A celebration of life was held July 19 for Fred Cecil Hill Jr., 69, of Clovis, who died July 16 after a courageous battle against cancer, fought for almost 10 years.

Known to friends as Cecil, he was a pillar of the business community for decades in both Clovis and Fresno. As founder of Clovis Realty, currently in Old Town Clovis, he operated the company for more than 25 years and continued there along with his wife, Janet, after selling the highly successful business to Coldwell Banker in 2004. He continued to work diligently and effectively from his home until his last days.

Mr. Hill was honored publicly as "our friend" and remembered with a moment of silence by the Clovis City Council at City Hall July 17.

Mr. Hill was born July 6, 1937, to Fred and Pearl Hill in Carlsbad, NM. He graduated from Arizona State University, earned a master's degree from Pepperdine University and a doctorate in philosophy.

After selling furniture and owning a printing press, he became a high level executive for Howard Hughes at Hughes Aircraft and eventually General Motors in Los Angeles. Wanting a better life for his family, he relocated to Clovis in 1977.

As his family now reflects, Mr. Hill's life touched others in many different arenas. Above all else was his love for God. They said he lived by example as a servant in the church in various leadership roles for many years. He was a loyal supporter to the youth group of the Church of Christ.

He was devoted to his family, and he always reminded his children there was no business meeting too important to interrupt if they needed him.

His passion for imparting knowledge from his unique point of view was evidenced by the fact that he never passed up an opportunity to teach. He impacted the lives of students at all levels, from conversations at the local coffee shop to teaching Bible classes to giving sermons as well as occasional professorships at Pepperdine University.

Mr. Hill was instrumental in the development and shaping of downtown Clovis as it is today. His love for antiques and his business sense motivated him to form the coalition that has made Old Town a mecca for antique dealers and customers.

He supported both the local schools as well as the Clovis Rotary with his time, energy and financial contributions. Fresno Pacific University recently dedicated the new student union as Cecil and Janet Hill Student Center as a symbol of appreciation for Mr. Hill's contributions to higher education.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Inabelle.

He is survived by his wife Janet; his daughters, Brenda Ward, Valen Winders and her husband Tony, Marnie Chrisman and her husband Buck, and Beth Ballow; his sons, Quintin [H] Litten [b. 1964] and his wife Lisa [b. 1967], Jason Ballow, and Jonathan Ballow; 10 grandchildren, Brandon, Derrick, Kindy, Dallas, Kevin, Quinn, Buck Lee, Beckett, Ryan, and Delaney; sister-in-law, Judy Hill; nephews, Kenneth Hill and Steve Lampert.

Remembrances can be made to Nancy Hinds Hospice, 1616 W. Shaw Ave., C-1, Fresno 93711.

Clovis Independent, Clovis CA, Jul 21 2006 [Quintin Litten]

Russell Vance Litten, Sr. (68) with his wife and children by his side, passed away on (Monday, Sept. 4th, 2006) after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. With his earthly journey complete, he has gone to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying. Neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4)

What a comfort this is to all who loved Russ.

An Alamance County native, he was born on December 15th, 1937, the oldest of eleven children born to Fronnie Dixon Litten, who survives and the late Russell Francis Litten.

Russell loved working with his hands and he was a gifted and talented master carpenter. He learned much of his trade from working beside his father from the time he was a young boy and later passing this knowledge on to his brothers. He worked for many years as a construction superintendent, traveling with Daniel International, J.D. Skidmore in Greensboro, and Resolute Builders in Chapel Hill. It was with Resolute that he did some of his finest work, when he did the refurbishing of Old East, Old West Dormitories at UNC. Old East Cornerstone was laid on October 12th, 1793, making UNC the oldest public university in the United States. Russell was very proud of his work there. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving with the Atlantic Fleet.

He is survived by his wife Pat of the home and their combined children and spouses; Rusty and Julie Litten of Elon, Scott and Connie Litten of Snow Camp, Ashley Smith of Burlington, Lorin and Michael Gill of Charlotte, and Alex and Victoria Headen of Elon, and a foster daughter, Carol Fuqua of Burlington. Eight grandchildren; Logan Litten, Jessie Patterson, Lindsay and Courtney Smith, Jordan West, Alyssa Gill, Hannah and Sarah Headen, ALL who lovingly called him Paw-paw and another little bundle of joy to be born to Scott and Connie in October, and also three foster grandchildren. When the grandchildren were young, one of their favorite things to do was ride on Paw-paws back and to swing on the big tree swing that Russ put up for his and Pat’s children when they became a family in 1978.

After Russ retired and became ill, one of his favorite things to do was gather with his family and sing old songs from his childhood while Alex played guitar. He loved the old time gospel songs and one of his favorites was "On the Jericho Road". He also loved to sing along with his mother as his brother David would play the harmonica. Long into his illness, when memories were long forgotten; he still remembered the words to "You Are My Sunshine" and would sing it with Pat almost every day.

Along with Pat, their children and his mother, Russell is also survived by five brothers and five sisters, along with their spouses. Amy (Dan) Harman of Maryland, Pricilla (Charles) Pugh of Florida, Frances (Roman) Williams, Doris (Mark) of Graham, and Margaret (William) Atkins of Liberty, Fred (Kathy) Litten of Missouri, Andy (Beverly) Litten of Burlington, Michael (Dawn) Litten, Phillip and David Litten all of Charlotte. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his Aunt Clara and Uncle Shelton Coggins of Burlington, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Darlene and Charles Harrison of Lake Tillery, NC and DeAnna Upchurch of Florida.

A celebration and remembrance of Russell’s life will be remembered at 11:00 AM Thursday at a graveside service at Alamance Memorial Park with the Rev. John Shields of Peoples Memorial Christian Church officiating. Visitation will be held at Lowe’s Funeral Home and Crematory on September 6, 2006 from 6-8 PM. The family will be at Russell and Pat’s home at 1730 Stratford Road, Burlington until that time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance/Caswell, Alzheimer’s Research, or to the Friendship Adult Day Care Center. Pat and children wish to express sincere thanks and appreciation to Hospice and the Friendship Center for their love and care and support during Russell’s illness. A special Thank You to Carol Flinchum, Bonnie Richardson, Lorie Welch, Bonita Ruiz, JoAnn Cobb, Dixie Stafford, Lindy Halverson, and Bonnie Murrell.

There are Angels among us here on earth.

Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected].

DWI Charge Follows Teen Death

A 14-year-old struck and killed by a pickup Thursday enjoyed skateboarding so much his family plans to bury him with one, said his cousin Susan McLain.

Jonathan Tyler Litton of Hiddenite wanted to be a professional skateboarder. The teen, who went by Tyler, practiced skateboarding every day and built a small ramp by his home off King Sprinkle Road near the Alexander-Iredell county line.

Tyler and a friend had finished skateboarding about 7:20 p.m. Thursday and were returning home. Carrying their skateboards, the two were on Damascus Church Road, a two-lane road about a mile from Tyler's house, when he was struck. The other boy was not hit.

Rodney Wayne Tucker, 46, of Hiddenite was driving a Rid-A-Bug Exterminating company truck, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Tucker was arrested and charged Thursday with driving while impaired. He was released from the Iredell County Jail on $10,000 bond, said Trooper David Reid. Tucker is scheduled to appear in Iredell County court Oct. 25.

Reid said he plans to meet with the Iredell County district attorney to determine whether more charges will be filed.

The Observer could not reach Tucker by phone Friday evening for comment.

Tucker is employed at a Rid-A-Bug Exterminating in Hamptonville, confirmed a co-worker at the company Friday.

'A young life is snuffed out by a tragic accident,' McLain said. 'He was cheerful and very happy. He loved life and loved to make people happy.'

McLain said the family was preparing Tyler's funeral arrangements Friday afternoon. She said the family plans to lay a cross at the site where Tyler died.

The 5-foot-3 teenager with dark brown eyes and shoulder-length hair was a freshman at Alexander Central High School in Taylorsville.

His school held a moment of silence Friday morning, school officials said. Five grief counselors were on campus for students who made three banners and posters inscribed with messages for his parents.

Sprinkle said Tyler was excited about having his braces removed next month and had plans to take a driver's education course. He was also fixing up an older-model red Chevrolet Blazer his parents, Randy and Stephanie Stephens Sprinkle, had planned to give him.

Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home in Taylorsville. His funeral will take place at 3 p.m. Monday at Fairview Baptist Church in Hiddenite.

2nd Charge in Skateboarder Death

A Hiddenite man was back in jail Tuesday, now charged with felony death by motor vehicle in the case of a 14-year-old Iredell County skateboarder who was fatally struck last week.

Jonathan Tyler Litton, who had been heading home after a skateboarding session, was killed.

The N.C. Highway Patrol initially charged Tucker with driving while impaired. A trooper secured a warrant Tuesday charging him with felony death by motor vehicle. Tucker was being held Tuesday night in the Iredell jail on $150,000 bond.

The Dowager Countess of Lytton, charity activist, was born on December 13, 1915. She died on September 24, 2006, aged 90.

Clarissa, Dowager Countess of Lytton, was an energetic member of the charity Life, founded in the early 1970s to provide an alternative to abortion for young pregnant girls in difficulties. She helped to set up the Life House in Crawley, West Sussex, where she had moved with her husband, the fourth Earl of Lytton, in 1978.

Clarissa Mary Palmer was born near Lewes. Her father was an army officer, and she was brought up partly in Egypt, where he was posted during her adolescent years. She converted to Roman Catholicism (from Protestantism) in 1946 in order to marry Anthony Lytton-Milbanke, an army officer whom she had met while serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Vienna in 1944. Her husband succeeded to his title in 1951.

The couple lived for many years near Porlock, in Somerset, where they carved a successful farm out of the rugged Exmoor landscape and brought up five children. They then moved to a former keeper’s cottage on the estate of Lord Lytton’s mother near Crawley.

Kenny Fransen, lifetime resident of Spokane, WA, passed away on November 8, 2006, at Sacred Heart Hospital surrounded by his loving family including his wife of 30 years, Lea; son Tyler; daughter Jessica and husband Josh Hall, all of Spokane. He is also survived by his uncle Vernon Johnson (Thelma); cousins he considered as siblings: Debbie Snyder (Dan), Brent Johnson (Janice), and Brenda Bernard (Kelly), all of Kalispell, Montana. Additional survivors include many cousins from the Johnson side of the family. Although Kenny was an only child, his wife's family considered him one of their own, including Judy Coykendall, Honolulu, Hawaii; Vicki Kellogg (Norm), Long Beach, California; John Litten (Linda), Sitka, Alaska; and Jim Litten, New York City, NY, and many much-loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Thelma Fransen, parents-in-law, Leroy and Jewel Litten and best friends, Keith Olson, Bill George, and Rick Olsness. Kenny was born April 24, 1946, in Spokane. He attended Hutton Elementary and Lewis and Clark High School, graduating in 1964. In his years at Eastern Washington State College, he proudly played on the Savage/Eagle football team. He began his polo career with the Spokane Polo Club in 1966 and continued to play for 36 years on polo fields around the world, most of those years playing professionally. During this time, Kenny owned and operated 13 different restaurant establishments in the Spokane area, most notably Lincoln Heights Pizza Parlor. He married Lea Litten in 1976 at the home Kenny built for them in West Spokane, next to the Spokane Polo Club. Their first-born child was son Tyler, followed in 1979 by daughter Jessica. Kenny was active in soccer, tennis, and The Oldtimers' Hockey Association. Later in his life, he mastered the game of golf. Last summer he reached another goal and hit a hole in one. He was a true athlete! Ken exemplified a life that believed in generosity, loyalty, and perseverance. He was proud of all he learned from his Swedish immigrant father, especially his work ethic. Kenny was also a very kind and gentle man, a giver like his mother. He was a friend to all, touching the lives of people in all walks of his life. The family wishes to thank Nels Venerus and Gail Holden. They empowered the strength within him to fight through his treatments and were instrumental in bringing the community of Ken's friends together to show their love and support. For this we are grateful. Special thanks to Dr. John Floyd, Dr. Christopher Lee, and Dr. Bruce Cutter and the staff at both Sacred Heart and Cancer Care Northwest. Kenny's spirit will live on in his children he loved so much; his laughter, his love and his optimism will remain at the center of their lives. He will be missed, as he was the most loving father and friend one could know. As a family, we are thankful for the gift of this wonderful man; he has left a true legacy. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar. In lieu of flowers, Kenny requested that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, 1403 W. 3rd, Spokane, WA 99204.

Ruby Litton, age 71, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on Sunday, November 19, 2006. She is now gloriously happy in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ and reunited with family and friends that have gone on before her.

Ruby leaves behind a loving husband of 51 years, Walter, who faithfully exemplified the servitude of Christ in attending to Ruby's every need for the past several years during her extended illness. She is also survived by her son Michael and his wife Sandy and a granddaughter Tiffany.

Ruby loved the Lord and had an especial fondness for angels, whose figurines she collected for many years. No doubt she is already worshipping our Sovereign King alongside her angels.

Christian funeral services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. Internment to follow at Austin Memorial Park.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled, Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going". John 14:1-4

Carl S. Berggren died of a stroke Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, in Boise, Idaho. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

He was born Nov. 23, 1916, in a sod house in Chase County, Neb., to Walter and Nettie (Litton) Berggren.

He attended area schools — including a one-room country schoolhouse taught by his aunt Hettie Litton — and Imperial High School.

He participated in several local sports and began his lifelong hobby of communication by ham radio.

He married Alta Marie Thomas on Nov. 2, 1939. They were happily married for 63 years.

Carl was a highly decorated World War II veteran who had volunteered for military service.

He was an Army staff sergeant with the Fourth Signal Corps and served as a high speed radio operator. He was assigned to Navy invasion command ships, including the USS Estes, during most of his duty.

He saw action in Africa, the western Pacific, including Okinawa, the Philippines and Iwo Jima, and Europe, including Sicily and Salerno. He also was assigned to the Pentagon for part of the war.

After the war, he returned to farming in Chase County for two years. He then took a communications position in Denver with the Civil Aeronautics Administration (FAA). He also served in this capacity in Great Falls, Mont., and Albuquerque, N.M.

In 1959, he accepted a job at White Sands Missile Range and was proud to be a part of the space program, often being the voice of Range Control or heading the scheduling department.

In 1984, he retired and moved to Longmont, where he was active in the Good Sams RV Club, serving as president and wagon master. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports. He was an avid fan at Niwot High School athletic events, in which his granddaughters participated. He loved to go fishing and hunting with his son, grandsons and great-grandsons.

He was a friendly, outgoing person who loved being with other people. No one remained a stranger very long when Carl was around.

His family was very important to him, and he was quite proud of them all.

Mr. Berggren was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta; a son, Carl Thomas Berggren; a brother, Don Berggren (Donna); a sister, Wilda Berggren Hayes; and an infant sister, Ruth.

He is survived by a son, Leon Berggren and his wife Margaret of Sweet, Idaho; a daughter, Anita Little and her husband Jack of Denver; four grandchildren, Carl Scott Berggren and his wife Stacy of Price, Utah, Eric Berggren and his wife Ralynn of Eagle, Idaho, Arlene Over and her husband John of Aurora and Janice Gordon and her husband Michael of Englewood; and seven great-grandchildren, Carl Russell, Brian, Tiffanie, Cassie, Taylor, William, Jared and another due in December.

Other surviving relatives include two sisters-in-law, Marge Good and her husband Loren of Sterling and Agatha Brandt of Iowa Park, Texas.

Cremation has been held. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wauneta, Neb., with inurnment at Riverside Cemetery.

Alfred Burger, 90 [b. Aug 12 1916], a retired nuclear engineer who during World War II survived a harrowing oceanic voyage and two years in an internment camp in Australia, died of lung cancer Nov. 26 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.

In his professional life, Mr. Burger was a senior projects manager with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, specializing in nuclear reactor safeguards. He had worked there for 13 years until 1981; part of that time included supervision responsibilities of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.

Although his later years were marked with stability -- a good profession, family and friends -- his early life was filled with uncertainty and tumultuous events that left him wondering whether he would die young. Born in Vienna, Austria, Mr. Burger was a cadet officer in the Austrian army when Germany invaded his home country in 1938. He credited his military uniform for saving family members from an apparently imminent arrest by German authorities, his daughter Julie Litten said. Her father, in his Austrian army uniform, had scared away German soldiers who appeared at a relative's apartment, Litten said.

It was not long before he found himself summarily discharged from the military because of his Jewish heritage, he believed. With the rise of the Nazis, he fled Austria but only made it as far as Cologne, Germany, before he was captured by Gestapo agents. Released a short time later, he made his way to England, where his troubles compounded.

Caught up in a sweep of suspected Nazi spies in the early days of World War II, he was among more than 2,000 Jewish refugees placed aboard the ship Dunera, destined for an internment camp in the Australian outback. He survived the harsh conditions of the voyage and two years in the camp before authorities, realizing that they had made a mistake, released the prisoners. A movie, "The Dunera Boys," (1985) chronicled the plight of the refugees.

Mr. Burger returned to England, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He then immigrated to the United States in 1953 and settled soon after in the Washington area. He lived in Silver Spring for 40 years.

He was a member of Temple Emanuel in Kensington and what was then the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eva Burger of Silver Spring; two daughters, Julie Litten of Rockville and Lori Kitchelt of Olney; and four grandchildren.

James Glen Kern

Bedford -- Jim Kern passed away at home on Dec. 20, 2006. He was born on Jan. 31, 1928, in Fayetteville, to Roy and Bess (Myers) Kern. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ensign Luther C. "Dude" Kern and George William "Bill" Kern; a sister, Betty Helen Haley; and a son, Clay J. Kern.

Jim, or Jimbo as he was known to many in his younger days, grew up in Fayetteville. After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he returned to Lawrence County where he married Rosemary Lytton in August of 1947. He is survived by his beloved companion of 12 years, Darlene Steele McSoley; his son and wife, L.C. and Linda Kern (Seattle, Wa.), his daughter and husband, Kitty and Jay Waren (Georgetown, Texas); granddaughters, Kristen (Portland, Ore.), Megann (Seattle, Wa.), and Katie (Las Vegas, Nev.); grandsons, Alex (Seattle, Wa.); Clint and Spencer James (Las Vegas, Nev.); and great-granddaughter, Hailey Kathryn (Las Vegas, Nev.). And not to be missed, his very special friends, Jimmy and Crystal Baker. Jimmy assisted Jim through thick and thin for many years and that friendship was highly regarded by Jim. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Joe Butler of Paso Robles, Calif.

He retired as a teacher in the North Lawrence school system in 1989, after teaching math for many years at Bedford Middle School. Prior to this, he taught at Lincoln Elementary, after graduating from Indiana University with a B.S., M.S. and Ed.S. in education and was the principal at Fayetteville School from 1965-71. In his retirement years, he was always amazed and humbled by his former students letting him know that his strict discipline and teaching abilities had in some way positively impacted their adult lives years later.

He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826, Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. No. 14, and American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Sons of the American Revolution, lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa education honorary society and in early life, the Exchange Club. He also loved to play golf for many years.

Jim was a man of many talents. Fondly, his children remember him as a "mad scientist" inventor of sorts, always tinkering with some machine or tool to serve his purpose. And, all who knew him can also remember him for his kind disposition to those who needed a bit of help, his candy-making at the holidays and his generous spirit to those he met along the way. And, thanks to Darelene, he was introduced to the joys of family getaways to Las Vegas, meeting the whole family there at least twice each year for the past 12 years.

His passion in life was farming and working with the land and was heard many times explaining "you can tell a man by the fence row he keeps." He was truly a steward of the land and dearly loved gardening and caring for the small "farm" of his companion Darlene and her family.

The Kern family had owned a concessions business for over 65 years and Jim enjoyed working a few festivals and the Jackson County Fair each year so he could visit with old and new friends on a regular basis. While he has taught a few people the "secrets" of caramel corn and caramel candy making, none will ever be as good as his.

Jim loved a good life filled with hard work and dedication to the things he felt important, such as a good education for everyone, helping others when you are able, and especially, late in life, enjoying and loving his family. He will be missed by many.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military rites will be accorded at the grave by American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be at 7 p.m.
