Judy Thomason Harvey - 04/05/99 Kinnie Lamar Shaw b Aug 7, 1885 Alabama d Jan 20, 1987 m Della Beatrice Hanson b Nov 14, 1888 Floyd County, GA d. Jan 20, 1987 Married Dec 24, 1905 Children: Arthur Martin Shaw b Oct 9, 1906 m Odessa Francis b April 21, 1911 d Dec 6, 1998, Thomas Owen Shaw b. Jan 1, 1909 d. Jan 27, 1909, MaryLou b. Dec 26, 1914 married Alex Hopper, Harvey B. b.Apr 27, 1920 Married Mary James. I am the daughter of Arthur. My father is 93 years old still lives in a large house that he keeps up since my mothers death in December. Does all the yard work on almost an acre. Excellent health. I spent many, many summers with my grandparents in Georgia. Wonderful people, I have lots of pictures and stories. My great grandmother was great. (Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Wood. She spit tobacca and as a yound child that just was really great to me. She would sit in her rocking chair and do needle work and spit. Had the long dress and wore an apron with a pocket in it where she always kept her scissors and knife. She would sneek out to the fig tree in the back of the house. She loved figs and was not suppose to eat them. At the dinner table which was huge she would always eat the chicken wings. I could never figure out why they were not any good.....she always said that was the sweetest meat, now look , she was a woman ahead of her time, now every one likes chicken wings! My grandfather was a farmer (Kinnie) He got cancer of the tongue from holding a pipe and cigars in his mouth so much. When he got sick my dad (Arthur) suggested that since he could not farm because of his health why not open up a beer tavern on the property. They lived on the Georgia/Alabama line. Alabama was dry and since the farm was just over the line they became rich people. Money at the limit in many banks. They got kicked out of the church for selling beer. Later they gave so much money to the church they were welcomed back in. I also have lots of information on Henry Vince Shaw and Mary Matilda Wilson children and such.

She was born in the area in the late 1800s, had a sister named Alice, and they were both married, sequentially to a man named Alexander Duvall. Maude and Alexander moved first to Texas and then to New Orleans, were later themselves divorced. She died in New Orleans in the 40s or 50s, he died, in 1933 in Mississippi. Maude and Alexander were the parents of two boys, one of which Patrick Eugene Duvall (born Glenn Duvall) was my grandfather and born in Sherman, Texas. If this piques anyone's interest and you can help me, I will fill you in with more as I get it from my aunt.
Laura Brown - 05/24/99 Im currently researching the RICHEY/LINDSEY line. I have Simpson Archie RICHEY marries Mary Elizabeth LINDSEY (b. May 10, 1854, d. June 29, 1938) Elizabeth was born in Floyd county, GA. to Jeremiah (Jerry) LINDSEY (b. 1823 Spartanburg, SC.,d. 1858 Floyd Co. GA) and Jane WHITE (b. 1830 Spartanburg, SC,d. 1858 Floyd Co. GA) Both of Elizabeths parents died on the same day. Jeremiah fell from a 3-story mill he was building and died and Jane died during childbirth along with her newborn the same day(possibly from the shock of it all.) She was only 4 years old at there passing. From what I gather so far ELizabeth was taken in by a family to raise. And just recently discovered it may be a family by the name of ECHOLS. I would love to find out more about this family that took her in, more about the accident that took fathers life and any thing else that might be of interest. Elizabeth is buried in Florence, AL in the FLorence Cemetery. I have more info on her and some pictures too.
John A. Pringle - 05/30/99 I am searching for information on the Wilson family in Floyd County. Jesse (sometimes spelled Jessie) Marion Wilson was born 9 Sep 1900 In Rome. Father was Michael Gray Wilson, farmer, born in Rome approximately 1860. Mother was Georgia Ann Viola Leming Wilson, born in Rome approximately 1868. Jessie had five older brothers and sisters, including sister Minnie who later married a Mr. Mount and brother James P. Wilson. Jesse married Twila Rohrback and ended up in Anderson, Indiana after military service from 1920 through at least 1927. I have found three Wilsons - James, Jack and Samuel - from Floyd County who were in the Civil War. Any of those Wilsons would be about the right age to be Michael Gray Wilson's father, but I have nothing besides speculation to make that connection. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Gail Alexander - 06/07/99 I am looking for information on my grandfather's family. My grandfather was Ernest Clifford Johnson. His father was William D. Johnson, born Jan. l867. William died April 10, 1909, in Floyd County. He was married 28 Aug. 1890 to Laura A. Beard. She was born 24 June 1873 and died 15 April 1908 in Floyd Co. Her parents were John Beard, born circa 1844 and Nancy Matilda Trapp born circa 1842 and died 7 July 1911. My mother is Helen Lee Johnson Smith. She was born in Atlanta, Ga. Her father was Ernest Clifford Johnson and her mother was Gussie Lee Stovall. Ernest was born 15 October 1900 and he died 9 January 1930. My mother was 6 yrs old when he died and never knew any of his relatives. We have heard that there were ties to the Cherokees on the maternal side, maybe with the Beards or Trapps. We think that they all lived in the Floyd County/Rome area. Do you have any information?

The two families moved from Floyd Co. to Oklahoma abt. 1890. I'm mainly looking for the link between Larkin Samuel and Samuel. Larkins' father was Thomas Stapp (b. 1804 in SC, d. unknown). Any information about these folks would be greatly appreciated.
Wynell - 06/21/99 I am researching Johnson Hall who lived in Floyd Co., GA ca 1830 until 1872. I would love to hear from others working on this fine Hall family.
Lynn Clark - 06/21/99 A large chunk of my father's family came from the Floyd Co & Gordon Co. area. I am researching the Clark's, Stephen's, Graham's and Edwards' families (as well as the various cousins) that lived there from the mid-1800's on and some live there still. Could anyone possibly provide me with directions (and possibly some landmarks) to a cemetery that I've been told is called Antioch Cemetery, on or off of or near Dean Street in Rome? My great-grandparents are suppose to be buried there, but I could not find it when I was last up there. One of my cousins who was there many years ago said it was "all grown up then like a jungle". I've already visited Antioch on Big Texas Valley Road, and it's just too new. Besides my great grandparents were residing on Dean Street when they died. Their names were James B.Clark (1836-1912) and Charlotte Clark (1844-1912) and they lived in the Rome area since before the Civil War. He was a blacksmith before the war and some of his sons also later learned the trade. Any assistance in finding this cemetery would be greatly appreciated.

She came from Thomasville, Ga. to visit them. She was my great aunt and I am trying to find anyone who may have known her and could give me any information about her family.
Ray Harris - 06/28/99 James J. Holsonback (note, I have 22 different spellings for that surname so if it would sound close-it would be a possibility)(born abt 1810) listed on census of Floyd county-1840 as J. J. Holsonback (age 25-30). at that time had a wife (also age 25-30) and 1 daughter (under 5). Location of Birth of James is either Ga. or NC (depending on which records you read). After 1840 census of Floyd county, he next appears on the 1860 census of Dekalb county, Alabama with a wife named Minerva (born abt 1815-SC), daughter Frances (born 1845-Ga), son James Newton (born 1846-Ga), son William J. (born 1848-Ga), daughter Martha (born 1850-Ga), daughter Melvinia (born 1851-Ga) and daughter Delphia Elvira (my g-grandmother)( born 1854- Ga). Note that none of those children could be the daughter that he already had in 1840. There was one more child, Matthew (born 1860-Ala). According to the Bible of her daughter Mary Etta Harris, Delphia was named for her mother, Delphia Quinn. That would be logical only if Delphia Quinn is a second wife since Delphia Elvira was the fifth daughter of James (the one on 1840 census, Frances, Martha, Melvinia then Delphia). Often the first daughter will carry the mother's name, sometimes the second, not too often the third. This also puts Minerva as probably the third wife. Another unusual thing there in that Minerva was near James' age and a third wife is usually considerably younger. James also had one more wife named Nancy L.(on 1880 census- Ala) who was 37 years his junior (he was 69-she was 32).
Lynn Farrer - 06/28/99 My Gr-Gr-Aunt, Amanda MATHIS b. Oct 3, 1869. She married my Gr-Grandfather's twin brother Noah S. FARRER in Floyd County on 31 Jan 1881. Noah died 10-20 years after she did and is buried in Florida and she isn't. We are trying to find her. There is a headstone in the New Bethel Cemetery for an Amanda Mathis. It has a birth date about 10 years younger than hers, but no date of death. According to her son & daughters, she died in Atlanta. They were in nursing homes before they died and fold me she died on Mar 10. One said in the 1920's, one late 1920's and one guessed 1928. But they all thought she was buried in the Rome area. Is the New Bethel Cemetery still active? If so who is the contact person who might have the registry telling who was buried where and when? What was the name of the funeral home in town then? Are they still in business? If not, did someone buy them out?

Bena Taylor Kirkscey - 08/15/99 I would like to exchange/share information on the family of Thomas William DEUPREE who was born 15 September 1827 in Madison County, Georgia, married there on 16 May 1849 Amarantha Louisa WARE, moved to Athens, Henderson County, Texas, after the Civil War. Thomas William was the son of Joseph DEUPREE and Caroline SPRATLING. He died there 05 August 1883. His children were born in Floyd and Polk Counties, and the oldest daughter, Martha Caroline, married Calvin Lee MONTGOMERY and did an not make the move to Texas. Both are buried in Jackson County. I would very much like to make contact with their descendants. The rest of the children, with the exception of a son who died in infancy, made the move to Texas. I can give details on many of these children and their families.
Lynn Farrer - 08/15/99 I live in Florida and I am trying to research my ancestors that lived in Floyd County, Georgia. A very nice person did a random act of kindness earlier this summer and found the obituary on my GGGrandfather Richard Marion MATHIS in Floyd County, GA. I don't know the full name of the paper that published the obituary. I have a copy of part of the page. What I have is BUNE-HERALD, I assume this is TRIBUNE-HERALD. Is there a town name preceding TRIBUNE-HERALD? I am looking for an obituary for my GGGrandmother Frances Annie Elizabeth MATHIS. She died 1 Feb 1926 in North Rome, Floyd County, GA. In her civil war widows pension paperwork, C. L. Davis, Secretary and Treasurer for the Davis Furniture Company listed her date of death and filed for unpaid pension to pay for her funeral. She was using the name Annie E. MATHIS. The newspaper didn't have an obituary section back then. Marion's obituary was just a story in the regular newspaper. Could someone please find her obit? My aunt has funeral cards for family buried in Rome by Davis Funeral Home. Could this be the same company as the Davis Furniture Company that specialized in furniture and undertaking, and that buried Annie MATHIS? Sometimes funeral homes keep records on those they bury including all the information contained in the obit.

Family history has it that in late 1919 or early 1920, the sheriff came to arrest W. Sidney Farrer for making or selling moonshine. He asked to clean-up and change cloths first. Then proceeded to escape capture and then moved the family to Tennessee. Connie Farrer & children were at her father's, Johnson Milligan Adams home on Gass Ferry Road, in the 1920 census.I soundexed the Farrer's in Georgia for the 1910 and 1920 censuses but couldn't find the Wm. Does the sheriff department have old arrest warrant records?
Shirley Williams - 08/29/99 I have been trying to find the grave of my g g grandfather-Jabus(Jabez) Floyd. According to some of my information he died about 1860 and might have been buried in the above cemetery. His first wife was Nancy Douglas. His second wife was probably Lavania Carrington. Do you have a record of this cemetery? We have been searching for another cemetery that we believe is close to Rome. This may be close to a battle monument. We think John Henry Williams was buried there in Sept 1900 after being killed digging a water well.

And I'm in the process of sorting out by my own family, four brothers who came to the area beginning 1840, and oscillated between Coosa, Geogia and Cherokee County, Alabama. Sons of Aaron Hardin, Sr. of Anderson Co., SC, the brothers were: John b. 1806 SC; Aaron B., b. 1808 SC; Asa A., b. 1814 SC; and Avery A., b. 1818 SC.Segregating these two groups leaves lots more Hardins in Rome, both white and black. If you have done a genealogy on these other Hardins, or can connect even one generation with another, it would help in my effort. Please write me with your information. The Aaron Hardin, Sr. descendants also have lots of gaps.

Alfred Ellis - 10/04/99 I have just uncovered some important letters written by my g-greatgrandfather, Francis Marion Hardman, during the Civil War.
