BiographySurname change: Sampson appears with surname of Haughton in almost all sources. Changed his surname spelling from Houghton to Haughton.
Sampson and Mary were members of the Particular Baptist Church of Schodock, Rensselaer County, New York. Church has dates for Sampson (1770-1845) and Mary (1783-1823)
The Haughton Cemetery was started as a private burial ground by the Haughton family of five brothers--Lyman, Stephen, Cyrus, Marvin, and John. They came from Monroe County, New York in 1833-34 taking up a tract of government land in the present Central Avenue area. In those days, the cemetery faced a dirt road, in an area having only a few farm houses. (Balde Sunday Magazine, January 3, 1965)

The area where some Haughtons took up residence was the township of Sand Lake. The Haughton farms were not a great distance from the capital city of Albany nor the smaller town of Troy, New York.

The Holcomb Cemetery was established by the Holcomb family for their burials as well as for other neighboring families. It is located on the corner of First Dyke Road and Holcomb Road atop a small knoll surrounded by trees. Sampson and Mary's headstones

The HAUGHTON family originally lived in Rensselaer County, New York. Reportably, they moved to Romeo, Michigan where their McGregor relatives had settled. The daughters of Sampson Haughton decided to continue living in New York state rather than move West. The sons then decided to head on to Toledo where Stephen and Lyman's wives had an uncle. Stephen's wife and Lyman's first wife were sisters, Mary Susan and Huldah SMITH. Sampson and Mary (McGREGOR) HAUGHTON both died in New York state in 1845 and 1825 respectively. Most of the sons settled in Washington Township, Lucas County, Ohio and farmed.6

Mil. Serv.1775JWH: "He was a soldier in Revolutionary War.";DAR I 421;
NEGHR: A fifer, of Putney VT, served for 14 days. In his pension application he claimed "to have served for one month in 1775 under Capt. Abijah Moore of Putney; to have served agoin in 1775 for two months as substitute for Moses Johnson in Capt. Pollard's company of artificers in Col. Whitcomb's regiment at Cambridge; to have served for six weeks in 1776 in capt. Daniel Jewett's company of militia under Col. Ethan Allen; to have served for a fortnight at the time of the Royalton raid; and to have served for six months in 1777 in Capt. Spalding's company in Col. William Williams' regiment at the Battle of Bennington. There were no depositions by surviving veterans to support his statements and aside from the fourteen days under Cpt. Moore there is nothing in the availbale records to validate any of these claims. Not surprisingly his pension application was rejected."3,5,9,10
