(MLM) Remembered by all as an exceptionally pretty woman with a wonderful sense
of humour. Aunt Lola was a graduate of Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario.
She taught history and Latin at Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute.
She was an extremely skilled teacher as evidenced by her very successful
tutoring of her nephew Norman McLeod. She enabled him to catch up on one
year's curriculum missed when he attended school in Quebec then transferred to
Ontario in 1934. An Ernie Graub (spelling?) wanted to marry Lola. He had a car and chaufeur and
presented her with a watch and an ermine coat. It is not known why a marriage
did not take place. Lola gave the watch to Lorraine, it has the "E to L 1929" engraved on it.
The coat was given to Lorraine's mother Gwladys, and Lorraine wore it to her
wedding to Murray Keith Abel and later to the Wedding Reception.

very deaf and eventually used an ear trumpet. She had learned to play the
piano by ear.
(CME) "In 1925, at the time of the union of the Methodist and Presbyterian
Churches there was much strife. Catherine picked up the Communion Table and
took it home until things cooled down. Typical McLeod, I can see her doing
it."

General Notes: (CME) William was a handy man, competant in everything. He was able to shoe
horses and had his own blacksmith shop on the farm. He made his own maple
syrup, had an orchard and kept all of his family busy. He dropped dead on his
way to the barn in order to close the barn door with his wife alone in the
house. It took John and Mae seven days to come by train from Saskatchewan for
the funeral.

(CFW) Ben Madden was the son of John Madden and his wife, Augusta, who lived
on Concession 8 Lot 20, Chatham Township.
Ben Madden's life work was in various commercial enterprises. He is said to
have been operating a restaurant at the corner of Main and Tecumseh Streets
[Dresden] at the time of his marriage to Janet Carscallen.
Shortly afterward, still in 1900, we find him running a general store at the
corner of Brown Street N, lots 1 and 2. He remained in business here until
1939, when the store was taken over by the M & P chain.
This corner was part of the British American Institution, till all of its lands
were sold in 1871. In 1872, Nevil Smith was operating a store at the corner
and in 1878, R P Wright moved there from his store across the river. The
building at that time was a small one, of frame with a false front, and is
shown still standing in an 1879 picture of a delivery of farm machinery, under
the auspices of the agent J R Boylan. The nearby buildings are mostly of
brick, so it is probable that R P Wright built the brick store, as Ben Madden
did not begin business at the corner till after the turn of the century.
(MKA) The source document includes a photograph of the building and although
faded, signs painted on the brick are still visible: "Ben Madden ... The
Reliable Grocer" and "Highest prices paid 4 produce" A new sign reads
"Simpson's Grocery" with the Coca Cola Logo. Abridged from a newspaper
column accompanying the above mentioned photograph
... "E B Madden was interested in municipal affairs, and served as a mayor of
the town. ... If one looks closely, the south side of the building still shows
signs painted on the brick: "E B Madden, the Corner Store" along with the
admonition to buy "that 25 cent T"
Mr Madden was a man of dry wit and his store was also a gathering palce for the
cognoscenti of the community, where news was known almost before it happened:
digested and analyzed by the hot stove league. Mr Madden took in an
apprentice, the late Russell Dynes: and being of the old school, insisted that
a Day's work be given for a day's pay.
...his sense of humor sometimes got carried away especially when he wrote out
his advertisement headings ... eg "Ben Madden's Pants are down."
Mr Madden, in addition to his storekeeping duties also was the local magistrate
and school truant officer, and in later years, after he had sold the grocery
business, retained a small office at the rear of the premises, from which he
dispensed insurance and justice along with a stern face to any lad not in
school.

Edward married Janet "Jennie" CARSCALLEN on 23 Sep 1891 in Dresden, Ontario. Janet was born on 8 Aug 1869 and died on 15 Apr 1963, at age 93.

Mrs Janet Madden. Funeral services were conducted by Rev E Egileson, for the
late Mrs Janet Madden, wife of the late E.B.Madden and formerly of Dresden from
the Holmes Funeral Home in Dresden on Thursday. Mrs Madden passed away at
the home of her son Jack, of Windsor on Monday, April 15th. She was in her 94th
year.Surviving besides her son Jack is one grandson, Paul of Burlington and one
great grandaughter.

General Notes:
(JDW) William and his sisters were raised for a time by relatives after the
death of their mother. He left hoime at an early age. Shortly after his
marriage to Letitia he held several pastorates in Northern Michigan, moved to
Missouri and later to Overbrook, Kansas, then to Wichita in 1905. He left the
ministry in 1909 to devote all of his time to Public Welfare with his wife, a
former schoolteacher. They were responsible for Sedgewick House, a home for
the homeless, young old, male or female. Other areas they were involved in: the
first unemployment agency, free milk and ice fund, day nurseries, the municipal
farm, tuberculosis hospital, and improved city health department. The present
Wichita Family Welfare Association out of the Associated Charities, through
their untiring efforts. They were honored for their work on May 3 1934 after
25 years of service.

Merrick married Leticia ELLIS on 12 Jan 1889. Leticia was born in 1868 in Simcoe, Ontario and died in 1936 in Wichita, Kansas, at age 68.
