Mother: Emma Dean KRESS |
From Uncle Will Finch's letter (July 9, 1906) written by Pearl
Eugene Harrison (Aunt Lolly):
My grandfather, Joseph, and his brother, John, landed in New
York City just after the Revolutionary War. They came from
London and were from Warwickshire. We're related there to the
Cabel Loft family and to the DeLawney, Staunton, and Courtenay
families. My grandmother Finch was a Mary Stewart, closely
related to Mary Stuart of history----the orthography of her name
(Stewart) indicating the English branch of the family.
On the arrival at New York, my grandfather remained in New York
and Uncle John went to South Carolina, from whom nearly all the
Southern Finch family is descended. The family names of Joseph,
John, William, Charles, Henry, Eliza, Mary, Sarah, Jane, and
Harriet runs through both families and the family resemblance is
very strong.
My father had two brothers, William Staunton and Charles, and
sisters, Sarah, Maria, Eliza, Jane, and Harriet. Do not know
what has become of them, as immediately after the Civil War, as
soon as they learned of my adherence to the Southern Cause, they
disowned me and I have ever since been an alien from that
portion of the family. My grandfather Finch lived partly in New
York City and partly in Belleville, N.J., 12 miles from the
city.
On my mother's side, her father, Elijah Kress, was of Holland
Dutch descent----her mother, Silsby of Puritan stock. She
(mother) was born in Bath, Steuben Co.,N.Y., but during her
childhood moved with her parents to Clarence, 18 miles east of
Buffalo, N.Y. where she married my father. I was born in Buffalo
in September, 1830. In 1832 we moved to St. Thomas, Canada West
(now Ontario) where your mother, Mary Emma, was born. Shortly
after, my father was arrested as a "Yankee spy" by the notorious
Colonel Pierce and after examination, was banished from the
province under penalty of death, and in a heavy gale, we were
forced to take passage on a sail vessel for Detroit, where the
cholera was raging.
We passed though this suord ordeal, and the next year found us
at Monroe, Mich. where father had charge of the U.S. Arsenal.
1837 or 1838 we went to Adrian, Michigan, where in 1840 your
Aunt Amelia was born. The next year we returned to Buffalo ---
then to Erie, Pa. Where we resided a number of years --- then to
Mercer, Pa., then to Greenville, Pennsylvania, from whence our
family came by sections to the South and here we have been for
nearly fifty years, an isolated branch of the Joe Finch
(NewYork) family.
On my mother's side, one of her sisters (Hannah) married a
Robert Eunoon, of Scotch descent, who lived in New York City.
His son, Eugene Eunoon, was a brenet? Colonel of the 6th
N.Y.Regiment (bloody sixth) in the Civil War.
Now I have given you in brief, the outline of our family
history. On the one side we are English and Scotch origin ---on
the other, of Holland Dutch and Puritan stock. Now shake all
together and determine, if you can, what you are. Well, I sumit
up thus --- I am eligible to the St. George's Club on account of
my English ancestry --- to the Caledonians, for my Scotch
lineage --- to the Knuke? bockers? through my Holland Dutch
grandfather and to the Mayflower or Puritan stock through my
good grandmother Selsby, and to the Revolutionary through the
same and last, though not least, to the white lily of this
glorious Southland by my allegence to her in her days of
tribulation and by being discarded by my nearest of kin for my
fealty to the land of my adoption. I am not ashamed of my
record. The several nationalities in our family heritage
combined, make us strictly an essential American, the noblest
one of all. Should you visit Niagara, it is but a couple of
hours run byrail up to St. Thomas. I have not been there since
we were exiled on board a sail vessel in a raging storm. I have
a vivid recollection of seeing my father dragged out of bed at
midnight by Negro soldiers in British? uniform and carried away
a prisoner. This was during the Canadian rebellion of 1833. In
1833, I distinctly remember the hurried preparations for the
defense of Monroe from a threatened attack from the Indians. In
1838 or 1839, I was on the first passenger train on the Southern
Michigan and Northern Indian R.R. from Adrian to Monroe --- and
many, many incidents from my childhood come to my mind.
