(FLV) "[Aunt Lila Hoffman at 93 years of age] passed along an interesting
family story concerning our branch of Vosburghs move to Ilinois. It seems
that three brothers, one of whom was my great grandfather William's father,
owned either a sawmill or a lumber operation in Kingston Township, Ontario.
One of the brothers, Miles by name, absconded with all of the cash and horses.
The two remaining brothers did not know to where he fled. Aunt Lila thinks
that someone later heard that he was in Missouri. My brother George discovered
an old story that he fisrt came to Rockford, Illinois. It has been documented
that William did not come to Illinois until 1860. Therefore I am assuming the
crime was quite a bit earlier."

[MKA] A birth location in Herkimer, New York, reported by [CME] is highly
unlikely. Jacob was probably born in Ernesttown Twp or Fredricksburgh Twp in
Lennox & Addington Co or Hallowell (Picton) in Prince Edward Co, since his
father was known to be in Ernesttown in 1793. See notes for John C Vosburgh,
Jacob's father. Elizabeth J Schmidt of Mt Hope Cemetary reports: There is no record
at Mt Hope Cemetary for the Interment of Jacob Vosburg. The stone reads Jacob
Vosburg died Sept 24 1848 aged 54 years. The lot (13 E, W 1/2) was purchased by
William Vosburg on October 3 1852. The north 1/4 was transferred to Schuler Moses
by Charles G Vosburg, "he being the only living heir" on March 6 1884. The rear of the
stone bears the names and dates of E.D. Moses M.D. and his wife Mary Ann.
(MKA) This may mean that the record on the stone is a memorial to Jacob
Vosburgh only, he was buried elsewhere, particularly because the plot was
purchased 4 years after Jacob died. Considering the transfer of the title
to Dr. Moses it is assumed they are no relation. The purhaser of the stone was
Jacob's nephew, son of John Vosburgh, William Rin 419. Charles G. Vosburg
is William's younger brother.

Clarissa's signature on a transfer of land document dated 26 Feb 1850 is
spelled "Clairessa Vosburgh". The first of the double S and the S in Vosburgh
are the old style "f". In this document as a widow she has sold for one
hundred and twenty pounds, in Kingston Twp, first concession, part of lot 19,
containing about 1 acre. The document is difficult to read but appears to
describe property in Portsmouth along the waterfront, once belonging to John
McLeod Senior. This document was drawn up by John Alexander MacDonald, lawyer
at the time and Prime Minister of Canada ultimately.
Note from Elizabeth J.Schmidt Mt.Hope Cemetary:
An interment record was found for Clarissa Vosburg. She was interred on
October 3 1852, age 43. She lived on Mortimer Street in this city (Rochester
N.Y.) and died of consumption. Both names (Clarissa's and her husband's) are
inscribed on the family stone.
Clarissa, his wife died October, 2 1852 Aged 42 years.
(The age is badly eroded and may be 47 or 57)
Comment MKA: For a birth year, the age 43 in the Cemetary record was used
instead of any of the possible ages on the stone.
(MKA) The above two references are the only known records for Clarissa. It is
possible that she is a second wife and that a marriage record might be found in
the Methodist Church about 1842/44. Clarissa's surname is unknown.

The Thomas Madden Family in the Dresden Area 1860 - 1969 [Dresden is about 12
miles west of Thamesville] Thomas was a farmer. The earliest mention of the Madden family near Dresden is found in Soutar's Directory of Essex, Kent and Lambton Counties, compiled in 1864 - 67. It lists in Chatham Twp, Kent Co:

The Kent County Atlas 1881 also names:
Madden, Reverend Thomas - Wesleyan Methodist Minister and Farmer, 150 acres,
Concession 8 Lot 20. Valued at $6,000. Born at Kingston 1805 and settled in
the county, 1860. Post Office: Dresden.
These farms face on the 9th Concession, but number from the 8th and are about
three miles south of Dresden, east of the corner of the 9th Concession and on
the Lindsay Road. This corner was given the name of Turnerville, when a post
office was set up in 1886, at the corner of William Turner's farm. But the
Erie and Huron Railway ran along the other side of the road and the station was
named Ennett, after the Ennett family through whose farm it passed for quite a
distance. A mile farther south, along the Lindsay Road, at the corner of the
8th Concession is the Lindsay Road church, established in 1874, which was the
Church that the Madden family attended ... Reverend Thomas Madden is also
mentioned in the history of Dawn Mills Church.
Thomas Madden's wife was Clarissa Lavinia Fretts, daughter of John Jacob Fretts
and Elizabeth Gordaniar [sic] of Napanee ... Reading of recent microfilms in
Chatham Library of early newspapers revealed:
"DIED Clarissa L Madden, in Chatham, Friday evening, November 16th 1882, aged
80 years and 8 months ..."

with the Salvation Army, rising to the rank of Captain."
No information is available as to whether he ever married.
