Born in Newark, N.J., in 1915 [May 22] to Rose and Isaiah Litten, he moved with his parents to the Woodhaven neighborhood in Queens, N.Y. In 1928, the family moved to Rochester, N.Y., where he graduated from the University of Rochester in 1936 with a membership in the Phi Beta Kappa society and a degree in optical engineering. While still a student, Walter started writing for the Rochester newspapers and in 1936 he began work at Bausch and Lomb as a lens designer while remaining an active reporter, eventually for Time-Life. He began, in 1940, a long career working at Eastman Kodak, first in research and later writing corporate and scientific advertising. In 1941, he married Mascha Kronman. Together, they produced many newspaper and magazine stories; she doing the photography and he “slinging words.”

Walter taught mycology (study of mushrooms) at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor and served as a volunteer naturalist at Acadia National Park. He was also editor of McIlvania, journal of Mycological Society of America and a volunteer with the Poison Control Center identifying mushrooms brought to him by the State Police. His property in Maine included a blueberry farm and he had a long association with horticulture professor John Smagula at the University of Maine, turning research reports into articles suitable for scientific and grower audiences.

Mascha died in 2001 and Walter, increasingly disabled by old age, was no longer able to remain in his home.
