His uncle, Gen. William Alexander Doniphan, was a hero of the
Mexican War.
Nelson was educated at Maysville Boys Academy and the U.S. Naval
Academy. He served in the Mexican War and was a naval officer at
the out break of the Civil War. When Nelson offered his services
to President Abraham Lincoln, he was sent to Kentucky to win
support for the Union cause. Camp Dick Robinson, which he
established in Garrard County, became a major recruiting
location.
On September 16, 1861, he was commissioned a Brigadier General
of volunteers. He fought at the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, and
Chattanooga. When Kentucky was invaded, Nelson was sent back to
the state to organize troops. He was wounded at the battle of
Richmond on August 30, 1862.
On September 29, 1862, Nelson, by then a major general, was shot
and killed at the Gait House in Louisville in a personal
disagreement with a fellow soldier, Jefferson Davis. In 1863,
Camp Nelson, named in his honor, was established in Jessamine
County; it became the principal Union recruiting and training
location for black soldiers in Kentucky.
Nelson was buried first in Louisville, then at Camp Nelson, and
finally in the Maysville Cemetery.
