From a Paisley, Ontario Newspaper death notice: "Mrs Fennel was a talented
musician, and while the family resided in Paisley she was organist and choir
leader in Knox Church and organized and directed a number of operettas which
received acclaim in the village and neighboring towns where they were presented.
She also conducted vocal and piano classes.
The family left Paisley 25 years ago and went to Mimico, where Mr Fennel passed
away. Mrs Fennel had recently been making her home with her daughter."

He was enrolled at the University of Toronto at the age of 16 where he began his studies in
Political Science with aim of entering law. His University Studies were interrupted by World
War I. He went overseas with the U of T 67th Battery but later transferred to the Royal Flying
Corps.He flew in France where on one mission he crashed but survived without serious injury.
While in the Flying Corps he was a dear friend of Harold Hartney who was later instrumental
in founding the American Air Force. He met and married Gwladys Armanda Clucas, Liverpool,
while in England. At the end of the war, before returning to Canada, he spent a term studying at
Oxford University. His father wanted him to complete his studies in Canada offering to pay his
expenses but Donald V. refused, declaring that he was now a married man and would make his
own way.Donald and Gwladys lived in Toronto from late 1919 or early 1920 to ??, in Montreal
until April 1934, at which time they returned to Toronto. He worked for the Consolidated Press
in both Montreal and Toronto. He was very active at St.Clement's Anglican Church, serving on
the Board of Directors and as Rector's Warden. Donald is buried with his wife beside him in
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

Donald married Gwladys Armanda CLUCAS on 10 Jan 1919 in Brockley Wesl'an, Brockley
Road, Brockley, Co Of London. Gwladys was born on 2 Apr 1896 in Liverpool, England,
christened in St Chrysostom ?, Liverpool, England, died on 4 Jun 1990 in Sudbury Gn Hosp,
Sudbury, Ontario, at age 94, and was buried in MT Pleasant Cem, Toronto, Ontario.

General Notes: [GRO] Gwladys' name on her birth record is spelled conventionally:
Gladys Amanda. The record states that she was born at 22 Ogwen Street, Everton.
This street is not on modern maps and either the name was changed or the street
disappeared in the reconstruction following World War II. Everton was heavily
damaged during the war.
(MLM) Gwladys and Donald were married at Brockley Wesleyan Chapel, Brockley
Road, Brockley, District of Greenwich, County of London by George Harris,
witnesses: Mae B Clucas, sister; and her husband, L.C.W.Clucas (also a cousin)
and Gertrude A Eyres, sister. Marriage Notice, Liverpool Echo, Jan 14 1919:
"MCLEOD-CLUCAS Jan 10 by special licence at Brockley, Wesleyan Chapel, by
Reverend George [Barnes?] Lieutenant Donald Vobling [sic] McLeod RAF of
Toronto, Canada to Gwladys Amanda [sic] fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.
Clucas, Sefton Park, Liverpool." The address given on Gwladys and Donald's
marriage certificate was 116 St Asaph Road, Brockley, District of Greenwich,
County of London which was possibly the home of her sister Gertrude Clucas
(Mrs. John Eyres). Gwladys remembered her address by 23 Sep 1919, as
208 Parliament Street, Prince's Park, Liverpool, by this date she was Mrs. Donald
Vosburgh McLeod. When in Liverpool Sep 1992, Lorraine and I failed to check
this at the Library. Gwladys is buried beside her husband in Mount Pleasant Cemetery,
Toronto, Ontario.

EVANS, Wilfred Hugo, Emeritus Professor, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario,
Royal Airforce #102694 - At the Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Ontario, on
Sunday May 21, 2000, in his 95th year. Beloved husband of Catherine Blacklock
and loving father of Penelope Evans of Toronto. Born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of
David Evans and his wife, Florence Roberts. He is also survived by his first cousins
Mervyn Jones of Hove, East Sussex, England and Mona (Garry) Edwards of Afton
Valley, Cymmer, Wales, and their families, as well as cousins on Paraparaumu, New
Zealand, Talgarreg and Aberystwyth, Wales and in England.

Hugo obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, 1st class, from the University of Wales and,
after studying at the Sorbonne, he bacame 'Docteur de l' Universitede Paris'. He served
during the war (1941-45) as an Intelligence Officer with the R.A.F. in West Africa, France
and Belgium. He was decorated by three countries, Canada - Queen's Jubilee Medal;
England - war medals and stars; France - Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques.
He served as Fellow of the University Wales, Lecturer in French Language and Literature, University of Liverpool, and head of the Department of French (1948-1970) Queen's
University, Kingston, Ontario. Author of "L'Historien Mezeray", co-author of "Prose and
Verse Selections from Sixteenth Century French Authors", Honorary Member of the
Association of Candian University Teachers of French (President 1966-69) and member
of the Royal Kingston Service Institute.

Resting at the James Reid Funeral Home, Cataraqui Chapel (Counter Street at Highway 2)
May 27th, 2000 from 12 PM until the time of the service at 2 PM The Reverend Canon James Scanlon officiating. Interment St Mary's Cemetery, Division Street, Kingston. As a lasting
memory of Hugo, donations may be made to the Hugo Evans Book Prize, c/o Student Awards, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario K7L 3N6.
