Allan Rowe - 07/21/03 I am looking for any information on the following: John Phillips married a Ludie (maiden name unknown), his 2nd wife, about 1893 probably in Floyd Co. He was listed in the 1900 census ED # 132 sheet 8 with the following: John born Feb. 1858 Head 42 years old married 4 years Ludie born Mar. 1871 wife 29 " " Nettie born May 1889 daughter 11, Carl born June 1888 nephew 9 ( age should be 12 and she is a female...should be a niece), Eartie born Dec 1890 nephew 9 (another female and another niece), Georgia born Oct. 1892 niece 7. I am particularly interested in any information about: (1st) John Phillips: who was his first wife?; (2nd) what was Ludie's maiden name?; and (3rd) who were the parents of the three girls listed as his nephews/nieces? I have been told by a daughter of Carl Phillips (Morton) that John was Carl, Eartie, and Georgia's father and not their Uncle. But if that is so, why were they listed as nieces/nephews instead of his sons/daughters? If anyone can shed any light on this I would be most appreciative. Carl Phillips (Morton) was my wife's great grandmother.
Thor Egede-Nissen - 07/14/03 I'm trying to identify a Lou Hawkins, who married Thomas Philo Hawkins, born 15 May 1847 in Wilkes County, GA, the son of William Pope Muse and Mary A. (Elizabeth?) Williams, about 1867. Lou Hawkins, according to the 1870 and subsequent censuses, was Louisa N. Hawkins, except for 1920 census, when she was called Nancy L. Hawkins. I have a date of birth for her, although I can't find the source for it, of 17 Jul 1846. The censuses consistently say she was born in North Carolina. Living on an adjacent farm to the Muses in Carrol County, GA in the 1860 census was John T. Hawkins, 27 years old and his wife Sarah A., 23 years old, both born in North Carolina. As it turns out, this John Thomas Hawkins, married to Sarah A. West, was the son of Littleberry Hawkins, born in Buncombe County, North Carolina in 1805, who moved from North Carolina to Paulding County, GA, apparently between 1850 and 1860. Littleberry Hawkins was, in turn, the son of Benjamin Franklin Hawkins, born 1762/1772 in North Carolina. Depending on which internet site you prefer, he was either married once to Hannah Sarah Chambers, born 1769 in North Carolina, or married twice, first to [unknown] Hightower, and second to Hannah Sarah Chambers. Littleberry, who apparently went by the initials L.B., was th son of Hannah Sarah, in any event. Another son of Benjamin Franklin Hawkins was William A. Hawkins, the son of Hanna Sarah in the first descendancy chart, the son of [unknown] Hightower in the second. William A. Hawkins was born in Buncombe County, NC in 1794 and married Dorothy Jarrett, born in North Carolina in 1804. This couple also moved to Georgia, apparently between 1840 and 1850, because they appear in Cherokee County, GA on the 1850 census. They did not remain in Cherokee County, however, and moved to Floyd County by 1860. In their family is a child who is called, born in 1843, named Nancy in the 1850 census and named Louisa in the 1860 census. Louisa/Nancy would be the first cousin of the John Thomas Hawkins neighbor of Thomas Philo Muse. While the evidence, if you can call it evidence, is circumstantial, at best, it would appear that there is reason to believe that Thomas Philo Muse's wife is William A. Hawkins' daughter, other than for the three year discrepancy in the date of birth. I have hunted for and not found another Nancy or Louisa Hawkins child in either the 1850 or 1860 Georgia census. Of course, she could have arrived immediately after the Civil War, but that seems speculative. I would deeply appreciate all the help I can get with this puzzle.
