Notes

"According to the book " EARLY VIRGINIA IMMIGRANTS 1623-1666" by George Cabel Greer, first published in 1912 and last in 1982 Henry Singleton came to VA in 1637, by the "John Graves", Elizabeth City Co. Also an entry Henry, 1651, by Wm. Parry, Northumberland Co. The earliest land grant recorded in Gloucester Co., VA was 1635. Henry had a grant in 1650 which was among the first dozen or so in this area. According to the book "Early Virginia Immigrants", page 299 by George Cabell Greer Henry may have entered twice: "Singleton, Hen., 1637, by John Graves, Elizabeth City Co." and "Singleton, Henry, 1651, by Wm. Parry, Northumberland Co.". This would explain how Henry would have built a mansion by 1650, before his land patent. By 1650 Henry had built a mansion and in May 1651 patented 320 acres of land on the East side of the Eastermost River in Mobjack Bay, Gloucester Co., VA. He received his headright of 50 acres per person for paying passage for John Hilliard, Mark Nethrock, Thomas Newman and his wife Susanna, as well as their daughters Anne and Susan Newman. It apperas that Henry married both daughters, Susan first. As one sails into the North from Mobjack Bay, the first old house on the left is DITCHLEY. It was originally the home of the Singletons and was called BLOOMSBURY. It is unsure if this land was owned by Henry or Sir Robert. Henry enlarged his holdings with 400 acres in 1661 and 300 acres in 1667. On October 21, 1678 the record shows Henry received a Patent for 155 acres "Lying between the pattent of his Brother Samuell Singleton" and his own land. It is possible that this was a descendent of Henry I. A Singleton Methodist Church was built on a tract of land owned by the family in the Ware Neck area of Ware Parish. The family also became established in the part of the county that later became Mathews County. According to Art Singleton Henry had 10 children. Survey Report # 10009 Virginia Colonial Records Project. Testimony of: >4p Henry Singleton, June 16, 1653, > Price was master of the "West India Merchant" and also part owner. Singleton was asked to get people to adventure sums to fit the ship for a voyage from Southampton to Virginia in September 1651. One of those interested was William Smith. Gives detail of his adventure. Ship returned safely in August 1652 and in accordance with the agreement made with Smith, ownership of 3/8 of the ship passed to him. There follows testimony by Richard Singleton, son of Henry. In "Cavaliers & Pioneers" In 1653 Henry's property was listed as the bordering land of 550 acres to William Morgan. Also in 1653 listed as border of 350 acres to John Banister, Thomas Foote & John Boarham. Again in 1653 as a border to Marke Thomas, 350 acres on S. side of Horne Harbor Cr."
