FatherWilliam Cheyne b. c 1610
This William Cheyn is the first Cheyne to be named in the Peterhead Parish Register of Baptisms. The Register was dated from 1668. His son William should have been born about 1674, but he was not listed. The first Cheyne entry is 22 Jul 1679. Perhaps, this William and his son came from elsewhere. Most Parish records were not kept at this time.
This William was found in the 1696 Poll, in Peterhead, page 570, identified as "younger" and a shoemaker. His wyfe was named Margaret Tait and "(no children pollable)." His father was not found. The next household above William was for William Daniel, also a shoemaker; this William Daniel and William Cheyn, younger, witnessed often together. William Daniel is also "younger," his father witnessed with William Cheyn, elder.
He may have witnessed the children of Alexander Cheyne, 19 Dec 1718, 7 Oct 1722 and 16 Jul 1725. If he did not, then they were witnessed by his son William.
