Donna Gail (Kendrick) Vance

CHURCH HILL — Donna Gail Vance, 43, of Church Hill, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly Monday morning ( July 6, 2009 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center .

She was born in Kingsport and had been a resident of the Mount Carmel (Church Hill) area most of her life. Donna graduated from Volunteer High School in 1983. She was a sales office manager at General Shale and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and recently was attending Mountain View Baptist Church .

Donna was a loving wife, mother, daughter, had an open heart, always had a smile on her face and she loved to dance.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Kendrick; paternal grandparents, L.W. and Verda Franklin Kendrick; sister-in-law, Paula Kendrick.

She is survived by her loving husband of 14 years, Rick Vance of the home; daughters, Lindsey Danielle Vance and Savannah Leigh Vance, both of the home; mother, Wanda Kendrick, of Kingsport; brothers, Jeff Kendrick, of Mount Carmel and Doug Kendrick, of Kingsport; along with several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; faithful friend, Bodie; and a host of other friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, of Church Hill, 1115 Hwy. 11-W, Church Hill.

A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ronnie Trent officiating.

Music will be provided by Mountain View Baptist Church .

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Midway, Va. Family and friends are ask to meet at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill at 11:30 a.m. to go to the cemetery in a procession.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Lora Mae (Mitchell) Vance

KINGSPORT - Lora Mae Vance, 82, of Bloomingdale, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday ( Sept. 5, 2006 ).

She was born May 24, 1924 in Scott County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Willie and Eliza Smith Mitchell.

Lora Mae was a loving and caring mother who loved gardening and spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Vance; and two sisters, Cora Lil Williams and Pat Hall.

Survivors include one son, Cluster Vance; two grandchildren, Joey Vance and Donnie Gilliam; five sisters, Flora Bell Hutchins, Carrie Gambrell, Lena Davis, Peggy Hutchins and Juanita Cook; and two brothers, Edwin Wayne Mitchell and Tom Mitchell.

A visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Joel Trigg officiating.

Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park .

Pallbearers will be Ray Hutchins, Daniel Collins, Gary Collins, Buddy Collins, Quint Dunlap and Brad Dunlap.

East Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Diana Grace (Wilkinson) Lane Van Huss

JOHNSON CITY - Diana Grace Wilkinson VanHuss, 64, 2911 Chestnut Lane, died Friday (June 17, 2005) in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Kingsport, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Jessie Skeen Wilkinson. She had lived in Johnson City for 35 years. Mrs. VanHuss was a member of the Buffalo Valley Christian Church.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Fay Wilkinson in 1934.

Survivors include her husband, Harold VanHuss; daughters, Christa Haynes and husband, Lynn of Kingsport, and Sheri Phillips and husband, Nick of Vincennes, Ind.; sons, Randy Lane and wife, Letha, and Greg Lane and wife, Loretta, all of Kingsport, and David Brown of Elizabethton; step-daughter, Laura Elaine Spears and husband, Randy of Gray Station; grandchildren, Cassie, Tiffany, Whitney, Brittany, Seth, Makaila and Emily.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton. Friends may also call at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with Dr. Eddie Wilson and Mr. Eric Evans officiating.

Music will be provided by Jane Burleson.

Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Monday to go to the cemetery.

Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Monday, will be Mark Arnett, Worley Bennett, Brian Burleson, Ronnie, Leonard, Ben Patton and Randy Weaver.

Carrie (Campbell) Compton Van Norstrand

COEBURN, Va. — Carrie Campbell VanNorstrand, 78, entered into rest Sunday (Feb. 11, 2007) at Lonesome Pine Hospital.

She was a former resident of Ft. Myers, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Ella Murphy Campbell. Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Clayton "Chuck" VanNorstrand; sisters, Alice Faye Campbell Phillips, Rhea Moore, Gladys Gillespie, Ruth Pleasant, Mary Puckett and Annie Bishop; brothers, William and Claude Campbell.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and husband, Richard "Mayor" Griffith, Coeburn, Va., Marlene and husband, Jerry Stapleton, Nickelsville, Va., Darlene and husband, Cory Rhoton, Hiltons, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Abram and wife, Candy Compton, Middlesburg, Fla., Jack and wife, Martha Compton, Dungannon, Va., Jimmy and wife, Vickie Compton, Nickelsville, Va.; step-daughters, Beverly Cooley, Linda Burns, Lucy VanNorstrand, Judy Wooley and Shirley Christ, all of Ft. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stallard Gray Family Cemetery, Midway community. The family will meet at 12 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Rosa (Bledsoe) Vannoy

KINGSPORT — Rosa Vannoy, 93, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (April 26, 2009) at Brookhaven Manor.

She was born in Scott County, Va., but lived in Kingsport most of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Vannoy; her parents, D.B. Bledsoe and Siller Payne Bledsoe; granddaughter, Darina Clark; six brothers, Bascom Bledsoe, Oscar Bledsoe, Grant Bledsoe, Elmer Bledsoe, Hagan Bledsoe and T. L. Bledsoe; two sisters, Laura Barret and Geneva Clifton.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Creasman and husband, Mike of Kingsport; one brother, William Grady Bledsoe of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow with the Rev. Richard Dice officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Memorial Park, Garden of the Last Supper.

Danny Kaye VanZant

GASTONIA, N.C. — Danny Kaye VanZant , 55, went to be home with the Lord on Friday ( Nov. 5, 2010 ) at Caromont Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born in Kingsport was a former resident of Gate City , Va. , and had lived in Gastonia for the past 16 years. Danny was a graduate of Gate City High School, and attended Graham Bible College and Reformed Theological Seminary. He was former pastor of Freedom Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Gastonia . He was formerly employed by Sears and the Gaston County School System as a teaching assistant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lynton and Lelia Bloomer VanZant ; brother, George VanZant ; and his sister, Connie Morris.

Survivors include his wife and mother of his son, Terry VanZant of the home; his son, Adam VanZant of Gastonia; three sisters, Margaret Ann Bradshaw, Anita Taylor and husband, Mike, and Deborah VanZant , all of Gate City, Va., and his twin sister, Donna Eads and husband, Mike of Kingsport; three brothers, Garry VanZant and wife, Linda and Donnie Van Zant and wife, Linda, both of Gate City and Lynton “Bud” VanZant, Jr. and wife, Jewell of Kingsport; special aunt, Frances Jennings of Gate City; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City , Va.

Funeral services will follow in the chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Rowell and the Rev. Joe Hill officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Holston View Cemetery in Weber City . Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m.

Pallbearers will be his nephews and cousin, Dustin Eads, Andy VanZant , Zachary Taylor, Michael Taylor, Travis VanZant , Tim Bradshaw, Brian Odle and Mevlin Jennings.

Emmett P. Vanzant

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Emmett P. Vanzant, 84, Route 3 (Fairview community), entered into eternal rest on Friday (March 30, 2001) at his residence after a short courageous battle with cancer.

Born in the Fairview community, he was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a farmer. He was a loving husband and father.

Mr. Vanzant was of the Methodist faith and attended Valley Chapel Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Thomas and Rosa Vanzant; four sisters; and three brothers.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Annie England Vanzant, of the home; daughter, Patricia Williams and husband, Mike, Rogersville; sons, Samuel D. Vanzant and wife, Patti, Clinchport, Va., Emmett Lynn Vanzant and wife, Cheri, Austin, Texas; adopted son, Fred Lane and wife, Tammy, Weber City, Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and anytime at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joe Coffey and Evangelist Garry Hood officiating. Music will be provided by Melody Men.

Graveside services and burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. at England Family Cemetery near the home. The family requests that those attending the graveside service meet at the funeral home by 1 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David, Chris, Jason, John, Donnie, Bud and Garry Vanzant and Claude Smith.

Isaac A. “Ike” Vanzant

Clinchport , Va.- (Spl)- Isaac A. Vanzant, 44, farmer, died at the Kingsport hospital at 12:10 a.m. Monday [ 8/14/1950 .]

He was a son of Thomas and Rose Lyons Vanzant, who survive. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Beulah Gilreath Vanzarit: three brothers, Emmett of Kyles Ford, Tenn., Worley and William of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Jeff Horton, Fairview, Mrs. Coy Allen, Rogersville, Mrs. Howard Brotherton. Erwin , Tenn. , and Mrs. Dan Fisher, Blackwater , Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the home

with the Rev. Rand Mendenhall in charge. Burial will be in a family cemetery.

Jo Ann (Benton) Larkins Vanzant

TAMPA, Fla. — Jo Ann Larkins Vanzant, age 73, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Kingsport, passed away after an extended illness on Jan. 2, 2008.

She was born in Scott County, Va., to the late Willard T. and Margaret Falin Benton on Dec. 20, 1934. She was of the Methodist faith.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Larkins; her son, Scott Larkins; sister, Bobbie Francisco and brother, W. T. Benton.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Larkins Stewart of Atlanta, Ga., Susan Harrington and her husband Steven of Tampa, Fla.; her son, Steve Larkins; grandchildren, Ryan Harrington of Tampa, Fla., Crystal Larkins of Charleston, S.C., Nigel McElwee and wife Kristin of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Kaitlyn McElwee of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-law, Jack Francisco of Venice, Fla.; sister-in-law, Nell Hurd of Kingsport; step-sons, Matthew Vanzant and wife Sherry of Blackwater, Va., Randall Vanzant and wife Nina of Sneedville; step-grandchildren, Amanda, Maranda, Dylan, Ashley, and Will Vanzant.

Kay Edward "Rufus" Vanzant

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Rufus Vanzant, 70, entered into rest Friday (Nov. 11, 2005) at his residence.

He was born in Scott County, Va., Nov. 25, 1934, to the late Burlie and Edna Rhoton Vanzant. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.

Rufus retired from VDOT after 40 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Vanzant; and a sister, Adis Vanzant Woliver; and a nephew, Gary Vanzant.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Rosalee Vanzant, Clinchport; two sons, Eddie and wife Robin Vanzant, Gate City, Va., and Allen Vanzant of Clinchport; sisters, Georgia McMillan, Weber City, Va., Shelby Jean Lynch, Kingsport, Fannie and Douglas Russell, Hiltons, Va., and Judy Hensley, Hiltons, Va.; three grandchildren, Megan Vanzant, Heather Vanzant and Jacob Vanzant; three nephews and two nieces.

The family will be receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of Allen Vanzant.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley and Brother Jackie Frazier officiating. Eulogy will be given by Larry Vanzant.

Music will be provided by Brother Jackie and Linda Frazier with their daughter Courtney Shelton and Eddie Roberts.

Burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Franklin Cemetery, Purchase Ridge community. The family will be meeting at 1 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Maude M. (Horton) VanZant

Aug 5, 1918 – May 26, 2009

Maude M. VAN ZANT, age 90, of New Lebanon, OH, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, May 26, 2009. Born August 5, 1918 in Fairview, VA to the late Ivan & Nora (Jennings) Horton. She was a longtime member of the Drexel Church of the Nazarene. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband Emery M. Van Zant on June 5, 2003: brother Elwood Horton: sisters Mildred Greene, Otis White and Edith Horton.

Survived by children Martin J. Van Zant & wife Joyce of West Alexandria, OH; Jerry Van Zant & wife Debbie of Miamisburg, OH; and Charlotte Combs & husband Robin of New Lebanon: 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren: brother I. E. Horton of Blackwater, VA: sisters Vivian Willis of Eaton, OH; Carlene Horton, Edna Hurd and Naomi Harris all of Kingsport, TN.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, May 30, 2009 with Pastor Clyde O. Waites presiding. Interment Preble Memory Gardens Cemetery, West Alexandria.

Mamie Angeline (Salyer) Lane Vaughn

June 11, 1931 - April 25, 2015

Mamie Angeline Salyer Vaughn, age 84, born in Scott Co. VA, resident of Kingsport, TN, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 25, 2015 , at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport.

She was a member of the Weber City Church of God and accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age. She loved her family very much and will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vaughn; parents, Jesse and Roba Salyer; son, Larry Lane; and several siblings.

She is survived by her children, Grady Lane, Harold Lane and Thelma Martin; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City.

Funeral services will begin at 7:00 pm in the chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Spurrier Cemetery in Hiltons, VA.

Bud Daniel Vaughn

DUFFIELD, Va. - Bud Daniel Vaughn, 81, entered into eternal rest Saturday morning (May 15, 1999) at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport.

Born March 29, 1918 in Lee County, Va., he was a son of the late Tucker and Laura Fritz Vaughn . Mr. Vaughn was a retired miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Clarence and Herman Vaughn ; three sisters, Louise Mack, Dora Tomlinson and Martha Edens; three brothers, George, Bass and Willie Vaughn .

Surviving are his wife, Ida Bell Vaughn , Duffield, Va.; four daughters, Marie Ramey, Dryden, Va., Sue Burton, Hiltons, Va., Debbie Egan and Bobbie Payne, both of Duffield, Va.; five sons, Claude Vaughn , Church Hill, Leonard Vaughn , Bowling Green, Va., Jerry Vaughn , Clinchport, Va., Errett and Pete Vaughn , both of Weber City, Va.; two sisters, Bonnie Bloomer, Gaithersburg, Md. and Cordie Shufflebarger, Dryden, Va.; 30 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Claude C. Vaughn

February 6, 1945 - December 23, 2014

Claude C. Vaughn, 69, Church Hill, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Wise County, VA on February 6, 1945 to Bud and Ida Barnett Vaughn. Claude served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Robbins and brothers, Herman, Clarence, Jerry and Errett.

Claude is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mildred Ball Vaughn; son, Chris (Donna) Vaughn; daughter, Sheila (Micky) Carrico; grandson, Cody Vaughn; granddaughter, Sara Vaughn; two brothers, Pete (Edna) Vaughn of Gate City, VA, and Leonard (Ethel) Vaughn of Yuma, VA; three sisters, Debbie (JB) Egan of Duffield, VA, Sue Burton of Hiltons, VA, and Bobbie Payne of Duffield, VA; lots of nieces and nephews; and special friends, James Sullivan, Gary Gridley, Nathan Bachman, Roy Mutter and Jim Wilmoth.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. David Salley officiating. Military Rites will be by American Legion Posts 3/265.

Cornelius C. “Neil” Vaughn Jr.

Cornelius (Neil) C. Vaughn, Jr., of Phoenix , Arizona passed away on April 20, 2007 at the age of 79. Neil was one of eight children born to Cornelius C. Vaughn, Sr. and Ida Mae (Williams) Vaughn. Neil obtained his self reliant nature and love of family while growing up on the family farm in East Tennessee . Neil graduated from Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, TN, left Tennessee and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. In 1953, he married Mary Agnes Sharp, his devoted wife of 54 years. Neil attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, received a bachelor's degree in education from Arizona State University . Neil was an excellent, popular elementary math and social studies teacher in Phoenix for over 20 years. Neil was active in Toastmaster's International and North Phoenix Baptist Church for many years. He was an avid storyteller; his favorite stories were filled with colloquial humor and fond memories of his youth. He was a charismatic, approachable person who viewed strangers as friends he simply hadn't met. His home and heart were always open to his family and friends.

Neil is survived by his wife Mary Agnes Vaughn, siblings Ota, Ginny and Tom, sons David and Nathan, and grandchildren Michaela and Daniel. Private services will be held for immediate family this summer when Neil will be given his final rest in the Tennessee hills that he loved.

David Allen Vaughan

DUFFIELD, Va. — David Allen Vaughan was born on Jan. 29, 1960, and passed away on May 23, 2011, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

David was one of nine children given by the Lord to Sam Henry and Micca Alberta (Bertie) Vaughan of the Duffield community. Although David suffered much on this earth, he was always in the loving care of his parents. Today, the family rejoices that David has a newly restored body and is forever at home with his Heavenly Father.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Ann Vaughan; and a sister-in-law, Judy Vaughan.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Jewel Farris and husband, Stan (Wytheville, Va.), Juanita Keesling and husband, Richard (Kingsport), Eddie Vaughan (Kingsport), Bobby Vaughan (Duffield, Va.), Robert Vaughan and wife, Edna (Conyers, Ga.), Albert Vaughan (Wise, Va.), Larry Vaughan and wife, Kathy (Kingsport); along with many nieces, nephews and their children.

A private family graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Adams Cemetery in Duffield , Va. , with Pastor Robert Vaughan officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Doyle Ray Vaughn (1928-2012)

Duffield, VA - Doyle Ray Vaughn, 84, of Duffield, VA went to be with his heavenly Father, whom he served faithfully, Saturday, April 14, 2012 after an extended illness.

Doyle was born in Scott County, VA on January 19, 1928, the son of the late William Suthers and Maxie Messer Vaughn. Doyle enjoyed attending church at the Pentecostal Powerhouse and always prayed for lost souls. He also enjoyed gardening and being with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Doyle was preceded in death by his daughter; Shirley Ann Nufio, son; Marlin Vaughn, sisters; Norma Wilder, and Daisy Tomlinson, and brothers; Husler, Everett, William Suthers Jr., and Frank Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrtle Gilliam Vaughn, daughters; Margaret Coral McComas and special friend Jimmy Wright of Duffield, VA., Glenda and husband Ron Reams of Baltimore, MD., Carolyn and husband Charles Singleton of Duffield, VA., and Patricia and husband Dexter Egan of Duffield, VA, son; Roger and wife Brenda Vaughn of Duffield, VA., brother; Sam Henry and wife Alberta Vaughn of Yuma VA., twelve grandchildren; Marlin McComas, David McComas, Jimmy McGovern, Michael McGovern, Jimmy Cornwell, Dawn Hinkle, Charles Singleton Jr., Chastity Singleton, Linda Della Rosa, Roger Vaughn Jr., Ricky Taylor and Shaina Taylor, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Doyle Ray Vaughn (1945-2007)

BLACKWATER, Va. - Doyle Ray Vaughn, 62, of Dry Creek Road, passed away Sunday afternoon (April 1, 2007) after a long illness while at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 4, 1945, in Scott County, Va., and was the son of the late Husler and Mollie Vaughn. He was of the Baptist faith and a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Vaughn; and a sister, Mollie Doran.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Vaughn, of the home; three sons, Johnny Ray Vaughn and wife, Sharon of Baltimore, Md., Michael Heath Vaughn and Thomas Eugene Vaughn, both of Blackwater, Va.; five grandchildren, Amber, Alysha Mae, Johnny Donald, Christopher Ray and Nathan Allen; two sisters, Margie Horton of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Betty Sue Barnett and husband, Troy of Duffield, Va.; one brother,: Leonard Vaughn of Wise, Va.; several nieces, nephews and cousins and others also survive.

In keeping with Doyle's wishes, the body will be cremated and there will be no services at the funeral home, but a private ceremony for family members at a later time.

The family wishes to thank on Doyle's behalf, Kenneth Ray Horton for always being there when needed.

Duffield, VA -- Edith Pauline Vaughan, 95, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Albert Vaughan; children, Kenny Vaughan and Lavana Vaughan; and her parents, James and Elva Bishop.
She is survived by three sons, Verlen Vaughan, of Duffield, Rudy Vaughan, of Duffield, and Shannon Vaughan, of Big Stone Gap; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

GATE CITY, Va. — Errett "Eddie" Vaughn, 38, of Gate City, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday (Dec. 27, 2008) at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County. Eddie truly loved his kids!

Eddie Vaughn is survived by his two children, Amanda Vaughn and her fiancé, Tyler Grizzle, Josh Vaughn and his wife, Kayla; his parents, Errett Vaughn, Sr. and Debbie Vaughn (Gate City, Va.); his mother-in-law, Barbara Ash (Clinchport, Va.).

Harry Milligan Vaughn Jr.

CLINCHPORT - Harry Vaughn, 28, a former resident of Clinchport, died at his home in Roanoke Friday [Jan. 13, 1966].

He was employed at Miller's Box Factory at Roanoke.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Billie Wade Vaughn, and a son, Gary Lee Vaughn, both of Roanoke; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Vaughn Sr., a sister, Mrs. Jean Bishop and two brothers, Donald and Harley Vaughn, all of Clinchport.

Funeral services will he Sunday at 2 p.m. at Clinchport Methodist Church. Rev. Ervin Burke and Rev. Curtis Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.

BLOUNTVILLE -- Hillon W. Vaughn, 84, 2947 Hwy. 126, died Friday (Feb. 3, 1995) at his residence.

He was a native of Cherokee County, S.C. He had lived in this area for the past 36 years. He was a retired engineer from Sperry Corp. He was a Mason and member of Blonuntville Whiteside Lodge number 13.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blountville.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth F. Vaughn; two daughters, Nancy C. Williams, Nashville, Tenn., and Lucenda (Cindy) Hueber, Jacksonville, Fla.; one son, James I., Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Grace Vaughn, and Jean Jett, both of Gaffney, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church, Blountville, Tenn.

Born April 3, 1921, in Duffield, Va., she was the daughter of the late John and JoAnn Barnett Lane.

Janice (Powers) Vaughn

August 22, 1946 - February 14, 2014

Janice Vaughn, lovingly known as “Katie” to her immediate family, entered into rest unexpectedly following a lengthy illness on February 14, 2014 – Valentine’s Day, at Holston Valley in Kingsport, TN.

Janice was born on August 22, 1946, in Kingsport, TN, where she resided most of her life. She served the community though various church related duties and worked as a Deputy Clerk for Sullivan County. She was blessed to spend time with the children in her family and at church, helping others in any way that she could, enjoying nature and her dog Mingo and playing dolls with Bella. Janice dedicated her life sacrificially to helping others survive difficult times in their own lives. She was a member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church where she served in various volunteer capacities until her health would no longer permit. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit, her love for children, animals and nature and our hearts are simply broken by her loss.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Edna Powers, brothers-in- law Paul ‘Red’ Burchell and Gene Mottern, and sister Ruth P. Ford.

Surviving are her husband, Dallas Vaughn of the home, sister Emogene Mottern, niece and great niece Paula (Ford) and Bella Amador, who brought so much happiness to her life. Her family also includes step-daughters Angela Herringa, Tina Vaughn, Darla Vaughn, and Abby Vaughn Mullins and husband Brent; step-sons Doug Vaughn, Randy and Sharon Vaughn, Alan and Kristi Vaughn and Dean Vaughn; grandchildren Eric Vaughn, Amanda Vaughn Yarber, Scott Herringa, Rachel Herringa, Nicole Herringa, Rebekah Vaughn, Richard Holland, Athena Holland, Brooke Jones, Karah Mullins, Katie Mullins, Benjamin Vaughn, Devin Vaughn and several great grandchildren.

DUFFIELD, Va. — Jerry M. Vaughn, 46, of the Mabe community, died Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, he was a son of Ida Vaughn and the late Bud Vaughn. He retired from the Sherwood Press and was a former member of the Duffield Fire and Rescue Squad.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Vaughn.

KINGSPORT - June Calhoun Vaughn, 63, was born March 27, 1939 in Kingsport and died Saturday (Nov. 16, 2002) after an extended illness.

She was a kind and gentle lady who was loved by all who knew her. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Prior to her illness. she had been an active member of Antioch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William Hamilton Calhoun.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Mellie E. Vaughn, 81, 221 Jana Lane, Duffield, Va., died at Indian Path Hospital at 10:43 a.m. Friday (Oct. 16, 1987).

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. and was a
member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Vaughn in 1973 and her parents, Will and Lula Gibson Collins.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Alice) Burke, Dayton, Ohio; three sons, Charles Vaughn, San Diego, Calif., Paul Vaughn, Duffield, Va. and John C. Vaughn, Lewis, Texas; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Michael Douglas Vaughn

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Michael Otis Vaughan, 55, of Big Stone Gap, Va., went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning (Dec. 12, 2008) at his residence following a brave fight with cancer.

Otis was born on Oct. 15, 1953 in Lee County, Va. He had resided the majority of his life in Scott County, Va. He worked as an electrician in the coal mines all of his adult life and for the past 20 years he was employed by Paramont Coal Company. Mr. Vaughan was a devoted husband and father who was a loving son, brother and especially a faithful friend.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Suthers Vaughan along with his brother, Donnie Ray Vaughan.

A visitation will be held on Sunday at Scott County Funeral Home from 12 noon to 2 p.m. or friends may also call anytime at the residence.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Brother Garry Hood and Brother Stephen Caldwell officiating.

Milo Taylor Vaughn

DUFFIELD, Va. - Milo Taylor Vaughn, 82, entered into rest, Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at his residence.

He was the son of the late Samuel and Bessie Reynolds Vaughn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Ruefly and one sister, Maude Newton.

Mr. Vaughn was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Myrtle Jones Vaughn, Duffield, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Ruth Vaughn, Duffield, Va.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sisters, Virgie Bledsoe, Donna Ethel Skaggs, Stella Litton, Nell Hawkins, Rosalie Fannon, Hazel Collier and Jeanette Crenshaw; brothers, Samuel Vaughn, Jr. and Billy Vaughn; sister-in-law, Ruth Gilliam; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral Home, Inc. and other times at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Juanita S. Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Neeley officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Adams Cemetery, Duffield, Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Monnie Ruth ( Franklin ) Vaughn

BLOUNTVILLE — Monnie Ruth Franklin Vaughn , 92, passed away May 27, 2010 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Mrs. Vaughn was born in Gate City , Va. to parents Charles Patrick and Lucinda Franklin. She resided for many years in Blountville with her husband of 54 years, Hillon N. Vaughn , who passed away in 1995.

She is preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Bridwell, Ollie Martin; brothers, W.R. Franklin and C.E. Franklin.

Ruth was a loving mother to daughters, Nancy Williams (deceased), James Vaughn of Fuquay, N.C. and Cindy Hueber of Ponte Vedra, Fla. Her grand children are Brian Williams, Elizabeth Newman, Anna Rapp, Robert Vaughn and Benjamin Hueber; great-grand children, Jennifer, Jessica, Faith and Grayson Newman.

The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Blountville.

Funeral services will be held at the church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clay Austin officiating.

Interment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park .

Nannie Elizabeth (McGee) Vaughn

GATE CITY - Mrs. Nannie Elizabeth Vaughn, 68, died today [5/8/1967] at 6 a.m. in Holston Valley Community Hospital after a lingering illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a member of West End Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. James Cassell, one sister, Mrs. Mary Williams, one brother, Wesley McGee, and three grandchildren all of Gate City.

Norman Wesley Vaughn

KINGSPORT — Rev. Norman Wesley Vaughn, 72, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday afternoon, (Nov. 27, 2010) after a long illness.

Mr. Vaughn was born in Kingsport and had lived here all his life.

He graduated from Sullivan West High School in 1956 and Bob Jones University in 1963 with a B.A. in Theology. Mr. Vaughn was a former employee of Teague Electric Company, Alpha Electric Company and was owner/operator of Norman’s Electric Company.

He was a member of Homeland Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher and was former pastor of Faith Baptist Church , Blountville, and former associate pastor of Bible Baptist Church .

Rev. Vaughn was a loving husband, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Tom and Salome Dominick Vaughn; his sister, Juanita Vaughn; his brother, Charles B. Vaughn .

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mrs. Linda Templeton Vaughn of the home; his daughter, Mrs. Kimberly Vaughn Hobgood and husband, Chris of Atlanta . Ga.; his sons, C. Wesley Vaughn and wife, Lovey of Atlanta, Ga., and Norm Lee Vaughn and wife, Tina of Christiansburg, Va.; his grandchildren, Jon Vaughn , Josh Vaughn , Jordon Vaughn , Grayson Vaughn , Marlee Hobgood, Claire Vaughn , Riley Vaughn and Tess Vaughn ; one sister, Ms. Alice V. King of Riceville, Tenn.; along with several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Ralph L. Vaughn, 84, of Kingsport, passed away Monday (July, 30, 2007) at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Vaughn was born Feb. 20, 1923 in Buffalo, S.C. to parents Claude and Venus (Parsons) Vaughn and had resided in Kingsport most of his life.

Mr. Vaughn retired from J.P. Stevens after 41 years of service. He was also a member of Spring Dale Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Gott; son-in-law, George Eddie Davenport.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred Vaughn; four children, Lou Barber and her husband, Mike, Gail Davenport, Michael Vaughn and his wife, Becky, Dinah Barber and her husband, Matt, all of Kingsport; his mother, Venus Vaughn; 10 grandchildren, Tammy Oliver, Cheryl Crain, Lori Singleton, Robin Hopson, Amy Cornwell, Gordon Barber, Jason Barber, Jody Burke, Susan Holton and Tracy Riordan; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Hack Vaughn and his wife, Delores; brother-in-law, Karl Gott, all of Kingsport; two sisters, Lucille Crawford and her husband, Delbert, of Kingsport and Kathleen Brewer and her husband, Fred of Blountville.

Duffield, VA – Steve Albert Vaughan, born March 19, 1918, 93, went home to be in the loving arms of the Lord on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. His wife of 71 years, Edith Bishop Vaughan, was by his side at the time of his passing. He was known by many and loved by all. He was a devoted husband, father, and papaw who loved his family and the Lord.

He is also survived by his three sons, Verlen Vaughan of Duffield, VA, Rudy Vaughan of Duffield, VA and Shannon Vaughan of Big Stone Gap, VA; one brother, Roy Vaughan of Kingsport, TN; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Julie Vaughan; two children, Kenny Vaughan and Lavana Hurd, 4 brothers and 6 sisters.

Venus (Parsons) Vaughn

KINGSPORT — Venus Parsons Vaughn, 101, of Kingsport, passed away on March 15, 2009. She passed peacefully at her home with her loving family and caregivers by her side. The Lord Jesus Christ called her home to be a bright red rose in the rose garden of heaven.

Venus was born in Stickleyville, Va. on Dec. 26, 1907. Venus was married to and preceded in death by Claude G. Vaughn for 73 years. She was a loving, caring, nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend. She was the cornerstone of her family. She provided a healthy, loving, wholesome family environment with deep values and strong family principles.

She was of the Baptist faith and attended Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church in her earlier years.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Florence Martha Legg Parsons; one son, Ralph L. Vaughn; one daughter, Virginia A. Gott; daughter-in-law, Delores Estiline Vaughn; great-great-grandson, Jessee Crain, all of Kingsport; four brothers, Roy, Coy, Len and Walker Parsons; one sister, Vestea Parsons all of Stickleyville, Va.

Venus is survived by son, Hack Vaughn; daughters, M. Kathleen Brewer, Lucille F. Crawford; son-in-laws, Fred Brewer, Delbert Crawford, and Karl Gott; daughter-in-law, Mildred Vaughn; niece, Rowena Ringley; eight grandchildren, Lou Barber, Gail Davenport, Dinah Barber, Michael Vaughn, Dennis Crawford, Fredia Odham, and David Vaughn, all of Kingsport, and Terry Vaughn, of Houston, Tex.; nine nieces and nine nephews; 19 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow with Rev. Wayne Baker officiating.

Graveside services will be held following the funeral at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of Good Shepherd.

KINGSPORT — Wanda Faye Hammonds Vaughn, 70, passed from this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, (May 8, 2011) with her family by her side.

Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen Allen Hammonds and Frank Hobert Hammonds; one brother, Elbert Hammonds; and one sister, Virginia Ruth Boatwright.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 54 years, Donald Vaughn; two brothers, Ralph Hammonds and wife, Margaret and Alvin Hammonds and wife, Melzenia; four daughters, Debbie Rhea and husband, Buford, Teresa Frost and husband, David, Missy Vaughn and Tammy Jobe and husband, R.J.; two sons, Michael Vaughn and wife, Polly and Wayne Vaughn and wife, Lola; and thirteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m.

Marie (Quillen) Venable

Marie (Mrs. Ralph) Venable, 91, passed away early Monday morning (June 18, 2012).

Mrs. Venable was born in Scott County, VA on June 1, 1921, the daughter of the late James Hopkins Quillen and Emily Poston Quillen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Venable; an infant daughter, Carolyn Venable and daughter, Linda Venable Chase along with several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Venable was a homemaker and lived her entire life in Scott County.

Marie Venable is survived by her sons, Jerry Venable and his wife, Lana (Weber City, VA), Ronald Venable and his wife, Glenda (Kingsport, TN), Richard S. Alpha Blanche (Stallard) Vermillion

GATE CITY, Va. - Alpha Blanche Stallard Vermillion, 96, went to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at her residence.

She was a native of Scott County, Va., a former school teacher in the Scott County School System, and a former store owner.

She was a member of Midway Memorial United Methodist Church.

Alpha was a well-respected member of her community, who will be remembered for her quiet loving ways, and her never-ending ability to give of herself to whomever needed a helping hand or a listening ear.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie B. Vermillion; parents, Willard R. Stallard and Nancy E. Akers Stallard; sisters, Venus Nickels, Orpha Onks, Tenafair Haynes and Elva Alley; brothers, Malcolm Stallard, Woodrow Stallard and four infant brothers; son-in-law, John Fisher.

Surviving are her daughter, Rowena L. Fisher, Gate City; grandchildren, Barbara Stromberg, Anna Edwards and Janet Sapp, all of Gate City, Mary Sapp, Greeneville, James Sapp and Wade Fisher, both of Gate City; great-grandchildren, Michael Hertling, Heather Dougherty, Michael T. Benny Richard Vermillion Sr.

Gate City- Benny Richard Vermillion, Sr., 58, of East Carters Valley went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Sunday ( October 17, 2010 ) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County . Benny was a graduate of Gate City High School in 1972 where he was a proud member of the State Champion Football Team. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company with over 34 years of service. Mr. Vermillion was a born again Christian and was a member of Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church . He was an avid hunter & fisherman who more than anything loved to spend time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Lee Vermillion, Sr. & Amanda Gamble Vermillion; brother, Harry Lee Vermillion, Jr.; a sister, Gail Vermillion Howard.

HILTONS, Va. - Bobby Vermillion, 39, of Hiltons, Va., passed away Monday (April 11, 2011).

Born June 19, 1971, he was a self-employed brickmason.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Vermillion; grandparents, S.V. Jack and Mallie Vermillion and Ed and Nannie Noles.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Vermillion, Hiltons, Va.; wife, Rececca Vermillion; three daughters, Kayla, Ashley and Jessica Vermillion; one son, Alex Vermillion; brother, Dennis Vermillion; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In accordance with Bobby’s wishes he will be cremated with no formal funeral services.

Charles Eugene (Gene) Vermillion, 84, died on Thursday, March 17, 2011 , at Holston Manor Nursing Home in Kingsport .

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WW II on the USS Mission Bay. He was retired from Mason and Dixon Lines, Inc., in the late 60's and was of the Baptist Faith.

Charles was preceded in death by Alma Francis (Ann) Vermillion, his wife of 30 years; his parents, Clarence and Irene Vermillion and three sisters, Bertha Johnson, Janie Davis and Ottry Smith.

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Clovia Kate Pippin Vermillion , 85, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Friday ( Dec. 18, 2009 ) at Holston Valley Medical Center , Kingsport , after an extended illness.

Born in Scott County , Va, she resided in both, Southwest, Va. and Northeast, Tenn. all of her life. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Henry Vermillion ; four brothers; and six sisters.

Surviving is her son, Larry Vermillion and wife, Michelle; five grandchildren, Eric Vermillion , Rebecca Mcgehee, Kelsi Vermillion , McKenzie Vermillion , Matthew Baker; and two great-grandchildren.

GATE CITY, Va. - Clyde Vermillion, 122 Poplar Street, died: Wednesday (April 15, 1992) at; Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center after a lengthy illness. ;

A lifelong resident of Scott, County, Va., he was a retired mechanic from A.Y. Division of Tennessee Eastman Company with more than 30 years of service.

He was a member of Gate City Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mallie Gillenwater Vermillion, his parents, Rev. John and Sarah McDavid Vermillion, six brothers, Carley Vermillion, Henry Vermillion, Willie Vermillion, Robert Vermillion, Claude Vermillion and Clarence Vermillion; three sisters, Dove Kimbrell, Estil Skeens and Lula Peters.

Surviving are his wife, Nora Hart Vermillion; one daughter, Mrs. John (Bettie) Barger, Gate City, Va.; one granddaughter; two sisters, Rosie Jones, Gate City, Va. and Audie Caddy, Glendora, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Hilton, VA – Dennis Vermillion, age 45 of Hilton, VA passed away on Friday September 26, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.

Dennis was born in Kingsport, TN. He is preceded in death by his father, Samuel Edward Vermillion and a brother Bobby Vermillion.

He is survived by his mother Mary Ann Vermillion of the home; three nieces Kayla Vermillion, Ashley Vermillion and Jessica Vermillion; a nephew Alex Vermillion, also several aunts, uncles, cousins and several special friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday September 28, and Monday, September 29, 2014 from 2 to 6 PM at the home.

Erma (Gray) Vermillion

HAVERTOWN, Pa. - Erma Gray Vermillion, 92, passed away Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at her home in Havertown, Pa., after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Born on July, 1909 in Dungannon, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Lawrence and Eliza Victoria Stallard Gray. She had lived in Pennsylvania most of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Vermillion; one son, Ross Vermillion; a brother, Harold B. Gray; half brother, Victor Gray; and one grandson.

Surviving are three daughters, Thelma Matucci and Linda Strickland, both of Pennsylvania, and Ruth Whaley, of Delaware; three sons, Jimmy, Jerry and Jeffrey Vermillion, all of Pennsylvania; one brother, Quinton S. Gray, Kingsport; one sister, Ercil Fraley, Weber City, Va.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be conducted Wednesday at the Stretch Funeral Home, Havertown, Pa.

Burial will be at the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia, Pa.

Harry Lee Vermillion Jr.

EAST CARTERS VALLEY - Harry Lee Vermillion Jr., 62, E. Carters Valley Rd., went to be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness on Monday (Nov. 4, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center.

He was born in Sullivan County on April 14, 1940 to the late Harry Lee Vermillion Sr. and Amanda Jane Gamble Vermillion.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Vermillion Howard.

Mr. Vermillion was a master welder, taught welding at Scott County Vocational School and was a member of Virginia Education Association. He retired from the Scott County School Board system. He also served his country in the U.S. Army and was an avid hunter.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all. He was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Turner Vermillion, East Carters Valley, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Arthur Gramberg, Weber City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Jill Vermillion, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Kristen and Chelsea Gramberg and Tyler Vermillion; four sisters, Ann Davidson, Kingsport, Judy Porter, Conyers, Ga., Joyce Berry and Jennifer Quillen, both of Kingsport; brothers, Jack Vermillion, Kingsport, Gene and Benny Vermillion, both of East Carters Valley, Va.; special mother-in-law, Marie (Nanny) Turner; special aunt, Ruth Gamble; special uncle, Ralph Gamble; special caregiver, Doris Rimer; several nieces and nephews.

Henry Thorton Vermillion

Henry Thorton Vermillion, 62, of 1937 Ft. Robinson Drive, Kingsport, died approximately 4 a.m. Sunday at Holston Valley Community Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Born in Scott County, Va., he had been a resident of Kingsport most of his life and had attended Brookside Mission Church. He was a former employee of Kingsport Foundry as a machinist, having retired in March of 1980.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ward Vermillion, of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Ducie Vermillion and Mrs. Goldie Rogers, both of Kingsport.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Brookside Mission Church with the Rev. Jerry Scalf and the Rev. Bobby Vermillion officiating.

The body will remain at 1937 Ft. Robinson Dr., until services.

Burial will be in the Vermillion Family Cemetery, Maces Springs, Va.

Jackie “Jack” Edward Vermillion, 73, went to be with the Lord on Friday (July 3, 2015) after an extended illness. He was of the Baptist faith, and attended Mill Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Jack enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He enjoyed NASCAR racing (Jeff Gordon). Jack loved his wife and family.

He was preceded in in death by his parents, Harry Lee Vermillion, Sr & Amanda Janeeek Missionary Baptist Church (449 Church Rd. Fall Branch) from noon until 2 pm. Leona Mae ( Compton ) Vermillion

GATE CITY, Va. - Leona Mae Vermillion, 102, entered into rest Monday ( Dec. 12, 2005 ) at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol , Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Livingston Compton and Martha Gillenwater.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Delaney Vermillion; a sister, Eula McDonald; brothers, C.E. Compton, H.B. Compton and W.R. Compton.

Ms. Vermillion was a lifetime member of the UM Women Organization and joined the church in 1921. She was the oldest member of Gate City United Methodist Church . She truly loved the Lord.

She was also a lifelong Republican, having voted for the first time for Pres. Hurbert Hoover. She was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1970 by then Gov. Lonie B. Nunn.

Family always came first in her life. She was truly a remarkable lady and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was an avid gardener, enjoying her flowers, sharing them with friends and her church. She also enjoyed doing needlework.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Watson, Kingsport; grandchildren, Delaney and wife, Elaine Watson, Greeneville, and Charles Watson, Ft. Wright, Ky.; great-granddaughter, Cassandre Watson; and special caregiver, Faye Fansler, Yuma, Va.

The body will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gate City United Methodist Church and also will receive friends at other times at her residence.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. John Duvall and Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.

Music will be provided by Jim Belt Baker.

A private graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery .

Hiltons, VA - Levi Jacob Vermillion, 28, went to be with the Lord Sunday,August 11,2013. He was born January 20,1985 in Kingsport, TN. He was a wonderful husband and father to his family whom he loved dearly. Levi was a church member at Victory Baptist Church where he was saved and baptized.

Levi was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Carl Lane, and uncle Harold Lane, paternal great-grandparents Helen and John Baker.

He is survived by his wife Brittany Franklin Vermillion of Hiltons, daughters Riley Grace and Addison Laine Vermillion of the home, mother Donna Lane Bewley and step-father Richard of Mt. She was born on Jan. 30, 1911 in Scott County, Va. She attended Orebank Central Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, who was first in her life, and her family dearly.

She was a homemaker and loved and enjoyed quiltmaking, crocheting, gardening, canning and working in her flowers.

She was born in Washington County, Va., on Sept. 5, 1908, the daughter of the late William Bill and Hattie Smith Hurt. She retired as a nurses aide from Hicks Nursing Home.

Mrs. Vermillion was a dedicated Christian lady and attended several different churches in the community.

ROGERSVILLE - Walter Clyde Vermillion, 62, of 176 Old Highway 11W, passed away Saturday (June 12, 2004) at the Church Hill Health Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Vermillion was a native of Scott County, Va., but had spent most of his adult life in Sullivan and Hawkins Counties. He was a member of Phipps Bend Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired employee of I.B.E.W.

WEBER CITY -- Herman E. Vest Jr., 40, of Weber City, died at his residence at 9 p.m. Tuesday [June 27, 1978] following a brief illness.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, he was a member of the Holiness Church.  His mother, Mrs. Vesta Templeton Vest, died March 29, 1978.

Survivors include several aunts, uncles and cousins.

HILTONS, Va. - Anna Flo (Fraley) Vicars , 70, died Thursday (May 27, 1999) in Wellmont Hospice in Bristol.

Born Feb. 17, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Otis Fraley and Ercil Fraley of Weber City, Va. She operated the concession for 25 years at the Carter Fold.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Vicars ; one sister, Virginia Kilgore; and one brother, Bill Fraley.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Brent Virts, Lebanon, Va., and Valerie and Patrick Blalock, Raleigh, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Judy Vicars , Hiltons, Va., and Greg and Michelle Vicars , Kingsport; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Dougherty, Weber City, Va., and Sue Fraley, Kingsport; three brothers, J.C. NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Audrey Clarice Vicars, 90, Route 2, departed this life Tuesday evening (Oct. 21, 2003) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a native of Scott County, Va., and was the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and did volunteer work at Holston Valley Hospital and area nursing homes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence McConnell and Oshia Davidson McConnell; and husband, Dalmas Vicars.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy Beckner, Church Hill; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Karen Vicars, Kingsport; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Cleo Mann, Gate City, Va., Mrs. Ruth Kilgore and husband Dwight Kilgore, Gate City, Va.; brother, H.L. Mr. Vicars was a member of First Baptist Church of Bluff City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Crockett Vicars.

Born in Scott County (Blackwater), Va., she moved to this area at an early age. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church (Blackwater).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theadore R. Vicars ; her parents, sisters and brothers.

Jennifer "Jen" LeAnn Vicars, 44, died Friday, September 25, 2009 following an extended illness.

Born August 4, 1965 to Lowell and Rosemary Vicars, she had been a resident most of her life. Jen was a 1983 graduate of Sullivan North High School and a former jewelry designer.

Jen was a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, godmother, daughter, aunt and sister.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents, James Kyle and Edna Vicars; maternal grandparents, Sam and Lorene Taylor; favorite aunt, Nell Elkins; maternal aunt, Patsy Chaffin; maternal uncle and aunt, Benny and Charlotte Taylor; and paternal uncle, Cleve Alvis.

Survivors include her son, Jamison "Jamey" Vicars; parents, Lowell and Rosemary Vicars; sister, Dawn Hodges and husband Tim; brothers, Chris Vicars and wife Brooke, Darin Vicars and wife Tonya; nieces, Taylor Hodges, Mikayleigh Mounger and Kinzee Mounger; nephews, Caleb Hodges and Kyle Mounger; aunts and uncles, Shelby and Lee Smith, Phyllis and Roy Marshall; godson, Les Russell; father of her son, Tom Addington, Jr.; and many other loving relatives and friends.

JOHNSON CITY — John Fred Vicars, 79, of Gray, passed away Monday, (Feb. 11, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born April 8, 1928 in Kingsport, the son of the late Anthony and Viva Taylor Vicars. He had lived in this area most of his life. Mr. Vicars was retired from Eastman and had attended Christian Fellowship Church.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Scott Vicars; and a sister, Jewel Bledsoe.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mayme Jean Vicars; three children, Jane Vicars Portwood and husband, David of Chattanooga, Ruth Vicars Davenport and husband, Jack of Harrison, Tenn. and John E. Vicars of Gray; two grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah Portwood, both of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Snyder’s Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow with Elmer Lester and Pat Hull officiating.

Lowell Vicars

October 25, 1940 - July 30, 2013

Lowell Vicars, 72, Kingsport, passed away while surrounded by his family Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Fort Blackmore, VA, he had resided in Kingsport most of his life. Lowell was a 1958 graduate of Lynn View High School and had attended East Tennessee State University. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2002 following 45 years of service.

Lowell was a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the North Kingsport Volunteer Fire Department and various other community organizations. Lowell will be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, dad, papaw, brother, uncle, friend and mentor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Vicars; daughter, Jennifer Vicars; granddaughter, Taylor Hodges; parents, Kyle and Edna Vicars; brother, Howard Vicars, and brother-in-law, Cleve Alvis.

He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Hodges and husband Tim of Kingsport; sons, Chris Vicars and wife Brooke of Church Hill and Darin Vicars and wife Tonya of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jamey Vicars, Kyle Mounger, Caleb Hodges, Mikayleigh Mounger and Kinzee Mounger; one sister, Shelby Smith and husband Lee of Jonesborough; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins; and many, many friends.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church and at other times at the home of Chris and Brooke Vicars. Mrs. Maggie Vicars, 87, 608 Lynn Garden Drive , died at 2 a.m. Sun­day [abt 1974] at her home following a lengthy illness.

ABINGDON, Va. - Mauriece Quillen Vicars, 89, entered into rest at Abingdon Manor on March 22, 2007. She had been a resident of Abingdon Manor for a number of years following a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1917 in Gate City, Va. to the late Maunie Compton Quillen and Frank Ewing Quillen. She was a graduate of Shoemaker High School and was a Christian since childhood.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Vicars in 1967; and her son, John William Vicars, in April 2003. Her paternal grandparents were John B. and Adelade Quillen and her maternal grandparents were William Albert and Eliza Compton. Her sister, Leora Hilton and brother, Ferris Quillen, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Judith Vicars, of Gate City, Va.; and her grandchildren, Rebecca Lawson, of Ft. Blackmore, Va., Gayle Ervin, of Weber City and John Daniel Vicars, of Gate City, Va. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eva Quillen of Kingsport; and several nephews and cousins.

Minnie Pearl (Compton) Vicars

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Minnie Pearl Vicars, 93, passed away peacefully early Friday morning (Oct. 6, 2006) while at the Brian Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City, Va.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, Va., she was born April 3, 1913 and was a daughter of the late Jasper Marian and Mary Elizabeth Kennedy Compton. She was graduated from the Nickelsville High School, Class of 1932.

She was a charter member and the oldest surviving member of the Meade's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elmer Vicars; one sister, Jennie Odle; one grandson, Rusty Vicars; and one nephew, Jeff Wood.

She is survived by her son, Larry Vicars and wife Ann of Gate City, Va.; one grandchild, Wendy Gaines and husband Lathrop of Warrenton, Va.; one great-grandchild, Ashley Gaines; special niece, Mary Lou Wood and husband Don, of Nickelsville, Va. who were also her caregivers; niece, Mildred Quillen of Weber City, Va.; nephew, Pete Odle and wife, Nancy of Nickelsville, Va.; one great-niece, Jane Quillen and husband, Jackie of Kingsport; one great-nephew, Scott Odle and wife, Tonya of Gate City, Va.; one special friend, Ed Murray of Kingsport.

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Olin K. Vicars, 68, of Greencastle, passed away Friday morning.

Born May 7, 1939 in Lee County, Va., he was the son of Theodore R. and Callie Lou (Robinette) Vicars. He recently celebrated 49 years of marriage to Bonnie Marie (Egan) Vicars, whom he married on Aug. 11, 1958 and she survives.

Mr. Vicars was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was a truck driver for National By-Products in Indianapolis for 23 years, retiring in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy Allen Vicars; a grandson, Joshua Matthew Vicars; sister, Bertie Mae Keeling; and his father-in-law, Kinley H. Egan.

Survivors other than his wife are a son, Kenneth Wayne Vicars and wife, Tina of Greenfield, Ind.; three brothers, Joel Lee Vicars and wife, Julia, J.R. Vicars and wife, Edna, and Oscar A. Vicars and wife, Carolyn, all of Kingsport.; three sisters, Hassie G. Morgan of Knoxville, Shelby Jean Thomas and husband, Larry, and Eula Onita Gray and husband, Jr., both of Kingsport; mother-in-law, Hattie Egan of Kingsport; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; seven step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greenscastle, Ind., with a Masonic Lodge service to be held at 7 p.m.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Ron Mills officiating.

Interment with full military rites will be in the Little Walnut Cemetery in Greencastle, Ind.

Rosemary (Taylor) Vicars

Rosemary Vicars, 72, of Kingsport, passed away surrounded by her family Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Sullivan County, TN on April 27, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Sam Taylor and Lorene Elkins Taylor.

Rosemary was a homemaker and a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife, mom, “gana”, and friend who decorated cakes, arranged flowers, and a mother to anyone who would allow her to be.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Vicars; granddaughter, Taylor Hodges; brother, Benny Taylor and wife Charlotte; sisters, Patsy Chaffin and Phyllis Marshall and husband Roy.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lowell Vicars; children, Dawn Hodges and husband Tim of Kingsport, Chris Vicars and wife Brooke of Church Hill, and Darin Vicars and wife Tonya of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jamey Vicars, Kyle Mounger, Caleb Hodges, Mikayleigh Mounger, and Kinzee Mounger; an aunt, Edith Mae “Sis” Stewart of Clinchport, VA; a sister-in-law, Shelby Smith and husband Lee of Jonesborough; a brother-in-law, Lincoln Chaffin of Gray; several nieces and nephews; numerous other relatives and friends; and her dog “Ginger”.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church and at other times at the home of Chris and Brooke Vicars. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Ray Amos, Jr., Rev. Bill Porter, and Rev. Roy Fowler officiating. Music will be provided by Kim Amos, Dick Blaney, and Cynthia Berry.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Those attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m.

Ruby Aleese (Moody) Vicars

Ruby Aleese Moody Vicars, 90, who was a lifelong resident of Hiltons, Virginia, passed away Saturday (July 16, 2011) at Holston Manor in Kingsport.

She was a fabulous cook who loved to feed the entire community. Ruby truly loved all her neighbors, and especially their children. She was a member of Barker’s Chapel Evangelical Methodist Church.

Mrs. Vicars was preceded in death by her husband, Crockett Vicars; a son, Benny Vicars; her grandson, Michael Peters; parents, Walter and Laura Larkey Moody; a brother, Russell Moody.

Ruby Vicars is survived by her daughter, Sue Peters & husband Clyde (Groves, Texas); Willis Vicars & wife Judy (Kingsport, TN): three grandchildren; Ed Peters and wife Lynn; Ernie Peters; Adam Vicars and wife Sarah; seven great grandchildren; one sister Bonnie Fugate (Hiltons, VA) along with two nieces and a nephew.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday (July 20, 2011) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home.

Infant Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Vicars Dies - Burial Tomorrow

Rubie Kate Vicars, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Vicars, residing on Johnston Street in the Spring Parks Heights addition, died at the home of her parents last night about 11:30 o'clock.

The baby will be buried in Scott County, Va., tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock.

Sabrina Dawn Vicars

KINGSPORT — Sabrina Dawn Vicars, 36, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Monday (June 15, 2009) at her residence after an extended illness.

Sabrina was a lifelong resident of Kingsport, graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She was employed by City of Kingsport Department of Education. Sabrina was a member of Fort Robinson Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother and father, Karen Hartsock Vicars and Gary W. Vicars of Kingsport; one son, Brayden Andrew Buckles, of the home; father of her son, Eric Buckles; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Robinson Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Wallen and Rev. Frank Proffitt officiating.

Music will be provided by the church choir.

Charles Vance Vineyard

February 9, 1941 - October 5, 2014

Charlie Vineyard, 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior (Sunday October 5th, 2014) where his faith became sight.

A native of Scott County, he lived in East TN most of his life. He graduated from Ketron High School in 1959; and in that same year he went to work for Eastman Chemical Company. He retired in 1995 after 36 years of service. He attended Salem United Methodist Church.

Charlie enjoyed the mountains and vacations to the beach. He loved camping in the great outdoors. However, the most important thing to him, everything he did, was for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vance and Edna Vineyard; sister, Phyllis Hammonds; twin sons, Jeffrey and Gregory and special brother in law, Perry McClain

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Shirley Vineyard; two daughters, Donna Robinson and husband Dennis and Earline Haga and husband Larry; son, Mark Vineyard and wife Nancy Lynn; grandchildren, Christy Tankersley, Cortney Vineyard, Kayla Haga and Cody Vineyard; two sisters, Nancy Hood and Barbara Hawkins and husband Edgar; two special brothers in law, Paul Baxter and wife Janice and Bobby Baxter and wife Margaret; sister in law, Virginia McClain; brother in law, Don Hammonds and several nieces and nephews

BATON ROUGE, La. - Betty Jennings Vince, 72, formerly of Gate City, Va., entered into rest Friday ( Jan. 18, 2002 ) at her home in Baton Rouge .

Born June 18, 1929 in Scott County , Va. , she was a daughter of the late William and Mattie Jennings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis M. Vince; and a son, Randall M. Vince.

Surviving are a daughter, Scotty Vince Hebert and husband Richard; a son, Pruitt T. Vince, Los Angeles , Calif. ; a brother, Robert N. Jennings, Gate City , Va. ; and two grandchildren, Alexander and John Hebert.

The family received friends Sunday ( Jan. 20, 2002 ) at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, Baton Rouge .

CHURCH HILL - Gracie Amos Vinson, 85, died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at Church Hill Life Care after a brief illness.

Ms. Vinson was born in Scott County, Va., and had been a member of the Christian Life Center for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Amos; a daughter, Nellie Ruth Roberts; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
