Changes to Perth County Townships
Effective Jan 1, 1998, the townships of Perth County were restructured. If you are doing historical and/or genealogical research, you should still look for information filed under the old township names. However, you should know that this has happened.
Source: Perth County Profiles, Vol 16, No. 2, published by Perth County Branch OGS.
Townships have been amalgamated as follows:
The townships of Logan, Hibbert, Fullarton and the town of Mitchell are now the Township of West Perth.
The townships of Mornington, Ellice, North and South Easthope and the village of Milverton are now the Township of East Perth.
The townships of Downie and Blanshard are now the Township of South Perth.
The townships of Wallace and Elma and the town of Listowel are now the Township of North Perth. What this means: For historical research, you will still have to know the original townships since that's how records are filed. Only records filed after January 1998 will be affected.
This may mean problems for our descendants who want to find out information about us. Also, what saddens me about these changes is the loss of the historical value of the original names. All the original townships were named for a reason - to commemorate someone who is important in the history of that township.

Perth County is located in south-western Ontario in about the middle of the peninsula. There are many small towns and hamlets in this area, and the largest city is Stratford. Stratford currently has a population of about 30 000. This population swells in the summer tourist season! For the most part Perth County consists of rural agricultural land. The other major industry is tourism because of the Stratford Festival.
It is one of the few counties in South-Western Ontario that doesn't touch any of the Great Lakes. Because of its location, and distance from the Great Lakes, it was one of the last areas in Ontario to be settled. People who aren't familiar with Ontario often confuse it with Perth, a city in Lanark County. If it's Perth, Lanark County you're after, or if your reference just says Perth, here's a link to the Lanark County GenWeb. But it was nice of you to visit.
