late family history the county of Culpepper in the state of
Virginia was at one time composed of very large area of land, it
became advisable to separate it into several counties, by
appointment George Washington (lieut) who later was elected
president of the United States, was sent to survey this
territory, which was later divided into six counties. at that
time he also suveyed and laid out town sites in all these
counties. in the county named Tappahancok, he laid out the town
of Washington and the land on which it was situated was donated
by George Calvert.
this is information is correct was printed from court records in
the Blue Ridge guide, a newspaper printed at Washington,
Virginia.
