John was a vestryman, St. Paul's Parish, King George County, Virginia. He was also justice, Stafford County, Virginia, 1745; and Prince William County, 1769 (A Genealogy of the Glassell Family). He was also sheriff for Stafford County in 1739. He is referred to as " Capt. John Hooe of Hooe's Ferry." His descendants are designated the "Barnesfield Hooes."
