South Easthope TownshipHamlets, Villages and TownsThe smallest township of Perth County, the largest settlement in this farming community is Sebastopol, which is so small it's not even on my map of Ontario. Tavistock sticks out into South Easthope township, but is in Oxford County.Books Specific to South EasthopeThe new township history is Country Roads: A History of South Easthope. There is also a book specific to the Easthope townships in Vera McNichol's series Reveries of a Pioneer. There's more information on this series on my Perth County Books page. PioneersThe first settler in Perth County settled in South Easthope, making this the area of the county which has been inhabited the longest. This was Sebastian FRYFOGEL, who arrived in 1828 and opened a tavern. Other early settlers mentioned in the history books are Andrew RIDDELL, Andrew HELMER, and a party of Scotchmen from Perthshire, from which Perth County takes its name. Huron County Library has put online many assessment rolls for 1842. This is basically a list of residents of the area in 1842; it tells you who was living there and how much land they owned. Read their introduction first and then go to their South Easthope Township page. See also the new Perth County Pioneers page for visitors' submissions of their pioneer info.
