Old Letter Posted by Charlotte Powers
Posted on 6/17/99 8:00 PM To Hurt.Org Bios.
Ed. Note: This letter was written by my Great Aunt, Nannie Hurt Burk, in the first person. The original letter is still in my family's possession. There is some question as to whether or not she meant "Hudland" where she wrote "Hudnall" below. The letter follows and any parenthesis are hers. This is all that I know about Nannie Hurt Burk.
-Charlotte Hurt Powers

"My father, William Overton Hurt was born in 1807 in Bedford County, Virginia. The Hurts came from Wales before the Revolutionary War and settled in Bowling Green, Caroline County, Virginia. They were related to the Overtons, Lawsons and the Pendletons by marriage. My grandfather and a brother went to Bedford later on and settled on the southside of the county.

My great-grandfather married a Miss Smith, also of Bedford.

My grandfather married Miss Hudnall of Bedford. (My father's Mother)
My father, William Overton Hurt, married Sarah Elizabeth Clarke.
My father's parents died when he was a child. His oldest sister married his cousin, William Hurt, and they went to Georgia. One of his sisters married a Mr. Graves from Pittsylvania County, Virginia and the other married Mr. Thomas of Bedford. He had three brothers, John Pendelton, Lawson and Fontain, all of Bedford County. His father was in the war of 1812.

William Overton Hurt, too old for the service in the Civil War furnished provisions for the soldiers and sent a negro man, wagon and team of mules. He also furnished leather to be made into shoes for the soldiers by the inmates at the Virginia Penitentiary.

My Mother was Sarah Elizabeth Clarke
My grandmother was Francis Bacon Parker
My great-grandmother was Miss Whitlocke
My great-great Grandmother was Miss Bacon
My great-great-great-grandmother was Miss Parks
They came from England in sixteen hundred and something. They lived in what is now known as Hanover County. My Grandfather Clark's Mother was Miss Julianna Pickering of England. After her husband died she married Captain Foster.
Grandfather Clarke was recorder of Deeds at the Capital in Richmond, Va.
Our mother had a cousin who lost her life in the theater that was burned where Monumental Church now stands. Her name was Mary Gabrielle Whitelocke. Her name is on the tablet in front of the church. The young man she was going to marry lost his life too."
