Claude C. Vaughn, 69, Church Hill, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Wise County, VA on February 6, 1945 to Bud and Ida Barnett Vaughn. Claude served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Robbins and brothers, Herman, Clarence, Jerry and Errett.

Claude is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mildred Ball Vaughn; son, Chris (Donna) Vaughn; daughter, Sheila (Micky) Carrico; grandson, Cody Vaughn; granddaughter, Sara Vaughn; two brothers, Pete (Edna) Vaughn of Gate City, VA, and Leonard (Ethel) Vaughn of Yuma, VA; three sisters, Debbie (JB) Egan of Duffield, VA, Sue Burton of Hiltons, VA, and Bobbie Payne of Duffield, VA; lots of nieces and nephews; and special friends, James Sullivan, Gary Gridley, Nathan Bachman, Roy Mutter and Jim Wilmoth.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. David Salley officiating. Military Rites will be by American Legion Posts 3/265.

Cornelius (Neil) C. Vaughn, Jr., of Phoenix , Arizona passed away on April 20, 2007 at the age of 79. Neil was one of eight children born to Cornelius C. Vaughn, Sr. and Ida Mae (Williams) Vaughn. Neil obtained his self reliant nature and love of family while growing up on the family farm in East Tennessee . Neil graduated from Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, TN, left Tennessee and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. In 1953, he married Mary Agnes Sharp, his devoted wife of 54 years. Neil attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, received a bachelor's degree in education from Arizona State University . Neil was an excellent, popular elementary math and social studies teacher in Phoenix for over 20 years. Neil was active in Toastmaster's International and North Phoenix Baptist Church for many years. He was an avid storyteller; his favorite stories were filled with colloquial humor and fond memories of his youth. He was a charismatic, approachable person who viewed strangers as friends he simply hadn't met. His home and heart were always open to his family and friends.

Neil is survived by his wife Mary Agnes Vaughn, siblings Ota, Ginny and Tom, sons David and Nathan, and grandchildren Michaela and Daniel. Private services will be held for immediate family this summer when Neil will be given his final rest in the Tennessee hills that he loved.

DUFFIELD, Va. — David Allen Vaughan was born on Jan. 29, 1960, and passed away on May 23, 2011, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

David was one of nine children given by the Lord to Sam Henry and Micca Alberta (Bertie) Vaughan of the Duffield community. Although David suffered much on this earth, he was always in the loving care of his parents. Today, the family rejoices that David has a newly restored body and is forever at home with his Heavenly Father.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Ann Vaughan; and a sister-in-law, Judy Vaughan.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Jewel Farris and husband, Stan (Wytheville, Va.), Juanita Keesling and husband, Richard (Kingsport), Eddie Vaughan (Kingsport), Bobby Vaughan (Duffield, Va.), Robert Vaughan and wife, Edna (Conyers, Ga.), Albert Vaughan (Wise, Va.), Larry Vaughan and wife, Kathy (Kingsport); along with many nieces, nephews and their children.

A private family graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Adams Cemetery in Duffield , Va. , with Pastor Robert Vaughan officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Duffield, VA - Doyle Ray Vaughn, 84, of Duffield, VA went to be with his heavenly Father, whom he served faithfully, Saturday, April 14, 2012 after an extended illness.

Doyle was born in Scott County, VA on January 19, 1928, the son of the late William Suthers and Maxie Messer Vaughn. Doyle enjoyed attending church at the Pentecostal Powerhouse and always prayed for lost souls. He also enjoyed gardening and being with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Doyle was preceded in death by his daughter; Shirley Ann Nufio, son; Marlin Vaughn, sisters; Norma Wilder, and Daisy Tomlinson, and brothers; Husler, Everett, William Suthers Jr., and Frank Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrtle Gilliam Vaughn, daughters; Margaret Coral McComas and special friend Jimmy Wright of Duffield, VA., Glenda and husband Ron Reams of Baltimore, MD., Carolyn and husband Charles Singleton of Duffield, VA., and Patricia and husband Dexter Egan of Duffield, VA, son; Roger and wife Brenda Vaughn of Duffield, VA., brother; Sam Henry and wife Alberta Vaughn of Yuma VA., twelve grandchildren; Marlin McComas, David McComas, Jimmy McGovern, Michael McGovern, Jimmy Cornwell, Dawn Hinkle, Charles Singleton Jr., Chastity Singleton, Linda Della Rosa, Roger Vaughn Jr., Ricky Taylor and Shaina Taylor, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

BLACKWATER, Va. - Doyle Ray Vaughn, 62, of Dry Creek Road, passed away Sunday afternoon (April 1, 2007) after a long illness while at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 4, 1945, in Scott County, Va., and was the son of the late Husler and Mollie Vaughn. He was of the Baptist faith and a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Vaughn; and a sister, Mollie Doran.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Vaughn, of the home; three sons, Johnny Ray Vaughn and wife, Sharon of Baltimore, Md., Michael Heath Vaughn and Thomas Eugene Vaughn, both of Blackwater, Va.; five grandchildren, Amber, Alysha Mae, Johnny Donald, Christopher Ray and Nathan Allen; two sisters, Margie Horton of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Betty Sue Barnett and husband, Troy of Duffield, Va.; one brother,: Leonard Vaughn of Wise, Va.; several nieces, nephews and cousins and others also survive.

In keeping with Doyle's wishes, the body will be cremated and there will be no services at the funeral home, but a private ceremony for family members at a later time.

GATE CITY, Va. — Errett "Eddie" Vaughn, 38, of Gate City, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday (Dec. 27, 2008) at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County. Eddie truly loved his kids!

Eddie Vaughn is survived by his two children, Amanda Vaughn and her fiancé, Tyler Grizzle, Josh Vaughn and his wife, Kayla; his parents, Errett Vaughn, Sr. and Debbie Vaughn (Gate City, Va.); his mother-in-law, Barbara Ash (Clinchport, Va.).

Janice Vaughn, lovingly known as “Katie” to her immediate family, entered into rest unexpectedly following a lengthy illness on February 14, 2014 – Valentine’s Day, at Holston Valley in Kingsport, TN.

Janice was born on August 22, 1946, in Kingsport, TN, where she resided most of her life. She served the community though various church related duties and worked as a Deputy Clerk for Sullivan County. She was blessed to spend time with the children in her family and at church, helping others in any way that she could, enjoying nature and her dog Mingo and playing dolls with Bella. Janice dedicated her life sacrificially to helping others survive difficult times in their own lives. She was a member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church where she served in various volunteer capacities until her health would no longer permit. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit, her love for children, animals and nature and our hearts are simply broken by her loss.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Edna Powers, brothers-in- law Paul ‘Red’ Burchell and Gene Mottern, and sister Ruth P. Ford.

Surviving are her husband, Dallas Vaughn of the home, sister Emogene Mottern, niece and great niece Paula (Ford) and Bella Amador, who brought so much happiness to her life. Her family also includes step-daughters Angela Herringa, Tina Vaughn, Darla Vaughn, and Abby Vaughn Mullins and husband Brent; step-sons Doug Vaughn, Randy and Sharon Vaughn, Alan and Kristi Vaughn and Dean Vaughn; grandchildren Eric Vaughn, Amanda Vaughn Yarber, Scott Herringa, Rachel Herringa, Nicole Herringa, Rebekah Vaughn, Richard Holland, Athena Holland, Brooke Jones, Karah Mullins, Katie Mullins, Benjamin Vaughn, Devin Vaughn and several great grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 1:00 pm with Father Mike Nolan officiating.

A graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA.

KINGSPORT - June Calhoun Vaughn, 63, was born March 27, 1939 in Kingsport and died Saturday (Nov. 16, 2002) after an extended illness.

She was a kind and gentle lady who was loved by all who knew her. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Prior to her illness. she had been an active member of Antioch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William Hamilton Calhoun.

Surviving are three children: sons, Teddy Vaughn, Gate City, Va., and Nicholas Vaughn, Kingsport; daughter, Karen Carter, Church Hill; eight grandchildren; her parents, Rudolph and Stella Calhoun, Gate City, Va.; four sisters, Sue Thomas, Martha Elliot, Anita McGhee and Kathy Hite, all of Gate City, Va.; three brothers, Roby Calhoun and Scottie Calhoun, both of Church Hill, and R.S. Calhoun, Gate City, Va.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Mellie E. Vaughn, 81, 221 Jana Lane, Duffield, Va., died at Indian Path Hospital at 10:43 a.m. Friday (Oct. 16, 1987).

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va. and was a
member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Vaughn in 1973 and her parents, Will and Lula Gibson Collins.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Alice) Burke, Dayton, Ohio; three sons, Charles Vaughn, San Diego, Calif., Paul Vaughn, Duffield, Va. and John C. Vaughn, Lewis, Texas; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel Duffield Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Starnes officiating.

Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.

(Mellie was a granddaughter of Kate Lula (Gibson) Gibson; Kate was a daughter of Archibald Gibson and his first wife Sarah Lane. The parents of Sarah (Lane) Gibson have not been identified by me.)

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Michael Otis Vaughan, 55, of Big Stone Gap, Va., went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning (Dec. 12, 2008) at his residence following a brave fight with cancer.

Otis was born on Oct. 15, 1953 in Lee County, Va. He had resided the majority of his life in Scott County, Va. He worked as an electrician in the coal mines all of his adult life and for the past 20 years he was employed by Paramont Coal Company. Mr. Vaughan was a devoted husband and father who was a loving son, brother and especially a faithful friend.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Suthers Vaughan along with his brother, Donnie Ray Vaughan.

Michael Otis Vaughan is survived by his loving wife, Clora Boggs Vaughan; his sons, Nathan Vaughan, Anthony Vaughan (both of the home), Michael Vaughn and his wife, Alisha (Bristol, Tenn.), Sean Thomas and his wife, Lisa (Bluff City, Tenn.), Christopher Thomas (Mountain City, Tenn.); his daughter, Stephanie Vaughan Johnson and her husband, Jeffery (Gate City); several grandsons and granddaughters; his mother, Gladys Vaughan (Duffield, Va.); a sister, Lana Poser (Church Hill); brothers, Ronald Vaughan (Kingsport), Douglas Glen Vaughan and his wife, Sarah (Wise, Va.), Curtis Gene Vaughan and his wife, Teresa (Clinchport, Va.); several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Milo Taylor Vaughn, 82, entered into rest, Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at his residence.

He was the son of the late Samuel and Bessie Reynolds Vaughn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Ruefly and one sister, Maude Newton.

Mr. Vaughn was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Myrtle Jones Vaughn, Duffield, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Ruth Vaughn, Duffield, Va.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sisters, Virgie Bledsoe, Donna Ethel Skaggs, Stella Litton, Nell Hawkins, Rosalie Fannon, Hazel Collier and Jeanette Crenshaw; brothers, Samuel Vaughn, Jr. and Billy Vaughn; sister-in-law, Ruth Gilliam; and several nieces and nephews.

BLOUNTVILLE — Monnie Ruth Franklin Vaughn , 92, passed away May 27, 2010 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Mrs. Vaughn was born in Gate City , Va. to parents Charles Patrick and Lucinda Franklin. She resided for many years in Blountville with her husband of 54 years, Hillon N. Vaughn , who passed away in 1995.

She is preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Bridwell, Ollie Martin; brothers, W.R. Franklin and C.E. Franklin.

Ruth was a loving mother to daughters, Nancy Williams (deceased), James Vaughn of Fuquay, N.C. and Cindy Hueber of Ponte Vedra, Fla. Her grand children are Brian Williams, Elizabeth Newman, Anna Rapp, Robert Vaughn and Benjamin Hueber; great-grand children, Jennifer, Jessica, Faith and Grayson Newman.

The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Blountville.

Funeral services will be held at the church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clay Austin officiating.

Interment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park .

GATE CITY - Mrs. Nannie Elizabeth Vaughn, 68, died today [5/8/1967] at 6 a.m. in Holston Valley Community Hospital after a lingering illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a member of West End Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. James Cassell, one sister, Mrs. Mary Williams, one brother, Wesley McGee, and three grandchildren all of Gate City.

KINGSPORT — Rev. Norman Wesley Vaughn, 72, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday afternoon, (Nov. 27, 2010) after a long illness.

Mr. Vaughn was born in Kingsport and had lived here all his life.

He graduated from Sullivan West High School in 1956 and Bob Jones University in 1963 with a B.A. in Theology. Mr. Vaughn was a former employee of Teague Electric Company, Alpha Electric Company and was owner/operator of Norman’s Electric Company.

He was a member of Homeland Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher and was former pastor of Faith Baptist Church , Blountville, and former associate pastor of Bible Baptist Church .

Rev. Vaughn was a loving husband, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Tom and Salome Dominick Vaughn; his sister, Juanita Vaughn; his brother, Charles B. Vaughn .

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mrs. Linda Templeton Vaughn of the home; his daughter, Mrs. Kimberly Vaughn Hobgood and husband, Chris of Atlanta . Ga.; his sons, C. Wesley Vaughn and wife, Lovey of Atlanta, Ga., and Norm Lee Vaughn and wife, Tina of Christiansburg, Va.; his grandchildren, Jon Vaughn , Josh Vaughn , Jordon Vaughn , Grayson Vaughn , Marlee Hobgood, Claire Vaughn , Riley Vaughn and Tess Vaughn ; one sister, Ms. Alice V. KINGSPORT - Ralph L. Vaughn, 84, of Kingsport, passed away Monday (July, 30, 2007) at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Vaughn retired from J.P. Stevens after 41 years of service. He was also a member of Spring Dale Baptist Church.

Duffield, VA – Steve Albert Vaughan, born March 19, 1918, 93, went home to be in the loving arms of the Lord on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. His wife of 71 years, Edith Bishop Vaughan, was by his side at the time of his passing. He was known by many and loved by all. He was a devoted husband, father, and papaw who loved his family and the Lord.

He is also survived by his three sons, Verlen Vaughan of Duffield, VA, Rudy Vaughan of Duffield, VA and Shannon Vaughan of Big Stone Gap, VA; one brother, Roy Vaughan of Kingsport, TN; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Julie Vaughan; two children, Kenny Vaughan and Lavana Hurd, 4 brothers and 6 sisters.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm Monday , Nov. 7, 2011 at the Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, VA. Funeral services will follow at 1 pm in the chapel of the funeral home with James Ruyon officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Bishop Family Cemetery in Jasper, VA

KINGSPORT — Venus Parsons Vaughn, 101, of Kingsport, passed away on March 15, 2009. She passed peacefully at her home with her loving family and caregivers by her side. The Lord Jesus Christ called her home to be a bright red rose in the rose garden of heaven.

Venus was born in Stickleyville, Va. on Dec. 26, 1907. Venus was married to and preceded in death by Claude G. Vaughn for 73 years. She was a loving, caring, nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend. She was the cornerstone of her family. She provided a healthy, loving, wholesome family environment with deep values and strong family principles.

She was of the Baptist faith and attended Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church in her earlier years.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Florence Martha Legg Parsons; one son, Ralph L. Vaughn; one daughter, Virginia A. Gott; daughter-in-law, Delores Estiline Vaughn; great-great-grandson, Jessee Crain, all of Kingsport; four brothers, Roy, Coy, Len and Walker Parsons; one sister, Vestea Parsons all of Stickleyville, Va.

Venus is survived by son, Hack Vaughn; daughters, M. Kathleen Brewer, Lucille F. Crawford; son-in-laws, Fred Brewer, Delbert Crawford, and Karl Gott; daughter-in-law, Mildred Vaughn; niece, Rowena Ringley; eight grandchildren, Lou Barber, Gail Davenport, Dinah Barber, Michael Vaughn, Dennis Crawford, Fredia Odham, and David Vaughn, all of Kingsport, and Terry Vaughn, of Houston, Tex.; nine nieces and nine nephews; 19 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow with Rev. Wayne Baker officiating.

Music will be provided by Alvin Goins.

Graveside services will be held following the funeral at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of Good Shepherd.

KINGSPORT — Wanda Faye Hammonds Vaughn, 70, passed from this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, (May 8, 2011) with her family by her side.

Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen Allen Hammonds and Frank Hobert Hammonds; one brother, Elbert Hammonds; and one sister, Virginia Ruth Boatwright.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 54 years, Donald Vaughn; two brothers, Ralph Hammonds and wife, Margaret and Alvin Hammonds and wife, Melzenia; four daughters, Debbie Rhea and husband, Buford, Teresa Frost and husband, David, Missy Vaughn and Tammy Jobe and husband, R.J.; two sons, Michael Vaughn and wife, Polly and Wayne Vaughn and wife, Lola; and thirteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 12 noon with Pastor Raymond Hammonds officiating.

Following the funeral service, the family will go in procession to Church Hill Memory Gardens where Mrs. Vaughn will be laid to rest.

Her grandsons, Frank, Bobby, Anthony, Donny, T.J. and Jason will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be her youngest grandsons, Austin and Hunter.

Marie (Mrs. Ralph) Venable, 91, passed away early Monday morning (June 18, 2012).

Mrs. Venable was born in Scott County, VA on June 1, 1921, the daughter of the late James Hopkins Quillen and Emily Poston Quillen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Venable; an infant daughter, Carolyn Venable and daughter, Linda Venable Chase along with several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Venable was a homemaker and lived her entire life in Scott County.

Marie Venable is survived by her sons, Jerry Venable and his wife, Lana (Weber City, VA), Ronald Venable and his wife, Glenda (Kingsport, TN), Richard S. Alpha Blanche (Stallard) Vermillion

GATE CITY, Va. - Alpha Blanche Stallard Vermillion, 96, went to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at her residence.

She was a native of Scott County, Va., a former school teacher in the Scott County School System, and a former store owner.

She was a member of Midway Memorial United Methodist Church.

Alpha was a well-respected member of her community, who will be remembered for her quiet loving ways, and her never-ending ability to give of herself to whomever needed a helping hand or a listening ear.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie B. Vermillion; parents, Willard R. Stallard and Nancy E. Akers Stallard; sisters, Venus Nickels, Orpha Onks, Tenafair Haynes and Elva Alley; brothers, Malcolm Stallard, Woodrow Stallard and four infant brothers; son-in-law, John Fisher.

Surviving are her daughter, Rowena L. Gate City- Benny Richard Vermillion, Sr., 58, of East Carters Valley went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Sunday ( October 17, 2010 ) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County . Benny was a graduate of Gate City High School in 1972 where he was a proud member of the State Champion Football Team. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company with over 34 years of service. Mr. Vermillion was a born again Christian and was a member of Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church . He was an avid hunter & fisherman who more than anything loved to spend time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Lee Vermillion, Sr. & Amanda Gamble Vermillion; brother, Harry Lee Vermillion, Jr.; a sister, Gail Vermillion Howard.

Born June 19, 1971, he was a self-employed brickmason.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Vermillion; grandparents, S.V. Jack and Mallie Vermillion and Ed and Nannie Noles.

Charles Eugene (Gene) Vermillion, 84, died on Thursday, March 17, 2011 , at Holston Manor Nursing Home in Kingsport .

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WW II on the USS Mission Bay. He was retired from Mason and Dixon Lines, Inc., in the late 60's and was of the Baptist Faith.

Charles was preceded in death by Alma Francis (Ann) Vermillion, his wife of 30 years; his parents, Clarence and Irene Vermillion and three sisters, Bertha Johnson, Janie Davis and Ottry Smith.

Hilton, VA – Dennis Vermillion, age 45 of Hilton, VA passed away on Friday September 26, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.

Dennis was born in Kingsport, TN. He is preceded in death by his father, Samuel Edward Vermillion and a brother Bobby Vermillion.

He is survived by his mother Mary Ann Vermillion of the home; three nieces Kayla Vermillion, Ashley Vermillion and Jessica Vermillion; a nephew Alex Vermillion, also several aunts, uncles, cousins and several special friends.

Erma (Gray) Vermillion

HAVERTOWN, Pa. - Erma Gray Vermillion, 92, passed away Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at her home in Havertown, Pa., after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Born on July, 1909 in Dungannon, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Lawrence and Eliza Victoria Stallard Gray. She had lived in Pennsylvania most of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Vermillion; one son, Ross Vermillion; a brother, Harold B. Gray; half brother, Victor Gray; and one grandson.

Surviving are three daughters, Thelma Matucci and Linda Strickland, both of Pennsylvania, and Ruth Whaley, of Delaware; three sons, Jimmy, Jerry and Jeffrey Vermillion, all of Pennsylvania; one brother, Quinton S. Gray, Kingsport; one sister, Ercil Fraley, Weber City, Va.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be conducted Wednesday at the Stretch Funeral Home, Havertown, Pa.

EAST CARTERS VALLEY - Harry Lee Vermillion Jr., 62, E. Carters Valley Rd., went to be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness on Monday (Nov. 4, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center.

He was born in Sullivan County on April 14, 1940 to the late Harry Lee Vermillion Sr. and Amanda Jane Gamble Vermillion.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Vermillion Howard.

Mr. Vermillion was a master welder, taught welding at Scott County Vocational School and was a member of Virginia Education Association. He retired from the Scott County School Board system. He also served his country in the U.S. Army and was an avid hunter.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all. He was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.

Henry Thorton Vermillion, 62, of 1937 Ft. Robinson Drive, Kingsport, died approximately 4 a.m. Sunday at Holston Valley Community Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Born in Scott County, Va., he had been a resident of Kingsport most of his life and had attended Brookside Mission Church. He was a former employee of Kingsport Foundry as a machinist, having retired in March of 1980.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ward Vermillion, of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Ducie Vermillion and Mrs. Goldie Rogers, both of Kingsport.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Brookside Mission Church with the Rev. Jerry Scalf and the Rev. Bobby Vermillion officiating.

The body will remain at 1937 Ft. Robinson Dr., until services.

Burial will be in the Vermillion Family Cemetery, Maces Springs, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Livingston Compton and Martha Gillenwater.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Delaney Vermillion; a sister, Eula McDonald; brothers, C.E. Compton, H.B. Compton and W.R. Compton.

Ms. Vermillion was a lifetime member of the UM Women Organization and joined the church in 1921. She was the oldest member of Gate City United Methodist Church . She truly loved the Lord.

She was also a lifelong Republican, having voted for the first time for Pres. Hurbert Hoover. She was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1970 by then Gov. Lonie B. Nunn.

Family always came first in her life. She was truly a remarkable lady and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was an avid gardener, enjoying her flowers, sharing them with friends and her church. She also enjoyed doing needlework.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Watson, Kingsport; grandchildren, Delaney and wife, Elaine Watson, Greeneville, and Charles Watson, Ft. Wright, Ky.; great-granddaughter, Cassandre Watson; and special caregiver, Faye Fansler, Yuma, Va.

The body will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gate City United Methodist Church and also will receive friends at other times at her residence.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. John Duvall and Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.

Music will be provided by Jim Belt Baker.

A private graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery .

Wayne Hammonds, Harry Penley, Henry "Bucky" Clabaugh and Roger Peters will serve as pallbearers.

Hiltons, VA - Levi Jacob Vermillion, 28, went to be with the Lord Sunday,August 11,2013. He was born January 20,1985 in Kingsport, TN. He was a wonderful husband and father to his family whom he loved dearly. Levi was a church member at Victory Baptist Church where he was saved and baptized.

Levi was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Carl Lane, and uncle Harold Lane, paternal great-grandparents Helen and John Baker.

Born in Scott County, Va., she had been a resident of Kingsport most of her life. Mrs. Vermillion was of the Baptist faith.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1911 in Scott County, Va. She attended Orebank Central Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, who was first in her life, and her family dearly.

She was a homemaker and loved and enjoyed quiltmaking, crocheting, gardening, canning and working in her flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Florence Gillenwater Fraysier; husband, Errett Vermillion; four sisters, Mary Fraysier, Bess Elliott, Georgia Benton and Lina Hargis; five brothers, Brian, Oral, Rex, Roe and Fletcher Fraysier.

HILTONS, Va. - Mallie Lou Hurt Vermillion, 94, of Route 1, went to be with Jesus at 12:35 p.m. Monday (Sept. 1, 2003) at her home.

She was born in Washington County, Va., on Sept. 5, 1908, the daughter of the late William Bill and Hattie Smith Hurt. She retired as a nurses aide from Hicks Nursing Home.

Mrs. Vermillion was a dedicated Christian lady and attended several different churches in the community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, S.V. "Jack" Vermillion, who was a longtime preacher in the community; son, Samuel Edward Vermillion; twin granddaughters, Sharon and Karen Vermillion; grandson, Ivan Vermillion; stepgrandson, Shannon Carter; brothers, Earl, Curtis and Kenneth Hurt.

WEBER CITY -- Herman E. Vest Jr., 40, of Weber City, died at his residence at 9 p.m. Tuesday [June 27, 1978] following a brief illness.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, he was a member of the Holiness Church.  His mother, Mrs. Vesta Templeton Vest, died March 29, 1978.

Survivors include several aunts, uncles and cousins.

HILTONS, Va. - Anna Flo (Fraley) Vicars , 70, died Thursday (May 27, 1999) in Wellmont Hospice in Bristol.

Born Feb. 17, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Otis Fraley and Ercil Fraley of Weber City, Va. She operated the concession for 25 years at the Carter Fold.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Vicars ; one sister, Virginia Kilgore; and one brother, Bill Fraley.

Born in Scott County (Blackwater), Va., she moved to this area at an early age. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church (Blackwater).

Born August 4, 1965 to Lowell and Rosemary Vicars, she had been a resident most of her life. Jen was a 1983 graduate of Sullivan North High School and a former jewelry designer.

Jen was a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, godmother, daughter, aunt and sister.

JOHNSON CITY — John Fred Vicars, 79, of Gray, passed away Monday, (Feb. 11, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born April 8, 1928 in Kingsport, the son of the late Anthony and Viva Taylor Vicars. He had lived in this area most of his life. Mr. Vicars was retired from Eastman and had attended Christian Fellowship Church.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Scott Vicars; and a sister, Jewel Bledsoe.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mayme Jean Vicars; three children, Jane Vicars Portwood and husband, David of Chattanooga, Ruth Vicars Davenport and husband, Jack of Harrison, Tenn. and John E. Vicars of Gray; two grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah Portwood, both of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Lowell Vicars, 72, Kingsport, passed away while surrounded by his family Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Fort Blackmore, VA, he had resided in Kingsport most of his life. Lowell was a 1958 graduate of Lynn View High School and had attended East Tennessee State University. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2002 following 45 years of service.

Lowell was a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the North Kingsport Volunteer Fire Department and various other community organizations. Lowell will be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, dad, papaw, brother, uncle, friend and mentor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Vicars; daughter, Jennifer Vicars; granddaughter, Taylor Hodges; parents, Kyle and Edna Vicars; brother, Howard Vicars, and brother-in-law, Cleve Alvis.

Mary Ellen Vicars , 75, Kingsport and Nickelsville, Va., died Sunday (March 8, 1998) at the residence of a daughter, Margaret Zaragoza, Telford, Tenn.

A native of Scott County, Va., she was a 1940 graduate of Midway High School and was a retired L.P.N. from Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, George C. Moore; two sons, Buford and Paul Moore; and his parents, James B. and Ella Kendrick Benton.

Surviving are her husband, J.W. (Willard) Vicars , Nickelsville, Va.; a daughter, Margaret Zaragoza, Telford, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Kay Vicars , Blacksburg, Va.; two sons, Robert Joe Moore and James Colby Moore, both of Kingsport; a stepson, Larry Vicars , Nickelsville, Va.; nine grandchildren; a step-grandchild; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Nyla Grey Sullivan, Fayetteville, Tenn.; and a brother, Leland Benton, Mansfield, Ohio.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and anytime at the residence of Larry and Joy Vicars , Rt. 1, Nickelsville, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wrightly Salling and the Rev. Joe Hill officiating. Music will be provided by Don and J.W. Depew. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Kingsport. Pallbearers will be Lincoln Breeding, William C. Moore, Edward Roller Jr., Jason Moore, Michael Moore, and Jason Vicars . Friends will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday to proceed to the cemetery.

ABINGDON, Va. - Mauriece Quillen Vicars, 89, entered into rest at Abingdon Manor on March 22, 2007. She had been a resident of Abingdon Manor for a number of years following a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1917 in Gate City, Va. to the late Maunie Compton Quillen and Frank Ewing Quillen. She was a graduate of Shoemaker High School and was a Christian since childhood.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Vicars in 1967; and her son, John William Vicars, in April 2003. Her paternal grandparents were John B. and Adelade Quillen and her maternal grandparents were William Albert and Eliza Compton. Her sister, Leora Hilton and brother, Ferris Quillen, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Judith Vicars, of Gate City, Va.; and her grandchildren, Rebecca Lawson, of Ft. Blackmore, Va., Gayle Ervin, of Weber City and John Daniel Vicars, of Gate City, Va. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eva Quillen of Kingsport; and several nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at Nickelsville Cemetery, Nickelsville, Va., with Dr. Rob Jones officiating.

The family will meet at 3:15 p.m. at the cemetery for graveside services.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Minnie Pearl Vicars, 93, passed away peacefully early Friday morning (Oct. 6, 2006) while at the Brian Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City, Va.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, Va., she was born April 3, 1913 and was a daughter of the late Jasper Marian and Mary Elizabeth Kennedy Compton. She was graduated from the Nickelsville High School, Class of 1932.

She was a charter member and the oldest surviving member of the Meade's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elmer Vicars; one sister, Jennie Odle; one grandson, Rusty Vicars; and one nephew, Jeff Wood.

She is survived by her son, Larry Vicars and wife Ann of Gate City, Va.; one grandchild, Wendy Gaines and husband Lathrop of Warrenton, Va.; one great-grandchild, Ashley Gaines; special niece, Mary Lou Wood and husband Don, of Nickelsville, Va. who were also her caregivers; niece, Mildred Quillen of Weber City, Va.; nephew, Pete Odle and wife, Nancy of Nickelsville, Va.; one great-niece, Jane Quillen and husband, Jackie of Kingsport; one great-nephew, Scott Odle and wife, Tonya of Gate City, Va.; one special friend, Ed Murray of Kingsport.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Scott County Funeral Home with services to follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel. Rev. Wayne Meade and Rev. Paul Blessing will officiate.

Music will be provided by the Meade's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church choir.

Burial will be Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Grassy Creek Church Cemetery, Nickelsville, Va. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m. for the graveside services.

Pallbearers will be Pete Odle, Tim Vicars, Scott Odle, Bob Moore, Greg Castle, Terry Vicars, Todd Criswell and Darrell Meade.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carlyle Byington, Arles Pease, Don Wood, Joe Meade, Gary Addington, Jackie Quillen, Harold Frazier and Leon Marshall.

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Olin K. Vicars, 68, of Greencastle, passed away Friday morning.

Born May 7, 1939 in Lee County, Va., he was the son of Theodore R. and Callie Lou (Robinette) Vicars. He recently celebrated 49 years of marriage to Bonnie Marie (Egan) Vicars, whom he married on Aug. 11, 1958 and she survives.

Mr. Vicars was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was a truck driver for National By-Products in Indianapolis for 23 years, retiring in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy Allen Vicars; a grandson, Joshua Matthew Vicars; sister, Bertie Mae Keeling; and his father-in-law, Kinley H. Egan.

Survivors other than his wife are a son, Kenneth Wayne Vicars and wife, Tina of Greenfield, Ind.; three brothers, Joel Lee Vicars and wife, Julia, J.R. Vicars and wife, Edna, and Oscar A. Vicars and wife, Carolyn, all of Kingsport.; three sisters, Hassie G. Morgan of Knoxville, Shelby Jean Thomas and husband, Larry, and Eula Onita Gray and husband, Jr., both of Kingsport; mother-in-law, Hattie Egan of Kingsport; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; seven step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greenscastle, Ind., with a Masonic Lodge service to be held at 7 p.m.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Ron Mills officiating.

Interment with full military rites will be in the Little Walnut Cemetery in Greencastle, Ind.

Rosemary Vicars, 72, of Kingsport, passed away surrounded by her family Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Sullivan County, TN on April 27, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Sam Taylor and Lorene Elkins Taylor.

Rosemary was a homemaker and a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife, mom, “gana”, and friend who decorated cakes, arranged flowers, and a mother to anyone who would allow her to be.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Vicars; granddaughter, Taylor Hodges; brother, Benny Taylor and wife Charlotte; sisters, Patsy Chaffin and Phyllis Marshall and husband Roy.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lowell Vicars; children, Dawn Hodges and husband Tim of Kingsport, Chris Vicars and wife Brooke of Church Hill, and Darin Vicars and wife Tonya of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jamey Vicars, Kyle Mounger, Caleb Hodges, Mikayleigh Mounger, and Kinzee Mounger; an aunt, Edith Mae “Sis” Stewart of Clinchport, VA; a sister-in-law, Shelby Smith and husband Lee of Jonesborough; a brother-in-law, Lincoln Chaffin of Gray; several nieces and nephews; numerous other relatives and friends; and her dog “Ginger”.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church and at other times at the home of Chris and Brooke Vicars. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Ray Amos, Jr., Rev. Bill Porter, and Rev. Roy Fowler officiating. Music will be provided by Kim Amos, Dick Blaney, and Cynthia Berry.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Those attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m.

KINGSPORT — Sabrina Dawn Vicars, 36, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Monday (June 15, 2009) at her residence after an extended illness.

Sabrina was a lifelong resident of Kingsport, graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She was employed by City of Kingsport Department of Education. Sabrina was a member of Fort Robinson Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother and father, Karen Hartsock Vicars and Gary W. Vicars of Kingsport; one son, Brayden Andrew Buckles, of the home; father of her son, Eric Buckles; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Robinson Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Wallen and Rev. Frank Proffitt officiating.

Music will be provided by the church choir.

Charlie Vineyard, 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior (Sunday October 5th, 2014) where his faith became sight.

A native of Scott County, he lived in East TN most of his life. He graduated from Ketron High School in 1959; and in that same year he went to work for Eastman Chemical Company. He retired in 1995 after 36 years of service. He attended Salem United Methodist Church.

Charlie enjoyed the mountains and vacations to the beach. He loved camping in the great outdoors. However, the most important thing to him, everything he did, was for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vance and Edna Vineyard; sister, Phyllis Hammonds; twin sons, Jeffrey and Gregory and special brother in law, Perry McClain

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Shirley Vineyard; two daughters, Donna Robinson and husband Dennis and Earline Haga and husband Larry; son, Mark Vineyard and wife Nancy Lynn; grandchildren, Christy Tankersley, Cortney Vineyard, Kayla Haga and Cody Vineyard; two sisters, Nancy Hood and Barbara Hawkins and husband Edgar; two special brothers in law, Paul Baxter and wife Janice and Bobby Baxter and wife Margaret; sister in law, Virginia McClain; brother in law, Don Hammonds and several nieces and nephews

CHURCH HILL - Gracie Amos Vinson, 85, died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at Church Hill Life Care after a brief illness.

Ms. Vinson was born in Scott County, Va., and had been a member of the Christian Life Center for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Amos; a daughter, Nellie Ruth Roberts; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
