"It would seem that the name Houghton originated in Lancashire, though some writers on the subject say that the original of the name came to England "with William the Conqueror." The latter is a "stock" phrase used by many who are really not entitled to use it, and much to the detriment of the few who prove themselves worthy, in a genealogical way, of the honor by the actual achievements of their illustrious ancestors.
Houghton seems of Anglo-Saxon origin, and composed of two words, signifying "high town," some writers say. In the German language "high" is written "hoch," and pronounced "hok"; in the present English word we find "hough" pronounced "hok," meaning the lower part of the thigh; in the present English surname "hough" is pronounced "huff." A century after the Norman conquest we find the name written Hocton, and later Hoton, Hooton, Haughton, and Hoghton. In the Anglo-Saxon we find the word "hough" pronounced "hok" and "ho," meaning the heel or the hough. In the present ancient and noble house of Houghton, of lancashire, the name is pronounced "Hoton;" "ton," on Anglo-Saxon has various meanings; in French meaning fashion. Town, in A.-S., is pronounced "tun," meaning inclosure, garden house, village, town; in Icelandic "tun," in German "zun," etc. We also find the name written Howton, pronounced "Hawton," and also spelt in the latter way. In a nutshell: Most of the original surnames were written with "De", this being placed after the Christian names & followed bythe name of the place from which the bearer had come. Thus th name Houghton, originally DeHocton, signifying "Hightown" or "High Place" and was taken from one of the manors of the family in Lancashire, Eng, remarkable for it lofty situation. The possessor of this estate, Willius DeHocton, or sometimes written, Willus Dominus DeHocton, assumed the name of this manor about the year 1140. He was the first to bear it and probably rorm him have descended the Houghtons of today. He married the widow of Geoffry de Favarre and the fusion of these two families brought about the"Houghton" line which began as "DeHocton". The "De" was omitted about the year 1458 by Sir Henry or, by his son Sir William Hoghton about the year 1483. The name came down without further change until about the middle oof the seventeenth century and it is claimed by some that Ralph Houghton introduced the "u" into his name upon his settlement in America. Contrary to all of this, I have a record of a Thomas Houghton, born about 1433 and all of his descendents were also Houghton, so when actually did the name of "Houghton" come into being? Early examples of recordings include Desmond Haughton, who was ghranted sixteen hundred acres in South Wexford in the year 1600, Richard Haughhan was christened at St. Giles Cripplegate, city of London, on November 23rd 1629, whilst Mary Haughin or Haughlin aged 15, given as being a spinster, was a passenger on the ship Reliance of Liverpool. This ship left Liverpool bound for New York on May 6th 1846, and may have picked her up in Ireland. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Edward Haughhan who married Elizabeth Anthony, at St. Dunstan's Stepney, on November 7th 1574. This was during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st , known as 'Good Queen Bess', 1558-1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. Origins of the Haughton Name

The Ancient Chronicles of England reveal the early records of the name Haughton as a Norman surname which ranks as one of the oldest. The history of the name is closely interwoven into the majestic tapestry which is an intrinsic part of the history of Britain. In-depth research by skilled analysts into ancient manuscripts such as the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086 by William the Conquerer), the Ragman Rolls, the Wace Poem, the Honour Roll of the Battel Abbey, the Curia Regis, Pipe Rolls, the Falaise Roll, Tax Records, baptismals, family genealogies, local parish and church records show the first record of the name Haughton was found in Cheshire where they were seated from very ancient times. They were granted the lands of Houghton in Cheshire by King William the Conqueror for their timely assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. Ivan was Baron of Kendall in Westmoreland and was said to be related to William the conqueror. Ivan died in 1114 A.D. The Houghtons were recorded as being seated at Haughton just outside Birkenhead in Cheshire from about the year 1130. The migration or banishment to the New World continued, some voluntarily from Ireland, but mostly directly from England or Scotland, their home territories. Some Clansand families even moved to the European continent. In North America, migrants which could be considered a kinsman of the family name Haughton, or variable spellings of that same family name included Gerard Haughton, settled in the Barbados in 1639, Thomas Haughton, settled in Virginia in 1635, and well as Robert Haughton in the same year. LetterApr 16, 2003Dave sent a document to CJV discussing the significant relationship between John Houghton of Lancaster MA and the Farrars of Lancaster MA, postulating a possible family relationship: John Houghton, in 1653, signed the Lancaster covenant with among others Jacob and John Farrar (whose mother was a Mary Haughton). John’s son Justice John Houghton married Mary Farrar, sister of these two brothers. All Farrars were born in Halifax, Yorkshire county, England. This raises the possibility that John Houghton of Lancaster MA was related to Mary Haughton of Halifax, Yorkshire England. Halifax is 37 miles from Preston, which is 26 miles from Lancaster. John Prescott, founder of Lancaster MA came from Lancashire county.

Houghton Association (1846-1868):
The original Houghton Association was created circa 1846 and lasted until 1855. It was then reorganized in 1868 and later dissolved circa 1870. The purpose of the association was to collect information relative to unclaimed Houghton property in England, reported to belong to the Houghton family in America. Clearly a get rich scheme. There were three meetings of the Houghton Association: one at Winchendon, MA, on Apr. 21, 1868, one at Groton, June 3, 1869 and at Milton, June 5, 1869. Columbus Smith spoke at two of them. About 220 Members paid $5 in 1868 to join the Houghton association hoping to receive $200 in any recovered property. Fisher Rice, agent of the Association, interviewed Judge Jacob Houghton, who refused to join, but gave him an introduction to Sir Henry Bold Hoghton Bt in England. While John Wesley Houghton mentions it's history in his genealogy, he had nothing to do with the Association.

David Anthony Keizer(1857-):

History and Genealogy of the Houghton Family, the descendants of Capt. Timothy Houghton who emigrated to Nova Scotia: 1896

John Wesley Houghton in his 1912 Houghton Genealogy, Almira White in her White Genealogy, as well as Marshall McClanahan in his 1957 Houghton genealogies, all used the data first compiled by David A. Keizer in his 1896 genealogy of the Canadian descendants of Capt. Timothy Houghton of Massachusetts. Keizer noted that he had read H. S. Nourse's Early Records of Lancaster, MA, as well as his Lancaster MA BMD Records, and his Military Annals of Lancaster MA. He also read J. Willard's Sketches of Lancaster MA of 1826. He erroneously believed John Houghton the Emigrant of Lancaster MA was the John, age 4/40 of the "Abigail".

The first major published Houghton genealogy. Very few place references; compiled from Houghtons sending him data; no citations. Many errors. But an outstanding job for a pre-computer age genealogist. While he reported the English Houghtons, he disavowed the "Ralph is Radcliffe of English De Hoghton ancestry theory". He was a Ralph Houghton descendant.

BiographyJudi Assony: "They spelled the name as Haughton in Adams Co., IN...I have 2 females, who were said to be sisters, they both married my gggrandfather George French in Madison Co. NY. I am assuming they were born in Madison Co. (formed from Chenago Co., in 1806), another possible is Chenago Co., as George's father first settled there in the town of Hmilton around 1798... Sarah & George moved to Adams Co. IN round 1838, and Sarah had her last child there in 1839, why it is said she died in NY is unknown, perhps she knew she was dying and wanted to be with her parents or in a civilized place. As soon as George married Eliza, he moved the family back ot Adams Co., IN. The Adams Co., IN history says that the Haughton family came to Adams Co., with the French family. There were only two I could find in Adams Co. Roswell Haughton b. 1810 Now he could possibly be a brother. Obediah Haughton (I have no dates on him)."

You may have heard of it, as the owner claims the spirit of Agusta, one of the Houghton daughter's died in the home as a child and now haunts the home. (When in fact Agusta, lived a long full life)
Kathryn Wickham: local urban legend states (as you may have heard) the Houghton's had a female child that died from poisoning at the hands of the house maid. I can see through census records and city directories that all of the female children survived to adulthood. Since the "Irene" we previously discussed on the 1910 census is likely Marjorie, I am hoping to prove that she lived to adulthood through a death or marriage record.
The current owner of their childhood home states some of the Houghton children had returned some years ago to what is now a bed and breakfast and informed her they had a sister that passed away from this poisoning. I am trying to figure out why they would have a story like that from the immediate family when all the records I have seen so far prove otherwise.6

BiographyJOHN A. HOUGHTON, who died at his comfortable and widely known homestead in Florence township on the 31st of January, 1904, had then passed fifty years of his useful life in that locality. Still a hale, intelligent and beloved old man, he was so suddenly cut off by apoplexy that his relatives and friends could scarcely realize that his cheerful, helpful and inspiring earthly presence had gone from them forever. Up to the
time of his death he was known as one of the four surviving charter members of the old Masonic lodge known as St. Clair No. 164, of Florence township, and, in the conduct of his daily life, was a credit to the highest standard of the order. While never a constant church attendant, he was liberal in his donations to local charities and offered the warm hand of friendship and timely assistance to those in trouble, without knowledge of their religious creed. He was also a liberal patron of magazines and newspapers, and widely read on social, political and religious topics. A stalwart Republican, he was simply a firm beliver(sic) in the principles of his party, never using it as a personal leverage. He
did employ it to advance the public interest of the township which he assisted in organizing, but during the half century of his residence therein neither sought nor held office. He was a remarkably intelligent man, an unusually disinterested citizen and a Christian in practice, if there ever was one in this world.
Mr. Houghton was born in Tioga county, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1832, and was a son of Frederick and Lois Ann (Hampton) Houghton. His father was of old Massachusetts stock-a shrewd, intelligent, popular Yankee-who long conducted a hotel near Buffalo, New York, before he came west to Benton county in 1865. By his first wife (nee Hampton) he had one son and three daughters, his second wife being Miss Mary Whittington. His brother settled in Michigan during the early days and was one of the pioneer traders in the present locality of Houghton. A good father and citizen, a Mason of high degree, and a man who inspired general respect, Frederick Houghton passed away in 1867, his second wife dying eleven years later.
The son, John A., migrated from Pennsylvania to Michigan when he was a very young man, his first employment in that state being to cut timber for the pioneer railway which was built through the southern peninsular to Chicago. When the line was pronounced in working order he boarded the first train for the Illinois town which pulled out of Detroit. It was a trip teeming with thrills and hardships, as the train ran off the
track half a dozen times and the brave adventurers were obliged to go without food for thirty-six hours. But the muddy city at the foot of the lake did not appeal to Mr. Houghton, and he went to work for a farmer in DeKalb county, Illinois, by the name of Ben Darnell. In 1854 his employer started with his family, household goods and cattle, for the wild prairies of Benton county, and his useful "farm hand" was one of the party. Mr. Houghton took up a quarter section himself and, after working for Mr. Darnell for some time, married Miss Mary Bower and set up his own household. This move in his life marked the commencement of his career of permanent prosperity and advancement. He afterward purchased forty acres more. His wife (the present widow) had been born in Yorkshire, daughter of John and Hannah Bower, also of that English county; had emigrated to Canada in her girlhood and to Benton county in the fall of 1854. As her father was a highly educated man and considerate as well, the daughter received a good education, and Mrs. Houghton is considered a remarkably intelligent lady, both highly respected and beloved. She is the mother of five children, of whom four survive as honored men and women. Hannah Lois, has been a teacher in the Benton county schools for several years; William Anthony, is now conducting the home farm for his mother and sister; John Frederick Houghton, the third born, is the only one of the children to leave Benton county, is now a merchant in the south; Martha Jane, the youngest, has been a teacher in the Benton county schools but is now looking after home duties.
