The said entry reads as follows: "In the same year (1570) Patrick Cheyne and two others had a quarrel with William and Patrick Annand, William being killed. We learn these particulars from a respite granted by the Crown on January 16th 1588.-'James by the grace of God, etc., etc., and by the law speciallie respittes Mr. Patrick Chene, Advocat in our Burgh of Abirdene, Alexander Gardine of Blackfurde, and John Chene son of Robert Chene in Coldwellis, for airt and pairt of the slaughter of umquhil William Annand and mutilation of Patrick Annand in Clayhills committit in the month of ___ the yeir of God 1570...to be onhurt, unharmit, unattachit, unarreistit, unfollowit, unpersewit, unvexit and undisturbit in thair persones and guidis...' by any of his Majesty's officers, lieges, or subjects".1
