BiographyDaniel Bart Houghton: Aaron Haughton Sr. was born on April 23, 1812 in Cheshire, England. He was christened on October 1, 1812 in Gee Cross Church, Hyde, Cheshire, England. He Died on December 29, 1887 in Durand Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. He was buried on January 1, 1888 in Durand Township, Winnebago County, Illinois - Crane Cemetery. Aaron was a stone mason and worked with his father and brother to construct many of the early factories and railroad bridges in England. He with wife Harriett and four children sailed for New York from Liverpool on April 23, 1841. They first were in Rochester, New York where Aaron helped construct the aqueduct that carried the Erie Canal over the Genesee River. In 1842 they went by the Canal to Buffalo and then by the Great Lakes to Chicago. Then by wagon to Winnebago County, Illinois.

In Illinois, Aaron built the first stone house in Winnebago County. He erected many other stone houses and barns and a school in Rockford. Aaron was often called on to make window arches for many buildings. When the dome of the new county collapsed in 1877, killing nine, Aaron was called upon to rebuild it. He did and outstanding job because hundreds of pounds of dynamite were required to bring it down when the old courthouse was replaced in 1967. He also was involved in the construction of the dam across the Rock River in Rockford, Illinois, In 1880 he completed the rural stone Elton School with the help of William Hobson.

Aaron was also a farmer, In September 1842 he bought 40 acres from the government for $50. He then bought 120 acres from his father-in-law and later added more acreage. According to the History of Winnebago County (1877) he owned 190 acres, had been "Post Master, Path Master, and School Director". In 1880 he was a "retired farmer" in Durand Township.

When he first came to Winnebago County, marketing had to be done in Chicago or Milwaukee, 100 miles away. The trip would take six to nine days. Aaron was said to have taken 37 bushels of wheat to Chicago for which he received 50 cents a bushel. He used the money for groceries and provisions which he brought home in a "two bushel sack". Things changed when the railroads reached Rockford in 1853 and Durand in 1857.

He was married to Harriet Derwent (daughter of Thomas Derwent and Hannah Bradwall) before 1832 in Stockport, Cheshire, England. Harriett Derwent was born on September 15, 1811 in Hope, Derbyshire, England. She died on February 12, 1844 in Durand Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. Harriett died giving birth to a daughter who died the same day. Harriett's grave was the first in Crane Cemetery. Aaron Haughton Sr. and Harriett Derwent had the following children:

Thomas Derwent Haughton (born on December 6, 1832)
Aaron Haughton Jr. (born on September 8, 1834)
Mary Harriett Haughton (born on May 12, 1836)
Nye Haughton (born on July 2, 1838)
     Eunice Haughton (born about 1842)
Samuel Haughton (born on February 12, 1844)

He was married to Mary Ann Barningham (daughter of Job Barningham and Elizabeth Flint) on June 11, 1844 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Mary Ann Barningham was born on November 20, 1822 in England. Supposedly Mary and Aaron had seven children. She died on February 20, 1858 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Mary Ann was buried in Crane Cemetery with Aaron and Harriet. Aaron Haughton Sr. and Mary Ann Barningham had the following children:

Moses Haughton was born on August 9, 1845 in Winnebago County, Illinois, He died on August 27, 1845 in Winnebago County,      Illinois.
     Sarah C. Haughton (born April 27, 1848)
Joseph V. Haughton was born on April 16, 1850 in Winnebago County, Illinois. He died on October 14, 1851 in Winnebago      County, Illinois.
Clara Maria Haughton (born October 28, 1852)
Henry J. Haughton was born on March 22, 1856 in Pecatonica Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. In 1990, Henry was living      with his sister Clara and her family. In 1910, Henry was living with his sister Clara and her husband on their farm in Winnebago      Township. When they retired, Henry continued to live on the farm with the new owner, his nephew Lester Houghton. In 1920,      Henry was living alone on a farm in Pecatonica Township, Winnebago County, Illinois, Henry passed away at the home of his      nephew, Lester Houghton, He was buried in Pecatonica Cemetery, Winnebago County, Illinois.

He was married to Martha Whitman on June 27, 1859 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Martha Whitman was born about 1807 in England. Martha was the widow of Thomas Derwent Jr. who she married in England. In 1850 the widowed Martha and son Thomas III were living in Howard (Durand) Township on real estate valued at $1,000. In 1860 she was again with her son. Whether her marriage to Aaron ended in divorce or annulment is not known. She died in 1881 in Winnebago County, Illinois. She was buried in Durand Township, Winnebago County, Illinois - Crane Cemetery.

He was married to Ruth Bradley (daughter of M. Bradley) on July 2, 1866 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Ruth Bradley was born on November 28, 1822 in Vermont (?). Ruth's first husband was Milo Hall. She died on February 18, 1883 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Ruth is buried in Crane Cemetery with Aaron, Harriet and Mary.5

NoteA family of Houghtons from Hopewell, NJ moved there @ 1790-1810. My 3 x great grandmother is a Houghton who married John Hogshead (Hogsed) in Mason county, Kentucky in 1815. As for James D Hogshead and Catherine Houghton Hogshead, they left Maysville by crossing the river to Ripley Ohio and purchased land on the hill just east of John Rankin’s hill by 1833 just as the Underground Railroad became very busy through the town. By 1840 they are in Indiana
