William James Yelton was born on 4 January 1807 in Iredell County, North Carolina.1,2 The identification of the William R. Yelton who appears in the 1830 Census of Wilkes County, North Carolina as a son of Charles H. Yelton is speculative. Charles' family Bible states the existence of a son, William James Yelton, of approximately the right age, but this Bible record was made at least 25 years after William's birth. The 1820 Census also indicates the existence of a son of the correct age. The death certificate of Williams's son, James Yelton, gives his father's place of birth as Iredell County, NC and Charles was living in Iredell County at the time William was born. I've found no further record of Charles' son William in either North Carolina or Tennessee.1,3 He is probably included in the household of Charles Henson Yelton, in the 1820 Census of Iredell County, North Carolina.3

William James Yelton married Edith Decker circa 1825.4 William R. Yelton was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Wilkes County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 1 female under 5, and 2 males under 5. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to William, his wife, Edy Yelton, his sons, Charles Yelton and James A. Yelton, his daughter, Mary Yelton.5 William James Yelton died between 1838 and 1840.6

Lydia Yelton married John Norris, son of Thomas Gilbert Norris and Rachel Chambers, circa 1827. 4 Lydia Yelton is probably included in the household of Charles Yelton in the 1830 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina.5
Mrs. John Norris, appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 female 30-40, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 5-10, 1 female under 5, and 1 male under 5.. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Mrs., her sons, John W. Norris, Gilbert L. Norris and David M. Norris, her daughter, Rachel Catherine Norris. This census entry is unusual in that "Mrs. John Norris" is listed as the head of household, although an adult male of the appropriate age is present. I suspect that John was already in Tennessee in preparation for the family's approaching move, although it seems odd to include in him the household but not to list him as the head. Perhaps the use of "Mrs. John Norris" was the enumerator's compromise of an ambiguous situation.6 Lydia Yelton died on 1 October 1849 in Tennessee at age 40. She was survived by her husband, John Norris.1

Even in those pre-1850 census entries where a woman (usually a widow) is shown as head of the household, she is almost always listed using her given name. The use of "Mrs." in this context is somewhat unusual. In the 1840 Census for North Carolina, a search on www.ancestry.com reveals 259 households headed by "Mrs." somebody. Approximately 100 of these were in a single county (Richmond), indicating that it may simply be a peculiarity of the enumerator. "Mrs. John Norris" is the only person listed this way in Ashe County..

Mary Ellen Ford

F, #355, b. circa 1805, d. after 1880
Mary Ellen Ford was born circa 1805 in North Carolina.1

Mary Ellen Ford married Barnett C. Yelton, son of Charles Henson Yelton and Susannah Rogers, before 1828.2 Mary Yelton is probably included in the 1830 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina in the household of her husband, Barnet Yelton.3 Mary Yelton is probably included in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina in the household of her husband, Barnet Yelton.4 Mary survived the death of her husband, Barnett C. Yelton, circa 1844.5,1,6,7 Mary Yelton, age 45, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Watauga County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Lydia Yelton, age 15, Mary Yelton, age 8 and Barnet Yelton, age 6. Mary reported owning no real estate.8 She was recorded as the head of a household in the 1860 Census of Watauga County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were John L. Yelton, Mary Yelton and Barnette Yelton, age 16. Mary reported owning real estate worth $200 and personal property worth $218. Mary is identified as a "widow farmer" in this census.9 She appeared as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Watauga County, North Carolina. Mary reported owning real estate worth $150 She is living alone in the household.10
Mary Yelton, age 74 was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Census of Columbia County, Washington. Also living in the house were.11 She died after 1880 In the 1880 Census I found a Mary Yelton in Columbia County, Washington Territory. She's 74 years old, a widow, and the census states that she was born in North Carolina and both her parents were born in South Carolina. She is living in the same house with M. G. Hagaman, although they are shown as separate families. M. G. Hagaman is male, age 40, and married, although he's alone in the census. He's also shown as born in NC.

The only Hagamans
or Hagermans in the 1850 Census were in Watauga County, NC. That's really interesting,
because there was a Yelton family in Watauga County. And it has a Mary of
the right age, Mary Ellen Ford who married Barnet Yelton. She moved with
most of her children back to NC about 1847 when her husband died in
Tennessee. The last record I have of her in NC is the 1870 Census for
Watauga County.

But if this is her, what on earth was she doing in Washington Territory,
living in a household by herself? I can account for most of her children,
and there is no connection with the Hagaman/Hagerman family that I know of.
There's one daughter Susan A., who was born ca. 1836 and that I have nothing on. There's also an older daughter whose name I don't even know, but she was probably too old to have married a man born in 1840.11
