Charles Yelton was born on 1 November 1746 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.1

Charles Yelton married Amelia Ellis on 5 March 1769 in Stafford County, Virginia.2 On 27 Sept 1772, Charles joined Chopawamsic Baptist Church.3 On 11 February 1780 Charles witnessed a deed between Stephen Ashby and William Carr Virginia. Other witnesses were Charles Ewell, Isaac Harper, Elijah Bigbie, Bertrand Ewell, Thomas Chapman, Robert Overall, and William Jenkins.4 Charles Yelton appears in published versions of the personal property tax lists of Capt. Looney's company in Botetourt County, VA for the years 1783, 1784, 1785, and 1786. Capt. Looney's company was in an area that is now part of Craig County, between Johns Creek and Craigs Creek.5,6 Much of the information we have about the children and grandchildren of Charles Yelton comes from his family Bible. Here is a short description of the Bible and its provenance, and an explanation of how the family information was preserved, written by Lawrence E. Yelton of Cincinnati, Ohio (with some minor editorial changes and an additional note).

This Bible was purchased by Charles Yelton, Sr., Anno Domini - June 15th, 1803 - cost 2 pounds, 13 shillings, and 4 pence. The front page is missing. At the end of the Old Testament and preceding the Aprocryphia, is the following imprint: Joseph Charles, Printer, Philadelphia. The New Testament title page, has the following imprint: Philadelphia: Printed for Mathew Carey, no. 118, Market Street, October 27, 1802. (Note: this may be the same publisher as the “M. Carey & Son” listed on the title page of the Nancy (Taylor) Yelton Bible.) The title page of the concordance, has the following imprint: By John Brow, late minister of the Gospel at Haddington, in Scotland:------Thomas S. Manning, Printer. In the front of the Bible, ahead of the text of Genesis, is a list of subscribers; part of the list is missing, but several hundred names appear in the printed list.

The Bible is a large one, leather bound, with a buckskin cover over the leather binding. The outer covering was probably tanned on the farm, and is held in place by the edges being folded in and held with thread - the older thread seems to be linen, some resewing was done with black thread. The volume is 11 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches, and 3 3/4 inches thick.

Charles Yelton, Jr., bought the old Bible in 1818 at the sale and settlement of his father's estate; Charles Yelton, Snr., departed this life, July 2, 1817 Bourbon County, Ky. Charles Jr., paid $9.50 for the Bible. In the old Bible were the names of the 12 children of Charles Yelton and Amelia Ellis Yelton with the date of their births; also the names of Charles Yelton, Jr., and his wife, Amelia Gosney Yelton; they had 13 children, date of their births; also the names of of Amelia Yelton Buckner and her husband, Wm. Nicholas Buckner and their children. Charles Yelton, Snr., had the date of his mother's death; Isabel Hinson Yelton departed this life, Feb. 13, 1781, Stafford County, Va.

The old Bible was in the possession of Mrs L.M. Beerbower in 1939; given to her by her mother Amelia Yelton Buckner. Mrs. Beerbower loaned the Bible to Mr. Ed. E. Barton to copy the records from the Bible.

Universary of Kentucky     Mrs. M.C. Northcutt -1967. He appeared as the head of a household in the 1810 Census of Bourbon County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, 2 females 16-25, 2 males 16-25, 1 female 10-15, and 1 male 10-15. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Amelia Ellis, his sons, Daniel Yelton, Jesse Yelton and Samuel Yelton, his daughters, Nancy Yelton, Amelia Yelton and Isabel Yelton.7 Charles Yelton died on 2 July 1817 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.2

ChartsDescendants of William Yelton
RelationshipSon of James Yelton.
William Yelton was born circa 1757 in Stafford County, Virginia.1
In 1781, William enlisted as a private in Capt. Kilpatrick's Company in Col. William Darke's 4th Virginia Regiment. He was discharged at Point of York in Virginia in 1783, after participating in the siege of Little York (Yorktown).2

William Yelton married Sarah Mays, daughter of Robert Mays and Elizabeth Bolling, on 30 September 1784 in Amherst County, Virginia. The marriage was performed by Rev. Benjamin Coleman.3 William Yelton first appears in the personal property tax records of Amherst County in 1786, reporting 1 white male tithable, 1 horse, and 1 head of cattle. His last appearance is in 1800. At no time did he appear with more than one white male tithable.4 William Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male over 45, 1 female between 26 and 45, and 1 male between 16 and 26 (who does not appear in the 16-18 column and is therefore probably between 18 and 26). It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to William, his daughter, Elizabeth Yelton.
The census wasn't taken until late December, so that allows plenty of time for William to move from Iredell County in 1820, as he said in his pension application. Some of the entries appear to be crossed out, which makes it difficult to establish who was in the household.

In his pension application, dated 18 July 1820, William said that the only persons living in his household were his aged wife and his 27 year old daughter. There's no one in the 1820 census household corresponding to Sarah, yet she appears with William (apparently) in the 1830 Census. There is also an unidentified male between 18 and 26. William's sons are all accounted for elsewhere, and William swore under oath that only his wife and daughter were living with him.

Oddly enough, the crossed out entries may be a valuable clue. All the entries crossed out correspond to entries in the next household, that of Elizabeth Yelton. Evidently, the census taker thought this was all one household, but realized that he had made a mistake. That's an argument for William and Elizabeth being closely related, not just neighbors with the same surname. Elizabeth is most likely William's daughter-in-law, the widow of his son, William, since she's listed as the head of her household. She has 2 boys and 1 girl under the age of 10, and she herself is between 16 and 26.5 William Yelton applied for a pension on 18 July 1820 while living in Pendleton County, Kentucky, based on his service in the Revolutionary War..
State of Kentucky Pendleton Circuit Court July term 1820

William Yelton, a soldier of the Revolution, this day came into court and delivered in the following written declaration of his services with a schedule of his property thereto annexed, viz:

On this 18th day July 1820 personally appeared in open court, being a court of record by an act of the Gen'l Assembly of the state aforesaid, William Yelton aged 63 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the act of Congress of the 18th March 1818 and the 1st of May 1820, that he, the sd William Yelton enlisted for the term of three years on the day of 1781 in the state of Virginia, in the company commanded by Capt. Kilpatrick in the Regiment commanded by Col. Jos. Dark. the line of the State of Virginia or the continental establishment; that he continued to serve in the said corps until the day of 1783 when he was discharged from the said service at Point of York (?) in the State of Virginia, as a private soldier. That he was in the battle at the Siege of Little York in Va. and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his sd. services except the evidence of John Waller which is hereto annexed and in pursuance of the act of the 1st of May 1820 I do solemnly swear that I was a resident of the United States and the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary war, passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by subscribed (to wit)

The court is of opinion that the property contained in the above schedule is of the value of seventy four dollars & 50 cents & no more.

The deposition of James Yelton, aged 66 years, taken at the Clerk's Office in the town of Falmouth in the county of Pendleton and state of Kentucky on Tuesday the 5th day of February 1822, who being first duly sworn deposeth and saith that he is and has been ever since and prior to the year 1781 well acquainted with William Yelton (who is now an applicant for a pension in pursuance of the acts of the Congress of the United States of the 18th March 1818 and 1st May 1820) and that he has personal knowledge of the said William Yelton having been enlisted as a soldier in the service of the United States by John Waller in the year 1781 for the term of three years. That said William, in pursuance of said enlistment, marched and was absent from his place of residence in Va. until after the termination of the Revolutionary war and that during the period of his absence it was generally reputed and believed that sd. Wm. was engaged as a soldier on the continental establishment, in the service of the United States. That this deponent believed, at that time, and does yet verily believe that said William did actually join the army in the year 1781 and serve the United States in the capacity of a soldier in the R. War, in the Va. line, on the establishment aforesaid from some time early in the year 1781 (2 or 3 words I can't read) termination of the war and that sd. Wm. Yelton now and for near three years has been a resident of Pendleton County, Ky. And further this deponent saith not

I W. C. Kennett Clerk of the Court aforesaid do hereby certify that John Ellis J.P. whose signature appears to the foregoing certificate is and was at the time of signing the same, an acting Justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid duly commissioned and sworn and that as such full faith and credit is due and ought to be given to all his official acts and that said certificate is in due form of law. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand an office the seal of my office this fifth day of February A.D. 1822.2

William Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 60-70, 1 female 60-70, 1 female 10-15 and 1 male 10-15. The elderly woman is probably William's wife, Sarah. The two children are both too young to be children of William and Sarah. Perhaps they are grandchildren.6 He testified to the military service of James Yelton when the latter applied for a pension on 15 August 1833.7
William Yelton the Revolutionary War soldier died 5 Mar 1834 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. Apparently because he was a pensioner, his heirs are listed in the Pendleton County records. They are: James Yelton, Robert Yelton, Benjamin Yelton, Nancy Yelton (wife of Jonathan Cash), William Yelton Jr. (deceased, leaving Alexander Yelton, William Yelton, John Yelton, Cynthiana Yelton, and Elizabeth Yelton who married Clifton Love and was deceased leaving a daughter, Amarillis Love). William Yelton (III) and John Yelton are noted as being minors, as is Amarillis Love.8

John Yelton married Anna Lambert on 28 November 1797 in Harrison County, Kentucky.4,1,5 On 12 Sep 1808, the Pendleton County Court appointed John Yelton surveyor of the road leading from the mouth of Flour Creek to the Campbell line in the direction of Grant's Lick in place of Walter Fryer, who had resigned.6 John Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1810 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 26-44, 1 female 26-44, 1 male 10-15, 3 females under 10, and 2 males under 10. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to John, his wife, Anna Lambert, his sons, Phillip Yelton, Jesse G. Yelton and William Yelton, his daughters, Amelia Yelton, Mary Yelton and Rebecca Yelton.7 John Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, 1 female 16-26, 2 males 18-26, 1 female 10-16, 1 male 10-16, 2 females under 10, and 3 males under 10.. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to John, his wife, Anna Lambert, his sons, William Yelton, John Phillip Yelton, Jesse G. Yelton, James Perry Yelton, Samuel Yelton and Pendleton Yelton, his daughters, Rebecca Yelton, Mary Yelton, Amelia Yelton and Margaret Yelton.8 John Yelton was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 50-60, 1 female 50-60, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 15-20, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 5-10, and 1 female under 5. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to John, his wife, Anna Lambert, his sons, Samuel Yelton, Isaac Lambert Yelton and James Perry Yelton, his daughters, Margaret Yelton as well as Rebecca Ann Cherry. I believe the male 30-40 is Aaron Benjamin Cherry, husband of John's daughter Margaret, and the female under 5 is Aaron and Margaret's newborn daugher Rebecca. They don't appear elsewhere in the 1830 Census, and this seems like a reasonable explanation for the presence in the household of a child too young to be Anna's daughter.9 John Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 60-70, 1 female 60-70, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 15-20, and 1 female 15-20. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to John, his wife, Anna Yelton, his sons, Samuel Yelton and Isaac Lambert Yelton.10 John and Anna Yelton owned a large farm which straddled the Pendleton~Campbell County line. The house was located on the Campbell County side and the barn on the Pendleton County side.11 John Yelton, age 79 was living in the household of Phillop Yelton, age 49, in the 1850 Census of Campbell County, Kentucky.12 John Yelton died on 2 February 1852 in Campbell County, Kentucky, A letter written 20 December 1897 by J. J. Yelton, states that John Yelton was the son of Charles Yelton and married Anna Lambert. William C. Yelton married Nancy Taylor, daughter of Rev. John Taylor, on 7 January 1810 in Campbell County, Kentucky.1,5 William C. Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1810 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to William, his wife, Nancy Taylor.6 William C. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to William, his wife, Nancy Taylor, his sons, Daniel W. Yelton, John James Yelton, Robert Taylor Yelton, William Alexander Yelton and Elijah Yelton, his daughters, Isabella Yelton and Mary W.      Charles Yelton was born on 27 February 1782 in Virginia.1 He was listed as the head of a household in the 1810 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. No one else is included in the household, which is consistent with Charles' marriage to Millie Gosney later that year.2

Charles Yelton married Amelia (Millie) Gosney, daughter of Benjamin Gosney and Sarah Applebee, on 17 December 1810 in Campbell County, Kentucky.3,4 Charles Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male over 45, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10, and 5 males under 10. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Amelia (Millie) Gosney, his sons, Coleman G.
