Fauster, age 79, Awilda's mother, and Mary Warnock, age 77, identified as Augustus' aunt.⁶ Gus survived the death of his wife, Birticia (Foster) Yelton, on 25 September 1912.⁷ A. A. Elliott Riley Lanning married Nancy Yelton, daughter of William James Yelton and Edith Decker, on 29 December 1856 in Buncombe County, North Carolina.^2,3 E. R. Lanning, age 27 was listed as the head of a household in the 1860 Census of Buncombe County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Nancy Lanning, age 21, C. A. Lanning, age 1 and Jas. M. Lanning, age 3 months. E. reported owning no real estate, but had personal property worth $150.⁴ On 8 July 1862 he enlisted in Company C, 60th NC Infantry, as a private. He was absent sick on 29 October 1862, returning to duty about 15 November 1862. He was sick again on 5 March 1863, returning to duty about 15 July 1863. He appeared on muster rolls dated 15 November 1863 and 15 April 1864. He was taken prisoner on 15 May 1864 at Resaca, GA and imprisoned at Nashville, TN on 17 May 1864. On 21 May 1864 he was transferred to Louisville, KY, and then to the prison at Alton, IL on 25 May 1864. While he was imprisoned, he became very ill and was hospitalized on three separate occasions before dying. He died on 7 November 1864 in Alton, Illinois.²
