     John MacIntosh was born, 14 October 1825, in Aberdour Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1,2

John MacIntosh was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 18 December 1825, at Cook Bog, in Aberdour Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Aberdour, 1820-1854, "18 Dec'r 1825 Wm. MacIntosh in Cook Bog had a Son baptized 18th Dec'r 1825 Named John. Witnefses John Cheyne (543) & James Man both there".3

John McIntosh was listed on the 1851 Scotland Census at 408 Parliamentary Road, in Glasgow, Saint David's Parish, Lanark, Scotland. He was listed as a lodger in the household of George White, engineer and millwright. He was 25 years of age, born in Aberdour Parish and a student.4

John C. MacIntosh married Jane Hogg 9 July 1856, in accordance with the procedures of the Free Church of Scotland, after banns, at 100 Saint George Road, in Glasgow, Blythswood Parish, Lanark, Scotland. He was 30 years old, a batchelor, a minister of the Independent Church and resided at Saint George Street, Saint Andrews, Fife. His parents were confirmed to be as recorded herein. The ceremony was officiated by Robert Buchanan, Minister of the Free Church, Glasgow and witnessed by John Thomson, Advocate in Aberdeen and one other person.5,6,7

John MacIntosh was in the household of William MacIntosh and his wife, Elizabeth MacIntosh, and listed as brother on the 1861 Scotland Census, at 61 High Street, in New Pitsligo, Tyrie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was listed as John C. Macintosh, a visitor, an independent minister, 35 years of age and born in Aberdeen (probably Aberdour Parish).1

Attached is an image of Reverend John Cheyne MacIntosh probably about 1872 in his study, in Port Elizabeth.8

"John Cheyne Macintosh, my great grandfather, after a brief spell in the grocery business, registered as a student at the University of Glasgow in 1850 pursuing the 'usual curriculum of classical, mathematical, and philosophical study'. The information on John Cheyne Macintosh and his family is from In Memoriam: The Rev. John Cheyne Macintosh, Minister of Pearson Street, Congregational Church, Port Elizabeth, Port Elizabeth: James Kemsley, 1888. At the same time he pursued theological studies through the Divinity Hall of the Congregational Union of Scotland. In 1855, having become a minister of the church and serving as locum tenens to a number of churches, he accepted a calling from the Congregational Church of St. Andrew's in St. Andrew's on the west coast of Scotland. In 1856 he married Jane Hogg, the daughter of a Glasgow Missionary. His brother William Cheyne, married Jane's sister Barbara on the same day in a double wedding and, interestingly, the four of them went on honeymoon together in Edinburgh.
