Michael Andreas Barclay, born 1761, and descended from Peter,
the original immigrant, entered the Russian Army with his two
brothers. By 1806, Michael was in command of one of the Russian
divisions sent to support Prussia against the French. He gained
distinction at the battles of Wagram and Eylau. At the later, he
had his horse shot out from under him and was severely wounded.
He was made Minister of War in 1810 and two years later was
given command of the Russian Armies against Napoleon. He
invented the policy of 'scorched earth', retreating and
hiburning until starvation and cold forced Napoleon into the
terrible retreat from Moscow. In 1815, Michael was elevated by
the Czar to Field Marshal Prince Michael Barclay de Tolly and
was made a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. From England, George
III bestowed upon him a G.C.B. The Prince came to London to
receive this honor and met Colonel Sir Robert Barclay (Towie
XXV) to whom he declared himself to be 'perfectly acquainted
with his descent from the Barclays of Towie in Scotland'." from

In 1829 Daniel Loflin was indicted for murder -- arraigned and
plead not guilty.
Brief of Testimony
State's witness sworn -- Simon Fuller
Done at his sons house on the 7th May 1829 -- the prisoner and
Melton quarreled for a half an hour -- tried to make peace --
thought they now reconciled -- quit quarreling half an hour --
begin to quarrel again -- he was out of doors -- went toward
them and before he could say much Loflin raised his hand and Mr.
Melton caught him with left-hand. Loflin backed him in the
corner between the counter and the door -- while Melton had hold
of Loflin, Loflin backed and when at arms length he stabbed him,
Melton. did not strike him -- cut his gallous on the left side
about the short rib -- after Loflin was ordered to be taken he
said he would kill another before he would be taken, put the
knife in his pocket -- cut him into the hollow and his intralls
came out -- Melton laid down then died of the wound -- Melton
was middle sized man weak compared to Loflin. Loflin is a strong
man.
Cross-examined -- first passed in the house inside of the
counter -- he did not know which commenced first quarrel -- did
not see them gambling -- both mad and willing to fight -- I
thought they appeared friendly after the quarrel -- I left them
alone in the house -- first and second quarrel began about a
horse race. -- when I went to them, they were standing up
quarreling -- Loflin raised his left hand -- Melton caught him.
and Loflin pushed him into the corner standing on their feet
pushing each other -- Loflin stepped back in stabbed him. Melton
still held him. nobody saw them -- went to Weavers to get
assistance -- after I went off he might have departed before I
returned but did not -- before they quarrelled they had been
drinking -- Loflin there first when Melton come they were very
friendly -- both lived close by. -- they were up to that day
unusually friendly, no difficulty existing between them -- had
the knife in his right hand when he struck.
By court- in second quarrel did not hear Melton use any highly
provoking language.
By Shorter -- he was out of doors at the piazza did not hear a
word until he went around -- when they were back warmly
quarreling -- Loflin did not touch Melton until Milton caught
hold of him -- heard the--------- by both.
By Cooper -- as he started to his sons house, Loflin told him
not go that he had killed him. and was willing to die for it.
By Shorter -- said he does not know if Loflin did not say he
killed him, but did not go to do it.
Examination approved and ordered to be recorded -- Thomas W.
Cobb.
