Lodowick TANNER

1692 - 1773

ID Number: I64625

  • RESIDENCE: Henrico and 1735 Amelia Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 1692
  • DEATH: 1773
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2306] [S2449]
Father: Joseph TANNER II
Mother: Sarah HATCHER

Family 1 : Frances BRANCH
  1. +Sarah Frances TANNER
  2. +Elizabeth TANNER
Family 2 : Ann JOHNSON (WIDOW)

Notes

"Lodowick Tanner (1692 — 1773) spelled his name “Lodowick” yet we presume they pronounced as though it was “Ludwig.” By 1706 he was in the care of Alexander Marshall Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth (Worsham) Ligon, the widow of Thomas Ligon. We do not know why this was so. On 20 August 1706, Lodowick’s mother, by then Sarah Oulton did not appear in court to give a bond for “maintaining and educating her son Lodowick.” Perhaps she left Lodowick, who had lost his father at age seven, in the care of the Marshall’s. They evidently educated him because we know Lodowick later owned books. In 1713 Lodowick reached lawful age and petitioned the court for his part of his father’s estate. Col. Francis Epes, who held the remainder of the estate turned it over to Lodowick.
Before 1728, Lodowick married first Frances Branch. Lodowick and his bride lived in Henrico County until 1735 when they moved to the newly-formed Amelia County.
Henrico County taxed Lodowick on four levies and 125 acres in 1736. On 11 June 1736, Henry Anderson Jr. deeded Lodowick Tanner, of Henrico County, Virginia, 572 acres in Amelia County on the north side of Anderson’s Road. The price was £100. This was land Henry Anderson Sr. had devised to Henry Jr.’s brother Edward Anderson. In 1737 Lodowick owned four “Negro” slaves. Living with him also was John Kelly, who could have been an overseer. On 15 February 1739/40, Lodowick registered his livestock mark with the Amelia County clerk . His was “smooth crop right ear.” Livestock marks helped identify free-roaming cattle or hogs.
Lodowick Tanner was evidently a respected citizen of Amelia County. He appraised several estates in the county including the large ones of William Crawley and Henry Anderson. He also witnessed many deeds for his neighbors and served often on juries.
Lodowick Tanner later married Ann Johnson, a widow in Amelia County 4 May 1764 . He would have been seventy-two years of age then. Before marrying, Lodowick and Ann reached a primitive premarital agreement . It was the first, and one of the few, of its kind in the county. On 5 May 1764, Richard Hayes and Lodowick each entered into £2,000 bonds to the other. The following was recorded at Amelia County Court:"

"Amelia County Court
A marriage is intended to be solemnized between Lodowick Tanner and Ann Johnson.
Said Ann agrees that she shall not take any part of the estate of said Lodowick which she would be entitled, should she survive him.
Lodowick agrees that he will not take any part of the estate of Ann Johnson which he would be entitled to by said marriage. If said marriage takes place, Lodowick shall not claim any of the slaves, goods, chattels of said Ann, but the estate shall remain under the same management as heretofore and in the same condition as if he was not married to said Ann, & shall in no way intermeddle with affairs of her estate, and she shall dispose of her estate as she desires. A day after his marriage, Lodowick gave away fifteen slaves to his children and grandchildren . Lodowick named one son and two daughters in the will he wrote 10 August 1773."
