The Trueman family was from the same area of Nottinghamshire as
the Greenfields. Thomas' future wife, Martha Trueman, was the
niece of this Thomas Trueman. Thomas Greenfield and Thomas
Trueman both settled in Calvert County, Maryland, near the
Patuxent River.
Over the years, Thomas Greenfield became very wealthy and
influential in southern Maryland. He bought and sold many tracts
of land. At his death, it is known that he owned over 2,000
acres in Prince George Co., MD.
Thomas Greenfield was a Burgess for Calvert county to the
Assembly in Annapolis, MD, from 1672 to 1696. He was also a
Justice of Calvert County from 1689-1694, and a vestryman at
St.Paul's Parish in 1691. He was appointed High Sheriff of
PrinceGeorge County and served from 1696-1699.
Thomas was also a planter, growing mainly tobaco on his lands.
He leased out much of his lands to sharecroppers, and some of
his plantations were worked by his slaves. At the time of his
death, Thomas owned 27 slaves.
Thomas died in 1715 in Prince George Co., MD, and was buried at
"Magoonskin", a family cemetery in Prince George Co.his wife,
Martha Trueman Greenfield, lived until 1739, and was buried
beside her husband.
