The James Cheyne who became a Writer to the Signet probably was either James (830) son of James Cheyne and Marie Maitland or (4895) son of Robert Cheyne and Elizabeth Adamson.
The case for James (830) is that he was was from a family of wealth and many of his siblings also when to Edinburgh and were properious. For James (4652), he had a sister, Jean or Janet (6589), who married a Writer to the Signet, Alexander Hay. Their father was one of the Ministers in Edinburgh. If he was the correct James, his father was probably closely related to Alexander Cheyne (756).
