godmothers Joan Urquhart (760) in the parish of Montquhiter and Elspet Gib (4609) in Culfh”..4
