Dorothy Litton Gable, curator, ex-official for CMA dies

By Holly Edwards
Staff Writer

Graveside services were held in Knoxville yesterday for Dorothy Litton Gable, a former vice president of the Country Music Association and former curator of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Mrs. Gable, 90, who died Oct. 3, was a longtime Nashville resident and lover of country music, said her sister-in-law, Kathryn Litton Crymes.

During her years at the hall of fame and museum, Mrs. Gable befriended many country stars, including Chet Atkins, Minnie Pearl and Grandpa Jones, Crymes said. Mrs. Gable also used her connections to procure numerous items now on display at the museum, she said.

"She worked very hard behind the scenes," Crymes said. "She loved country music and a lot of people loved her."

While Mrs. Gable was an avid songwriter, she never had a song recorded, Crymes said.

Mrs. Gable also wrote volumes of books about her father's family history and founded the Litton Historical Society in Oneida, Tenn., about 170 miles east of Nashville.

"The group meets every year, and Dorothy never missed a meeting," Crymes said. "She was a very sophisticated, likeable, charming lady."

Mrs. Gable was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Gable, and son, Richard Gable.
