General Notes: Peter Huyck, Jr., started in active business life for himself as steersman, rafting logs to Philadelphia. Later he took to buying and selling live stock, walking long distances, driving his herd
before him, buying and selling as he went. At the end of a few years he bought a farm, which he stocked
well, and in connection with his farm work engaged again in lumbering. When twenty-seven years of age,
he married Esther Seeley, daughter of William and Mary (Benedict) Seeley, of Sidney. They had five
children, namely; .William E., who married Lavinia (Begeal) Houghtaling, the widow of Elias Houghtaling,
who was killed in the late war; George J., the subject of this biography; Julia A., who married Charles
Downs, of Deposit; Mary E., who married William Begeal, son of Samuel and Charlotte (Barley)Begeal,
of Schoharie County; and Celia Ann, who married Charles A. Palmatier, of Tompkins. Peter Huyck, Jr.,
still lives at this writing, scarcely showing his advanced age of eightyfive years, and remembers all important
events that have occurred during his life. He was one of the founders of the Presbyterian church in his town,
and its first Deacon. He was in his young days a Democrat; but at the starting of the Republican party he
cast his vote with them, and has continued to do so up to the present time

General Notes: GEORGE J. HUYCK, a thriving farmer of Deposit, was born in Tompkins, N.Y., September 7, 1840, son of Peter Huyck, Jr., who was born in the same town, March 26, 1810, he being the son of Peter Huyck, a native of Schoharie County.
George J. Huyck received his education at the district schools, helping his father with the farm work at odd times, and had just become of age, in 1862, when the war broke out. He enlisted in the One Hundred and Forty-fourth Regiment, New York Volunteers, served three years; and at James Island, in front of Charleston, on February 17, 1865, was shot by two minie balls, which struck both legs. After lying in the hospital at Beaufort, S.C., he returned to the regiment, and was granted a furlough of thirty days. He reported for duty at the end of that time, and was mustered out in July of the same year. After remaining at home about two years, he went to Ricevil!e, Mitchell County, Ia., where he engaged in farming and stock-raising. He remained there three years, then sold out, returned East, and bought the homestead, where he engaged in farming, dairying, and lumbering to a certain extent. In 1892 Mr. Huyck sold that place, and went to the DeMoney farm, where he remained but a short time, as in 1894 he bought the Whitaker estate, one of the best and oldest in the country. On November 27, 1872, George J. Huyck married Ann E. Travis, of Hale's Eddy, a descendant of the old Whitaker family, the original owners of his estate, and a sister of Squire
Travis, of Hale's Eddy, town of Deposit. Mr. and Mrs. Huyck have three children -- William Jan, Rutherford Squire, and Celia Ann. Mr. Huyck is a member of the Presbyterian church, and his wife a member of the Baptist church of Tompkins. He was a charter member of Hathaway Post, Grand Army of the Republic, Deposit, and is honored and respected as a patriotic and useful citizen.

HUYCK, George J. . . . At age 24, a single man, born in Delaware County, he is included in Fam. No. 37 as a son of Peter Huyck. He entered military service in Sept. 1862 in the 144th NY for 3 years as a Private. At present, he is a Private in the 144th NY with 3 months of unexpired service.

A. Byron Darby, M.D., is a native of Fulton County, Ohio, born Nov. 18, 1839,
a son of Samuel Bryant and Sepharna (Guilford) Darby, his father a native of Vermont
and his mother of Massachusetts. His parent were married in Allegany County, State
of New York in 1826, and in 1836 emigrated to what was then Henry, now Fulton
County, Ohio, with two yoke of oxen and lumber wagon (one of the yokes then used
is still in the possession of the Doctor). Being among the first setters of t he county,
Samuel B. Darby helped organize the first township in the county; kept the first post
office; taught the first school and opened the first store which he carried on for several
years. In early life he was a Democrat, but after its organization affiliated with the
Republican party, and was a member of the Convention which nominated J.C.
Fremont, and also Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency. Samuel Bryant Darby died
July 15, 1884, aged seventy-seven years of age. Sepharna Darby is yet living, aged
seventy-four years. They had a family of nine children, four of whom are living.
A. Byron Darby attended Alfred College in Allegany County, N.Y., and subsequently
Oberlin College, Ohio, where he paid his school expenses by teaching and working
hours not required for study. Having early in life had the desire to study medicine, in
1862 and 1863 after reading the necessary text books, he attended the Eclectic Medical
College at Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he graduated in the spring of the latter year . After
his graduation he located in Flint, Ind., and practiced in partnership with Dr. H.L . Smith a
year, when Dr. Smith moved from the place and left him the only physician there. He built
up a large practice, but his health becoming impaired, in 1864 he moved to Waterloo , DeKalb County, Ind., and has met with equally as good success here as in his former location. He
is a member of the State Medical Society, the Northeastern Indiana Medical Association
and the DeKalb County Medical Society, and enjoys the confidence and esteem of his
colleagues in the professions as well as the families who employ him. He has been Secretary
of the Board of Health of Waterloo since the organization of the Board. Being of a genial, but dignified and calm presence, he inspires the confidence of his patients, and his sympathetic and kindly nature wins for him their love and esteem. Dr. Darby was married April 8, 1864, to
Linda M. Huyck, youngest daughter of John T. and Lucinda (Basil) Huyck, the former of
whom was born in the State of New York and the latter in the State of Vermont. Dr. A. Byron
and Mrs. Darbyhave three children---Hadsell Byron, born June 3, 1865; Frank Wm., born
Feb. 11, 1868, and their daughter Verna, born Nov. 6, 1878. The doctor and his wife are
members of the Church of Christ and workers in the Sunday-school. He is a member of
Waterloo Lodge, No. 307, F. & A .M., also No. 1,436, K. of H. He is a strong supporter
of the temperance cause, and lends his influence at every opportunity in his practice to
encourage men to be temperate, that they may not only preserve their health, but their

David Shibley witnessed the above document and J W Mcaulay Chairman of the

(MKA) The land referred to in the above record for land has not been found in the Ontario Archives Land Record Index. It appears as: John Vosbing, 17 Nov 1797 with no place of residence and no property described. A John C Vosbury, residence in Ernestown, received Lot 26 Conc 5 on the 3 Mar 1807. This lot is only 150 acres but the date suggests that it could not be the land received as a result of the petition. No grants were found in the name of Hannah Shibley, although grants are listed for most of her brothers and sisters. A grant to Hannah Vosburgh in 1837 in Tecumseth Twp resulted from her own petition.
[PAC] Land petitions, Upper Canada "To his excellency Francis Gore Esquire, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Upper Canada etc etc etc In Council The Petition of John C Vosburg of the Township of Ernestown, Farmer. Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner is an inhabitant of the Township of Ernestown in the Midland District, a Farmer and is desirous of obtaining a Lease for Lot Number thirty-six in the fifth Concession of the Township of Ernest Town in the Midland District being a Clergy Reserve. Therefore Humbly Prays That your Excellency in Council may be pleased to grant your Petitioner a lease of said Lot under such regulations as are customary. Your Petitioner further begs to state that his surety is Moses Simmons of the Township of Ernest Town in the Midland District aforesaid Farmer. At Hallowell, Ontario, a Mr Vosburgh was a member of the Free Mason Lodge, Prince Edward Co in the early 1800's. Probably John C. Vosburgh. John C. Vosburgh was in the war of 1812 on the British side.  1835 Census at Sacket's Harbor, New York, gives: Anna Vosburgh, 1 male who was not a voter and not subject to militia duty, 3 females, of whom 1 was married and under 45, 1 unmarried and under 16. (When the extra female is not described, "I" [writer not known] take it that she was over 45) Calvin Shibley, 2 males of whom 1 was entitled to vote, 1 female, married and
under 45. [wife?] George Vosburgh, 2 males of whom 1 was entitled to vote, 1 female, married and
under 45, 2 unmarried and under 16.
(MKA) One source gives John's birth place as Herkimer, New York, the son of . Johannes Abraham Vosburgh and Neltje Gardinier. Kinderhook, Columbia Co, New York, where his parents resided is more likely. This is further supported by his membership in the Militia for Columbia Co. John's membership in the Militia until 1792 hardly qualifies him for a United Empire Loyalist. The land grant was on his wife's account. John C Vosburgh signed his name with the middle initial C. In the Dutch naming convention this would have been after his father with Cornelis (Cornelius) or Christoffel (Christopher) as the most likely. This is Johannes, son of Cornelis V and Annatje Burghat Chr 29 Dec 1765 at Kinderhook.

marriage records. The baptismal records for Cornelius, John, Ellenor, Geney, Delia, and George are recorded by John Langhorn in Ernesttown. Birth records for the younger children have not yet been located.
[RRM] A marriage is recorded between Charity Vosburgh and Elijah Young in Ernesttown 22 Dec 1816. Charity may have been a younger sister of John C Vosburgh, or an unrecorded eldest daughter.
