I got interested that Ezekiel W. Thomas was brought from Chicago to be
buried in Holston View cemetery, so I searched for connections. He was born
12/30/1926 in Scott Co, VA, son of Kyle and Frances Thomas. His family was
listed in the census as black or mulatto. I traced his family through Scott
Co census records to his grandfather Edward Thomas, b. 1857, who appeared in
the 1880 census as a mulatto step-son of John and Liza Thomas. So far, I
have not checked records other than census records.) Kingsport

November 5, 2012, Dennis Ray Tipton, age 60, left this earth. Dennis
was born in Kingsport, TN. He
resided briefly in War, WV and resided for 15 years in Summerville, SC
before returning to the Kingsport area.
He was educated at East Tennessee State University in Johnson
City, TN and entered the teaching profession in 1974. Dennis
was born to serve. He was
an educator, a brother, an uncle, and friend to those left behind. Dennis had battled ALS for over two years. Dennis
was loved as a teacher. This
was evidenced by the number of students and former students who showed
up for a candlelight vigil and
many gave testimonials about the impact he had on their lives.
Outpouring of condolences came from colleagues and
administrators. We have
also heard from many of his caregivers and attending nurses at Duke
University Hospital. One
friend said that although he was a great teacher he was an even better
man. Dennis
was also a caregiver and moved in to help his mother in her final years.
He was always there when called on by family and friends.
He loved books and had a great wit. A
graveside service will be scheduled later. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch Ingle Tipton, Jr. and
Thelma Ernestine Taylor Tipton, and by a sister Donna Kay Wheelock.
Dennis is survived by three brothers, Jerry, Steve, and Jeff,
Steve’s wife Vickie, who Dennis thought of as a second sister, one
niece, three nephews, and many members of his extended family. Tri-Cities
