Matt Mallard - 07/26/04 My grandfather, John Charles Richardson died about 15 years ago and a story that has circulated around the family has now come to my attention. The story goes that my great grandfather allegedly shot and killed a man in a dispute over a horse. This was to have occurred sometime in the 1920s or possibly in the 1930s and was supposed to be near Summerville, GA. My great-grandfather was also supposed to have had a different name at the time and it was changed after the shooting. He was known to us as William Pinkston Richardson. The story is that my great-grandfather changed his and all of the childrens names and then fled to Knoxville. The original name may have been Ramsey and my grandfathers alleged original first name was Mimsy. My mother does remember going to Knoxville Tennessee and during her childhood to visit my grandfathers relatives, but also knows of an aunt living in Summerville with the maiden name Richardson. We have not been able to locate any of his relatives. We did find a delayed certificate of birth for my grandfather, that was not obtained until 1963 (He was born in 1905). It lists his birth place as Marshall Co., AL, which is near NW Georgia. On my mothers birth certificate, it list my grandfather as being born in Mongomery, AL, so it kind of does appear like he was making it up as he went. Have you heard any stories about rouge Ramseys like this? Or, have you heard of any murders over a horse around Chattooga County? Who knows, there were many in my mothers family that didnt care for my grandfather so the whole thing may be fiction.

His children were W.S., W.C., Ryal, Clara, L.M., Mary, V.C. all are buried at Pleasant Hope Cemetary, where most of my family is buried, with the exeption of W.C. Census records indicate his birthplace as GA, his father's birthplace as SC, and his mother's birthplace also as GA. William married Levina Moseley in Smith Co., TX on Aug. 16, 1860. She was also born in GA on April 4, 1843. Her parents were Miles Moseley and Nancy Camp from Henry Co., GA.William and Levina had the following children: William Washington Capps, Luvina C. Capps, John Capps, Sarah Elizabeth Capps Parnell, Nancy B. Capps Waits, Mollie Capps Glenn, Alma C. Lester, Cora Lee Capps Williamson, Nora Cozelle Capps, Lonnie Capps, Sterling Miles Capps. The only census record that comes anywhere close to the age and birthplace of William M. Capps as I know it is in the Floyd Co., GA. 1850 Census. A nine yr. old William M. Capps is living in the home of Mark and Mary Capps along with several other children. However, none of the birthplace information matches for the l ocation of his parents birth.William M. Capps was associated with the Allen, Moseley, Camp, and Sparkman families all of Carroll, Fayette, and Henry Cos., GA. These families all relocated to Texas from GA. They settled in the Garden Valley Community of Smith Co., TX. They all appear to be inter-related. Additional information on individuals includes obituary information and civil war information. According to the 1870 Texas Census for Smith County, E.S. and Julia Langford Allen's children were Alice - 10, Emma - 9, Thomas - 6, Bula - 3, and Josephine - 2. All were born after the family settled in the Garden Valley area upon their arrival in Texas from Georgia.Elijah Sherwood Allen served during the Civil War in Company C, 17th Texas Infantry. Tyler Daily Courier Times March 11, 1913, p. 7 This was the same company in which William M. Capps and William C. Allen both served. Elijah's obituary stated that he was the oldest of seven children. Information on William C. Allen (bro. to E.S. Allen) includes the following: Wife, Jane C. Devaughn and seven children whose names were Olivia, Thomas, Luther, Lucie, Cora, William, and Olon. The Tyler Daily Courier Times lists William C. Allen as having died on June 2, 1911. However, the pension application for Levina Moseley, widow of William M. Capps, required the signature of two witnesses who served with William during the Civil War. One of the witnesses was W. C. Allen who signed as a witness on September 20, 1915. Is this the same W.C. Allen? "Confederate Army Veteran - Co. C 17th Texas Calvary (the same Company in which William M. Capps was said to have served). He was taken prisoner at Arkansas Post and carried to Chicago. This was Col. Bryan Marsh's regiment. He is one of the last four survivors of original membership of the old Dover Baptist Church. Joined the Baptist Church in 1855." Tyler Daily Courier Times, June 15, 1911.
