NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TEXAS
MELROSE UPPER CEMETERY (AFRICAN-AMERICAN CEMETERY)

The Melrose Upper Cemetery is located in Melrose north of TX 21. From Loop 224 travel 8.6 miles to Melrose. Turn north (left) onto CR 331 near the church sign and the on northwest corner outside fence of Melrose-Upper #1 (Melrose Methodist Church Cemetery); nearby was Melrose C.M.E. church and school for African-American children.

On Friday, 3 September 2004 a member of the Texas Historical Commission and Mr. Charles Brightwell located two marked graves with concrete markers sheathed in steel plate with the following inscriptions:

      Mother Mother

   Classie Horn Viney Chandler

   b. August 08, 1837 b. May 16, 1876

   d. July 25, 1926 d. April 02, 1926

There is also a ground depression with the stem portion of a metal funeral home marker with the placard head removed. This appears to be a burial site. There are sure to be multiple burials in this Northwest portion of the dedicated land, but outside the primary burial ground.
